Hi there, all! Just a quick note to let you know that I've put a long
list of unusual vinyl (exotica, moog, theremin, poetry, etc.) up on
eBay, and you can browse the list at the link below. If you like what's
there, keep checking...I'm moving to Australia at year's end, so I must
get rid of EVERYTHING (more or less). and every few days there'll be a
dozen more gems. Thanks for the shameless pitch-space!

Our keyboardist-extraordinaire has a day job, as a professional Thankyou
man for Harvard. He sent this to me today:
"I just wrote letter to a guy named Sid Bass who lives in Fort Worth,
Texas.
I wonder if it's the same Sid Bass who was an arranger for RCA. He made
some good atomic era instrumental pop. He was also the unfortunate
arranger for the Sgt. Barry Sadler LP. Maybe someone on the exotica list
would know if he lives in Fort Worth."

I got the Classics set... Complete and chronological from 1938 to 1943
on three CDs, but like a lot of CDs on this label, the sound quality
is pretty variable. How is the sound on the Columbia and ASV collections?
>The only frustrating thing that can be derived

In the recordings I have heard, you can barely hear the bass, but
that might just be a case of digital manipulation to eliminate
surface noise. (I wish they would just leave stuff alone.)
>For those who like their Classical music done Jazz style, this was a
>specialty of the Kirby groups as illustrated by "Beethoven Riffs On"
The liner notes in the Classics CDs (which are very condescending
to Kirby) say that classical novelty charts were a staple in a
lot of bands at the time. It would be great for a record label to
collect all the best tunes that "jazz the classics" into a single
package.

The Sonics "The Witch" is a different tune than "She's My Witch"!
Sixties punk/garagepunk compilations are usually a goldmine for demented fun
songs. My favorite still is vol. 3 of the Pebbles series called "The Acid
Gallery" which has to be heard to be believed. Other series like Back From
the Grave also have their brilliant moments like The Crusher IThe Novas) or
Scream (Ralph Nielsen & Chancellors). The recent "Scum of the Earth"

Subject: (exotica) [obit] Saul Steinberg
NEW YORK (AP) -- Saul Steinberg, a cartoonist whose work was compared to
Pablo Picasso and is perhaps best known for his drawing showing New York
City as the center of the world, has died. He was 84.
Steinberg, who drew cartoons for The New Yorker magazine for more than 50
years, died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. His brooding doodles were
considered a fine art and drew comparisons to legendary painters such as
Picasso and Duchamp. Art critic Harold Rosenberg described Steinberg as ``a
writer of pictures, an architect of speech and sounds, a draftsman of
political reflections.''
Among Steinberg's most famous cartoons is ``View of the World from 9th
Avenue (1975),'' which first appeared on the magazine's cover the following
year. The drawing shows a bird's-eye view of the world looking west from
Manhattan, with the great detail of New York streets fading into ill-defined
clumps for the rest of the nation and the world.
This perspective -- as seen in the cartoon from the standpoint of a
chauvinistic Manhattanite -- spawned similar drawings for numerous cities,
including London, Paris, Rome and Venice.
Born in Romania in 1914, Steinberg studied at the University of Bucharest
before moving to Italy, where he received a doctoral degree in architecture
in 1940.
But Steinberg began drawing in 1934, quickly discovering his skill as a
cartoonist. The New Yorker published its first Steinberg cartoon in 1941, a
sketch of a reverse centaur. Steinberg arrived in the United States a year
later.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy, and had tasks ranging from
teaching Chinese guerrillas to blow up bridges, to producing
counter-propaganda drawings meant to stir anti-Nazi sentiment within Germany.
Later, his works included architectural fantasies, watercolor landscapes
and vicious pictures of New York street life that indicated a pessimism
about urban life. Among his images were depictions of Mickey Mouse as a
terrorist clad in combat boots, doormen saluting as soldiers and building
facades as frightening mazes.
Steinberg is survived by Hedda Lindenberg Sterne, whom he married in 1943.
They were separated in the 1970s but never divorced.

The Columbia I have on record and the sound is very good indeed. Mono, no
fake stereo, good bass response. I can only vouch for other ASV releases
having good sound, for they seem to take the time and get the sound right.
Their "Banned" and "Cotton Club" comps boasted good sound.
>In the recordings I have heard, you can barely hear the bass, but

Not so on the Columbia issue, which was done before CBS went digital
remastering-happy; a process that sometimes served well or gave you too
much treble or too much bass.

I did a short radio show on just that many beautiful moons ago.
Considering cartoon soundtracks of the time, shows like "It Pays To Be
Ignorant" and even "progressive" rock groups like ELP and Yes, this is not
too surprising. I agree that that would be a cool idea.
Anecdote time: I am a big fan of an old radio show called the Goon Show. I
went to a convention in England, which was attended by the two surviving
cast members, Spike Milligan and Sir Harry Secombe. Milligan is not only a
writer (he wrote or co-wrote almost all 162 shows), but a musician (trumpet
and guitar). That night, he was playing at being the crochety old man, no
photos were allowed, he signed no autographs and didn't shake a single
hand. He answered the various questions with the usual answers and I
asked, "Are you a fan of John Kirby?" and it turns out that he was/is! It
seemed as if it was one of the times that he was interested that night.

If any of you decide to buy any of the BFTG collections (there are 8
volumes), which are all heartily recommended by myself, buy the LPs if you
can. The compiler (Tim Warren) hates CDs so much, he will actually lop off
songs from the CD and put more on the vinyl. He also distributes or
actually compiled "Jungle Exotica", which leans more toward Rock than
orchestrated material but is enjoyable all the same.

volumes), which are all heartily recommended by myself, buy the LPs if you
can. The compiler (Tim Warren) hates CDs so much, he will actually lop off
songs from the CD and put more on the vinyl. He also distributes or
actually compiled "Jungle Exotica", which leans more toward Rock than
orchestrated material but is enjoyable all the same.
Brian Phillips
>>>Brian, you MUST know that I don't wanna get into another ponderous "what
is exotica" debate...but I think the JUNGLE EXOTICA __is__ exotica,
regardless of the fact it ain't orchestral. It has as many primal screams
and wild animal calls and bonga-bonga beats as a record like EXOTIC
PERCUSSION AND BRILLIANT BRASS...but yes, it's more Screamin' Jay Hawkins
and Cramps than it is Les Baxter..true. Are the BACK FROM THE GRAVES boots
like the JUNGLE EXOTICAs are? Whaddabout the LAS VEGAS GRINDS(did Warren
do those too?)

why don't you put it up for auction to the exotica list first rather than the
dog-eat-dog free for all of ebay
or stop advertising it here like a carrot on a stick and stick to ebay?

Your point is taken, and I will stop posting such things (I've said in
previous postings that if anyone finds it unwanted, I'd stop). I must
point out to you however, that I'm far from the first or only person to
post eBay auctions on this list.
The 'dog-eat-dog free for all' you speak of happens to also contain some
very savvy and, dare I say it, good people. I've seen my share of
jerks, sure, but I've also 'met' many cool folks with whom I've enjoyed
correspondence. Think of it this way: you're having a yard sale. If
given the choice, would you set it up in your back yard, with a sign
pointing in, or in the front yard, where traffic can pass and see? The
eBay auction opens your goods up to, quite literally, the world. The
odds of actually (uh-oh, dirty words again) making money on what you
post are exponentially greater. I'd love love love to GIVE my vinyl
away to friends and acquaintences, but the fact is, my income is highly
unstable, and eBay affords me an opportunity to reach a wide and
interested marketplace.
The people who subscribe to this list are the most concentrated and
often most knowledgeable regarding music that inhabits the fringe of
'popular' tastes. If I've got items I feel might be of interest, why
not let them (you) know? Feels funny to write that, because a while
back I got embroiled in this same debate, but from your side. I had
just come from another list-digest that RUTHLESSLY hacked out any people
'hawking' anything. So I entered this list with those same guidelines,
and learned before long that this was a totally different kind of list,
and people (it seemed to me) enjoyed the 'advertising' of
exotica-related goodies.
I'd be interested to hear more feedback from others on the list about
this issue...both sides of the coin have valid points...anyone?

although there is definitely a self promoting element to announcing
relevant material placed in ebay, it is also a service to those of us
who are interested in possibly bidding on such material to place a
notice on the exotica list. after all, it is exotica...
as to putting it up for auction here first, that might be nice and
loyal, but it certainly won't assure the maximum number of potential
buyers. Also, a carrot on a stick compels the beast to work long and
hard with no reward... on ebay, you bid (and snipe), you may win!
ebay is wild, but it provides great stimulation and fantastic scores to
hundreds of thousands of folks with the same type of collectors
compulsion which drives many of us...

While the material on it was excellent, the sound quality and pressing
quality were appalling, which is a shame.
On the topic of Hell's Belles, I've been listening to it lots. It
really is amazing to think it was made by the same guy who composed
'ritual of the savage', 'jungle jazz' and 'que mango'... I never knew
Les Baxter could be funky...

* Eumir Deodato: "Samba Nova"
LP, ? EQ803, UK, 1999
I have this, and it is absolutely brilliant stuff. A really nice warm
sound, and excellent production, with just the right amount of
percussion. Deodato was very influenced by Mancini in his
arrangements, and you can hear that here...
As far as I can tell, this is one in a long series of reissues of
Deodato's 60s recordings, released by Blue Moon productions/Ubataqui
in Spain.
I only have two, both of which I love. The other is 'Impulso', which
is similar to 'Samba Nova', only with much more use of the hammond
organ.
Have been listening to these non-stop recently, along with the Astrud
Gilberto/Walter Wanderley 'a certain smile...' reissue, Marcos Valle's
'Samba 68' reissue, and that Tamba Trio 2cd compilation.
Also looking forward to my Japanese cd of Astrud's 'September 17,
1969', which I will pick up from the post office tonight...
In a brazilian mood, Jonny

B e l l y b o n g o M a n i f e s t=20
Bellybongo is Man
Bellybongo stands for forgotten values
Bellybongo wants to reclaim Man in Man
Bellybongo is a trademark of humanity
Lets get back into the swing of things.=20
Man
You are now Man. Man is huge. Man is flesh. Man is plant. Man is animal. =
Man is earth. Man is Nature.=20
Children
Children are true Man. We are all children, but society says we are not. =
If you dont agree, tell me when you stopped being child.
Women
Women treats bad. Most of all by themselfes. It is Bellybongos belief =
that Women carries the strength to take over after Mens constant =
failures. More Women than Men are true Man. Womens intuition is to be =
trusted. We belong together.=20
Mans trouble
Mans trouble begins when he rapes Nature. Before that he is as welcome =
as any animal or plant. Nature is forgiving. Stop your acts immediately =
and forgive Nature for what you have done. Nature is you.=20
Violence
It is absolutely forbidden to use violence against Nature in any form. =
Violence means deliberately damage. This is the most important thing to =
think of. If you find your inner self chaotic and strange, try another =
way of living. This is important because if you not are with ease with =
yourself, the world that is You changes in the direction you want, which =
are destruction. If you have felt this destructive anger, I recommend =
You to seek answers from the time before you were born. Bellybongo can =
fully understand Mans struggles. But what Bellybongo cant understand is =
violence. By hurting others you hurt yourself. And, your acts will =
automatically bring danger to Man. Not just for the victim of your rage, =
but to all.=20
Senses
The senses you have must swing with Nature. Nature is the greatest =
sense.=20
Animals
Bellybongo eats Animals. Man are allowed to do that. Dont eat to much =
Animals, just eat enough to keep you going. You should get yourself =
pictures of the animals you eat, as a symbol of their sacrifice for you. =
It is very important to love and vorship animals, because they are =
Nature.=20
Dogs
Dogs protect Man from bad dreams. Dogs are the shadow of the Sun. Dogs =
will leave Man when all bad dreams are gone.=20
Cats
Cats wants to play. They dream of You. Cats play you tricks constantly.=20
Fox
Man is either Cat or Dog. Seek comfort in Fox. Fox is both Cat and Dog.=20
Wolf
Wolfes are dogs who believes bad dreams are gone.=20
Cuckoo
Cuckoo is Bird who doesnt wants to be seen. Respect Cuckoos wish. If You =
see Cuckoo, Cuckoo gets sad.=20
The constant Now
Time doesnt exist. Its a constant Now. Man has succeded in recapture =
past Now through art. It is Mans most important contribution to Man =
after Man. By seing the past Now you see the evolution of the constant =
Now. By seing the evolution you see what has to be done in means of =
changing the evolution in another direction.=20
God
A Man is not true to himself, if he puts his fate in hands of something =
that doesnt exist. Believe in yourself, because within yourself =
everything exists. You are the only one who knows the true you. You will =
find company. Man are all different and you must love that.=20
Past Now
Man consists of everything Man has been since Mans first birth. Before =
the first birth Man was Bird.=20
Mans eyes.
Mans eyes are the map to the inner mind. You know this.=20
Dreams
When You close your eyes you come to Dreams. Dreams wants to tell you =
life is beautiful. When dreams are Bad, remember that they only reflect =
your life. You live with a belief that there are something bigger than =
you, the truth are you believe in God. But God is only an idea. Kill =
God, God is a bad idea.=20
Whistling
You can end bad dreams by whistle along with Nature. Nature likes that.=20
Contradiction
The Contradiction is the real truth. Your aim is to make the =
contradiction to contradiction truer. That is Mans greatest challenge. =
Man will succeed in this.=20
Music.
Something terrible has happened in the art of making music. Bellybongo =
can say that for certain, because music is the language of feeling and =
emotion, which are the main ingredients in Bellybongo. Bellybongo doesnt =
sense the smell of Man in music today. Digital is Alien. We cant let =
Digital keep deforming Man. The ways of making and recording music must =
get back to Analogue ways. Analogue is friend of Man. Digital is the =
most dangerous enemy we have had because Digital is not Nature. It is no =
need to fear Digital if Digital is used in copying man made art. Man =
made art will always carry true values, if the artist behind it is a =
true artist. Digital should be our slave.=20
Art
Artists now doesnt fully understand what the term Artist means. To be an =
artist means to be a creator. The artist himself means nothing, his work =
does. There are too many artists nowadays that doesnt believe in Man. =
They should either stop their acts, or start believe in Man, because =
creation without belief in Man is dangerous.=20
Death
Try to see to have pleasant dreams before entering death. This is =
Bellybongos advice. Suicide is not allowed because suicide doesnt =
change.=20
Dragonfly
In the Dragonfly lies the key to further enlightment. When Bellybongo =
dies, Bellybongo becomes Dragonfly.=20
Paradise
Bellybongo believes in Man. Man will succeed in regain Paradise.

Subject: (exotica) "Brazilica"
Have these been mentioned here before?
In 1997 Mercury/Talking Loud have put out compilations of Brazilian
music, called "Brazilica" (compiled by Gilles Peterson and Joe Davis). I
have here the "Brazilica 2" and what I like about it, is the selection.
Well known names mix with not so common ones, we have Gal Costa,
Gilberto Gil and Sergio Mendes, but who is MPB 4? However, the selection
concentrates on not so chique, not so loungy material, but the more
spiritual, hypnotic aspects of the Brazilian music. The multi-vocalistic
version of "Aqua de beber" by Quarteto Em Cy / Tamba Trio is just too
beautiful. Mmmmm... warmest recommendation! Would like to know if there
are more volumes of "Brazilica"....
