I can't quote from the book and admit to being a record collector for many a
Moon, but above and beyond the above-mentioned groups, the book, as I recall,
continually referred to specific songs as being excellent. Most of them were
well known and although good, it didn't seem to me to be a used record shop
proprietor's "want list" by any stretch. I kept thinking that if I were to
visit that record shop (in '95), there probably wouldn't be a whole lot I
would need, based on his favored songs and records. Ok book, can wait forever
for the movie

DJJimmy answered the Groovin question correctly with < Young Rascals,
later known as Rascals, Italo/Soul band from Lawn Guyland>
I've been meaning for years to bring up this great puffy-shirt group's
probable Lawn Guyland(the phonetic spelling?) wedding band roots, as
evidenced by their 2nd LP "Collections", which includes "Since I Fell
For You" and my very favorite version of Riz Ortolani's "More", a wild
slow-fast-slow Hammond-slammin lounge classic with Eddie Brigati
warbling away, the gals swooning, and the groomsmen sneaking in some
slow dance grinds with the bridesmaids.....and to think i used to skip
over this cut!

When I listen to the early Brazilian music, as represented on the "Brezil-the
early years"-CDs, I notice that the songs seem to be based on often repeated
strong chorus-lines sung unisono by groups of men and women, designed to be
sung along as part of the fun of enjoying this kind of music. It seems to me
that the people at that time were singing and/or dancing to music when
listening, as a group experience. I remember when I was a kid we were
visiting this friend of my mother in Italy, this beautiful film actrice, and
she would take any opportunity to sing, like when driving around in her
convertible car, or walking at the beach, and she would always reprimand me
when I would not join her. I belong to the generation that has grown up
entirely with records and tapes and no live music at all. I think I was 13
when I heard my first live concert; (according to neurologists it's too late
then). You can also see this kind of collective singing enchantment in Tati's
film "Mon oncle", when this group of people drives around in Paris ( like from
one bar to the next) in a horse carrier and they all sing the incredibly
catchy title melody of the movie all the time.

Volume 2 is what I was writing about. If you want I can give you the artist's

Folks
apologies for the off-topic post but since we're all audio addicts here, i
thought it likely that someone might have some useful info, which i'll be
sharing with a number of people who are having similar problems ...
i have an Macintosh 8600 which i bought mainly so that i could start to
edit sound files at full bandwidth.
however i'm finding that when the RCA In is selected as audio input device,
i'm getting a certain amount of mains hum coming thru even before i plug
anything in ... strangely this doesn't happen when External Mic is selected
as input device ... or any other input option for that matter ... so when
i record anything on to the Mac thru the RCA In input it has this low hum
on it ... it's driving me crazy ...
does anyone have any idea what my problem could be and more importantly how
i can get rid of it?
or even some on-line resources that might be useful
i'm in the UK by the way ...
much apreciated

In the absence of any other books set in used-record stores, "High
Fidelity" comes off okay but I too thought the book fell short of my hopes.
I'm not going to go and pull it off the shelves to prove my point but like
Jimmy, I also thought that the musical references were limited to a very
familiar "pop rock so-called collector's records". But that's okay. There
are probably more people collecting that kind of stuff than anything else
in the greater record collector world.
As far as the movie goes, if it wasn't Stephen Frears and John Cusack
involved, I would be certain that the used-record store context would just
become a backdrop and nothing more.
But something tells me that those involved are "hip" enough to properly
exploit the whole record-collecting ambience.
I posted about this after I read an item in a local paper about
transplanted Torontonian Neko Case going down to Chicago to audition for
the part of the singer. According to the item, she didn't think she got
the part but still, if they're hip enough to know about her, that's a
hopeful sign.
But if you're looking for a film with slightly more record-collecting and
exotica content, well... wait a couple of months and I'll tell you about one.

Speaking of the Rascals... (You want me to name the individual members?
They had no bass player btw.) I can't remember the name of the record but
I'm sure someone here will know it... Anyway in their latter days, they
changed from a hot rock combo into a pseudo jazz band and did at least one
record with Alice Coltrane playing harp.
(Am I dreaming? I know there was harp but maybe it wasn't Alice.)
That's not exactly exotica content but that record is pretty exotic and
mellow and even kind of great in parts.

OK OK, got it. (Around the parts where I live black men have names like Roberto
Blanco) Still, there IS a dimension in Brazilian music, that I can't explain any
other than "black", and I think it's essential and I like it and I find it
represented in the Brazilica 2 comp. If there's someone in the list who is

Various Artists
Roosevelt in Trinidad: Calypsos of Events, Places, and Personalities
1933-1939
Songs about British royalty, American movie stars and singers, of local
politics, sporting events and disasters all vie for attention in the calypso
song. Enormously popular during the 1930s, today these songs are a window on
a specific place and time, mirroring contemporary attitudes towards
international events. But more than that, these songs are charming, clever,
philosophical and funny, possessing a sophisticated (and often biting) wit.
Several of the songs heard here were revived in the '70s by such artists as
Ry Cooder, Van Dyke Parks and others.

Yup, that CD set must be the best rocksteady compilation ever. It also got
the Paragons original version of "The Tide is High" on it of course. My
favorite reggae cover is still Alton Ellis version of "A Whiter Shade of
Pale" on his Studio One album Alton Ellis sings Rock and Soul. Gently
flowing rhythm and great organ (probably by Jackie Mittoo). Nice versions of
Massachusetts and Baby Now That I've Found You on there too.

Subject: (exotica) Cirque du Soleil / Yma Sumac
Got dragged to the "Quidam" show in Amsterdam yesterday (yes folks, love is
blind). The otherwise forgettable score of the show had one surprising
exotic highlight when during the first act (crap comedy) after the
intermission an Yma Sumac song blasted through the speakers. Me jumping up
of course and shouting "hey! I know that!!". Anyway, it was a fast paced
mambo song which I didn't recognise at all, anyone knows by any chance which
song they did use?

Booker T. & The MG's did a real tasty version of "Groovin'". I have it on
"The Best Of Booker T. & The MG's" (LP, Atlantic). Probably appeared
somewhere else first.

Yma Sumac song at the end. Anyone know which song they use?

That looks like a good one. From my experience you can't go wrong when it comes
to 30's calypso collections.
My favorite is "Where Was Butler" which came out on a Folklyric (9908) LP, I
don't know if some or all of this came out on the later Rounder CDs.
Other recommendations are:
Wilmoth Houdini from the 1930's, Folklyric LP 9040
Calypso Breakaway, Rounder 1054 (LP/CD)
Calypso Calaloo, Rounder 1105 (LP/CD)
there is also at least one other Rounder collection that I've heard but don't
own, but I don't recall the title.

I was interested to read this. The book actually irritated me, because my
friends said 'the guy in the book - he's into music - he's just like you!'.
Then when I read it, I felt that 'Rob' was really just into classic 'Rock,
Blues and Soul'. I feel that this 'Rock, Blues and Soul' thing is the
whole reason why I never got into lots of the music we discuss on this list
before a few years ago. It was like I didn't know it existed!
And that's why the thread 'how do I describe what kind of music I like to
people I meet' often comes up on this list.
I feel that the official history of popular music bypasses most of the
stuff I enjoy most, and it seemed to me that the record shop owned by 'Rob'
did just the same, even if he did ridicule a standard mainstream rock
record collection.

I picked up a Hewlett Packard CD-R/RW (Model 8110i) recently and will try to

If any body has any comments or tips on installation please email me (of list

I also want to know the creative ways that the folks with burners have put
