NOW NOW, peaceful, brothers and sisters! As long as there is capit...,
uh, competion, there will be people who sell AND want as much for their
items as possible and people who buy AND want to pay for these items as
little as possible. However you organize the trade... Our notorious
Karl Marx has found out these amazing facts over a hundred years ago.
Searching around in eBay just makes one all too greedy! Get rid of those
earthly desires, free yourself from the concentration camps of your
minds and find the spiritual dimensions of EXOTICA! Do you think Michael
Jackson is happier because he can buy any record he wants to for any
price? Does it make his music any better?
Be happy with less (just think of the next time you have to move),
collect JPEGs, buy flowers for your mother!

Not that I noticed, and they sound good, thanks.
According to CDNow (just an information source, since they are
charging $31.49), there is indeed a Brazilica Vol. 2 (cat. no. ELEKT
M91413). They give a track listing, but no artists.

I think this missed Otto's point. I think Otto was saying, if you are going
to have a yard sale why not ask your friends if they want first option on
what you have to offer. Especially if you and the friends have the same

Don't get me wrong, I like ebay and have bought about 40 things from sellers.
I just think Otto's point is very valid.

Of course only one will get to taste the sweet carrot. The rest of the
jackasses in line will watching the one fat assed donkey (with gobs of
cashola) devour the prize.
I find it interesting that many of the records at eBay that are posted by
amateurs (the ones with a few feedbacks) are being bought by dealers. I have
watched a few that get immediately recycled with a higher reserve.
Go figure.

There's a volume 3. And three volumes of 'Talkin' Jazz' from the same
people which contain some exotic-ish and some latin-y MPS label stuff.

I don't know whay you had such a ridiculous reaction to your postings on
eBay. Is this guy who protested next going to complain about records one buys
at a thrift store because it's not fair that he doesn't live within driving
distance. The reason to put something up for sale is so you get as much as
possible for it. But I guess this guy thinks its OK only if something sells
for a price HE is willing to pay. Post away it is a service to everyone on

The name of that song is "Groovin'" by the Young Rascals, on Atlantic,
which is easily obtainable. It can be found on "The Very Best of the
Rascals". CDNow has it for $9.99 and on the whole is sung better than
Parcells and his athletes. If you don't want to spend the dough call your
local oldies station and make a request. It's one of those songs that is
played quite a lot.

Sorry Otto,
I didn't realize this original posting was from you! I must apologize for the
grumpy mood I am at this morning.
But for someone whose views i always concur with and who is one of the most
intellifgent and respected contributors to this list, I am really surprised
at your comments and must take the contrary point with you on this.
eBay is just another public forum for sale. When a dealer sells his stuff at
a record convention he is paying a fee just like he does to eBay to allow
their stuff to go for sale. Having a group of dealers at a record show or
flea market from around the country is a great idea and I don't mind paying
the entrance fee to have that oppertunity to find things I wouldn't find in
my local used record shops.
On eBay you can do the looking for free, no entry fee. So who is the bigger
exploiter here. the record conventions or eBay?

Though I am probably treading where one Ms. Fondle normally does, it seemed
that there was almost no form of music that he couldn't do plausibly! The
"Wild in the Streets" soundtrack features 'Psychedelic Senate" by him,
which is indeed trippy and not only did he compose a great deal of Exotica,
encompassing African and Latin influences, he also played Jazz and and
success with MOR. Funky doesn't come as a surprise in this context, but it
is good to hear that his protean talent fit yet another genre!

*Judy Chabola
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Judy Chabola, an award-winning choreographer and stage
director of televised events including the Olympics and Emmy, Grammy and
Academy Awards ceremonies, died Sunday of breast cancer. She was 47.
Chabola was special events coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School
District when she volunteered to help with the 1984 summer Olympics. She
contributed to the dance routines for the opening and closing ceremonies at
the Los Angeles Coliseum.
That assignment won a Bob Fosse Award in choreography for her and her
co-creator, Kenny Ortega. They both were nominated for an Emmy.
Ms. Chabola choreographed the ceremonies for the 1992 Olympics in
Barcelona, the 1992 and 1994 soccer World Cup, and 10 Super Bowl half-time
shows. She worked on more than 100 special events and TV broadcasts,
including Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Billboard and Essence awards.
*Sally Payne Kelly
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Sally Payne Kelly, an actress who appeared in a series
of 1940s Westerns with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry before becoming an
illustrator for children's books, died Saturday. She was 85.
Originally known as the ``Sunshine Girl'' of artists' models, Sally Payne
came to Hollywood under contract to appear in Republic Studios cowboy films.
She made her debut in a bit part as a tourist in the 1934 film ``Hollywood
Hobbies.'' By 1940, before moving into a series of westerns, she had
appeared as a maid in ``No, No, Nanette'' and as Lucy Endover in ``La Conga
Nights.''
She married Western Airlines executive Arthur F. Kelly in 1942 and turned
to art. She painted oils for her home and those of friends and illustrated a
series of ``Small Star'' children's books, including ``Neighbors.''
*Leon Thomas
NEW YORK (AP) -- Leon Thomas, a jazz singer known for his ululating style,
died Saturday of heart failure as a result of leukemia. He was 61.
Thomas developed his wordless yodeling style -- which he later called
``soularphone'' -- in the late 1960s when he performed with musician Pharoah
Sanders. His elastic throat articulation was compared to African pygmy and
American Indian singing techniques.
Along with Sanders, Thomas helped develop ``kosmigroov,'' a type of
spiritual African-tinged soul-jazz exemplified in recordings like ``The
Creator Has a Master Plan'' (1969) and ``Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum Allah''
(1970).
Born in Illinois, Thomas moved to New York in 1958 and worked as a straight
blues-jazz singer. By the mid-1960s he was performing with Count Basie and
Mary Lou Williams.
Later in his career he recorded albums for the Flying Dutchman label, and
spent two years with the band Santana. In recent years, he often sang at the
Lenox Lounge in Harlem.

Leon Thomas, 61, Jazz Singer Known for 'Yodel'
By BEN RATLIFF,NYTimes
Leon Thomas, a jazz singer known for his bellowing glottal-stop style in
free jazz of the 1970's, died on Saturday at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx.
He was 61 and lived in the Bronx.
The cause was heart failure as a result of leukemia, Karen Dagneau, his tour
manager, said.
Thomas, who was born in East St. Louis, Ill., and studied music at Tennessee
State University, moved to New York in 1958. With his stout tenor voice, he
worked as a straight blues-jazz singer, performing with Count Basie and Mary
Lou Williams in the mid-60's. But by then he had also begun to spend time
with young jazz musicians, like Randy Weston and Pharoah Sanders, who were
looking to Africa, the East and meditation for musical material.
Onstage with Sanders in the late 60's Thomas developed his ululating singing
style, which has been compared to African pygmy and American Indian singing
techniques, and which he later called "soularphone." He believed that his
ancestors had given him his elastic throat articulation, he said, and
henceforth always used it.
Pharoah Sanders tracks like "The Creator Has a Master Plan" from 1969 and
"Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum Allah" from 1970 were full of Thomas's wordless
yodeling over band vamps.
This kind of spiritual African-tinged soul-jazz has become known as
"kosmigroov."
After working with Sanders and making some of his own albums for the Flying
Dutchman label, he spent two years with the band Santana.
In the last few years he often sang at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem.
Thomas is survived by a son, Amos, of the Bronx, and a brother, Curtis of
St. Louis.

Or get a musical instrument and make your own music (go with percussion if
you're intimidated by notes). You don't have to be brilliant -- just relax
and have fun. As the old Sears Catalog used to say, "Music self-played is
happiness well-made." It concerns me that most people today probably
perceive music as a product you purchase, rather than a living art made by
living people.

In the "soundtrack is better than the film" department, we
have...HONKY! Ahh,yes, as the film description says on the box, "a
love story...about hate" or something simpy. Anyway, it's an
inter-racial love affair b-movie, set in the early 70s...lots of talk
about "turning on" and "hang-ups". But the film score cat, Quincy
Jones, is of course, oh-so-A-list..Anybody know whether the groovy OST
for HONKY was ever released?

This explains a lot about the Jungle Exotica LP's (I was given vol 2 for
my birthday) Wild Wild LP, Raw strange surf/bongo/murky music. Its
fun, but I can't listen to too much at one sitting, just one side at a
time.
Laura, the back from the grave Lps are pure 60's punk, reissues of
real low budget limited run singles produced by the disaffected youth of
the American middle classes. Some of the artists appear on the pebbles
LPs, but the stuff here is more demented (or more stupid), and better
quality pressings than my (80's) copies of pebbles. I think my
favourite though is highs of the mid 60s. Just for 'The light Show'.
From: Brian Phillips <hagar@mindspring.net>
If any of you decide to buy any of the BFTG collections (there are 8
volumes), which are all heartily recommended by myself, buy the LPs if
you
can. The compiler (Tim Warren) hates CDs so much, he will actually lop
off
songs from the CD and put more on the vinyl. He also distributes or
actually compiled "Jungle Exotica", which leans more toward Rock than
orchestrated material but is enjoyable all the same.

Off from a tangent from this I played out 'No Opportunity Neccessary No

keeping with the rest of my set. Lovely fat organ sound, strings
lifted from the theme to The Big Country and a wonderful bassline that
just keeps going faster and faster. Straight into a Gert Wilden
afterwards, lahvlee.
I promise, strictly on-list next post.

I did a short radio show on just that many beautiful moons ago.
Considering cartoon soundtracks of the time, shows like "It Pays To Be

not
too surprising. I agree that that would be a cool idea.

The May 13 Washington Post had a good article about a guy named F.B.
Wiggins who has played a key role in some re-issues of Bing Crosby's
music. I know that Bing falls perhaps just outside of the fuzzy exotica
border, but I found the article interesting with their perspective of
what gets re-issued and what gets left behind.
The article is positive and inspiring....those of you who are interested
in releasing some locked treasures from the corporate vaults might enjoy
it also

Hillbilly Boogie (Columbia)

Glad you like our crap!
If you are interested in production music, you probably know
that most of the Ren & Stimpy cuts were from the Capitol /
KPM libraries. (Caroline Records has two great CDs of
this stuff). We also use the Chappell Music library. It
includes the Captain Kangaroo cue we used in the first
commercial we did for Old Navy (There is a quicktime
version of that commercial on our website if you are
interested.) Most of the music in our web cartoons comes
from Chappell. The Chappell library also has great drama
and crime cues. (A CD called "Betty Page Danger Girl" had
a lot of these on it...)
We just finished a prime time special for Cartoon Network
starring Ranger Smith and Yogi Bear. We had the "cartoon music
expert" Daniel Goldmark research the stock music used in the
original series and we were able to license some of them. In
a few cases, it was first time these tracks had been used in
decades.
Unfortunately, just like consumer CD's a lot of the libraries
had undergone digital mauling. The stock music companies seem
to feel the need to put digital reverb on old cuts, and filter
out all the surface noise until the music loses all of its
punch. On many of the most important cues, like John Seeley
and William Loose's "Toboggan Run", we were able to convince
them to pull the original acetate masters and make us straight
unaltered dubs off of those. The funny thing is, I was watching
an old Yogi Bear cartoon from the early sixties, and there
were pops and clicks in the exact same places that there was
pops and clicks on the acetate they pulled for us! Even back
then, they sounded pretty much the same.
In any case, you will really like the music... lots of great
Jack Shandlain, George Hormel, John Seeley and William Loose
tracks mixed in. It really gives it the feel of the old show.
See ya

Rob, the main character in High Fidelity, has his 36th birthday in the novel.
Rob at one point spends a long paragraph talking about the meaning in Dusty
Springfield's version of 'The Look of Love' The book was first published in
1995, if it would be written today, I would expect the Rob character to make a
few more lounge/exotica references. I had the definite impression he was NOT
into the mainstream...instead he ridicules much of it. This excerpt happens
when he is looking through the CD collection of his girlfriend's
co-workers......
"So I wander over to the shelf, and turn my head to one side and squint, and
sure enough, it's a disaster area, the sort of CD collection that is so
poisonously awful that it should be put in a steel case and shipped off to some
Third World waste dump. They're all there: Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Kate
Bush, Pink Floyd, Simply Red, the Beatles, of course, Mike Oldfield (Tubular
Bells I and II), Meat Loaf.....I don't have much time to examine the vinyl, but
I see a couple of Eagles records"
good book, now waiting for the movie

Okay, I got my copy *reserved* and I'm going
to pick it up on my way home tonight, so
I guess I can let the cat out of the bag.
I've been wanting this so badly ever since
I saw _Theremin_. Oh, and coincidentally,
I picked up Clara Rockmore's CD yesterday
for $9.99 -- it's going to be a theremin-
inspired finals week for me.
From the Dustygroove web page:
"Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman/Les Baxter/Harry Revel -- Theremin -- Music Out

Amazing! This is a stunning 3 CD set that reissues the original 10"
albums of early Theremin material by Dr. Samuel Hoffman!
The records were originally issued by Capitol and RCA in the early 50's,
and they're as rare as can be on vinyl. This set
packs tiny 5" replicas of the albums themselves into a tiny box, along
with a very nice booklet that contains a wealth of
information on Hoffman, the Theremin, and lots of other nice bits. The
orchestrations for the albums are by Les Baxter and
Billy May, and the works were written by the enigmatic Harry Revel. The
sound is incredible, and is a wild mix of sci fi and
easy themes, with a feel that is out of this world! The package is more
beautiful than we can describe, and this is a
long-overdue tribute to 3 of the weirdest records of all time!"

Yes, yes, YES ! This is one of my favorite versions of Perfidia but
technically it's a rock-steady tune not ska. When she says "sock it to me
baby" in the middle of the song it gives me a shiver. It can be had on the CD
collection "Duke Reid's Treasure Chest - Treasure Isle Rock-Steady" on
Heartbeat 95/96 (this 2-cd set has since been broken up into two singly issued
cds)

Quite bizarre.
Also got Ray Charles Singers Command Performances on Command. Not a big =

A couple of Herb Alpert rekkids, the ubiquitous Goin' Places (what the =

Not a bad haul for under 5 bucks.
