A couple of the best tracks were already featured on the "The sound

Budd" is good and tasteful piano cocktail jazz (nothing to get wiold about
though), the rest fits in the "Sound gallery" style.

Hey
The new Curd Duca CD/LP is out. Its called Elevator 2 availbale from Mille
Plateaux records. Second installment in his (hopefully) Elevator series. I
hope he continues to put out stuff as great as his Easy Listening 1-5
series. If you dont know who curd duca is, he's a sample cut-up artist who
samples all kinds of exotica/lounge/easy listening music and gives it a
futuristic atomic-lounge twist. Ambient at times, exotica-dreamy in others,
and sometimes downright creepy. I recommend anything and everything he has
put out.

Hippie Goddesses, V/A C&P Godddess Recordings (1999) boot?
Picked this up from http://othermusic.com for a reasonable price.
Its schlock psychodelic garage raunch guitar with risque lyrics and a rather ragged
sound. It appears to be late 60s/70s. Its Girls in the Garage styled cd, with less
garage and more psychedelica.
Theres no real credits on this cd, just first names of the artists. The vocals are a
cut above the Shaggs.
If anyone knows more about the origins of these songs I am curious......yellow

Suprisingly enough, my first memory of records was the "Living
Stereo" and "Phase Four" records that my father brought out to
impress all visitors to our house. When these were finished, he
would bring out the "Railroad Sounds" LP and then, we'd get sent
to bed so that he could put on Rusty Warren for the adults. (I have
to pick all these up when I visit him down east in June)
But myself...I had a "Hits of George Formby" record that I played to
death...until I got a copy of "Beatlemania".

I was somewhat disappointed by this collection. All I can tell you is that
the song "Come In My Mouth" is from an an original cast album of the
off-Broadway play "Let My People Come". (i'm not kidding -it would be hard to
make this stuff up). It's always been my favorite cut on the LP and has been
on several tapes.

I think I own everything of Tomita and I do NOT agree. A comparison with
Perrey & Kingsley wouldn't come to my mind: That's a totally different cup of
tea. Tomita was the one who stepped into the classic-interpreting footprints
of Walter Carlos. And he did it in a different unique, yet interesting way:
The sound worlds he created, were really new then and not heard before.
Especially the synthesizer sounds that sounded like voices were an exciting
new experience at that time. Every once in while I find myself putting on
headphones and listening to a couple of Tomita classics.

Not really. Moondog is pretty much unparalleled. The elements that distinguish him
the most from other artists we talk about in this list, are the influences of
"classical" music, i.e. modern classic. It reminds one of Steve Reich or Terry
Riley. In his early recordings there is still a heavy Exotic part. Yet everything
is performed with a sort of natural primitivism, that is hard to describe. The
entire personality incl. his "story" is so unique that any comparison cannot fully
catch what it's all about.
BTW: If you take a close look at the new album of the Merricks ("Escape from planet
Munich") you'll discover his name!

I was maybe five and played this Italian summer hit "Marina" b/w
"Manuela" by Rocco Granata for about a thousand times on the newly
discovered record player of my father. The instrumental accordion melody
of the A-Side as well as the lush Rumba-rythm of the B-side have been
burnt into my memory since then.

Laserlight probably just deleted the box set version but I am sure the single

pretty awful. So maybe the Grammys will give a special humnitarian award to

Picked up this 1993 Mercury France cd release of a 1983 Isabelle
Adjani S/T album.
This is all vocals. The music is too ernest for me. Nothing really
exotic, its early 80's synthesizer get up and boogie or soft ballads.
Some songs are whispered and on others she does sing quite well. Her
voice is interesting but the music is rather bland and the melodies
just don't hook.
Beautiful cover and packaging but I would prefer the vinyl full size
for a thrift store price.
If you want this cd it was available at Dusty Groove.

Subject: (exotica) She Had A Taste for Music/Italian Girl Like EAR-CATCHING Melodies
"She Had " Various Artists, Dagored (1999) This is music from
original Italian soundtrack recordings from generally the early '70's.
Its almost all gentle instrumental soundtrack meloies, with a couple
of oh so sexy spoken word songs.
Wonderful soft Bacharac influenced melodies that are perfect for the
wee wee hours or your first cup of coffee on an early breezy sunny
Sunday morning. Theres nothing funky or hard going on here, no
driving drum beats until the last couple of songs. The music floats
gently until the end of the cd and then you want to dance and then its
all soft again.
The cd cover says "Rare Gems from the Italian Erotic Archive" I
don't recognize these songs on other comps but most of the songs are
gems. My only complaint is the cd could be longer, but its well worth
the $11 dusty sells it for.
"Italian Girls Like" Also on Dagored (1999) More great Italian movie
themes from the late '60's early/mid '70's. The music is all over the
spectrum with rocking now sounds, soft melodies, nice late nite
jazzy instrumentals, dreamy vocal ballads, spy jazz, rock and
blacksploitation. Some of the songs are very short and the cd is
under 50 minutes. There's nothing grounbreaking on here but I like
most of the songs on this cd alot and can't believe how many cds the
Italian labels have put out over the last four years. The songs on
here do not compare with the best from Irma or Right Tempo but this is
another wonderful Italian soundrack compolation.

There was this song that came on top 40 radio, I believe it was by
the Crew Cuts, and is called "What Is Love"
I just remembered it for many many years by the words that went:
"Sways with a wiggle with a wiggle when she walks"
I remember having it explained to me that poni tails swing back and
forth when you walk.
25 years or so later I heard the Crew Cuts version of "What is love"
It sounded ALMOST exactly as I remembered it, but something was off.
I figured it was THE version and my memory of it had changed over the
decades.
I'm still not positively sure if this is the correct version.

Ok, don't laugh but my earliest memory and I guess
first favorite was Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer."
It was 1979 or '80 and my older sister had the 45 and
played it constantly. I suppose it prepared me for
Ferrante & Teicher.
Out of curiosity I did a search on the net and found
that Mills (aka Mr. Music Box Dancer) will be on his
farewell tour through Canada this year and next (the
orchestral pop lifestyle must be taking a toll). His
official site is at www.frankmills.com.

The poor maligned Nash Rambler finally got praised by those Playmates!
What a wonderful song and you can imagine all the confusion that
surrounded it when it first came out. All those gentleman from the
late 1950's taking off their hats to scratch their heads and wonder
how could a Nash Rambler in second gear be faster than the mighty
Cadillac. I wonder what they told their girl sitting next to them in
their 58 chevy?
Those playmates knew how fast a Nash Rambler really was! I can see
Tiki Bob scratching his head right now with Martin Denny playing in
the background just like its 1958.

How true. But it would be in my 1951 Buick with the Sonomatic radio (the
Wonderbar was the top of the line radio - it had a button on the floor board
you hit with your foot and the radio would automatically seek the next
station). Also, the vibrator would be humming right along with the music.
What you say???
Oh, for the uninitiated: the vibrator was a device in car radios before
solid state that turned DC to AC so the vacuum tubes would work better. My
vibrator went out about 2 years ago and the "new" vibrators are solid state
and don't hum. Being the nostalgic fool I am, I searched high and low until
I found a new old stock vibrator that hums.
And my favorite 1951 hit??? It's a tie between Yma Sumac's Wemoweh and The
Domino's Sixty Minute Man.
When better automobiles are built -- Buick will build them! (And I don't
care how fast that Rambler goes.)

Subject: (exotica) Azure by Louis Philippe
http://www.dustygroove.com has done the world a favor and brought the
great Louis Philippe for sale rather reasonably.
They are selling "Azure", a Japanese import on Trattoria (1999)
This is another wonderful soft pop Louis Phillipe album. But on this
one he teams up with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra to make a very
wonderful gentle pop record. His soft vocal style is backed by the
orchestra in a very tasteful manner, nothing is upfront or
overpowering, but the melodies. This is a very well produce record.
After a few listens this release is simply another marvelous L
Philippe record, much like his previous releases. Jackie Girl was a
little more haunting, but this is a great album. Out of the four or
five releases I have this is almost his best yet.The music is very
very slow balads sung by him in a very meloncholy longing style.
With the orchestra accompaniment this is a beautiful listening
experience.
http://othermusic.com generally carrys most of his other albums.

Subject: (exotica) persistence of memory
>What are your earliest memories of records and record playing? And can you
>remember your first favorite record?
1. To the subject line, I say, Hello Dali.
2. Sorry.
The first memories that I have pertaining to the question are the
Electrophonic record player in my brother's room. It was beige and had a
picture of a conductor holding a baton on a podium.
My parents had a collection of 45's which my brother and I used to plow
through, such as:
Why Do Fools Fall in Love? - Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers
The Minotaur - Dick Hyman and his Electric Eclectics
Le Chien (El Perro) - Eduardo Davidson(some name, eh?)
Don't Pat Me On My Back and Call Me Your Brother - Kasandra (that's a man,
folks!)
My mother and father had very eclectic tastes. My mother bought Lady
Madonna (trivia break! This was written for Fats Domino by the Beatles
which explains the odd timbre of McCartney's voice on the record. Domino
recorded it later) for the flipside, "The Inner Light" my first sitar
instrumental.
One day, my Father, a notorious, um...thrifty fellow, to hear my Mother
tell it, bought a new stereo for the living room. It had a Fisher
(pre-Sears) receiver, Garrard turntable, and Acoustic Research speakers
that weighed a ton, to me.
So what was the record I recall listening to on it? A mono 78 of
Cinderella. This version was so short, that it actually ended at her going
to the ball. Last year, I found out about the glass slipper thing, thank
you Internet (just kidding). I also heard a record of Hans Christian
Anderson's "Little Match Girl". "Here now, you little brat! Take these
matches and don't come back until you've sold every one of them or you
won't get any supper!". With echo, that is pretty scary to a seven year-old.
So there I was, selling my matches to pay for the stere...I mean, one day,
we dredged up the 78's from the basement. We made a tape of them and some
I can remember were:
Thermopylae - Stan Kenton (my brother's favorite)
Love for Sale - Stan Kenton (my favorite)
Otto, Make That Riff Staccato - Duke Ellington
Tell Me a Story - Jimmy Boyd
That was a good one:
"Tell me a story, tell me a story,
Remember what you said.
Tell me about the birds and bees,
How to make the kitten sneeze,
Tell me a story and then I'll go to bed"
It "ends" with a spanking. Incidentally, we used to make tapes off the air
all of the time. We used Kor/Sonic (E.J. Korvettes' house brand), Lebotone
and Memorex compact cassettes (Invented by Philips in 1963 and do they give
me ONE bit of a royalty check, no!) and had a Concord tape recorder that
had a dial and a red button (that was for recording). We taped programs
off the TV (Mom was a soundtrack fiend) and used the same recorder for the
78's, which meant in front of the speaker, everyone be quiet, because the
mike was open.
To end this exotica-lly, one of the oddest themes we had was from "Black
Heritage", an old PBS public affairs program that may or may not have been
shown only in New York. It started out with bongos and then a sax and a
bass would play two interlocking melody lines. What made it odd was that
the drums were recorded at regular speed and the sax and the bass were at
double or triple-speed! Humming that theme could have meant a day away
from school nursing one's throat.
Hope you have enjoyed reading my reminiscences as much as I have enjoyed
reading others,
Brian Phillips

Ooo! Don't tell his lawyers. He has successfully sued to protect his
stage name twice, the most famous being Alan Freed who had to change the
name of his "Moondog's Rock 'n' Roll Party".

Yeah, that's a good one, maybe the best. In a way Tomita did become more
refined in his later works, but the early ones grab you more, Snowflakes also
has the good compositons. I do like the Bermuda Triangle LP, though,
soundwise: You don't trust your ears sometimes. Wish Tomita had done more
partitures by Bach!

The only record cover I've framed is called "Songs for Children" and shows
a toddler leaning over a record player with multi-colored 45's scattered on
the floor around him.
I love the image for any number of reasons but that wasn't me.
Friends of mine tell stories about knowing how to play their favorite songs
at three or four years old. One of them talks about how he knew where the
tune was by counting the bands on the LP. He refers to this as his
"earliest form of literacy".
But that wasn't my experience.
My father bought a Clairtone stereo console or whatever they're called,
those things in a mahogany cabinet. But I wasn't allowed to use it.
Of course I did, when everyone was gone.
And probably the first and only record of my father's that I played was
Oscar Peterson's recording of songs from West Side Story. I probably was
nine at the time. The other two records that I occasionally played were
Stan Kenton's version of West Side Story and Ray Charles with Betty Carter
singing "Baby it's cold outside". But mostly it was Oscar for me.
I can only remember my father having ten records at the most. A couple of
classical, which I didn't play. The Yellow Rolls Royce, which I grew to
hate. I'm not even sure why he had the thing. It was mostly furniture I
think.

Hello Tosh
Gainsbourg wrote every song on the cd. Isabelle Adjani cowrote 2
songs with Gainsbourg. Thanks for mentioning this important fact.
The only other information in the cd booklet is the words to the songs.
