Subject: (exotica) fwd: On-line auction complaint site
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, U.S.A., 1999 FEB 17 (NB) -- By Bob Woods, Newsbytes.
New York City residents who feel they've been taken by an online auction
house, or by a third party using an Internet-based auction service, can now
file a complaint using the same medium instrumental in defrauding them: the
World Wide Web.
New York City's Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is now letting Big
Apple residents register complaints against online auction houses directly
via the DCA's Web site.
The Web page containing the sign-up form can be reached from DCA's main Web
site, at http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/nyclink/html/dca/home.html . At the site,
Web surfers can click on the "File A Complaint Against An Online Auction
House" link. The link can also be used for general communications with DCA,
a note at the Web site said.
Of all online auction houses, EBay in particular has been the DCA's target.
DCA press officer Shauna Keogan confirmed to Newsbytes late last month her
office is specifically looking into fraud charges against eBay, involving
sports memorabilia. Keogan said she could not go into any further details
about the investigation. Besides DCA, the New York Post also said the FBI
was looking into eBay.
EBay has also received negative press coverage in regards to alleged
fraudulent bidding. The New York Post in particular has spotlighted what it
called alleged fraud charges made against eBay in recent weeks.
"We have had subsequent conversations with the New York City Department of
Consumer Affairs and they have been unable to confirm elements of the
story," eBay told Newsbytes last month. An "unnamed source" was used in the
Post's report, eBay said, adding, "While eBay will not directly comment to
an unnamed source and hypothetical situations, eBay will discuss its
industry-leading trust and safety programs. It has always been eBay's
practice to offer to fully cooperate with any investigation involving
improper items on the site. EBay takes pride in its close working
relationship with law enforcement and regulatory agencies."
A source inside eBay told Newsbytes the company urges consumers who feel
they have been defrauded to take action against the third party who sold
them the product. "We encourage everyone to file a complaint, so the
(fraudulent party) can be found and prosecuted," the source also said.
EBay has always maintained it is not responsible for fraud on its Web site,
because it acts only as a "middleman" between buyer and seller. The Post had
reported DCA was specifically investigating eBay because sports memorabilia
dealers have allegedly sold "one-of-a-kind" items like signed baseballs to
many people. DCA also alleged eBay itself can be charged with fraud because
it collects fees from sellers on each item changing hands via the service,
the Post said.
EBay has recently touted other improvements it has made to its antifraud
SafeHarbor and Buddy Programs security features. EBay said SafeHarbor 2.0
and Legal Buddy Program 2.0 will help promote safe online trading, as well
as protect the overall community from fraud, the sale of illegal or
infringing materials and people that would misuse its system. The programs
even go so far as to provide free insurance from Lloyd's of London to
respected traders, eBay said.
Among the other features of the new systems are verified eBay user
identification status, an enhanced feedback forum area, tougher deadbeat
bidder and shill bidding policies, clarification of illegal items that are
not permissible for sale and strengthened antipiracy and anti- infringement
protection.
And earlier this month, eBay said it would work with credit-tracker Equifax
Inc. to help eliminate fraud on the company's person-to-person auction
service (Newsbytes, Feb. 11). A press report said eBay Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) Meg Whitman told an audience at the annual Goldman Sachs
Technology Symposium Equifax would operate as an independent authority to
verify the financial status of buyers and sellers using the eBay service.
EBay is making the move to eliminate possible fraud by people on either side
of the transaction, something that happens "about 27 out of every million
transactions," Whitman said.
EBay's Web site is at http://www.ebay.com

Subject: (exotica) New Radio Program: "Martinis With Mancini"
Introducing a new radio program on WJUL 91.5 in Lowell Massachusetts.
My Name is Domenic Ciccone and I'm the host of "Martinis With Mancini".
Broadcasting every Thursday's from 6-9 AM.
I picked the title "Martinis with Mancini" because I wanted something that
says "Lounge". There may be too many different things I want to play, but
hope to stay true to martini music.
I am mostly into Jazz and the American Soungbook. A year ago I started
buying some of the Ultra-Lounge CD's and other compilations and I want to
learn more about Lounge music. So I started the show!
I want to thank everyone who created informative web pages on Lounge, Space
Age Pop and Exotica. They really are helping me out. And all the DJ's who
post their playlists. I hope you don't mind me copying what you play out
there. I also have the Music Hound book, a good resource.
I notice a lot of Boston people on the list. An invitation to lounge
enthusiasts to contact me about co-hosting a program. We can talk about the
music on the air and play your favorite music. It would be a good way for me
to learn more and see these albums I should be looking for...
My brother even started a web page:
http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Booth/8007/. It need some work.

Re: Ananda Shankar
- - I've seen other lps by him written as both '...and his music' and '...and
his friends', but never seen one actually in the flesh. So are there
actually three albums by him, including the self-titled, or have my hopes
been raised in vain? I understand Blue Note are re-issuing the one he
recorded for EMI India in 75 later this year.
Re: Talkin' Jazz 3
- - Haven't seen anything in this series mentioned before, but am very
impressed with this, although the discounted price helped... It's all cuts
from the german MPS label, including stuff like Peter Thomas 'Stars and
Rockets', a fairly exotic Clark-Boland big band 'Shakara', as well as
several nice latin-ish numbers. Are the first two volumes any good?
There's also a track from an album called 'Jazz Meets India' which is rather
nice, and another from an album called 'Jazz Meets Indonesia'. Anyone have
these?

Mark McIntyre came home one day to find his daughters (11 and 13 years old,
I think) singing a song. Liking what he heard he had them record "Tonight,
You Belong to Me" (!)(McIntyre worked for Liberty, to grease the wheels!).
To see a picture of one of their records, go to
http://www.mindspring.com/~hagar/l.html , which is part of my page. They
also recorded the original version of "Gonna Get Along Without You Now".
This is the only 45 of theirs that I own.

I'm not sure if I have seen that, but it is most likely "Dimitri of Paris" from
their double-vinyl / CD album "Sacrebleu" and the song title would be "Une very
stylish fille". Label of it is "Yellow". In England over Timewarp-lasgo exports.
's a great album!

"The troupe has visited 28 countries, having performed in some

Ethiopia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Japan,
Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malawi, Nepal, New Zealand, Norway, Oman,

"The troupe's repertoire consists of a variety of stage-presentations
including ballets and a live orchestra conducted by Ananda Shankar."
Anyone see them ever?

Latin Pianos and Pianos in Paradise are great.
Keyboard Kapers (a reissue of Dynamic Twin Pianos) is an absolutely
amazing, completely over the top album of prepared piano. "Tea for Two"
has reverse tape loops!
I'll have to go back and listen to Golden Piano Hits. I may even have a
copy of "Enchanted World" somewhere....

Used book stores are another good place to try. I scored inexpensive (<
$1.00) copies of Les Baxter's "Tamboo" and "Jonathan and Darlene Edwards

The technology is really better then you make it sound. In fact many smaller
record labels are putting mp3-ified songs on CDs in addition to having them in
regular audio format.
The sound quality can be excellent, especially if you use a 44 khz variable
bit rate encoding. I personally have a voracious appetite for music and with
mp3s I can trade someone 8 to 10 albums (500 to 600 minutes) of CD quality
music on one CD-R and once I have it on a CD-R I can copy an album as easily
as coping a document file.
You may have to use your computer to play back the music, but there are free
standing little Walkman like mp3 players on the market, or it's very easy to
patch your sound card into your stereo receiver and use your computer like
another audio component.
It's also very easy to convert mp3 file to wav/aiff files and burn your own
CDs.
Especially with some of the rare exotica that may only be on vinyl and may not
ever be re-released, it would seem mp3s would be the ultimate format for those
of use who just want to hear the music. It's compact, it's cheap and it
sounds great, if that's "Teenager-land", then I want a one way ticket to it,
baby!!!

Subject: (exotica) MP3s as the way of the future
PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On the heels of its milestone
MP3 license agreement with Rykodisc, GoodNoise Corporation has signed They
Might Be Giants (TMBG), one of the most popular bands among Internet music
fans. Beginning today, fans can purchase five TMBG albums and 100 tracks at
http://GoodNoise.com and on the official TMBG website at
http://www.tmbg.com. In the coming months, GoodNoise and TMBG will release
15 previously unreleased tracks.
"Our MP3 release will collect a lot of Dial-A-Song recordings, and
preview some of our upcoming album material as well as find a home for some
of the wilder songs." said John Flansburgh, of They Might Be Giants.
They Might Be Giants has built a reputation as one of the most
innovative, unique rock bands in the world. The band is known for live
performances and has performed over 1000 shows around the world. TMBG has
sold over 3 million records worldwide and has released 10 videos. TMBG has
developed a special relationship with their fans through innovative programs
such as their "Dial-A-Song" service, which offers fans the ability to hear a
different new song every hour.
"They Might Be Giants has a huge following on the Internet and is
certainly one of the most innovative bands of the past decade," said Gene
Hoffman, president and CEO of GoodNoise. "TMBG has always used innovative
tools to reach out to their fan base. Selling their music in MP3 will allow
them to further leverage the Internet as a means connecting with their
existing fan base and exposing their music to new fans."
"We knew a couple of years ago there was a lot of trading of Dial-A-Song
files on MP3. It's always surprising where the next medium for music comes
from, and even more surprising how any people, especially music people,
think nothing will ever change. When we made our first 'indie' album in the
late eighties, the record company didn't even want to make CDs. We had to
find another 'indie' to manufacture a CD after the album took off," said
Flansburgh.
TMBG's music has attracted an extremely diverse fan base ranging from
children to older adults. The group's popularity and accessibility to fans
has allowed them to build an extremely loyal, active Internet fan base.
TMBG.com, the official website of the band, attracts thousands visitors each
week and there are dozens of websites created by the band's fervent fans.
TMBG's Internet popularity was confirmed recently when TMBG member John
Linnell was voted the 9th Most Beautiful Person in People Magazine's 3rd
Annual "Most Beautiful People" online reader's poll. In addition, John
Flansburgh recently found himself near the top of a Time Magazine online
poll for the Person of the Century. Along with their next (old fashioned)
CD release, They Might Be Giants are currently completing a children's album
and a series of performance segments for ABC's Nightline Primetime to be
broadcast this summer.

by Yma Sumac? I bought the CD last week at a flea market for $3 and am still
digesting it.
For laughs I lent it to one of my Led Zep listening co-workers. After
listening to one track he renamed Yma: "Poison" Sumac....
I keep telling him Yma is an acquired taste..... a lot like Led Zep! 8')

Actually, I think it is related to the Swedish group ABBA -- Who did not have
a 4 octave range but did have 4 voices, each with their own octave. And the
"XT" is like Extra without the "ra" sound (you know, like "give me an exta
moonpie). Thus it is:
exta-ABBA-e.

No, I DON'T think anyone wants to comment on the actual record. We are too
busy coming up with funny freaking pronunciations for the title.
Maybe next week,

Spoilsport that I am, I decided to pass the Xtabay pronunciation conundrum
by Don Pierson (webmaster of the Official Amy Camus web site).
Here's his response:
Dear Lou,
Hi! It's interesting timing as someone just yesterday asked me the same
thing. In five or so years of running the Official Authorized Yma Sumac
Homepage, no one has ever asked!
The word "Xtabay," of course, was made up by record execs at Capitol
Records (although I've also heard that it was a figure in Mayan legend -
there is a document in Spanish that I saw about it recently). That means
that there may not be a real "written-n-blood" pronunciation of it.
The proper pronunciation (the one that I have always heard) is:
EX-tabee, although many pronounce it EX-taby, as in "by" or EX-tabay, as
in "bay." The first one would be the closest, but the third would also
be close and they are both close to each other. But, when using Spanish
pronunciation, the second would be best, although it's not a Spanish
word so it would not make sense to compare it to that language.
Hopefully this convoluted answer will not confuse things even more!

Now here is the REALLY interesting and coincidental part... That person =
was ME. I went looking for Yma Sumac sites and naturally, his popped =
right up. (the site, that is)
Don also informed me that "Xtabay" was invented and copyrighted by the =
good folks at EMI.... Whoops... Guess registering Xtabay.com as a domain =
name was not such a good idea aftar all. Especially since the main =
feature of Xtabay.com will be streaming audio. (Helloooo, ASCAP)
I thought Xtabay was some legendary city, therefore not copyright-able. =

Me, I love it. Sumac was my introduction to Exotica, back in 1976 or 1977 when
my hip Uncle played several of her 78's for me. Also, he played "Anna (El
Baion)" by Silvana Mangano. Slightly before she and the backup singers sing,
"El Baion!" there is a line that sounds as if the singers sing, "She gobbles it
up!", which was not the line, of course, however, when you are a teenage boy
and you hear that, well...
About the Xtabay (darned if I can pronounce it either!), through the magic of
the internet and the Alta Vista translator, here is part of the legend from
Mario Diaz Triay 's" Tour guide of the Peninsula de Yucatan, the Land of the
Mayans ", The Tzacam is a flower that arose from the grave of the lustful,
sinning, woman Xkeban [Down with the Jaguar, perhaps? - Ed.]. From this flower
springs Xtabay:
"...she is the woman XTABAY the one who arose from the TZACAM, the flower of
the punzador cactus; when it sees a man, it returns to life and waits it under
ceibas combing her long hair with a piece of TZACAM made bristle prongs. It
follows the men until it is able to attract them, seduces them quickly kills
them in the frenzy of a infernal love."
Hasn't happened to me yet, but I wouldn't walk near any suspicious-looking
cactii.
So maybe "Xtabay" is indeed a real word, likened to Lorelei (for purposes of
this group, perhaps spelled Lauralei, Jane F.?)
Brian Phillips (or maybe I am Nairb Spillihp from Dar Es Salaam...)

Speaking for myself, I consider it one of the sacred relics of exotica.
Totally other-worldly and compelling. And don't overlook Les Baxter's
involvement, though the extent of that is debated.
I pronounce it "godhead".
>For laughs I lent it to one of my Led Zep listening co-workers. After

That's rich, considering Robert Plant seems to have copped half of his
vocal schtick from Yma (the other half from porno soundtracks). Hold it.
Yma? Porno soundtracks? I'm beginning to make Plant sound cool.

F*@K YEAH! She gobbles it up INDEED!
So I guess Xtabay was NOT a concoction at the marketing dept at EMI. =

Yes. Strange that you should mention this as I just returned from a 2 wee=
k score-a-rama holiday to LA and Vegas. I made this CD at Disneyland and =
how fab. Over 200 tracks to choose from including narration from closed =
attractions and safety spiels telling you to keep your arms inside the =
car. Most of the tiki room stuff is available, but not the whole narratio=
n as on the LP. However, the Tiki Garden spiel is included, which I got, =
which is previously unavailable. I also got the full narration from the =
now-defunct Submarine Voyage. DIVE!
I think it is brilliant. 20 bucks for 10 tracks - you choose 'em. Well =
worth it. AND...your name is printed on the cover and CD! Cool or what?! =
I must have had at least 5 friends (and I left 2 days after Disneyland) =
shit themselves over the CD. Very good stuff to choose from.

A while back I mentioned that I'd found an MP3 of Patience & Prudence
doing a charming "We Can't Sing Rhythm & Blues" on Usenets's
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1950s (my cable modem makes the download
painless).
Mucho interesting stuff is posted in the 50s mp3 group as well as the
later decade groups. Doo-woppers and rockabilly fans post rarities from
their vinyl, and you can make requests.
On the new CD "Songs for the Jet Set Vol.2", someone called Kim & Co.
does two songs (including "Lolita Ya-Ya"!!!!) and sounds a lot like
Patience & Prudence. Momus is involved with the CD but I don't know much
else except I like both volumes and they are cheap. Maybe its because
I've been immersed in breathy female vocals lately, including Kahime
Karie, Jane Birkin, Astrud Gilberto, Charlotte Gainesbourg, and the
verrrrrrry sexy Rhino CD comp "Pillow Talk - The Sensuous Sounds of
Sylvia." Yes, she's the one from Mickey & Sylvia, but this is smooooth
soul with her hit "Pillow Talk" and a fine cover of Marvin Gaye's " You
Sure Love To Ball." Whew!!!!!!!
