Subject: (exotica) FeelthyMonkey LIVE Saturday Night
FeelthyMonkeyRadio has been down for a few days due to server problems,
but Saturday Night we will be back in GRAND style with a live netcast.
The live stuff will start around 8pm PST and go 'till someone says
"Uncle!" Recorded programming will be available later tonight (8pm PST
or so) untill then. (maybe live, but I doubt it)
Featured Guest Dj's will be Walter Ego, the powerpop dynamo with all the
greasy kid-stuff that the younsters are diggin' these days. DJ Kronk
will send us into orbit with his special brand of Astro-type-Surf and
raygun-equipped boogaloo, Enchantress of the airwaves Dusty Bowles
always suprises when she switches-on the Sunbeam Eclectomatic - Maybe
even yours truly will spin some recent thrift-store finds if I am still
standing after manning the barbeque and keeping the super-cooled
cocktails flowing during the pre-netcast nosh. The FeelthyCAM will be
operational until studio decorum dictates otherwise.
To receive the FeelthyMonkey netcast, go to
http://www.xtabay.com.feelthyradio.htm. you will need the latest version
of Winamp (available on the site) Once installed, click on either feed -
One for mortals with modems and the other for the blessed Cable-modem
crowd in S T E R E O even!
Users are encouraged to try the new MP3spy program as well - the new
software thingy that let's you easily find netcasts AND CHAT with
listeners an netcasters. (http://www.mp3spy.com) Once loaded, look for
US in the "talk" genre (remember, we have 2 feeds... we will be chatting
in the area associated with our 56k feed... This will all make sense
once you try it.)
Please try to come by the record party in the wire! Having tech
troubles with the netcast? Email me at rgrandia@xtabay.com
Be there!

Yes! By coincidence, I actually own another book about this

Money probably. MCA are probably of the opinion that there is
simply insufficient interest in these titles.
Varese are the only folks who have managed to get Command
titles reissued on CD and this is, I gather, only because they
happen to have a very good relationship with MCA.
But it is amazing that a Command (and of course Project 3) CD
retrospective hasn't happened yet. And the worrying thing is that
I've heard at least one of the original tapes has disintegrated to
extent that playing it would probably destroy it.
It's the centenary of Enoch Light's birth in 2005. Let's hope some
major reissue program is launched in time for that.
If I had the money and the clout with MCA I'd love to do it myself
but until I win the lottery and acquire some powerful music industry
friends I feel this is distinctly unlikely.
Maybe we should have a mailing list whip-round...

Space Bop #45 The Martin Denny (Belated) Birthday Tribute Show
This week, we finally get to do the Martin Denny show - not only his own
music, but also that of other musicians and bands he's influenced.
Certainly not comprehensive (hey, we only have an hour to do this

Les Baxter: Quiet Village "Quiet Village"
Martin Denny: Quiet Village "Exotica"
Tipsy: Something Tropical "Trip Tease"
Combustible Edison: Breakfast At Denny's "I, Swinger"
Martin Denny: Caravan "Exotica 3"

Subject: (exotica) NYC query
Hi, folks:
I'm going to New York Tuesday through Friday of this next week. If there's
anything exotica-ish happening, I'd love to hear about it.
More specifically, does anyone know of magazine collectible stores
in NYC? I know of Gallagher Paper Collectibles, which is fine, but
I'm looking for 1950s scandal magazines, and, along with those,
the April-May, 1953 issue of Amazing Stories. That has a short story,
"Mars Confidential," by Lait and Kefauver, the authors of "New York
Confidential", "Washington Confidential" and other best-selling
scandal-mongering books of the 1950s. I just found out about this
short story and am itching to get ahold of it. And, while I could troll
through
E-Bay, or get dirty reimmersing myself in sf fandom, I'd prefer to buy it
off a shelf in the Apple.
And as long as I'm off-topic here, I recently discovered that
www.spree.com is
offering video copies of "New Orleans After Dark," one of the cheesiest films
I've ever seen. I have a bad copy taped off middle-of-the-night tv a few
years
ago, and an original poster, but I got all excited at getting a commercial
release.
I tore open the package from Spree last week to find "The Frugal Gourmet:
New Orleans,"
and while I'm sure his jambalaya is delicious, this was a bit of a letdown.
But Spree kindly agreed to send me the right one toot sweet and let me keep
the cooking video, too.
And if anyone has access to a video of the same director's "The Invisible
Avenger,"
I'll come and work as their butler for a year out of gratitude -- er, I
see Sinister
Cinema now has it for sale, so the offer no longer stands.
And if anyone has access to copies of the films Inside Detroit, Miami
Expose, the Houston
Story, New Orleans Uncensored, Portland Expose or New York Confidential,
I'd be very, very happy.
Cheers,
Will

Subject: (exotica) Flea Market Weekend....
Whew! Am I stoked.........here's what I picked up Sunday: (From least, to =
most fab....)
1. Sinatra "That's Life" - enjoy this dude once in a while, and I noticed =
that guy Joabim (whole name?) from the Stan Getz jazz stuff mentioned on =
the sleeve so decided to check it out.
2. Don Costa "Echoing Voices and Trombones" - cool voice chorus (male and =
female group) with that smoooooth trombones sound. For some reason that =
wordless vocals stuff is very appealing so was happy to see "voice" in the =
album title instead of the actual dreaded "singers."
3. Stanley Black "For Latin Lovers" - I must have a huge selection of =
Black LP's, fun piano with surprisingly (at times) competent and full =
backing musicians. Great cover of "cha cha" girl surrounded by hands =
banging the bongos.
4. Sam the Sham and the Pharos "Wooly Bully" - Never really heard his =
originals, but do have a great tribute CD with the likes of Jackie and the =
Cedrics covering the tunes. LP itself is a little scratched, but should =
play "ok." *Another* fun cover with the turban clad band grouped on the =
front, and posing in the back of a hearse on the backside.
5. Mohammad El-Bakken and His Oriental Ensemble - 2 LP's "Sultan of =
Baghdad" and "Port Said". The latter cover is a white gal made up to look =
"oriental" with pasties on her chest. This guy's a hoot, holding some =
short-necked, stringed guitar-type instrument and wearing a turban with =
his three-piece suit. I *thought* I recognized a song from one of my =
"Strip" comps but I'm probably wrong.....haven't listened to any of these =
yet.............the covers are great! - Full-color "harem" scenes with =
babes in silk and our man Mohammad the center of attention.
6. *The FIND of the Day!* - Getting ready to skip outta the flea, I =
dropped by an old guys table to glance at what I expected to be "Sing =
Along with Mitch," etc. spread out on the table. There were only about a =
dozen albums, but my eye caught a brightly colored one tucked behind some =
marching band albums. Pulling it out, it was none other than Les Baxters =
"Ritual of the Savage" in MINT, MINT condition! I asked how much, =
figuring it would be $20-30 and managed to remain standing when he said =
$3. Further discussion revealed that he was an avid "hi-fi guy" cleaning =
out his house after moving his wife into a nursing home (Alzheimers). He =
mentioned having four stacks of records and rattled off Yuma Sumak and =
saying he probably had more Baxter, Denny, etc. So, I got real friendly, =
and got his number. I'll be stopping by his house early this week to =
(hopefully) score more great vinyl.
He said he only played his LP's once, taping them to play over and over. =
My kinda guy! He also mentioned his fancy turntable with separate parts =

How much is "Ritual" selling for? It's like brand-new vinyl, the cover's =

No reports on the "Voodoo" show in Minneapolis? Has everyone in attendance
been zombified or something?
There was definitely some voodoo synchronicity in the air this weekend...
Saturday night, AMC aired "Teenage Devil Dolls" with music "composed and
conducted by" *Robert Drasnin*.

I wonder if this was meant to be intriguing:

reissued the album where Yvette Mimieux read the

on sarod, but the moment cannot be too far distant.)
Any comments anyone, or did he make it up to take the piss?

Thought you might like to read this review of Plyboy/Playgirl from
British music paper "Melody Maker"
P5-Playboy and Playgirl
"Never mind letting records soundtrack your life: the point is
bending your life towards records.if you've ever tried at any point
this year to live your life according to the gospel of Japanese
club-pop, you'll know its an expensive business. Time to change
identities and get a whole new wallet full of store cards again, cos
Pizzicato Five are back with their best album yet. New boots and
panties all round.
No reason at all why the Fives dizzy, perfect conflation of
Sixties modishness and warped futurism should still work: just realise
that, in a room full of kool artefacts "playboy and playgirl" will
seep into the furniture and force your daily commute into funky order.
"la depression" and "rolls royce" are deliciously funksome
openers;"weekend" is beautifully garish psyche-soul; "magic twin
candle tale" a stupendous wall-of-sound bossanova;and the title track
makes the entirety of "gran tourismo" look like a sorry slop.
Praise comes no higher;music gets no more rich with style and vivdly
suggestive as this.Essential."

Brian and friends...now, it is _my__ turn to recommend some films to you!
YES, the PAWNBROKER is every bit as fabulous a film as it is
soundtrack. While this does not always happen to me, I've seen a
spate of film that equals it's OST and visa-vera: May I also laud:
THE PARTY(Henry Mancini)
BELL BOOK AND CANDLE(George Dunning)...and I am curious about some others I
have soundtracks for, such as EIGHT ON THE LAM, THE INTERNS, and TWO
FOR THE ROAD...
Jane "two thumbs up" Fondle
I can heartily recommend the Pawnbroker. Wonderfulness. Would like to see
the movie one day, which is, by most accounts, quite gripping.

The album really exists.
Yvette Mimieux/Ali Akbar Khan: Flowers of Evil [Connoisseur Society CS
2007]. You can see a picture of the cover on page 193 of "Incredibly
Strange Music Vol 2".
It's not bad, but I cannot help thinking that this is one of those records
that seem more interesting in the abstract.

Subject: Re: Re: (exotica) Kelbo's
Also of note is the sign which still bears the Tiki at the top above the
embarassingly bad addition of the Fantasy Island name
Dave, how did you hear of Kelbo's?
It was functioning well into the 80s but had many leans on it because the
owner (Kelly) had borrowed against it for other ventures such as a beer
vending machine company that failed
Lounge singer Joey Sehee (Wonderful World of Joey) tried to revive it by
having weekly shows there along with dj Senor Amor but to no avail.
Joey had a final show there after it reopened as Fan. Island in the the
"ballroom", The Co-co Bowl, which was once billed as the world's largest
coconut because the concave cieling over the dancefloor was painted to look
like an upside down coconut. that area is now a dungeon room and did have
blowup dolls on the cieling when I went there (for Joey's show)
They did save one of the booths from Kelbo's and the area that it is in is
called the shipwreck room and has other nautical decor. The third room is the
Harem room.
The real tragedy is that before the strip club got in there (the city would
not let them but it despite having the money, permits and a deal with Kelly)
a restaurant went in. Those stupid bastards trashed everything. right into
the dumpster. And then started a list of all the people who trailed in
wanting to buy the decor. they claimed they were going to have a garage sale
but they never did. Much to my joy the ONLY people that ever went to that
restuarant were the fans of Kelbo's who wanted to buy the decor. So the
restaurant closed less than a year after it opened and gutted the place.
The strip club probably would've left most of the decor in place and had a
Polynesian themed strip club
the moral of the story:
Strip clubs are better than restaurants when it comes to preserving history
