Check the little box under search that says "search descriptions also" or
something to that effect.
When you list something with Ebay at the end of the description type
"Keywords: Exotica, space age bachelor pad, mambo" or whatever. Most savy
Ebayers use the "search descriptions" when looking for items.
Good luck,

One of my friends (a hip hop and funk DJ) lent me a copy of a Lalo
Schiffrin 12 with Jaws and Quiet Village on it. I got a chance to play
Quiet Village when he gave it to me. Now theres a funny one. Now I'm
not a man for not for note covers of other peoples songs, but I think
he could have got away with calling it anything (Dam' Noisy Village for
one). Its got really big drums, a bass synth that brings to mind
Stevie Wonders' Superstition and String synths all over the place. I'm
still not sure what I think of it.
My friend also played Klaus Wunderlichts' version of Summertime, which
is unreservedly wonderful, Maximum Hammond Action over a nice fat
break.

Caught Cornelius' London gig the other night ... it was kinda interesting
but more "rawck 'n' roll" than i was hoping ...
yeah he played theremin (well ... not just squeals etc) and some pretty
cool hand held sampling devices and the visuals were good but the sound was
awful and that's important to me ...
i suppose i expected too much ...
i just got a CD in the 'Songbook' series, the Savage Pencil one ... you've
probably seen them ... they look so good (about 28 pages of SP's lunatic
scribblings + CD compilation) and this one even has "Until I Die" by the
Beach Boys, which i LOVE LOVE LOVE and hadn't heard for too long + other
tracks by SP himself, a spoken word pastiche of the "Sir Henry at Rawlinson
End" series by Vivian Stanshall, featuring a character called Dead Duck ...
has anyone seen any of the others in the series? i think it's a greAt idea

I know its a bit off topic, but all these acts have been discussed on
list before. I have tickets to Psychic TV next weekend and I've just
found out that ? and the mysterians are supporting, I came over all
excited and just had to tell someone. I missed them when they were over
in the summer and thought that was be my only opportunity to see them
gone. I know Ms Fondle recommended them mightily.
Should be an 'interesting' evening all round.
While on the subject of PTV, one of my friends recently gave me a tape
of a radio show with Genesis P'Orridge saying how similar he thought PTV
were to Martin Denny. He then played a really barking Denny track with
very heavy percussion and chanting, and you know, I could see what he
meant.
Have a good weekend everyone.

One of the better used record stores I've ever been to is in Minneapolis.
It's called "Hymie's". Or at least the guy is called Hymie.
There are three stores close to each other on this one street.
I know that one of them is called "Vintage Music" and it's the only really
thorough ALL-78's store I've ever seen. If you find that, you can find
Hymie. Then there's another store under Hymie's, I think called "Hazen" or
something to that effect. This is Hymie's ex-partner, I believe.
It's all kind of vague now. I love Minneapolis and there's obviously a
zillion record stores there but Hymie's is one of those great rare places
where he's got a bit of everything and he puts it out "priced to sell", not
priced "what he thinks he might be able to get someday".
Hymie introduced me to Perez Prado. That's sort of when this sickness
started.

Trouble is now I'm afraid it won't be there when I go back for it. It's
one of those small stores catering specifically to "rare
groove/Latin/blaxpoitation" DJ's and the like where any Shirley Scott LP is
going to be 25 bucks and you can get all the Willie Bobo you can shake a
stick at if you're willing to pay 35 bucks each, so I'm afraid that the
cheaper LP's don't last long.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1999--You've seen eBay the
online-auction Web site. Now come July, you can read eBay, the magazine.
Krause Publications, a Wisconsin-based publisher, plans to start publishing
a monthly magazine planned to help readers navigate the ins and outs of
online auctions. Although the name of the magazine is yet to be decided, the
name and brand cachet of eBay will be prominent, says the publication's
executive editor, Kevin Isaacson. Its tagline will be: Your roadmap to
treasures on the Internet. Isaacson says his initial circulation goal is
400,000. Isaacson says Krause has a marketing partnership with eBay, but
eBay hasn't invested in the launch of the magazine.

Subject: (exotica) that Bacharach article
Thanks to whoever pointed out that Bacharach article.
I agree with Will. There were sentences in there that made the hair on the
back of my neck stand up.
And like Will, I too have to quote one:
"Marimba? Theremin? Bossa nova beat? Cheesy echo effects? Hammond organ?
Surf guitar? Close harmony background singers? Mariachi trumpet? Cowbells?
Tuned bongos? Wind chimes? Press the button for the fantasy combo of your
choice and a mix tape will be generated automatically".
For those of you who didn't bother checking it out, it's not just about
Bacharach. It's about everything we listen to and discuss here.
It's funny how we ask each other about good books or articles on the
subject of this music and then I read this and it hits so close to home
that I actually find it annoying. The guy nails my taste and I feel like
yelling at him to back off.
Anyway, if you still have the url, check it out.

Most turntables have some way of calibrating then. If you are not comfortable
doing it yourself, there is sure to be some fix-it guy in your town that can
do it.
I REALLY want one of these Sound Burgers.... I have a few thrift stores that
I frequent that don't always have turntables
available for previewing, and I am getting pickier (is that a word?) about
what I will take home - even if it's 50 cents or a buck.
One of these gadgets would cut down on the trash-factor tremendously.
Does anyone (Charles, Charlie, anyone else) actually take this thing shopping
with them?

Subject: Re: (exotica) Audio Cassette labels.....
For really pro labels you could do this. If you have the software
(cause it can get a bit pricey).....
If you have
Pagemaker, Illustrator, FreeHand, CoralDRAW, or QuarkXPress,
You can download label templates for these programs at,
http://www.discmakers.com/music/templates/
they also have templates for vinyl, cd's, & cd-r's. Plus downloadable
fonts with icons to use (i.e. - compact disc, dolby, copyright,
etc...)
oh yes, for both PC and MAC platforms.
When I do my labels I use pagemaker to lay it out. Usually doing all
the graphic work in Photoshop and/or Illustrator. My partner uses
Quark over Pagemaker and he has used the templates on there with great
success.
This is a more expensive way to go, but if you have the software, get
the templates.
Before I had Pagemaker, I used a number of freeware and shareware
programs on the net, which links already mentioned on this list are
GREAT!
My 2 cents on a program not to use is Microsoft Publisher. Blah!
Just my opinion.
hope this helps,

That's the book Lou was keeping us posted on a little while back.

Subject: (exotica) Roger Nicholls & Small Circle Of Friends
Hello there,
Are any you soft-rock (or soft pop - if such a term exists) buffs on
the list aware of Roger Nicholls & Small Circle Of Friends? I had the
joy to acquaint myself with their music through a tape trade
recently. Roger and his chosen few perform music that can be
described as Burt Bacharach in a 60ies California vibe. Kinda like
what the Wondermints are aiming at in their more loungey moments. The
cherubic voiced Roger and his friends are surely a delight. As I
learned of the music through a tape trade I know absolutely zero else
than the name and the sound. When and where this Roger and his
friends were around in the first place, if they're still around or if
they are gone to soft-loungey-rock-heaven I don't know. I don't know
if Roger and his chums wrote any of the music themselves as I
recognize such classics as Don't go breaking my heart (Bacharach),
With a little help from my friends (Lennon/McCartney) and Coconut
Grove.
Well, enlighten me.
Niels

I also enjoyed this article tremendously, particularly the section
which considers Bacharach's songs as heard without lyrics, stripped
of 'the sonic furniture enabling them to "pass" as acceptable AM
product'.
Shame the website makes you keep clicking through the article
rather than letting you see it all in one go.
I have pasted the whole thing into a text file so I can send it to
my brother; if you would like a copy, please email me.

Subject: (exotica) Johnny Mathis/Midnight Cowboy
Johnny Mathis has been seeping into my consciousness recently.
I haven't gone as far as buying any records yet, but am interested
in Johnny's vocal version of the Midnight Cowboy theme, which I
found out about this morning.
Can anyone describe this, and maybe tell me which album this is on?
Midnight Cowboy - Johnny Mathis
(excerpt from
http://www.superior.net/~jimligon/lyrics/Misc_pop/Johnny_Mathis/Mid
night_Cowboy.txt)
(Midnight cowboy, midnight cowboy)
(He's a lonesome midnight cowboy)
Once his hopes were high as the sky
Once a dream was easy to buy
Soon his eager fingers are burned
Soon life's lonely lessons are learned
Hearts are made for caring
Life is made for sharing
Love is all that's left in the end
Beautiful, eh.....
thanks,
Jonny

These are also available on a Schifrin CD called "Black Widow" - can't
recommend it highly enough! They are quite unlike his other stuff,
really funky/Isaac Hayes-inspired - and a version of "Quiet Village"
unlike any other I have ever heard!

I believe this is the same version that's featured on a CD called
"Stereo-Cocktail", from Germany - none of the artists are credited, but
it's one of my favourite compilations.
