I got this record...
(This store at the corner is getting rid of tons of stuff for a quarter.
That's why I bought the Bobby Goldsboro record)
Rita Pavone. I bought it partly because the name seemed slightly familiar
- - like one of those names that pops up here - but mostly because it looked
like the right era. Even though it's on RCA, at first I thought all the
liner notes were in Italian but I was wrong. It seems it's her first
record, from 1963
You know that fine line separating inspired kitsch from annoying crap?
This keeps just falling over on both sides.
I have a copy of this European"girly go-go ya-ya" tape that Moritz made for
Brian and Cheryl. She must be on that.
Two songs in particular would fit right into that narrow little groove.
"Clementine Cherie" and "Sul Cuccuzolo".
Tell me they're "ya-ya" classics.
And if this is somebody's holy grail, if they need it more than I do, I'd
gladly trade it.

I found an LP with Russ Garcia while on vacation in Goteborg. Its called =
"I'll never forget whats her name". Its a good jazz LP from 1978 on =
Bethlehem. Its good to see he got the chance in the 70s too. I dont =
listen much to this kind of jazz, but i enjoy this one. Lots of =
trombones.
Also found a Leonard Nimoy LP called "the touch of Leonard Nimoy". This =
one is really great. Contains among other nice tracks a splendid version =
of "Nature Boy". the title is correct, if you listen you'll get touched =
by Mr Nimoy. Highly recommended.
by mistake I crashed my Yma Sumac 78 with Birds and Najalas Lament =
earlier this year. I will never forgive myself... Luckily I found the LP =
Flahooley for $10. That was cheap so now at least I have those tracks =
again. The rest of the LP seems quite uninterresting, except for one =
more Yma Sumac track.
British dancebands from the 30s and 40s... Its a passion. My ex =
girlfriend was so delighted to hear me play old 78s for her she stayed =
with me for 4 years. In Goteborg I found a good LP collection from 1978 =
with songs picked only from Disney movies. "Great songs from Disney =
movies". At last I got the tracks "Whos afraid of the big bad wolf" and =
"Heigh-Ho".=20
I also got a chance to DJ a club called VS. I mixed Comstock and Marino =
with calypso and exotica. Few people there. Nobody except my friends =
seem to like it that much, Ahh! they dont know what they are missing. =
This will hopefully change this summer when Goteborg goes exotica. two =
clubs are about to start, one will be a copy of Stefan Kerys "Tiki =
Room".=20
Anybody interested in Comstock and Marino on CDr, please contact me off =
list.

I think someone already posted a message listing the
upcoming Mrs. Miller, Bobby Darin and Louis Prima
Ultra-Lounge spinoffs but I thought I would post scans
from the June 8 EMI New Release catalogue anyway.
Also of interest in the book is the Electro-Lounge
compilation on EMI's Right Stuff label. Tracks by
Martin Denny, Yma Sumac (!), Dean Elliot and others
remixed by "...the hottest new re-mixers in the dance
scene today." A "techno-pairing" of Dean Martin and
Julie London for the song Sway? Hmm...
Check out the scans of both at

Subject: (exotica) U-L Tiki Sampler
I received an advance CD of the Ultra-Lounge Tiki Sampler, and I must say
I've enjoyed it very much. Of course, the "Tiki" refers to the packaging, not
necessarily the disc's contents. (After all, who among us was disappointed to
find zero leopard songs on the last sampler?)
Aside from the selections from the last six volumes, the "On the Rocks" discs
and the Baxter/Gleason/Denny collections, there are six bonus tracks that
haven't appeared on any U-L comp before and two hidden tracks.
The first hidden track is another one from the Continental ladies' man who
has shown up on several of the most recent volumes. But the second hidden
track is a cool bongo lesson from an old "how-to" record, and it lasts for
several minutes.
All in all, a very worthy purchase and a welcome sign that the U-L is once
again alive and well.

I haven't yet read the Peter Thomas yet but the "A Certain Frank"
article is well worth reading. Written by Biba Kopf, my favourite
reviewer from this magazine, I share his sentiments about this great
label that never found as wide a fan base as it deserved.
Too bad, however, there was no mention made of the latest release on
AtaTak; The Bad Examples - "Electro Tiki". This is the third release
by this band and in my opinion the best! Imagine the combination of
Tiki influenced - easy - electronics if you can. Highly recommended
to all list members. Cover art is another Moritz R masterpiece! I
assume it's viewable on the AtaTak website and maybe even with a
sound clip. Look up:
We'll be featuring another track from it on tomorrow's (as in Sunday
May 2nd edition) of Space Bop between 4:0pm to 5:00 pm (eastern
time). Catch it on realaudio at:
I think Forced Exposure distributes this label in North America as it
isn't that easy to find. Any store worth shopping at should be able to
track it down. I think you can order direct from AtaTak if all else
fails!

You guys talk about Disney so much that I finally bought one. It's called
something like "Goofy's Dance Record" and covers all the dance styles like
mambo, cha cha etc and it's pretty good.
When I read this post, it occurs to me that there are people on this list
that would like lots of the Disney records I pass up on an almost daily
basis. The other day there was this one something like "Around the World".
I didn't buy it mostly because there were no individual cuts on it on
either side.
Anyway if anyone - maybe in Europe? - has a Disney want list, especially if
it's a record involving Disney cartoon characters, you could post it here
or privately and I I'll try and put it on my mental list.
Trouble is once something goes on my mental list, I usually never see it
again.
But other people on the list must stumble upon these things as often as I do.
If you do, check out Goofy doing the cha cha.

HAZELWOOD, LEE: Cowboy In Sweden CD (SLR 030). Smells Like's series of
long-awaited, hotly anticipated Lee Hazelwood reissues kicks off with the
release of this 1970 album. Recorded in his prime, Cowboy is a singular

NEW ORLEANS, May 1 (UPI) -- New Orleans Archbishop Philip Hannan celebrated
a public funeral mass for musician and entertainer Al Hirt, who died Tuesday
of liver failure at the age of 76.
Hirt will also be remembered Sunday with a special parade at the conclusion
of the 30th annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Friends and fans from around the world attended the funeral and are
expected to take part in the parade.
Flags are at half-staff in New Orleans today, and Mayor Marc Morial ordered
them to remain at half-staff through Sunday in honor of the legendary
trumpet player's contributions to the culture, legacy and tourism of New
Orleans.
Morial said a committee will be appointed to create a permanent Memorial to
Hirt in the city.
Hirt's career included 21 Grammy nominations, and he won a Grammy in 1964
for the hit ``Java.'' He was a star on Bourbon Street, entertaining visitors
for decades.
Hirt performed for six presidents, at the inauguration of President John F.
Kennedy, and during a visit by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
His accomplishments included recording 55 albums, many of which went gold
and platinum, and a rendition of ``Flight of the Bumblebee'' that became the
theme song for television's Green Hornet. He had his own CBS television
variety show in the late 1960s.
Hirt continued performing at on Bourbon Street at the Chris Owens Club
until he was hospitalized last month.

known for his antics off screen as he was for his performances on screen,
died Sunday in Malta. He was 61.
Reed, who played the fearsome Bill Sikes in the 1968 musical ``Oliver!'',
died on the way to a hospital after taking ill while drinking with friends
in a bar in the Maltese capital, Valetta, police said. The cause of death
was not immediately disclosed.
Reed was on the Mediterranean island filming a new movie, ``The Gladiator.''
His 53 films include ``Women in Love,'' ``The Devils,'' and ``Tommy,'' all
directed by the eccentric Englishman Ken Russell.
Unlike some stars who need elaborate explication of their roles, Reed was
content, Russell said, to create his own shorthand as a way of understanding
his character: ``moody one, moody two, or moody three ... depending on the
intensity of the smoldering meanness required.''
But Reed was often better-known for misdeeds away from the camera and
well-publicized drinking bouts.
LONDON, May 3 (UPI) -- Oliver Reed, an actor whose ``character you love to
hate'' roles were often echoed in his off-screen life, has died. He was 61.
Police say Reed became ill Sunday while drinking with friends on Malta and
died en route to a hospital. While an autopsy will be performed, authorities
say they have no reason to suspect anything but a natural death. Perhaps
Reed's most known roles were at Bill Sikes in ``Oliver!'' and as the
stepfather in ``Tommy.''
Reed was in Malta working on ``The Gladiator'' when he died. In what would
have been his 100th film or television role, Reed was appearing in "The
Gladiator," a movie directed by Ridley Scott and produced by Steven
Spielberg. He was playing Proximo, a gladiator trainer. He is credited with
appearances in more than 53 films, including several directed by Ken
Russell. The films he made with Russell, such as ``Tommy,'' Women in Love,``
and ''The Devils`` -- mark some of Reed's most memorable roles.
Playing the sullen Bill Sikes in the musical ``Oliver!'' was another high
point and was typical of the brooding character Reed so often portrayed.
But the hard-living actor was also well known for his lifestyle. He once
said: ``I like the effect drink has on me. What's the point of staying
sober?'' As if to support that he once arrived at the Galway, Ireland,
airport lying drunk on the barrage conveyor. He was ordered out of a Madrid,
Spain, hotel after jumping nude into a large fish tank.
Reed was born Feb. 13, 1938, in Wimbledon. While untrained as an actor,
Reed was cast as Richard I on a children's serial on the BBC. He was married
twice and his current wife, Josephine, is among his survivors. He also had
two children.

*Roderick Thorp
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) -- Roderick Thorp, a master of suspense fiction whose
best-selling novels ``Die Hard'' and ``The Detective'' became popular
movies, died Wednesday of a heart attack. He was 62.
Thorp's career spanned more than three decades. Born in New York City on
Sept. 1, 1936, he won prizes for short-story writing while attending City
College of New York but was unable to find success as an author after
graduation.
Instead, he went to work in his father's private detective business. Over
nine years, he gathered knowledge that stood him in good stead in his
writing career.
Success as an author came with his 1966 book ``The Detective.'' It sold
millions of copies worldwide and was turned into a movie starring Frank
Sinatra and Lee Remick.
He taught literature at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., then moved to Los
Angeles in 1976.
His 1979 detective novel ``Nothing Lasts Forever'' was renamed ``Die Hard''
in its second edition, which later became a 1988 hit movie starring Bruce
Willis.
One of his later books was 1995's well-reviewed ``River: A Novel of the
Green River Killings.'' It was a fictionalized account of an unsolved series
of murders that occurred in the 1980s in the Pacific Northwest.

FIRST GLANCE OF THE WEEK:
'ELECTRO LOUNGE' is the straightforward title to an upcoming compilation of
fairly impressive electronic types taking a spin through their parents' --
perhaps their grandparents' -- record collections. Tranquility Bass turns in
one of very few weak takes, but who these days could be expected to do
anything to improve upon Louie Prima's ubiquitous "Jump Jive an' Wail"?
Elsewhere on the record, subtitled "Electronic Excursions in Hi-Fidelity,"
Gearwhore does the James Bond theme, Meat Beat Manifesto tweaks Elmer
Bernstein, the Rip-off Artist spoofs a Dean Martin-Julie London
smooch-a-thon and Uberzone gets the opportunity to re-exoticize Martin
Denny. Other contributors include u-ziq (Dean Elliott), Gus Gus (Leroy
Holmes), Luke (aka Wagon Christ aka Plug) Vivert (April Stevens) and Eat
Static (John Buzon Trio.) Q-Burns Abstract Message revitalizes Yma Sumac,
and Omni Trio scores John Barry. Sixteen tracks in all -- out 6/8 from The
Right Stuff record label. (Beech)
SOUND FILE OF THE WEEK:
The stylish folks at Volkswagen haven't yet managed to put together a CD of
all the wise song choices that enliven their commercials, but they have made
one of the finest among them available for free at their web site. The page
at http://www3.vw.com/vwworld/music.htm houses a list of many of the latest
VW commercials, including music by Charles Mingus, Stereolab and
Spiritualized. But the real reason to check out this site is the opportunity
to download a one-minute MP3, WAV or AIF file of "Jung at Heart," the
backing music to the much talked about JETTA commercial in which a pair of
New Orleans tourists discover an entire street life attuned to the pulse of
their car's tape deck. The song is attributed to MASTER CYLINDER. Also
available here: Hector Varela's "Palomita Blanca," from the Passat
commercial in which two parents flirt from matching black cars. (Weidenbaum)

Ouch, we are painfully slow. Here's an open question I posted on here a
couple of years ago. It got a good response then... and led to some
interesting threads. I think we've got enough new blood to make another
round worthwhile.
What are your earliest memories of records and record playing? And can you
remember your first favorite record?

I agree.
And the disk has lots of vocals. Especially the ladies. A couple of Burt
tunes. Love the novelty tune I Dig Chicks by Jonah Jones.
The only thing I don't like is the busy trumpet/ xylophone opening of track
1. The Munsters Theme by Jack Marshall. It may be a little too much for the
uninitiated. You only get one chance to make a 1st impression.

Subject: (exotica) A Happy Exotica Building Story
Distressing as it is to hear of Temples of Exotica torn down throughout the
woild, in the Imperial city of Saugus, MA...they still honour such palaces.
While not a "tiki" restaurant per se, Weylu's, an Oriental restaurant
complex, is a gorgeous, ornate structure - the architectural equivalent of
Les Baxter's PORTS OF PLEASURE or of a Tak Shindo record. The funny thing
is:
Weylu's owes a huge amount of back taxes, and the City of Saugus has
threatened to
forclose on them. Saugus gave pause, though, and asked the musical
question: "What are we gonna do
with a huge building shaped like the imperial city?"

PS...I can't remember the exact first record I played...but I have two
goofy little kid stories:
1. First record ever learned all the words to: "Love Story"
2. I had a crush on Jimeny Cricket(sp?)...He was my first love! I broke
open my Pinochio record to see if he was inside! :(

Earliest memories of records . . .
In the late 1950s, we lived in Northern Manitoba, in a Native
community, and had no television. Once a week, someone set up
a 16mm projector in an old schoolhouse and showed movies.
My earliest movie memory is of a long, long pirate swashbuckler
that astounded me but wore me out . . . years later, I looked up
Ghost of the China Seas in Leonard Maltin and found out it was about
78 minutes in length, a cheap film shot mostly in a bathtub.
But we had a record player, and I remember a Burl Ives record
being played over and over again. "A little green frog swimming
in the water, a little green frog doin' what he oughter .. . " or something
like that. Eventually, we moved down south and my father, a trumpeter,
jumped aboard the Tijuana Brass craze.

Speaking of cartoon music (which several folks were doing last week):
Nickelodeon debuted a new cartoon called Spongebob Squarepants. You can get

While the cartoon itself seemed fairly brainless, it does feature
tiki-inspired graphics and music supplied (in part) by the Blue Hawiians (

* - In case anyone's wondering why I played The Lord's Prayer, well
it was because we're on immediately after "The Heavenly Gospel
Hour"!!! And on a humorous note, the "Reverend Francis Xavier"
who hosts the gospel show hung around for the first part of our
show and when I said "continuing the theme of Good News here's
The Lord's Prayer..." he apparently said to my posse members
"don't mock the Lord, he will be revenged..." So, we're thinking of
recording our own gospel song called "Don't Mock the Lord" for
next week's show.
Tune in next Sunday 1000-1200 105.4 FM stereo for more fun,
frolics and battles between Good and Evil...
