Re: Denny.
I thought the stereo material was from the stereo version of "Exotica" which
Denny rerecorded in '58. I actually liked the presence of these tracks since I
already had the mono version on the Scamp reissue. Yes, the mono version is
superior, but from a comparison's sake it was nice to listen to. I'll agree that
the liner notes were disappointing, although I do appreciate the info on the
songwriters and original album info on the track listing (something I wish had
been done on the Lyman "Best of" from the Bachelor's Den series).
Also, for the most part I thought the unreleased tracks were pretty good (some
quite excellent); again I like these since I can't get them anywhere else. Since
it is billed more as a "boxed set" rather than a 'greatest hits' these seem
appropriate to me.
I'll never understand why "Voodoo Dreams" never makes it to the comps though...

Benny Golson is one of the great arrangers of jazz, having come out of
that harmonic fantasyland that Philadelphia was in the late 50s/early 60s.
His talent is getting a large group sound of of a half-dozen muscians. If
you go to rmb or any of the jazz lists, the word that is perpetually used
is "under-rated". However, like Oliver Nelson and JJ Johnson, other
brilliant jazz guys with dollar signs in their eyes, he did a fair amount
of work in Hollywood.
On another note: David Letterman is now making jokes about Ebay. It is a
different world than the one we were born into.

Exotica listers:
(Please forward to anyone you think will care)
After a few month hiatus, the live incarnation of Zombo's Mondo Record
Party returns to NE Ohio for a regular Thursday night stint at the Rhythm
Room in Cleveland. Zombo has a radio show of the same name on Fridays
11-noon, Sunday nights 11-1 Eastern on WAPS, Akron (accessible via Real
Audio at www.wapsfm.com). Styles cover surf, rockabilly, lounge/exotica,
and sundry other cool and misfit musics, with accompanying visual
ambience at the live shows.
Zombo's a friend of mine, and I'm a pretty frequent guest on his radio
shows and I will be manning the DJ booth for him a couple of times the
next few weeks at the Rhythm Room. If anyone's in the area and wants to
check it out, here's an upcoming schedule:
Feb. 18 - DJ: Zombo; Band: Lords of the Highway
Feb. 25 - DJ: Tothar; Band: The Haydevils
March 4 - DJ: Zombo; No Band
March 11 - DJ: Tothar; Band: The Weird Love Makers (from Columbus)
March 18 - DJ: Zombo; No Band
It runs from 10PM-1AM, with live bands typically going on at 11:00 for
45-60 minutes every other Thursday.
The Rhythm Room is located at the corner of Cedar & Taylor on the east
side. Locals can get some more info over the next few weeks in write-ups
in The Spot and The Free Times. E-mail me if you want any more info.

I guess that touches on another part of my problem with this e-bay thing
(which, after getting lots of feedback is a problem few share with me!) I
often DON'T know what I'm looking for until I find it. Stuff I find by total
accident appeals to me more than a calculated trip to consumerland. Its the
accidental treasure that I treasure, not the album found after a multi-month
search. Not that I DON'T buy that particular album. For example I knew if I
ever found The Genuine Electric Latin Love Machine that I would buy it right
then and there, but I never hunted it down like an animal. I found it by
accident. (I think I'll give the world a break from my opinions for awhile.
Thanks for putting up with this and hope someone can add to it)

The best known artist on this label is Jacques Higelin though I have a
few other French soundtracks that somehow managed to get on to
the label but I don't think are/were signed to it. Higelin is a blues-rocker
& I guess the closest comparison if any would be Johnny Hallyday.
I haven't heard Brigitte Fontaine but I always imagine her to sound more like
Francoise Hardy's folkier sound or Nico but can't say for sure. I see these
everywhere here in Montreal and I've been meaning to listen to them.
I don't think they would be too common in most places in North America.
Maybe Elisabeth knows these acts but let me have a listen this weekend
in the stores and I'll report back.
What most interests me on this label os a sub-label called PoPo or
Popcolour which is a Japanese affiliated project with Saravah. I
have two releases on it, one by a group called Dragibus which plays
what I would describe as "acid jazz for kids" and is inspired by traditional
kids songs. Another by a group called Mamie Chan Band is a bit less
consistent but has a sound that reminds me in places of circus music.
One of my interest is finding out music that works for both kids and adults
so that's my reason for interest in this label.

This is a real goat skin shrunken head made by the Jivaro Indians of Equador.
They are the same indians that used to actually shrink human heads. The Angora
goats used have unusually long hair that resembles human hair. This particular
head is approximately 3 1/2 inches tall with long black hair of 8 1/2 inches.
It is mounted on a 1 foot bamboo stand that comes with the head. The head can
easily be removed for viewing.

I've always tried to say this like I was pronouncing "ecstasy". Accent on
the first syllable, very soft "b" with your voice trailing off in a
husky whisper.
Be prepared for the consequences of practicing this pronounciation

promising to me. Also with Robert Morley and Constance Cummings.

Beware the search engine (any search engine, for that matter). I did a
seach on e-bay under the "magazines-general" category for "mad" (no quotes)
and got *seven* hits. I did a page-by-page browse and usually found more
than seven Mad Magazines on each 25-item page. I searched for "mad" again
the next day and got over 100 hits. Just so you know...

Speaking of commercials again - did you guys catch that new Honda commercial
with the man selling tikis - I think it says something like "Tiki Dan" in a
Tiki Hut and he's selling tiki cards or pictures of tikis? Then they cut to a
car driving down the road. I haven't personally seen the commercial so I
can't give anything other than this half-baked description from my boyfriend.
Has anyone else on the list seen this and what is the tie-in with the car???
Tiki Dan Tie-In:
Also one day when I was on the Santa Monica freeway I saw a license plate on a
car and it said "Tiki Dan". I wonder if this is the guy in the commercial or
did someone rip off this guy's license plate as their inspiration for this
Honda commercial. I wonder who that Tiki Dan guy is that is driving around
L.A. Never have seen him again.

at this moment in time, its a way for kids to get a song they like from an

they don't have an interesting buying for free. they are mostly 'traded'

6 to 12 minutes transfer time for one song... is really teenager-land if ya

Soooo very timely, this question is! Glad ya asked Michele!
Mp3 is a means of compressing digital audio, which takes a rather large =
amount of storage space and bandwidth to transmit, into much smaller =
files with a minimum of fidelity loss (theoretically) The idea is that =
the leaner the filesize, the easier it is to store on a computer, or =
other digital device. It's also much easier to transmit over the 'net. =
Compacting the file size has it's dpwnsides, as the soud quality is =
affected.
It just so happens I have been experimenting with Mp3. Windoze users can =
hear this file in realtime. anyone with patience and an Mp3 player can =
download it: http://www.xtabay.com.cnchost.com/FAntastica%205!!s.mp3
and hear Johan DaDa Vis's most excellent Fantastica Program #5
(I hope you do not mind this, Johan) Bear in mind, this a HIGHLY =
compressed file (about 500 megs into 14 megs) but for the purposes of =
realtime streaming, sacrifices must be made. The audio quality does not =
do justice to Johan's mad, MAD mixing, but it's better than never =
hearing it.
REQUIRES MS Netshow and 33.6k connection or faster...give it a while to =
buffer before it starts playing, as it takes about 2 minutes to get =
started.
I'd love to hear feedback about the stream... I suggest you also send =
Johan a note too if you enjoy his work.

back about three weeks ago they changed their search engine from a Boolean one
(where you use AND, OR, NOT, etc.) to a non-Boolean one. Thus typing Mad
Magazine works like it did when you used to like them with an AND. This whole
thing confused me for a while.
You can go to the search page and use the old search if you like (there is a
link to it at the top of the page). There is also a page that explains the
new search engine. It is easier to use the new engine if you do not know
computer talk that well.
Me? I like anything called Boolean so I wish the old one was still the only
one.
AND that IS the END of THIS email.

The liner notes says its THE utopian album for young romantics. The
record was designed to make every flirtation an affair to remember.
Lots of exotica standards like Quiet village, Shangri-La, Yellow Bird,
Flamingo, Bali Hai and Pagan love song.
The title is correct. It seems this paradise features one Harpsichord
and a lot of rain, it never stops!... lots of thunders too. And
birdcalls.
There is even a track called "Tiki Waterfall" written by the
producer/Arranger Al Capps. At the Harpsichord i guess Jonathan Knight

Capitol did go with the later recorded stereo versions of the Denny, however
the seminal Les Baxter tracks from his first several albums are re-processed
stereo.
Also, for the most part I thought the unreleased tracks were pretty good
(some
quite excellent); again I like these since I can't get them anywhere else.
Since
it is billed more as a "boxed set" rather than a 'greatest hits' these seem
appropriate to me.
That's the problem with these three sets they are neither proper best of's
because there are glarring omissions in favor of rarities. While I picked them
up primarily because of these rare tracks, I think they reflect the compiler's
personal tastes more than providing a definitive greatest hits collection.
Toshiba EMI did a better job in that department on their Denny best-of one
just one disc.

Anybody out there familiar with Patience And Prudence?
I'm finding that unearthing their recordings is quite the challenge.
So far, only 45's and 78's are all I can find. Maybe that's all they made -
no LP's?
I have not tried record search services, but they do pop up on - ahem - EBAY.
Not cheap, active bids and always sell.
I know little about them, but love the one little 45 I have on Liberty.
thanks for any help...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Eugene Jelesnik, who was host of a weekly TV show
``Talent Showcase'' and one of Utah's most familiar musical figures for

The violinist-impresario-composer served as a conductor of the Salt Lake

Frank Sinatra for concerts at what is now the Utah State Fairpark.
Born in Ukraine, Jelesnik fled with his mother and aunt to the United
States to escape the Russian Revolution. He began his career as a musician
in 1935 in New York City, where he was discovered by vaudeville performer
Sophie Tucker.
Jelesnik conducted 19 overseas USO tours, including two to Vietnam. He
received the Civilian Service Award Ribbon from the War Department for his
service under fire during World War II in Italy.
