I can echo Jane Fondle's sentiments... It's pretty groovy, but whether =
it's a JACKSON worth of groovy is an individual thang. It does turn up =
at garage sales and whatnot, but then again, it's a matter of where and =
when.
If it were me, and the wax was minty-fresh, I'd flip for it, (but not =

This is one of the great, rare exotica records. I have no doubt whatsoever
that you will love it! There are many people on the list who would kill to
have it. Buy it and don't tell anyone where you live.

This is a great album in the Baxter vein of exotica stylings. It's one of
those albums that you can listen to all the way through with no real clunkers
to break the mood. ( a recommended bachelor / bachelorette pad seduction
record. ) I must stress though that this may not be every one's cup o' tea. If
you like exotica for its quirky kookiness ala Danny's Inferno or
Kingsley-Perrey then this album will probably disappoint. If, however, that
you can enjoy the subtle seductive strings of Les Baxter and are looking for
something more, than this album is for you. Still $ 20 is TOO much. I'd offer
$10 and if they don't accept that you can try my favorite tactic on an
overpriced record and go back once a month and offer $10 each time. They
usually give in on the second or third attempt. The record will never sell at
that price and when you make your offer you are reminding the seller that it
is overpriced. And you KNOW that they only paid $1 or less when they picked it
up.

*Lucille Vore
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Lucille Vore, who starred as ``Baby Lucille'' in the
original ``Our Gang'' comedy films, died April 8 of congestive heart
failure, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. She was 82.
She was discovered at age 4 by a movie director as she daintily removed a
pair of white gloves while riding on the San Diego Trolley. In 1920, she won
the ``Our Gang'' role after she was chosen over 400 little girls.
Dubbed ``Baby Lucille,'' Ms. Vore was the youngest in the ``Our Gang''
cast, which was known for its on-screen mischief and ability to escape any
serious consequences.
In the late 1920s, she appeared in three movies as a stand-in for Barbara
Stanwyck, but left acting soon after to become a registered nurse. In 1970,
she returned to star in a stage production of ``Little Murders'' at the Old
Globe Theatre in San Diego.
[This claim to Our Gang membership may be bogus. There have been many folks
who have falsely claimed to have been in the films. One odd detail in the
obit is the date 1920 -- the first Our Gang short was shot in 1922. -Lou]
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif., April 21 (UPI) -- Charles ``Buddy'' Rogers, who
began his movie career during the silent picture era and became the matinee
idol of millions of American girls in the 1930s, has died. He was 94 years old.
A spokeswoman for the Motion Picture and Television Fund said Rogers died
of natural causes this morning at his Rancho Mirage home in Southern
California. Funeral services were pending.
Rogers became a star after appearing in the 1927 silent World War I movie,
``Wings,'' which won the first Academy Award for Best Picture.
He played the perennial handsome college boy in nearly all of his 50 screen
roles.
The 1937 marriage of Rogers and movie queen Mary Pickford was one of the
top Hollywood stories of the year, joining ``America's boyfriend'' with
``America's sweetheart.'' It was the first marriage for the curly-haired
actor and bigtime swing band leader and the third for Pickford.
Rogers' first screen role was in 1925 in the silent film ``Fascinating
Youth.'' He followed it up with ``Wings'' and made his talking picture debut
in ``Abie's Irish Rose.''
He also worked on Broadway in 1933 with Ziegfeld's ``Hot Cha'' and had five
years in vaudeville and on radio.
Some of Rogers' other film roles included, ``My Best Girl,'' ``Working
Girls,'' ``Old Man Rhythm,'' ``Once In a Million,'' ``Dance Band'' and ``Get
Your Man.''
Rogers, born the son of a newspaper editor in Olathe, Kan., on Aug. 13,
1904, quit the movies for several years to try to rid himself of the
nickname Buddy and his film roles as the ideal of American youth.
He formed his own swing band and the group became one of the top dance
bands in the nation, making several tours of Europe.
Shortly after his marriage to Pickford, however, Rogers disbanded the group
and returned to Hollywood and the movies.
The Rogers settled down in the fabled Beverly Hills mansion Pickfair, the
``dream castle'' built for Pickford and her second husband, Douglas Fairbanks.
In the early days of TV, Rogers had a show in New York called ``Meet
Buddy'' and later hosted the Dumont network's ``Cavalcade of Bands'' show.
After that, Rogers mainly administered the land and commercial properties
the couple owned while his wife kept herself in self-enforced seclusion
until her death in 1979.
He made few films after his ``college boy days'' because ``they seem to
have forgotten me,'' he once said.
His last pictures were ``Don't Trust Your Husband,'' retitled ``An Innocent
Affair,'' with Fred MacMurray and Madeleine Carroll in 1948, and ``The
Parson and the Outlaw,'' a western about Billy the Kid, in 1957.
In October 1987, an 83-year-old Rogers attended a special showing of
``Wings,'' in which he appeared with Clara Bow, Richard Arlen and a bit
player named Gary Cooper. It was shown in the Mary Pickford Theater at the
Library of Congress.
Directed by William Wellman, ``Wings'' broke new ground in cinematography
for its spectacular aerial combat scenes, in which Rogers, Arlen and others
did their own flying.
``We did not have back processes at that time,'' Rogers recalled in an
interview. ``That's where you sit in a chair in the studio and the scenery
runs behind you. I had to learn to fly. They put us on a train to Kelly
Field in San Antonio, Texas.''
Rogers said: ``They got a second lieutenant and he taught me what he could
in a month or two. I had a camera (on the side of the plane), the controls
in front of me and another camera was on the cowling of the engine.
``We had to find our own clouds. We'd shoot one scene with a certain cloud
formation, we had to try to match it up the next day,'' he said. ``It was
different than today, I'll tell you.''
For his leading role in the film, Rogers was paid $75 a week.
After marrying his second wife, Beverly, Rogers kept busy with numerous
projects, including serving as chairman of the Pickford Foundation, which
supports the Pickford Theater and other causes devoted to the arts.
Rogers appeared at the Oscar Awards ceremony in Hollywood in 1985 to
receive the Jean Hersaholt Humanitarian Award, presented by Bob Hope.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) -- Actor and bandleader Charles ``Buddy''
Rogers, the husband of screen legend Mary Pickford and star of the first
film to win the best-picture Oscar, died Wednesday at his home. He was 94.
Rogers was a student at the University of Kansas when his father persuaded
him to send in his photo to a Paramount Pictures talent hunt. He made his
screen debut in 1926 with Paramount's ``Fascinating Youth.''
A year later, as the silent-movie era waned, Rogers starred in ``Wings,''
playing a small-town boy who becomes a World War I pilot only to
accidentally shoot down his best friend. The film took Hollywood's top honor
at the first Academy Awards ceremony in May 1929.
Rogers married Miss Pickford after her marriage to fellow superstar Douglas
Fairbanks fell apart in the 1930s. He was married to her from 1936 until her
death in 1979.
While his wife's celebrity surpassed his own, Rogers had roles in films
such as ``Young Eagles,'' ``This Way Please'' and ``Mexican Spitfire's
Baby,'' earning the nickname ``America's Boyfriend.''
Miss Pickford ended her film career after only a handful of talking films,
but Rogers remained active on screen through the '30s and early '40s.
After television arrived, he became a regular on the ``Cavalcade of Bands''
on the Dumont network in 1951.
Rogers, who remarried in 1980, is survived by his wife, Beverly.

Hey all--
A friend off-list pointed out an article to me in the new NY Review of
Books by Geoffrey O'Brien, all about Burt Bacharach's recent rehabilitation
and the "Lounge" phenomenon in general. We've had some discussions on the
list about "nostalgia," the media image of Lounge etc., so I thought I
should point it out here.
http://www.nybooks.com/nyrev/WWWfeatdisplay.cgi?19990506046R
[Do some stretching excercises on your mouse-finger first--because this one
is, count 'em, 22 screenfulls long.]
Theoretically it's a review of the new Rhino Bacharach Box and the recent
John Zorn Bacharach project--but it really turns into a long meditation on
the difference between hearing music new for the first time vs. listening
to it "ironically" as part of a revival.
I have some serious problems with the article (let's start with the fact
that he cites the _MusicHound Lounge_ book as proof of how ahistorical we
loungies are supposed to be). But he has some pretty sharp comments too,
and I'd be curious what other people think.

Subject: (exotica) "new" Drasnin album review and notes
So, I was in the local Tower records and ran across this album... "Exotic
Excursion". Says on the back it was arranged and conducted by Robert Drasnin,
and produced by Dave Pell, copyright 1996, 20 bit high definition mastering. I
look at the song titles and they seem familiar, but hey all of these exotica
albums have songs with similar titles... I love Drasnin's Voodoo! album (the
best exotica record ever, IMHO). The CD was $6 so I took a chance.
Well, how is "Exotic Excursion"?
The Bad:
1) this is a ten song version of the 12 song Voodoo! album already released by
Dionysus in late '95. The missing songs are Jardin de la Noche and Paradise.
Liner notes are substandard but there is at least some info (though it doesn't
say it is a reissue).
2) this thing seems like a ripoff.. with the low price, tacky cover art (sort of
a plus), and lack of full-disclosure of what this actually is.
The Good:
1) I've got to say the sound on this thing is great. Much, much better than the
Dionysus version which was mastered from an LP. There's no pops or hiss on this
thing
2) The price! Duh! Ok, you lose two songs but the cost is like $5-8 less!
Should you buy this?:
1) If you already have the Dionysus version it's a hard call. The better sound
is a definite plus, especially considering the low cost.
2) If you don't have Dionysus, I'm not sure. this is a really great CD, but I'd
hate to see Dionysus lose a sale... The liner notes are much, much better and
let's face it, Dionysus should get the sale! It's the right thing to do! But, if
you're cheap, Exotic Excursion is a nice way to go.
Amazon.com has it for less than $5 so check it out.

Geoffrey O'Brien's article isn't perfect, but it's pretty fabulous, I
thought,
and I've been trying to write sentences like the following all my life:
"Every listener's personal history can be stitched together
from recollections of first encounters, recollections that in
due course become private legends. There is some piece
of vinyl that is forever March 23, 1962. It is the peculiar faculty
of music to make each such first encounter, in retrospect, a
snapshot of what the world was at that moment, as if sound
were the most absorbent medium of all, soaking up histories
and philosophical systems and physical surroundings and
encoding them in something so slight as a single vocal quaver
or harpsichord interjection.

Subject: (exotica) Trade List
I've got some extra copies of some LPs here--generally ones where there's
Something Wrong and I was thinking of taking them back to the Kiwanis club.
But it occured to me that maybe I should offer them here first.
Apologies if you're not interested--just delete this--but I've tried to add
a bit of editorial comment to keep things somewhat relevant.
* George Cates _Polynesian Percussion_ (Dot)
Is it the suckiest album of all time? You decide!
(Mono copy, scratchy, cover thrashed)
* Enoch Light _Plays Happy Cha Chas Vol 2_ (Command)
I preferred Vol.1, but this is still pretty fun.
(Vinyl OK, mono release, wrong cover--from Vol. 1 instead)
* Les Baxter _Love is a Fabulous Thing_ (Capitol)
A bit too lush and soundtrack-y for me.
(Vinyl/cover fine, mono release)
* _Glenn W. Turner Speaks Out "You Can Better Your Best"_ (SOUNcot)
The harelipped motivational speaker, as seen in ISM vol. 2.
Unfortunately, not as weird as advertised--he just sounds a bit
nasal and gives a standard "believe in yourself" rap. The thought
that he wound up in prison after this is nice, though.
(Vinyl/cover OK, mono release)
* Ferrante & Teicher _Pianos in Paradise_ (UA)
F & T in transition, from prepared-piano madmen to smoothie
EZ-meisters. Still this "tropical exotica" effort has at least 3
worthwhile cuts.
(Mono copy, vinyl somewhat worn, cover OK)
* Edmundo Ros _Dance Again_ (London)
Probably the punchiest Edmundo LP; features the immortal
"Colonel Bogey" merengue.
(Vinyl slightly worn, some stains on cover)
* Enoch Light _Percussion and Brass_ (Grand Award)
It's got that Enoch sound--but the mildly jazzy repertoire
just didn't do it for me, compared to the more Latin releases.
(Vinyl/cover good, mono release)
* _'Lectric Woods_ (ABC)
I know Nat has mentioned this. I wanted to like it; I almost
kept it. But instead of being enthusiatically (though cluelessly)
"Now sound," this seemed lamely "Now sound," and just depressed
me. Though there really ought to be some kind of award for that
fruity drivel about Atlantis on the last track.
(Vinyl/cover fine)
* Werner Mueller _Hawaiian Swing_ (London)
I saved the best for last. Fabulously overblown, full of weird
mood swings, this is Hawaiian music on acid.
(vinyl slightly worn, cover good)
OK--
The ground rules are, no money may change hands. Whoever can send me
another interesting LP, a tape compilation, CDR, etc. gets the item. Email me
offlist and we can work something out.
cheers,

Subject: (exotica) how to list EXOTICA on eBay
Fellow listers,
Who knows the best way to find and/or list exotica/lounge/space age/just
plain odd records on eBay. I have some that are in great shape and should
sell but I have no idea what to "title" my ad. Also I can't find a listing
of all of the kind of records I like. I have to look up each artist
individually which destroys the element of discovery. When I do a title
search under "exotica" all I find is Martin Denny & Yma Sumac and softcore
videos! Is there a different title category that other listers use to search
for good LPs on eBay?
Thanks for the help!!

It depressed you? I guess I forgot to mention that I like things that
depress me.
If anyone is going to question my taste, I'm glad it's Ross who I'm sure
understands the vagaries of taste, especially when it comes to this stuff.
The good news and the bad news about this record is that it has pretensions
to "jazz". It's not jazzy enough to be really good and it's too jazzy to
have that cheesy, bouncy "now" sound.
Then again I like brave failures and big, suspicious messes. Once upon a
time, that was mainly applied to films. Now it's trickled down to records
which aren't good enough to keep and aren't bad enough to throw out.
If you want another version of "Time of the Season", you must have this.

Subject: Re: (exotica) how to list EXOTICA on eBay
From the main menu, I generally go Books, Movies, Music --> Music -->
Records and then check BOTH the "Search only within Music : Records"
and "Search within titles and descriptions" boxes.
In addition to searching for specific artists, I use the follwing
search terms: exotica, moog, theremin, bachelor pad, space age,
lounge, stereo, hammond, living stereo, easy listening, cheesecake,
phychedelic, sleazy... and whatever else comes to mind to describe the
stuff I'm looking for. Also, there are a number of modifiers you can
add to search terms to focus searches more -- check the search tips
section.
A lot of people put sentences like "take a look at my other
exotica/weird/lounge auctions" or something in their descriptions which
is why it's useful to search within both titles and descriptions. If
you do find a record you're interested in, make sure you check the
seller's other auctions to see if they have more like it.
