This is on the Buffalo Bop compilation _Horror Hop_ (highly recommended -
also has "Vampira" by Bobby Bare and the stunningly great "At the House of
Frankenstein" by Big Bee Kornegay).  Kip was in Kip & the Flips, a legendary
L.A. band on the cusp of the fifties rockabilly and sixties scenes.  As I
recall, several members of the Flips later went on to become well known
session players in L.A.

Subject: (exotica) RE: Beck at the Tropicana

Thought this might be of interest to fellow lounge enthusiasts.  I just flew
out to Las Vegas this weekend to see Beck in concert at the Tropicana Hotel.
While I'm no officianado on Vegas and this was my first trip, I think I like
the old Las Vegas you see in Ratt Pack movies like "Ocean's Eleven" rather
than the one you see now with these billion dollar hotels that look more
like theme park rides (The New York, New York actually has a roller
coaster!).  There was not much evidence of swinging... the big shows on the
bill boards were Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, and HUEY LEWIS AND THE
NEWS.  ACK.

Luckily, Beck was swinging, and he did play his bigger lounge-influenced
hits Tropicali and Deadweight in addition to mostly songs from Odelay and a
few from Mutations and Mellow Gold.

Opening for him was Tenacious D.  They don't really swing, but anyone who
likes their music and or comedy off the beaten path would probably be
interested in these guys. I think their web page is www.sidehatch.com.

As I left the show at about 12:00 or so, I saw that Sal Butera was playing
in a little lounge area.  It sounded a litle lackluster, but the guy is
pretty up there in years and I'm sure the guys in his band are too.  Sounded
pretty good though, but they were taking a break at about that time.

Overall, Vegas is a pretty tacky, evil place.  But, the trip was a lot of
fun and the concert was great..

it again in these days of microchips and no moving parts!

Children's author and songwriter Shel Silverstein dies
May 10, 1999

KEY WEST, Florida (AP) -- Shel Silverstein, the author of such acclaimed
children's books as "A Light in the Attic" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends,"
was found dead at his home early Monday. He was 66.

Two cleaning women discovered Silverstein in his bedroom. The cause of death
was not immediately known.

"There's no evidence of weapons or drugs," police spokeswoman Cynthia
Edwards said.

Silverstein was born in Chicago and began his career as a writer and
cartoonist for Playboy in 1952. He later served in the U.S. military in
Japan and Korea, where he was a cartoonist for the Pacific Stars and Stripes.

Silverstein was known for his folk songs and his children's verse.

His books include "The Giving Tree" (1964), "Falling Up" (1981) "Where the
Sidewalk Ends" (1981) "A Light in the Attic" (1981) "The Missing Piece"
(1982), and "The Missing Piece Meets the Big O" (1982).

Pea,

I few months ago I saw about 8 official reel to reel tapes for sale in a
used place in Boston. All were going for about $25.

The one's I remember:
Julie London, On the Rocks
Martin Denny, Quiet Village
Thelonius Monk, a Columbia album. Maybe Monk's Dream
Miles Davis, maybe Kind Of Blue

First time I ever noticed reel to reel for anything besides classical
titles. Mostly opera.

BTW, A reel to reel tape machine is for sale at a flea market near my home.
Brand: Pioneer? Asking price $250. Been there for a few months. Always
wanted one of these about 20 years ago. Now I ask myself: If I got it when
am I going to have time to listen to it?

Here is my latest musical obsession (not exactly Tiki fare, but
great and weird nonetheless)... John Kirby. I am a big fan of
Raymond Scott and I always thought he was a one-of-a-kind. But
I heard some John Kirby stuff that sounded just like him. He
seems to have shared a trumpet player with Scott (Charlie
Shavers), but I can't find out much about Kirby. Does anyone
know about him?

Hey, the release of ANY Three Suns is a cause for celebration.  And while
"Soft and Sweet" does suck pretty badly for the most part (damn strings!),
"Midnight For Two" is a great neglected gem.  There are some tracks there
that hold up with their best - Cumana and When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the
Tuba particularly rock.  The inclusion of pipe organ works, too.  I've got
mint copies of the lps but I'd probably buy the cd just for the halibut.
Really too bad Soft and Sweet had to be in there, though.

Stephen Frears is directing the film version of Nick Hornby's novel "High
Fidelity".  If you haven't read it, it takes place in a used record store
and I half-recommend it.
The novel took place in England somewhere.  The film is being shot in
Chicago as far as I know.  The lead is being played by John Cusack who's a
bit younger and hipper than I imagined the lead when I read the book but
still, Stephen Frears is pretty good news as director, if you ever had any
hopes for this book's film potential.

I'm pretty sure I've seen other Frederick Wiseman films on video somewhere.
Wait a second, now I'm not sure it is Wiseman.  Maybe it's Maysle Bros.
Nah, I'm going with my first impulse.  It's Wiseman.  (I really should know
this.)

I've seen the film a few times and I loved it but then again, one of the
things I loved about it was the way it evoked the period in which it was shot.

Damn, I'm having more second thoughts.  Maybe it isn't Wiseman or the Maysles.

I'm sure Cheryl or Will will correct me if I'm wrong.

But either way, suddenly I'm having flashbacks to that film.  Everytime I
see it, I thank G-d I never tried selling door to door.

                      *Shirley Dinsdale Layburn
    NEW YORK (AP) -- Shirley Dinsdale Layburn, a ventriloquist who won an Emmy
Award in 1949, the first year the awards were presented, died Sunday of
cancer. She was 72.
    Mrs. Layburn received her Emmy for Most Outstanding Television Personality.
    Her show appeared on Paramount Studio's KTLA in Los Angeles and featured
her and her puppet ``Judy Splinters.''
    She later had her own children's show on KNBH-NBC, followed by several
other shows on ABC in New York and Chicago.
    She later quit her television career and from 1973 to 1985 was the head of
the Respiratory Therapy Department of John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in
Port Jefferson, N.Y.
    Mrs. Layburn, who was born in San Francisco, began her ventriloquism career
at age 14 with her radio show, ``Judy in Wonderland.''
    She later moved to Hollywood, where she and her puppet had appearances on
radio shows along personalities such as Rudy Vallee, Eddie Cantor and Bob
Burns.
    Mrs. Layburn made her television debut in 1947 announcing shows and giving
children birthday greetings on KTLA. Her appearances led to the weekly
children's show, ``The Judy Splinters Show.''

                           *Maurice Scott
    CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) -- Maurice Scott, a trumpeter and band leader whose
namesake orchestra headlined concert halls for a half-century, died
Saturday. He was 86.
    The Maurice Scott Orchestra played in New York hotels and other landmark
venues in the region. For 20 years, Scott's band entertained summer visitors
at the Nemerson Resort in the Catskills. For another 15 years, the
orchestra's home was the Metropolitan Hotel in Asbury Park.
    The band's run lasted for more than 50 years, with Scott fronting the group
and contributing trumpet and vocals.
    Scott, whose real name was Maurice Anzaldi, also played with Tommy Dorsey,
Jackie Gleason and Sammy Davis, Jr.

                         *Gilbert Millstein
    NEW YORK (AP) -- Gilbert Millstein, who brought attention to Jack Kerouac
with a favorable review of the Beat Generation writer's novel ``On the
Road,'' died Friday of kidney failure. He was 83.
    Millstein's 1957 New York Times review of ``On the Road'' described the
novel as a beautifully executed work of art and helped propel Kerouac into
the public consciousness.
    Millstein wrote book reviews and articles for the Times from 1949 to 1963.
He also wrote for The Saturday Evening Post.
    He was the news editor of the ``NBC Nightly News'' from the mid-1970s to
the mid-1980s.

I just picked up the bootleg?/reissue of Gershon Kinglsey's Music to Moog
by. Very nice Moog LP, saturated with loads of echo and veering between
Hymanesque wierdness and Perreyesque cheesiness. Very nice to have it at
last though (without having to pay through the nose for it).

Correct, they are similarities. Scott's compositions are a bit 'wilder', but
Kirby is certainly worth checking out.

I may sound like a commercial from the 50's when I saw this but who cares.

I have these and think they are great.  I've used them as background music
for lighthearted public service announcements on the radio. (Call the Ferret
Friends of Massachusetts and adopt a ferret today!)

Most of the music reminds me of movie or drive-in trailers encouraging you
to visit the concession stand for some refressing snacks!

The sound quality, like all Scamp releases, is excellent.

I guess it was Don Byron with his Bug Music CD/Band who first made the
connection between Raymond Scott and John Kirby apparent to me. A month ago
I was at a show he put on for kids, called Toons & Tunes. He played a bunch
of Bug Music cuts, and played "spot the Raymond Scott melody" with the kids
by then showing a few WB cartoons. Great fun with a very open, appreciative
audience! Byron is fabulous with kids - if Mr. Rogers ever retires, Don
could easily fill those tennis shoes, and make the neighborhood a lot hipper
place to be as well.

Besides Byron's Bug Music Band, another Kirby tribute project is the Onyx
Club Sextet. Their promo reads: "The Onyx Club Sextet is a contemporary jazz
band that recreates the music and sounds of The John Kirby Sextet, which was
dubbed the 'best little big band from the 1940s' for their performances at
the famed Onyx Club. Under the leadership of bassist Wayne Roberts, this
sextet follows the famous 'Onyx Club Boys' tradition of performing swing
arrangements of classical pieces from composers like Beethoven, Schubert,
Dvorak, and Chopin."

I too can vouch for Kirby, a sadly underrated performer.  A wonderful place
to start is "Boss of the Bass", if you can find it (I have it) on Columbia
or "The Biggest Little Band in the Land' on ASV, which is still in print..
The Benny Goodman Sextet had many fine players, including Charlie Christian
and Teddy Wilson and Goodman himself, but I prefer Kirby for the precision
and unbelievable sense of swing, which of course includes fantastic
musicianship; "Jumping in the Pump Room" is just the tip of the iceberg of
the richness that is Kirby.  The only frustrating thing that can be derived
from the recordings is that the is almost no soloing on the bass by Kirby
himself, although according to musicians of the day, he was more than
capable of taking a solo spot.

For those who like their Classical music done Jazz style, this was a
specialty of the Kirby groups as illustrated by "Beethoven Riffs On", also
on "Biggest Little...".  Had he been the businessman that Goodman was,
perhaps there would have been more music of his to enjoy.

Has anyone on the list had or heard of experiences with the Hewlett Packard
CD-Writers?  Especially the 8110i?

Any information is helpful. On the same note, has anyone had any experience
with the currently available "stereo units" that duplicate CD's?  What brands

Pea and other Exotica Listers:

I know what you mean about reel-to-reel tapes.  If you can
find original tapes and keep your equipment running, it's
hard to beat.  I have a 1957 demo tape used by the Sonotape
Corporation at the New York City audio show containing
excerpts from their catalog of the day.  This was my
introduction to Ferrante and Teicher when I was a little
kid.  The stereo version of "Soundproof" was also released
as "Latin-American Adventure" on a 2-track stereo Sonotape
(a subsidiary of Westminster Records).  The sound quality is
excellent!

Subject: (exotica) 70s cop shows revisited

A few weeks back someone was asking about 70's cop shows.  I came across
a series of LPs called Funky Soundtracks while doing the rounds
yesterday (a day off work, doing the child care thing).  Vol 1 was
mentioned last week (Asteroids/Pearl and Dean theme),  the other volumes
have the sweeney theme and I think I saw Ironside and Starsky and Hutch
on there too.  At this point the baby woke up and started
complaining....Not another record shop dad,  nooooooo.. waaaaaaaahh.....
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

I've heard volume 1 and its not too bad,  weighted towards what the
Break Beat Boys would like (eg Hot Slow Wind from Hells Belles OST for
the drums)  but some good stuff all the same.

I would imagine that they are British releases due to the fact that
Asteroids is there.  I'll try to find out more on labels and stuff,  but
I won't get down to the shops until probably next week.  Perhaps someone
else knows the details.

This is old news for folks on the list since 1997...

Just got the Crime Jazz comps and they are incredible!

Notice some of people involved with putting this together. Many of them are
still contributors to the Exotica Mailing List.

My daughter, who recently turned 3, has an interesting comment about the
Prison Break intro on Volume 2: "Sounds like a yucky guy's hand with claws".
Even kids with a few years of television viewing have got the dramatic
imagery of this music down pat.


Corrupting a whole new generation.... :^)

I have a HP 7200i and I'm very happy with it. The only problem I had, was that
the software that comes with it had some sort of bug. Fortunately there's lots of
good software to be downloaded for free.
