Subject: (exotica) Peter Thomas Scat Singer

Does anyone know who sings the Shub-a-dooe scat on the song by the same name
that appears on the Peter Thomas, Raumpatrouille album.
I assume it's the same person who sings on the Brooklyn By Night track off
the Thomas 100% Cotton album.

If anyone hasn't heard the tracks, or you want to refresh your memory
I posted them in 32kbit/22khz mp3 format at:

This is all I could find on Brad's Space Age Pop Page:

Astro Sounds from the Year 2000, 101 Strings (Alshire)
Not a violin within a mile of this dense, funky collection of all-electronic
music.

I have a CD from Request Records that pairs the album with Yma Sumac's
Miracles album. No linear notes at all....

Any more info on the net? Any idea what year they were recorded? There was
talk about Astro Sounds on the list a few weeks ago.

I found it on my last CD hunting trip through the Boston stores.

Lent it to my Led Zep buddy who found it to be a total rip off.

Track 7 sounded familiar and he identified the melody as Give Me Some Lovin'
by Traffic.

It's not that the music itself is disdainful, it's that some people - not
me - are offended by the idea that just about any music, within reason, can
work behind just about any film.
I shouldn't speak for them whoever they are.
At this very moment, I'm putting together "a temp music" track for my film.
 Music that you temporarily use under the film so that you can show it to
people until you actually have your real soundtrack.  It also can help you
figure out what kind of music you want.  Of course, almost every single
film composer in the world, even if they've never done it before, hates it
when you ask them to "imitate" something on your temp music track.
Maybe this film isn't a good example because of its subject matter - which
I will tell you all about as soon as I know it's actually going to be
finished - but right now I have pieces ranging from Eddie Osborne's organ
and bongo version of "El Cumbachero", Curtis Mayfield, John Martyn, Cugat,
Tipsy and the Three Suns doing "Third Man theme"... and it kind of works.
My previous film the temp track was almost all Astor Piazzola and it worked.

What was my point again?

Oh yeah, just about any music, even the stockest of stock music, will
fulfill the role that music plays in a film.

For most films.

Of course, there are many exceptions and for the purpose of this list, I am
excepting every film that someone on this list finds unimaginable without
the soundtrack it ended up with.

I can personally recommend Moondog on CBS from 1969, although I would pass
on Moondog 2, which is choral in content, but not as interesting.  My
father used to see Hardin standing outside of his house in full Viking garb
when he was on his way to work.

My brother and I had a devil of a time finding the album, but we got it!
It's orchestral and even features a song dedicated to Charlie Parker.
Incidentally, he was recently interviewed on NPR, having just performed in
the UK.  Not only has age not slowed him down much but he kept time on a
drum for one song and wore some of the younger musicians out!

Pat Irwin used to do the music for Rocko's Modern Life; I think he also
does Pepper Ann. When I did an article on cartoon music for the Village
Voice last year, Pat made me a compilation of various cues and pieces
from Rocko, all very much in a Raymond Scott/surf vein. A shame nobody's
putting that stuff out.

Small World Dept.: Prudence Fenton is a very good friend of Allee Willis,
who wrote the lyrics to the theme from Friends and also discovered the
Del Rubio Triplets. Willis is a genuine eccentric who lives in an old MGM
"party house" in Hollywood. She collects atomic age retro-trinkets and
her house is supposed to be unbelievable.

If you've got the Real Audio stream saved to your hard disk you can use
a program called Ra2Wav to convert it to a Windows WAV file (I assume
you're using Windows).  Your CD recording software should then be able
to convert the WAV file to Red Book CD audio so that you can play the
disc on a regular audio CD player.

just reading the new edition of the wire at dinner and it has interviews
with peter thomas, a certain frank (ex der plan, with moritz mentioned) and
a very positive review of tam tam's issue of 'yevgenie sokolov' if you are
neither a mouldy fig nor an upright intellectual you'll probably dig this
funny, smutty book. if you are either... you need it'. there is also a
review of david toop's book 'exotica: fabricated soundscapes in a real
worl'. does anyone have any opinions on it?

Funny you should mention this... In a recent late-night "baking" session =
with an old pal we wondered what the advantages were for has-been =
Rascals. Is there a tour-circuit? What's the draw for all these =
imposters? Are they getting the best tables in the finest restaurants?=20

Maybe I should look into this... I'm only 32, but I can do the Froggy =
voice.. All I need is the glasses.

I was reading this blurb about Roy Budd who was described as "The British
Lalo Schifrin" (a moniker equivalent to God in my religion).

Does anyone concur with this title?

There is an import CD out called 'Rebirth of the Budd' which is supposedly a
comprehensive anthology of his work.

Budd was also responsible for soundtracks Get Carter and Fear is the Key
which are both available on CD currently.  Can anyone recommend any of these?

                            *Garwood Van
    LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Garwood Van, a longtime bandleader who was the musical
director for several Las Vegas acts including Ronald Reagan, died Sunday. He
was 88.
    Van gave comedian Redd Foxx his first job in Las Vegas and opened the
city's first rock 'n' roll club. Van signed Foxx in 1964 as an opening act
for Dinah Washington.
    He was established as a ``society bandleader,'' playing mostly ballroom
dances, when he took a job at the old El Rancho Vegas in June 1942. He
remained to become one of Las Vegas' best-known musical figures.
    As leader of the house band at The Last Frontier, he was the bandleader for
Ronald Reagan when the future president headlined the hotel showroom in
February 1954.

Melba Liston, 73, Trombonist and Prominent Jazz Arranger

Melba Liston, a trombonist and arranger who worked with some of the best
bands in jazz, died April 23 after a series of strokes, said a friend,
pianist Randy Weston. She was 73 and lived in Los Angeles.

Ms. Liston is best known for her collaborations with Weston, including the
ambitious African-influenced works "High Life" and "Uhuru Afrika" from the
early 1960s. On those albums she created dense harmonies to place over the
percussion that Weston was using. She made his pieces, often harmonically
simple, thick with dissonances and meaning.

Ms. Liston stopped playing in 1985 after a stroke left her partially
paralyzed, but she continued to arrange music with Weston. Their
collaboration continued into the 1990s, and included work on Weston's
"Spirits of Our Ancestors" (1992) and "Volcano Blues" (1993).

Ms. Liston came to prominence in jazz in 1943, when she joined
arranger-composer Gerald Wilson's band in Los Angeles. She recorded with the
tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon in 1947 (he dedicated the tune "Mischievous
Lady" to her) and a year later she began working with Dizzy Gillespie and
his orchestra. In 1957 she took what might be her most famous improvisation
on record, on Gillespie's "Cool Breeze," from "Dizzy Gillespie at Newport."

A few years earlier she had dropped out of music, working in clerical jobs
and as a film extra. She had small parts in "The Prodigal"and "The 10
Commandments."

When she returned to music she worked with Gillespie and with Quincy Jones,
who was the music director of the television show "Free and Easy." In the
1960s she worked with Weston, and during the 1970s she taught in Jamaica at
the University of the West Indies and the Jamaica Institute of Music. She
returned to the United States in the early 1980s.

Her later work for Weston is as dramatic as her early pieces, and on
"Volcano Blues" she produces some shocking orchestral colors. At one of
Weston's concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music last year, her presence
brought the audience to its feet.

She leaves no immediate survivors.

Announcing the arrival (May 18) of the new record (CD) by Seks Bomba, a

Panther" and a surefire dancefloor packer), "The Cat" (Lalo's goodie), and
several originals, including instrumentals "Rum Holiday", "Theme From "To
Kill '89", and "Operation B.O.M.B.A.") This one's a killer and I believe

I have the Sound Spectrum comp CD that has 4 Budd tracks. All from Get
Carter.

1) Get Carter, (starts off sort of new age and goes into slightly funky NOW
sound territory).

2) Love is a Four Letter Work (kind of 60's rock NOW sound w/vocal),

3) Gettin' Nowhere in a Hurry, (similar to 2 w/ more vocal reverb)

4) Plaything. (Instrumental, slightly funky organ/keyboard). The melody a
cross between 1 and 2. Ends with the intro of track 1.

I never heard any Schifrin that sounds like Budd.

Huh?!? There's strings all over, along with guitars, bass, drums, non-synth

If you like it, I'd recommend that you get Scamp's legit reissue, which
includes new liner notes and spicy bonus tracks from "The Exotic Sounds Of
Love" (correct? wrong?).

The background of the rock combo backing tracks has been covered here in
the past, but I can't recall the details exactly. Originally appeared on a
"budget rock" album called Electric Egg? Or something like that?

Of what I have heard, no.  Moondog's music is melodic and never atonal,
there is no improvisation and more overtly influenced by "classic" genres.
Sun Ra's started melodic and got increasingly dissonant and was almost
always Jazz or Blues based.  I am a fan of both, so please do not take my
remarks as denigrating either.

Well, I haven't heard this yet...but I can vouch for the B man in saying
that Seks Bomba is America's best kept secret #1 group!  The singer, Chris,
has just one of these once in a lifetime voices...almost makin' ol Tom
Jones sound like he could be WEARING those panties flung at him. The group
is tight-now-sound, great Hammond Organ, flute, groovin geetars, innovative
rhythm section....Fans of spy, surf, and the loungey-talents of folks like
Combustible Edison, Oranj Symphonette and Joey Altruda(TALK ABOUT
UNDERRATED...) will surely love Seks Bomba!

Get Carter - Legendary =A31500 LP that must be had, now reissued and
available. Very moody, dark and intellegent. A massive classic!

Diamonds - A one trick pony but a top quality and very rare LP now reis=
sued
and available. High speed bass-driven jazz with plenty of breaks and hi=
gh
drama. A massive classic too.

Fear is the Key - Legendary jazz soundtrack by some legendary jazz
performers including Tubby Hayes. Very cool but also very jazzy, featur=
ing
a 10 minute piece, Car Chase with sirens, engine sounds etc. Top!

Roy Budd Plays Great Songs and Themes - This is a 1970s Roy Budd
compliation which the Sound Spectrum took tracks from for its compilati=
on
(and until 1990s reissue fever, this was the only place, other than the=

original 45,  you could get the Get Carter theme). The LP features trac=
ks
from Get Carter, Wild Geese, Soldier Blue and others. Pretty cool but o=
nly
really because of the Get Carter tracks.

Wild Geese - Average, mostly orchestral soundtrack

Paper Tiger - As above, but more boring

Soldier Blue - Never heard it but selected tracks are on the Plays Grea=
t
Songs and Themes LP - average orchestral.


I think thats it. Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.
