I've kept out of the Xtabay controversy since I have no reason to learn the
pronunciation of any word I'm not likely to ever have occasion to speak out
loud.
But you do remind me of another similar word, the pronunciation of which
might come in handy.
I can't remember the proper spelling but I'm sure some of you will know of
whom I speak.
"Mr. Mxtyplxt". The little imp from Superman comics who you had to trick
into saying his name backwards before he would leave and stop making your
life a living hell.
If only life worked like that. If only all annoying people would disappear
if you could get them to say their name backwards. Then you would only
have to trick me into signing a post as "Enok Tan" and I would never be
able to ruin your morning again.
Anyway, if anyone can help with some kind of phonetic pronunciation. I'm
expecting imp visitations any day now.
Signed,
The other Enok

I've always pronounced it mix-PIT-il-ik. I think that's how it was
pronounced in the Superman cartoon series back in the early 70's...

Subject: (exotica) My li'l Yma yarn....
Ahhh....all this talk of Ms. Sumac has bubbled up some great memories
for me...namely, the CONCERT I saw her give in NYC in '89!!! It was
soon after her re-emergence on the Willner-produced 'STAY AWAKE' comp,
in which she cut a beautiful track with full orchestra. This was an
intimate, rather Martin Denny-like orchestra with her lilting voice in
gorgous form. Man could that woman sing. My buddy and I went backstage
and she called us into the dressing room and signed a poster, CD's and
my copy of 'Fuego Del Andes', all 'With Love, Yma Sumac 1989" in ornate
script. A real thrill.
Does anyone have any info as to her status now? Is she in OK health?
One last bit: Although all her 50's releases are dear to my heart, my
new favorite release by her is my most recent (and super-rare) find,
MIRACLES, 1972, produced and penned by Les Baxter. It's a psychedelic
rock record with her singing over it. Incredibly Strange Music called
it 'one of the most psychedelic albums ever made.' It is so odd that
I'd be inclined to agree.
Ciao,
Keith

If you really want good laughs from a Led Zep listening cow-orker, you
need a copy of the magnificent "New Sounds of Chico Arnez" album,
which has an sleazy cheesy easy instrumental version of "Whole Lotta Love".
(Mind you, that guy who requested "something by The Who" once was dead
chuffed with Lord Sitar's version of "I Can See For Miles"...)

Subject: (exotica) Re"Alan Tew Plays The Music Of Tom Springfield Latin Style" ( Con t our)
I bought Robbie's spare copy of this and its a very fine record. More
Sound Gallery than Hanged Man in feel. Featuring Harry Stoneham (of
recent studio 2 double pack re-release) on Hammond Organ, and Laurie
(man or Woman?) Steel on guitar. Its the kind of record that makes me
laugh out loud when I listen to it. Worth the money for the
introduction to Georgie Girl alone, the rest of the LP is good too.
Other stand outs for me were The Troubleshooters (already described,
quite dark), The Carnival is Over and A World Of Our Own with the
melody played on what sounds like one of those chime instruments they
have in marching bands. I didn't think side 2 was so strong, but I
enjoyed side 1 so much I played it several times and haven't given the
flip much of a chance yet.
The cover is fairly non-descript, a latin street scene that I may have
missed in a shop if I'd seen it. But the sleeve notes are good, with a
quote from Tom Springfield on how he likes to actively employ the LCD
(Lowest Common Denominator) in his song writing. So shameless.
So, got to look out for the western themes (and the rest) now.

Erkin Koray-Elektronik Turkular
Gorgeous German issue of material by this elusive Turkish Guitar God/Sitar
God psychedelic legend. Unlike previous Koray albums (including
some CDs that have come out in Turkey that are basically impossible to
find), this appears to be a straight reissue of a complete album from 1974,
with original cover artwork reproduced on the full color gatefold/fold out.
Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, but mastered off of vinyl (expecting a master
tape transfer on something of this vintage would be about as ridiculous as
believing that Santa Claus wears pants). Beautifully developed eastern
melodies via a folk-ish/psych merger and some of Koray's most extended
tracks. Sitar Psychedelia. Big time mesmerizing stuff.
Some amazing instrumentals, some amazing vocals, some vocals with chanting,
very melodic and straight forward, not difficult AT ALL to love and be
mezmerized by, sing along to, with Tabla, Bongos, Piano, Electric Guitar
and Sitar, Bass, Drums and other Turkish Percussion.
Totally unfuckingbelieveable. 10 Stars!!! No shit

I remember in the comic book (must have been the early 60's)
they explained that it was to be pronounced:
mix-yez-pit-lek
He actually appeared in the Lois & Clark series a couple of years

It's also referred to on the back of Dominic Frontiere's PAGAN FESTIVAL
LP on Columbia. There's a song called "Goddess of Love (X-Tabai)" on
there. All the songs have parenthetical Inca translated titles. Unless
every label was making up bogus Inca words and swiping from Capitol's
"Xtabay" to make it consistent, and based on the above Yucatan reference
quote, I seriously doubt if the term was invented by Capitol.
Also, with my limited knowledge of Yucatan pronunciation, I side with
hk-tah-bay, with the first syllable like you're quietly clearing your
throat to spit, as I heard a reliable friend pronounce it once.
But man, one great thing to come out of all this: King Kini's Xtabay
auction gripe was, IMO, one of the funniest/most ingenious postings this
list has ever seen.

though it looked much later than 50's for a mono record.
I tried to bargain it down, but the record guy said that the "mono" made it
all the more collectible. Hmmmmm.
Anyway, anyone know if these are worth three or four dollars?
Also picked up Al Hirt doing Music to Watch Girls by and Mais Que Nada. I
don't know about him, but it's hard to go wrong with those two tunes.
Also picked up a slightly beat copy of the Quincy Jones arranged This Is
Basie or something like that. Hits of the 50s and 60s arranged for Count
Basie and big band. No Kirk on it, but I like QJ's arranging skills.
Anyone else want to comment on these?
Peter

Very sad! I love "The Big Hurt", one of the great beautiful "mystery"-songs of
all times. A very rare timeless spaceless category of undestructable evergreens
like "Some Velvet Morning", "Green Tambourine", "Windmills Of Your MInds",
"Johnny Remember Me", "Gotta See Jane", "In the Year 2525", "We'll Meet Again",
something like that, at least to me.
The harmonies of "The Big Hurt"...they never come to an end, mysteriously going
and going like eternally. Composer is Wayne Shanklin, who also did "Chanson
D'Amour" (Art & Dotty Todd), that's about all I know about him and I know nothing
about Miss Toni Fisher, which makes the whole affair even more mysterious, to me
at least. Both songs appear on a neat little Cheapo-CD called "Classic Hits" on
Curb Records, Nashville... mysterious label, too.

What I failed to disclose, was that I was able to sell off a lot of dupe
promos I had from early Rounder Record days when they were releasing Studio
One records on their newly created Heartbeat Records. These records cost a few
dollars.....

One's French. The other's Jewish. They were on the Mike Douglas and Merv
Griffin talk shows almost every other day it seemed. Sometimes they sing
together in harmony and sometimes they sing in English and French at the
same time. I have four of their LP's and love them all. There was always
something classy and cool about them.
Their version of the Bacharach tune "Odds n Ends" is a classic.
I have no idea about reissued CD's but I wouldn't pass up an LP if you see
one.

CNR is most definitely not dead, as anyone who saw him (looking good) on The

That's not how I read it at all. "We will email you on the receipt of your
payment, shipping of the item and when feedback is left" says to me that
they'll mail you when they get your payment, they'll mail you when they ship,
and they'll mail you when they leave feedback about you.
Would have said something earlier but I'm catching up on old messages tonight.

Of course by now everybody know I am an "eBay-head." What I have not admitted
is that the is one aspect I HATE about eBay; and that is that some sellers
load these cheese MIDI sequences that automatically load when you view their
stuff.
Well, having said that now I have to eat my words. One of the sellers had a
MIDI of the Hawaii 50 theme song. It is the best MIDI I have ever heard.
If you want a copy, email me off list and I will try to keep list and email it
to you. It's play time is one minute and 52 seconds and is only 21 KB in
size. Email me ONLY OFF LIST if you want it. I will wait a few days to get
everybody's response before sending it.

Well, a definite hmmm to that, but I do know this is a highly
collectible and valuable record. I haven't actually HEARD it,
though. The Keating sound is, I believe, Johnny Keating. I do have
another record with Shake Keane on it -- "Bard with a Beat", music
portraying Shakespeare in one way or another (also with the input of
David Lindup and Ken Jones). That one's pretty nice "chamber jazz"
where Shake is concerned, definitely a very nice record, if not
earthshattering. I would say on the strength of this that 3 bucks
on a Shake Keane record is not a waste.

I picked up a couple of albums by them, "Side by Side" and "On the Move"
because someone on the list spoke rather highly of them (Nat?).
Unfortunately,I found nothing in them to hold my attention. Honestly I
don't get the attraction to these guys, perhaps I picked up their two
bumb albums. The arragement actually aren't half bad ( Sid Feller), but
their singing is so lacking in any inflection it just counteracts the
enjoyment of the music. They sound to me like Andy Williams times 2. So
if you like straight, inembelished, whitebread singing this could be the
duo for you.
To their credit I still kept these albums, although if you saw some of
the stuff that I "just keep around" you might not think of this as a good
thing...

<< << Toshiba EMI did a better job in that department on their Denny best-of

Which one is this?? Tracks??? >>
It is titled "The Exotic Sounds - The Very Best Of Martin Denny"
It is 28 tracks (not counting the "intro" which is the introduction taken from
Denny's live album which opens the disc. The tracks follow in chronological
order,
Quiet Village (original mono version)
Jungle Flower ": "
Japanese Farewell Song
Forbidden Island
Mau Mau
Bangcock Cockfight
American In Bali
Hypnotique
Jungle Madness
Ma'Chumba
Bamboo Lullaby
Manila
Happy Talk
Sake Rock
Firecracker
Paradise Found
Cross Current
Stardust
Over The Rainbow
Strange Music
Moonlight & Shadows
Blue Paradise
Balck Orchid
On A Clear Day
Sukiyaki
Indrani
Hawaiian Rhapsody
Quiet Village (moog version)
All the tracks from "Stardust" on down are not available on any other CD
(while both "Black Orchid" and "Quiet Village (moog version)" do appear on the
Capitol double, they fall prey to the annoying seguing situatioin which has
marred the whole series of Ultra Lounges)
Any other Denny collectors on the list I sure will agree that this track
listing provides a far more satisfying representation of Martuin Denny's best
work than any other collection around, even with the Capitol double sets
luxury of being able to include 12 more tracks.
Regarding the Rhino collection, it remains a fine compilation, again I believe
providing a better overall representation despite the far fewer tracks it
contains than the Capitol double. Being the first CD collection of Denny's
tracks it was a godsend and the liner notes together make it a truly treasured
title, as it was put together with the utmost reverance and respect for Denny
rather than a cash in on the several yeras later "lounge" craze. The track
choice was so good it was even copied track-for-track by the UK's Revola label
in the UK (the reissue arm of Creation records).
The only problem with it is from a technological rarther than aesthetic
standpoint. The ability to more properly master tracks onto a CD has moved
lightyears ahead since this CD was released. All you have to do is compare
shared tracks on either the Scamp or Capitol reissues and you'll hear the
sonic difference. The other problem with the Rhino set is that for some
unknown studio mix-up, the tracks taken form the "Afro-dsia" album have the
right and left channels reveresed! Not only that but a huge portion of Augie
Colon's tse-tse fly impression has been removed form the "Tse-Tse" fly track.
Any true Denny collector should own the Capitol double set if not just for the
tracks album track unavaialble on other CD reissues, but for the unreleased
tracks. However stay clear of the liner notes which despite being written
after actually interviewing Martin Denny, have more errors than an early Mets
game and do get somewhat disparaging in places. I guess because RJ Smith had
written a couple of "exotica" and "lounge" articles he was (quite incorrectly)
viewed by the reissue staff on the Ultra Lounge series as the "expert" to get
to write the notes. I can tell you that these liner notes irk Martin Denny to
no end especially when they overlook his role as arranger and band leader in
favor of labeling him at one point "the piano player from the dagger bar" and
for calling the quite elaborate multi-building Don The Beachcomer's Waikiki
restaurant complex a "joint." (One of my traesures is a copy of this CD Martin
Denny sent me with the inaccuracies he personally highligthed in orange
marker!) Not to mention that it says "Exotica" was recorded in the Henry J
Kaiser Aluminium dome in 1957 (the wrong year and the wrong place -- please
someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't believe the Aluminium Dome
was yet built in 1956).
So there you have it, time for me to free up the soap box for someone else!
