I thought the nature of the music in the book was unimportant - Its the
obsession with the music that makes it relevant to us listees. The
continual production of compilation tapes with stupid themes, the constant
noting of various lists of records(top 5 records I played on such and such
a night), the minute details of records, etc etc.
The book is primarily a love story - a broken down relationship has to be
repaired and our hero spends time re-examining his life and then repairing
his love life. He owns a second hand record shop as an aside but the
obsessive details of his record collecting mark his life out and allow him
(and the reader) to focus elsewhere. I think the message of the book
affirms the relationship between a man and his hobbies (his obsessions) and
the coupling of this with the traditional man-woman relationship.
In other words, its OK for me to have too many records because my
accumulation of records is a necessary and positive aside to my
relationship with my fiancee.

The Rascals - Peaceful World - (CBS?)
it's a double with Gaugin's Tahitan Landscape (?) on the cover
Has Alice Coltrane, Hubert Laws etc
'Visit to Mother Nature Land' is probably the best track.

I seem to have picked up a few compilations recently which I've only
properly listened to this weekend, so here goes:
Pulsar Music Ltd (Plastic) - Very Jazzy, library/soundtrack music with a
largely improvised feel, some standout moody/eerie moments but mostly
nothing special - nothing to dance to on this one.
Beyond the Valley of the Ultrabeats 1 and 2 - Good obscurities from some
record collectors' pile. The compiler has made sure that he hasn't
duplicated other compilations' selections - Good breaks and some unusual
tracks but both LPs lack gems. (Is this something to do with you, El
Maestro con Queso?)
And today, I've been listening to The Duke of Burlington's two LPs A
Revolution in Sound and Pressed Piano - both are superb, with that hard
piano sound, flutes, breaks, instrumental/rocking/pop music - very Italian.
Personally prefer Pressed Piano - its less psychedelic and more groovy.
And finally, does anybody have Instant Insanity Drugs and LSD - Battle for
the Mind on CD that they could copy onto MD or CDR and trade for something
they've always wanted (or a mix).
Thanks all,
Charlie

Subject: (exotica) velvet dreams
Saw a documentary on Bravo last night that I thought some people here would
love.
It was from New Zealand and called "Velvet Dreams". It followed a search
for the origin of a particular velvet painting portraying a naked
Polynesian woman.
The documentary is narrated "hardboiled style" as the narrator tries to
find out anything he can about the "velvet lady" that has become an
obsession for him. He travels to Seattle to meet velvet painting
collectors; one of the "experts" hangs out in a place called "the Tiki
Lounge". From there he goes to Tahiti in order to find out if his velvet
lady was painted by Leeteg, the most famous of the velvet painters. It isn't.
He finds the painter - Charles McPhee - back in New Zealand.
Anyway, it's filled with tikis and exotica and Hawaiian music. Check it
out if you get a chance.

Subject: (exotica) The Sound of Sight
Not sure I ever heard this record referred to here.
It's by the sometimes great Ray Martin.
On Phase Four (rather than Stereo Action for instance.)
Called "The Sound of Sight"
subtitled "Music for an experiment in imagination"
It's a two sided musical collage, full of different moods, genres and sound
effects.
The only complaint I would have is that the cuts flow into each other and
make it virtually impossible to put individual cuts on a compilation tape.
Among the pieces of particular interest to someone here are "Destination
Space", complete with countdown and other various spacey chatter.
Then there's "Hoodunit" which is crime-jazz filled with nightclub sounds,
creaking floors etc.
The record is described in great detail in the liner notes. It's hard to
sum it up here.
I'm not surprised a record like this exists but I was still surprised when
I found it.
The cover art, by the way, is also very familiar and appropriate. A riot
of cartoonish characters reflecting the themes on the record.
By Jack Davis. The name isn't familiar but the style is. Sort of Mad
Magazine looking.

I blame it on Free Design and biker soundtracks.
My new appetite for any LP I'm not familiar with, which has that soft-pop
fake hippy look.
In that regard I bought two LP's last week.
"The Love Generation" featuring their supposed hit "Groovy Summertime".
It's on Imperial/Liberty. Can't discern an exact date. I'd guess late
sixties.
It's pretty good, more Fifth Dimension than Free Design. And the
instrumental arrangements are a cut above average, including the subtle use
of sitar-like sounds.
The second LP is by the Sunshine Company and is called "Sunshine and
Shadow". Also on Imperial/Liberty.
(Did I read about them on the list here?)
I can't decide what I think about this but there's less harmony than The
Love Generation.
So, are there any compilations of this kind of Orpheus/ Association hippy
harmony stuff out there?
Sounds like a job for someone on this list. Anyone about to burn a CD of
this kind of stuff? Make sure you include "Not be found" by the Love
Generation.

Hi, Nat! Again, I'll turn this over to AstroSlut's Mr. Keyboards, Quinn
Martian, who has this to say:
"One of my fave liner note quotes of all time is from the Love
Generation's first Imperial LP. It says how during the recording of one of
the
songs,
"...an impromptu party broke out, with 7-Up, pressed ham sandwiches,
and
flowers flowing freely."
These guys made at least 3 albums for Imperial, and the cover art for
the 3I've seen use pictures from the same photo shoot. They're a very
sanitized Sears Roebuck version of '60's counterculture."

My opinion on the ebay debate?
Anyone else can do what they want, but personally, I see the list as a

I think it would be much more in keeping with that notion if people
just sold the stuff they didn't end up liking at a minimum profit.
This might pay back list members for all their good recommendations

That is true, but I think in order to enjoy this music you have to almost
learn about it as a reaction to "popular" music, rock, etc. I often wonder if
I would be into this stuff if I hadn't gotten totally sick of rock and roll
and exhausted the soul supply out there. It rebels against rock dominance in
a totally unintended, but cool and strange way. Would it stand on its own
without having rock to react against? Opinions?

The Japanese have recently re-issued The Parade, a late 6T's soft-pop group
whose only hit "Sunshine Girl (Won't You Stay With Me)" left a dent at the
#20 spot on the pop chart where it sat for eight weeks. The L.A.-based group
was led by Jerry Riopelle. It was on A&M and if you like the Orpheus
Association, you will like this one

>>>HELL YES it would stand on its own! Great, well-written music stands
alone on its merits, because it HAS them to begin with. Anybody who writes
music can tell you how difficult it is even to write something light or
silly, but do it well and meaningfully.(I am not a song-writer, but I play
one on TV: bud-uh-BUM!)
Les Baxter, Henry Mancini, and others who were writing film scores and
instrumentals in the late 40s and early 50s before there was a rock
dominance to "rebel" against, created amazing music, that stood alone then,
and the test of time,today!

I was thinking about this recently when I came across a name of a Brazilian
instrument called an "agogo", surprisingly similar to the oft seen phrase "au
go go". An agogo is a "melodious two-toned bell". Could be a red herring but
perhaps some one else can fill in the missing links. Perhaps the use of this
instrument in mid-sixties French pop led to "au go go"....!?

I came this close to mentioning The Love Generation when all that
Association/Free Design discussion was taking place. I really like this group,
though admittedly in small doses. I think what I like more than the music is
the following genealogy of this group.
Centering around the vocal arranging brothers Tom and John Bahler the
California Dreamers show up on a few Impulse albums including the phenomenal
1967, Gabor Szabo album "Wind Sky and Diamonds". A few years later the
brothers and many of the California Dreamers formed the Love Generation. The
similarity in the vocal arrangements is fairly evident and the happy-go-lucky
and faux protest lyrics to their songs make them poignantly absurd (a plus in
my book.) But here's the kicker, what group did the Bahler's become after the
Love Generation?
The Partridge Family!!! Yes, those wonderful vocalists backing up David Casidy
and providing lip sync material for the rest of the group was actually Bahler
and company which, I surmise, was many of the members of the Love
Gen./Califonia Dreamers.
1970 is for me the end of my period of "exotica" interests, aside from odds
and ends (moog lps, etc.) I cut my losses after this date. So, the development
of this group has for me been the perfect real life analogy as to the
development of late sixties pop into early seventies pop. But of course we all
know it wasn't the Partridge Family that killed off any decent adult
contemporary music that accolade I give to the Carpenters. Coincidentally ,
these groups first charted albums entered the charts almost within a month of
each other.

The Secret Cinema presents
"SITCOM ROCK: Rock N' Roll Episodes of Classic TV Comedies"
1999 Enhanced Version at the Trocadero
The Trocadero
10th & Arch Streets, Philadelphia
(215) 922-LIVE
Sixties garage-band The Third Bardo complained on their most famous record
that they were "Five Years Ahead Of My Time," and we here at Secret Cinema
headquarters sympathize. A little over five years ago we presented what is
still one of our best programming efforts, "Sitcom Rock," to a somewhat
underwhelming response. "Sitcom Rock" showcases special episodes of classic
situation comedies from the past -- all featuring rock band guest stars
and/or rock n' roll storylines.
Now, in the light of a Third Bardo reunion (no lie!), an Austin Powers
SEQUEL, us getting calls to show "Sitcom Rock" and "Exotica Music Films" in
cities across the country, and a '60s/mod/pop/etc. revival just getting up
to speed that could dwarf all previous sixties revivals, the time seems
ripe to present the 1999 ENHANCED VERSION of "Sitcom Rock." Enhanced,
because this time the rare film prints will be projected on the bigger
screen of the Trocadero, because we will be showing more stuff than before
(including material we've never screened anywhere), and because we will be
sharing the big Troc stage with two period-friendly pop bands -- the also
recently reformed Nixon's Head, and young surf-rock bucks The Vipers.
Unlike the last two Secret Cinema screenings/concerts at the Troc, the
films, bands and audience will all be in the big room (and not in the
Balcony). And unlike other "movie nights" at the Troc/Balcony -- this
program will be shown in 16mm film (not video).
The show is on Saturday, May 29. There will be one complete program
beginning at 9:30 pm. Doors open at 9:00 pm. Admission is $6.00.
Highlights of "Sitcom Rock" will include:
THE MUNSTERS: The Munsters agree to rent out their house to touring rock
group The Standells. When they return, they find a way-out beatnik party in
progress, but Herman soon gets in the spirit and tries out some impromptu
beat poetry (The Standells, in a pre-"Dirty Water" phase, perform "I Wanna
Hold Your Hand" and "Do The Ringo").
THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW: In a special episode of this somewhat-forgotten series
about the trials of two pairs of middle-agers coping with their married
offspring, the older set have a go at managing wild primitive rockers Sky
Saxon and The Seeds! This amazing show was directed by Desi Arnaz, and also
features Joe Besser of The Three Stooges (what a meeting of the minds!).
THE FLINTSTONES: In "Shinrock-a-Go-Go," then-popular rock showcase SHINDIG
and its host Jimmy O'Neill are caricatured, as are San Francisco's genius
folk-rock/beat group The Beau Brummels. Fred inadvertently invents a new
dance craze, "The Flintstone Flop," as "The Beau Brummelstones" play their
hit "Laugh Laugh."
Plus much more, including THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW (Opie's garage band play
their first gig at a teen party), and LOVE AMERICAN STYLE (with segments
featuring both Davy Jones and Sonny & Cher).

Heads up. For some reason, there's an avalanche of groovy movies coming up
on tv this weekend.
Lolita, Double Indemnity, Laura (heh), The Loved One, Bell Book And Candle,
2001: A Space Odyssey, A Shot In The Dark, Casino Royale, The Girl Can't
Help It, The Last Of The Secret Agents, The Ruling Class, I Married A
Monster From Outer Space, LoganÆs Run, The Man Who Fell To Earth, 20,000
Leagues Under The Sea (1916 version)...
"and many, many more." To save typing and bandwidth, check my TV Scavenger
page for details.
(like I always say, don't miss "The Loved One")
Also, all this week, A&E's Biography is featuring gals like Raquel Welch,
Jayne Mansfield, Ann-Margret.

Well, virtually nothing, except they will all be mentioned in this post!

Aloha to hula show? Kodak may quit 62-year-old attraction
AP News Service
HONOLULU (AP) _ When the dancing women of the Kodak Hula Show say aloha
next month, it may be for the last time.
Eastman Kodak Co. said Tuesday it is considering ending its sponsorship of
the 62-year-old free tourist attraction at Kapiolani
Park by the beaches of Waikiki.
``It's under consideration,'' said Everett Fritz, a Kodak distribution
manager in Hawaii.
``But there is lots of work behind the scenes to see if we can keep the
show running.''
Some of the show's performers said they have been told to start looking
for another job while city officials look for a new
sponsor.
The show features a cast of 40 men and women from the Royal Hawaiian Glee
Club, including hula dancers dressed
in traditional skirts made of green ti leaves with yellow leis around
their necks and in their hair.
At the end, the cast spells out ``Hawaii'' in giant red and yellow
letters.
The show was the idea of former Kodak executive Fritz Herman, who saw it
as a way to sell more film.
Herman thought tourists had little opportunity to take pictures of hula
dancers in daylight. It is still the only
daytime show of its kind in Hawaii, said host Kimo Kahoano.

I bet too many bastards are showing up at the show with digital cameras!
Can't sell film that way.
Other interesting note: Nearly 8% of all film that Kodak makes is exposed at
one of the Disney theme parks. (And I thought I was the one doing the
exposing at my last trip to Disney World - especially after seeing the
changed Enchanted Tiki Room Show)
And . . . the name Kodak was chosen by Eastman because it had no meaning in
any language known at the time it was selected.

Well, I know I posted something about this already, but it is a soundtrac=
k of incidental music from the 70s cartoon of the same name. I know it =
was shown in Italy, Canada, Germany and the UK, but I've never seen it =
myself. The lead man is Mr. Rossi who is travelling the world on a quest =
for happiness. The music is a hodge podge - some bits of dialogue. I thin=
k it would be of interest to lots of people on the list. The theme tune =
is very groovy in an Italo-cartoon sort of way. There are a few groovy =
numbers too. Very thorough. I'm pleased to have it...and promote it - so =
I get paid by the company, but I really do like it.

Sorry, but every time I see this signature I see "Tiki Kabob"!
