Great film. Okay good. A lot of fun. Very sixties. Great clothes.
Great cars. And a pretty interesting structure to boot.

M. Ace wrote <Saturday night, AMC aired "Teenage Devil Dolls" with music
"composed and conducted by" *Robert Drasnin*.>
For 1953 and even now this is a damn cool score, kind of a transition
from orchestral melodrama towards crime jazz, with flutes and tympani
and I swore I heard a theremin when junkie "Cholo" Martinez was goin
cold turkey in the desert. It's a very gritty 60 minute melodrama with
almost no dialogue, just a well-done voice-over by the cop. Remember
kids, smokin reefer leads to heroin. I think this is out on Mamie Van
Doren's Teen-Age Theater video series. The IMDB doesn't show any other
entries for Drasnin until "The Man From Uncle" around 1964.
BTW, AMC is doing some interesting things, usually on Sat nites in their
semi-lame American Pop format. As filler, they edit songs (Annette,
etc.) out of other movies and show them like music videos. You might see
the Supremes sing a few surfin'(????) songs from "Beach Ball", Scott
walker "Doin the Jerk" or Paul Lynde painfully trying to look interested
while ogling Linda Evans singing. In May AMC has scheduled Casino Royale
(without the annoying commercials that Bravo inserted), Modesty Blaise
and a buncha monster movies. Plus a molten hot young Ava Gardner sings a
song in Hemingway's "The Killers" (great movie!), but its possible she
was dubbed.

Subject: (exotica) SEA AND JUNGLE SHOP BUILDING.....GONE FOR GOOD!
Hi
On nights when I'm "On The Town," in LA (usually at the Dresden or some other
Hollywood location, actually I went to the House Of Blues and saw The
Residents which was awesome, worthy of another post on this newsgroup, anyone
else see 'em?) I take a back-road type route home to Burbank, to stay off the
main roads & freeways. Probably the same route one would have taken back in
the 40s and early 50s. When not in a hurry for an appointment, I enjoy taking
the old routes and vibing out on what might have been back in the day.
I always pass buy the beautiful A frame building that once was the Sea And
Jungle Shop, on San Fernando Road in Los Angeles, across from the train
tracks, right between the Atwater and Glendale areas. Don't know if any of
you experienced this place but they were one of the main suppliers to many
Polynesian Restaurants for years. I first heard of this place when I moved
here in '84, and went there...a year or so later they were in the process of
closing and had a 1/2 off sale. At the time I was quite broke; barely had any
money to speak of (and no credit cards) so I was only able to muster up about
$60.00. Got a nice African statue of two warriors, some spears, a mask, lots
of napkins, party favors, and a great bowl with three tikis (I used to use it
to burn powdered incense but these things were mostly used for flaming
drinks), plus two great lamps that have been with me through three different
locations, and currently hang in our living room, over our tiki bar.
They closed but the building remained, leaving lots of great memories. It
became overgrown with weeds but I still loved driving by this landmark, one
of the reasons for my nighttime back-road excursions through San Fernando
Road. A lingerie manufacture moved in there for quite sometime. I used to
have fantasies about getting some kind of windfall and buying the building to
house the Dionysus Records Empire. Man, that would've been great!
So, last night I'm driving the usual route, I turn the corner and feel my
heart drop in my stomach. Where the Sea and Jungle shop once stood, was a
huge plot of empty land...nothing left, nothing but dirt, like it never
existed.
Well, gang, that's it......maybe you can share some of your depressing
'recent history being mowed over' type stories.

Money probably. MCA are probably of the opinion that there is
simply insufficient interest in these titles.

Actually, it's probably a good thing, since MCA, in my opinion, is pretty notorious for spotty reissues. At least in my book.
How does one go about reissuing this stuff, and is it worth it (asking those who've tried, ie: Scamp)?

Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.
Does anyone know the theme song to the ABC movie of the week cir. late '60s -
early '70. If so who wrote/preformed it and where the hell can I be findin's
me a a copy. I remember it was rather groovy. Hearing Dionne Warwick do "Do
You Know The Way To San Jose" actually conjured a "Movie-O-the Week" theme
flashback. There's bits of the ABC tune hidden in "...To San Jose", most
likely it was vis-versa, but you know what I mean.
Thanks,
Roy

And no wonder! They were both written by Burt Bacharach. The
ABC Movie of the Week theme is "Nikki" which, if I'm remembering
right, is named for Burt's daughter. This tune has been lodged in my
head since I first heard it on the damn Movie of the Week back in
'69! It's on one of Bacharach's albums, but I can't remember which
one at the moment (album's at home).

*Jane Crowley
NEW YORK (AP) -- Jane Crowley, a longtime NBC-TV censor who worked on ``The
Tonight Show,'' ``Late Night With David Letterman'' and ``The Cosby Show,''
died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack. She was 73.
Johnny Carson, in his ``Tonight'' monologues, would occasionally refer to a
fictional censor named ``Priscilla Goodbody.''
Michael Mace, who worked for the show from 1968 to 1971 as an assistant to
Ed McMahon, said he believes Carson coined the name with Miss Crowley in mind.
Miss Crowley retired in 1987 after working for NBC for 40 years. As a
manager for Standards and Practices, she was assigned certain shows and had
the final say, in the tamer TV environment of her early career, on whether a
costume was too revealing or a word like ``toilet'' could be used.
Miss Crowley also worked for ``Your Show of Shows,'' starring Sid Caesar
and Imogene Coca, soap operas such as ``Another World'' and Hallmark Hall of
Fame specials.
*Rick Rood
ALPHARETTA, Ga. (AP) -- Rick Rood, who as ``Ravishing Rick Rude'' was one
of professional wrestling's biggest stars in the 1980s and early 1990s, died
April 20. He was 40.
Rood was found unconscious at his home. He was resuscitated, but died later
at a hospital. Autopsy results were pending.
Police Lt. Randy Johnson said empty prescription pill bottles were found
near Rood's bed.
Rood was charged April 9 with driving under the influence and blood test
results from that charge were pending, Johnson said.
In the ring, Rood played a womanizing, conceited bad guy who would often
finish off opponents with the ``Rude Awakening,'' a neck-breaking takedown.
He was injured in a 1994 match with the wrestler Sting in Japan and then
retired.
Since then, he was a manager and commentator for Extreme Championship
Wrestling, the World Wrestling Federation and, most recently, Atlanta-based
World Championship Wrestling.
*Roger and Larry Troutman
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- R&B star Roger Troutman, had hits such as ``More
Bounce to the Ounce'' and ``I Want to Be Your Man,'' was shot to death
Sunday along with his brother in an apparent murder-suicide, police said. He
was 47.
Troutman, who with his brother was part of the family group Zapp and
recorded as a solo artist under the name Roger, was found outside his
recording studio. He had been shot several times in the torso and died while
in surgery, police Sgt. Gary White said.
His brother, Larry Troutman, 54, was found dead in a car a few blocks away
with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. A handgun was found inside
the car, which matched the description of a car leaving the scene of Roger
Troutman's shooting, White said.
Ken Betz, executive director of the Montgomery County coroner's office,
said authorities believe Larry Troutman shot his brother Sunday and then
turned the gun on himself. The motive for the shooting was not immediately
clear.
The brothers were part of the Troutman family of performers that formed the
band Zapp and helped pioneer the rock-funk ``Dayton sound'' in the 1970s.

As JB aptly noted, there's a couple of choice items coming up on AMC.
If you taped Bravo's recent showing of "Casino Royale" (1967), it's already
time for a welcome upgrade (I still can't believe they cut the "Look Of
Love" sequence... there were some other bits missing too). Saturday night
at 10:00pm and 4:00am (eastern). No commercials, hopefully a full cut. And
sometimes their late showings are in widescreen format.
Then Sunday night at 10:00pm and 2:00am, it's the rarely seen "Modesty
Blaise" (1966), starring Monica Vitti. Don't miss it. I'm not sure I trust
that 2:00am time -- it goes against their usual late-night structure, but
maybe they're just feeling reckless. Again, the late showing may be
wide-screen.

Go to this URL and you can see a RealVideo clip of the opening sequence
along with the theme tune:
http://www.tvparty.com/vaultmov.html
From the site:
"I was looking for the theme to the "ABC Movies' for a long time and
stumbled across it within the past year. According to the liner notes in the
Burt Bacharach box set released by Rhino recently, this is the melody to a
song which Burt composed for his daughter and recorded in 1966. The tune is
called "Nikki", and was adapted by ABC for use as the Movie of the Week
theme. The 1966 recording is on the Rhino box set. An almost identical
version was recorded by Burt in 1971 and is on A&M album simply called "Burt
Bacharach". I was able to order a Japanese release of this CD from cdnow.com
(A&M POCM 2013). Neither version is as lushly orchestrated as the version
used on ABC. If anyone has any info about the availability of a recording of
the actual ABC version I would appreciate hearing about it."

It can be seen and heard at http://tvparty.com/vaultmov.html (one of my
favorite sites!) and that way you can dodge the ugly sweater

I pop it in the CD player...track 16.....it's 15 seconds long! I now know
what you mean when you call it cinema music. A nice intro.

It's funny that you define his look as "ski lodge".
In the video biography of Dusty Springfield, there
is a brief interview with Burt Bacharach....on the
slopes, with parka, skis, the whole shit and shebang!
I thought that was just so...*Burt* of him.

Recently pick up music by "Proteus 7" a CD called "For Your Ears Only"
On Dorian, a mostly classical label.
Proteus 7 is a group of 6 horns and one drummer. And they are all active
with symphony or pops orchestras around the globe.
Contents: all arranged by various members of the group.
7 Bond tracks loaded with corny S/F noises. (Done well I just don't go for
it)
also:
The Pink Panther
Mission Impossible
Secret Agent Man
5 Casino Royal tracks (by o' Burt)
Get Smart
And a couple of original tracks "Private Eye" and "Proteak Attack" by the
trumpet leader Anthony DiLorenzo. Who has done music for ABC's Wide World of
Sports and movie trailers.
Nicely packaged CD.

Ok, ok, so Burt's sweater isn't "ugly" per se, as just one part of the
whole image excuse me for "knit" picking.
It did get me thinking on the subject....
On the cover of Hit Maker (Kapp 1428) Burt dons a swinging yellow
V-neck. I could have sworn that I've seen a picture of Burt with sweater
draped over his shoulders, you know the style, arms loosely tied around
the neck... BTW did you also notice that all of Burt crew neck shirt
collars are turned up!
But, if you really want to get into sixties sweater wearin' album covers
check out Herb Alpert on the cover of Summertime (A&M 4314). The pose,
the setting is straight out of a J. Crew catalogue. Not to say that
that's good or bad, it's just so...well, it's just so Herb.

I really dig Andy Williams' groovy jumper choice. Especially that one
that has "ANDY" knitted into it in the middle of some exciting zig-zag
pattern. It rules.

Oh Nikki. I love that tune but I didn't know it before I heard it on Vince
Bell's "Airport" album. Great version especially if you like that
gloop-gloop guitar. The only vocal version I have is by Ed Ames on his
all-Bacharach record but as I'm sure you know, Ed can do more than just
throw a tomahawk.

Is that the one with EXTREME dynamics and sound effects? Is it all musical,

Well, this isn't my story; it's a bit I just read in Duncan McLean's "Lone
Star Swing: One Scotsman's odyssey in search of the true meaning of Texas
Swing":
I crossed the west fork of the Trinity River, then took Robert's Cut Off
south to White Settlement Road, and turned right. White Settlement was the
site of another landmark in the history of western swing, and the Musical
Brownies in particular, for it was four miles out of town down this road
that Papa Sam Cunningham had his Crystal Springs dancehall -- plus swimming
pool and fishing pond. It was here that the Brownies established themselves
as the biggest draw in Fort Worth, and here that they had the regular, long
gigs that enabled them to experiment with the mix of styles that would
eventually meld and (even more eventually) become known as western swing.
But the dancehall was long gone. A home-painted sign nailed to a telephone
pole claimed that this was Crystal Springs Mobile Home Park - NO DUMPIN'
FISHIN' PARKIN' - but even that facility had disappeared. The birthplace of
western swing was nothing but a weed-infested, rubbish-strewn vacant lot.

Well here you would have to define "good" a bit more. If you like "camp"
of that era, you will probably like it but in that same genre, I don't
think it's as good as "Valley of The Dolls" for instance.
