Yes, the Fleetwoods - my very favorite Seattle group!

Truly Do is truly missed on the EMI comp. I love that track, especially
the opening line when Gary sings "Hey, baby"....
>IMHO these kids seem to have been taken for granted here as EZ
>pioneers in the heyday of rock. Sweet, simple, charming and innocent,
>except maybe "Lovers By Night,Strangers By Day."
I usually lurk here, but I had to write in to comment on this. I adore
the Fleetwoods, but one thing that appeals so strongly to me about
their records is how even though the records all sound "Sweet, simple,
charming and innocent," the songs themselves are largely about affairs,
trysts and cheating. Pretty heady stuff for high school kids. A few
examples:
It's all over town, I was the last one to know...
I'm Mr. Blue when you say you're sorry then prove it by going out on the
sly...
His future's bright, my future's dim, and all the dreams we shared you
share with him...
With your arms around him, you're so glad you found him, you never once
looked up to see me...
You get the point. Barbara, Gretchen and Gary had a fantastic sense for
prosody, and to me, the most appealing aspect of their EZ sound is the
way it is juxtaposed against the haunting despair in many of their songs.
Just one guy's opinion, though.
One more quick point. The Fleetwoods' sound borrows heavily from the
Teddy Bears, so if you gotta give credit to someone for being the
pioneer of EZ vocal pop, give it to Phil Spector (who resurrected that
sound on his Paris Sisters sides too).
>[The Fleetwoods are] Great nighttime music.
Now THAT I agree with 100%!
For much, much more on the Fleetwoods (and Martin Denny!) -

Great article, thanks.
And in case anyone else is as morricone-obsessed as me, the fantastic
'canto morricone' series is available through cduniverse.com for
around $17 per CD (oddly, they are listed as 'soundtrack collections:
the morricone songbook); you can also get $5 off at the moment by
typing 'save' into the promotional box. They are well worth it;
volume 3 is particularly exquisite, and volume 1 contains one great
track salvaged from the Danger:Diabolik score, 'Deep Down' by Christy
(a futuristic masterpiece, discussed on this list a few times before).
regards, Jonny
ps more on canto morricone is here:

needless to say, I have nothing to do with these releases, I just like
them very much...

The whole album was influenced from growing up in the suburbs during the

Bill Cosby will be giving the commencement speech for the Medical University
of South Carolina's class this Saturday here in Charleston. My dad is the
president of the alumni association this year and said he will probably be
talking to Cosby at the reception/dinner afterwards.
I told my dad to tell him that some dude in England recently bought one of
his used albums for $ 4.00. No joke - I really asked him to do this. My dad
thinks stuff like this is funny and said he would do it.
Now, if I actually HAD that album here I could probably get my dad to get
Cosby to sign the record! Then the album would then be worth . . . . oh, I
don't know . . . . . . . . . .$ 4.50?

The 6 players are all members of classical symphony orchestras, and they
succeed in turning spy thriller music into a super-clean and boring
cathedral concert. The arrangements give new meaning to the word
"conservative". The sound is crystal-clear, but also ice-cold and thin,
which makes the "wide dynamic-range" warning on the cover ridiculous. A bad
joke, if you ask me.

Saw about 1/2 hour of this when it was on AMC. Turned it off and went to
bed.
I felt bad about not staying up to watch it. It's camp, I'm supposed to
LIKE stuff like this now! :')
Guess there is a difference between the bad stuff that is good (Casino
Royal?) and the bad stuff that is just plain bad....
missed the bullet bra part....would have stuck with it if I knew Les Baxter
did the music! Exotica research.
BTW, saw the Austin Powers trailer yesterday when I went to see That Other
Summer Movie. A hoot. A new sidekick for Dr. Evil.... a 1/8th size Dr. Evil
clone. Reminded me of the remake of The Island of Dr Moreau with Brando.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Mary Lou Conrad, a longtime figure in Indiana
Democratic politics who wrote former Sen. Birch Bayh's signature campaign
theme song, ``Hey, Look Me Over,'' died Friday. She was 64.
Mrs. Conrad's marriage to Larry Conrad, the state's former secretary of
state, brought her into politics. But she wrote her own footnote in
political history in 1962 when, as a worker in Bayh's first senatorial bid,
she wrote ``Hey, Look Me Over.''
The jingle became popular and won a national song-writing award.

It closed on Dec. 17, 1982, and has stood shuttered ever since.
Mapes' hotel was the first in the country to feature gambling, dining,
entertainment and luxury accommodations under one roof.
Among those performing at the Mapes were Sammy Davis Jr., Mae West, the
Marx Brothers, Gypsy Rose Lee and Danny Thomas.
Its unique art deco style earned it a listing on the National Register of
Historic Places in 1984. The resort was named last year as one of the most
endangered historic places in the country by the National Trust for Historic
Preservation.
*Kyriacos Demetriou
NEW YORK (AP) -- Kyriacos Demetriou, a haircutter whose old-fashioned
barbershop was recreated in the Museum of the City of New York when he
retired three years ago, died Friday. He was 80.
Demetriou, known by customers as Mr. Kay, took over the Broadway
Barbershop in the 1950s. The shop, founded in 1904, was the oldest in the city.
Newspapers and magazines described Mr. Kay, who gave lollipops to his
younger customers and straight-razor shaves to his older ones, as a
throwback to the days before unisex salons, stylists and blow-driers.
Mr. Kay's barbershop, with its old, shiny appliances and a radio tuned to
a classical music station, was visited by numerous celebrities. He told of
cutting Yul Brynner's hair -- when the actor had hair. He also trimmed and
shaved Humphrey Bogart and George Gershwin.
Mr. Kay, who was born in Cyprus but grew up in England, began working as a
shoeshine boy outside a barbershop in London's West End before learning to
cut hair. In his 20s, he won a contest selecting England's best barber. He
moved to New York shortly before World War II.
*Bruce Fairbairn
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Record producer Bruce Fairbairn, who
started as a musician and went on to produce some of rock's most successful
acts, was found dead Monday. He was 49.
The cause of death was not immediately known.
Fairbairn's portfolio included Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen, Kiss,
Cranberries, Loverboy and Bon Jovi. He produced Kiss' ``Psycho Circus''
album last year, which returned the reunited veteran hard rock band to the
charts.
Fairbairn got his start in the `60s as a trumpet player in local rhythm and
blues bands. His first serious recording band was called Sunshyne.
The experience led to the formation of the hitmaking Prism in the 1970s
with Fairbairn as trumpet player and producer.
*Jerry Wunderlich
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Hollywood set decorator Jerry Wunderlich, who got Oscar
nominations for ``The Exorcist'' in 1973 and ``The Last Tycoon'' in 1976,
died Sunday of a heart attack. He was 74.
His other film credits included ``The Singing Nun,'' ``Audrey Rose,'' ``The
Entity,'' ``WarGames,'' ``Heat'' and ``The Two Jakes.''
For many years, he designed the decor for the Governors Ball following the
Academy Awards ceremonies.
*Henry Jones
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Tony Award-winning actor Henry Jones, whose career on
Broadway and in movies and television spanned more than half a century, died
Monday from injuries suffered in a fall at his home. He was 86.
The character actor's bulldog face was familiar from dozens of Broadway
plays and films and 350 television shows, where he played everything from
judges to janitors and murderers to ministers.
When he began his career, ``the casting directors didn't know what to do
with me,'' Jones once recalled. ``I was never tall enough or good looking
enough to play juvenile leads.''
He did have several memorable roles.
In the 1950s, he was the handyman killed by deadly child Patty McCormack in
the Broadway play ``The Bad Seed,'' a role he repeated in the film.
In 1958, he won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Louis Howe, confidante of
Franklin D. Roosevelt, in ``Sunrise at Campobello.''
His three dozen films included ``Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,''
``Arachnophobia,'' ``The Grifters'' and Alfred Hitchock's ``Vertigo,'' in
which he played a coroner and delivered a four-minute monologue.
Born in Philadelphia and educated at St. Joseph's College, Jones began his
career with theater work in the 1930s and made his Broadway debut in 1938 as
a gravedigger in ``Hamlet.''
His movie career started in 1943 with Irving Berlin's ``This Is the Army.''
He was an Army private at the time.
His TV roles began when the medium was in its infancy, with such classics
as ``Playhouse 90.'' More recently, he was Sam in the 1994 Hallmark Hall of
Fame production of ``Breathing Lessons,'' and in 1995 was the Assayer in
``Picture Windows.''

Subject: (exotica) off-topic: favorites
I could use some technical advice -- as many may guess, my Favorites (yep,
I'm on Internet Explorer) files of bookmarks are large, extensive and
unwieldly (just like real life I never throw anything away). I'd like to
transport my Favorites to another PC. Is there some simple way of doing
this? Is there a way to convert all that stuff to something that would fit
on a floppy?
Educate me off-list if you don't want to bother the rest of the gang.
Thanks for the space, folks!

I do agree. Even with Frankie Avalon's mugging performance, "Dr. Goldfoot &
The Bikini Machine" is much easier viewing than Mario Bava's "Dr. Goldfoot
& The Girlbombs". Hard to believe "Girlbombs" is from the same director
that did "Black Sunday", no? "Girlbombs" is very dire, but if you can get
your head in the right (wrong) place, it *is* a unique experience. That
tormented Italian comedy team (don't know their names... they're in the
'Martin & Lewis wannabe' tradition) really takes it over the edge.

> The odds of actually (uh-oh, dirty words again) making money on what you
post are exponentially greater. I'd love love love to GIVE my vinyl away to
friends and acquaintences, but the fact is, my income is highly unstable, and
eBay affords me an opportunity to reach a wide and interested marketplace.
The odds of making more money than what you might think is reasonable is
certainly higher (any comments Jack Diamond) but on ebay you have to set a
minimum amount so if that minimum could be reached or exceded by offering
that first to list members why not?
This list contains many the djs who will give that music back by playing it
live
and Exotica lovers who have given to others by offering their expertise and
comments free of charge here on the list so it is not like you are giving
something for nothing
I understand that this list was originally set up to be non-profit but I
think the rules have been stretched to allow OFFline bidding/selling based on
notification which is no different than notifying the list about an ebay
item. somehow the fact that the item is on ebay does not make it any more
official or any less of an announcement of sale.
And personally I have no problem with that.
The problem that I was trying to point out is that you have a forum here but
you are giving that forum over to ebay and at what point will this stop?
thanks, Otto

Subject: (exotica) free designing hippies
I was in Tower records at lunch time and spotted a 4 volume comp of this
Orpheus/Association hippy harmony good feeling late 60's music called Sunshine Days.
Nothing to obscure on them but a lot of hit pseudo hippie harmony singles compiled.
The cds were rather short and the price was $11.99 at Tower .
I remember only a few songs on one of the discs: Windy by the Association, Daydream
by the Spoonful, Groovin by the Rascals, Grazing in the Grass by the Friends of
Distinction and 59th Street Bridge Song by Haprers Bizzarre and a song by Spanky and
Our Gang. There also was Sunny Afternoon by the Kinks which didn't seem to fit in
with the tone and mood of the rest ot the album but I never pass up a chance to mention
the Kinks.

Actually Nat wrote this and this is quoted from Chuck's response. Spanky &
Our Gang fall into the soft pop category and of course, so do the Sandpipers.
I also found 3 45-singles in my 6T's Pop Box listers might keep an eye out
for: "The French Girl" by The Daily Flash (on Uni), "You Can't Grow Peaches
On A Cherry Tree" by Just Us (on Colpix) and "Promise Me" by A Group Called
Us (on Patty)

Subject: (exotica) The Fleetwoods
Just wanted to add that the sound of the Fleetwoods is very much in touch with the
modern soft pop underproduce music coming out today on Siesta/Elephant indie type
labels. The gentle harmonies of these indie bands remind me so much of the Teddy
Bears or the Fleetwoods.
I personally believe this sound originated with the Big Band vocal groups on some of
their soft harmonizing ballads or the softer edged doo wop songs.
Even though Richie Vallens was singing by himself, his Donna (which was the bigger hit
over La Bamba, the flip side, where he also pioneered "Latin Rock') also predates the
Teddy Bears and I believe the Fleetwoods and is in the same vain. And don't forgert
Ricky Nelson whose producer was very fond of turning up the echo and letting Ricky
harmonize with himsef. Ricky was also a pioneer of "Country Rock"
Also one of my favorite songs out of Seattle is "Tall Cool One" by the Wailers, sp? It
still sends chills down my spine. Special mention always goes to Louie Louie whose
vocalist was described by David Marsh as sounding like Donald Duck on helium, not to
mention the drummer who always seems to be a little behind and the riot ot a lead.
The Kinks were quoted as saying they redid the song as "You Really Got Me"

I'm new to the group and have heard only passing references to the Exotic
Triology. What is this?? Can you provide more background?
Is this stuff actually available somewhere (my impression it is a bootleg...)?
On CD perhaps?
