On a ska compilation from '89 (that was just recently reissued),
SKANK - Licensed to Ska, The Busters do a nice ska version of
Peter Thomas' Raumpatrouille theme, entitling it "Orion."
Also, Boston area tiki fans might be interested in knowing that
Newbury Comics has started carrying some nice tikis -- about 6"
or so -- that sell for around $7. I don't know if they're in *all* of
the stores, but definitely the Harvard Square one (and surely
some others). They've also got tiki key chains and a few other
related items. [DISCLOSURE: Yes, I work there. No I don't get
a commission.]

Maybe so, but they made it anyway. The call attributed to Petrillo
on the "Celebs" CD is definitely Harold Flender, taken from his
United Artists LP "Candid Telefun." In fact this particular call
(inquiring at a pet shop about monkeys for cooking) is depicted
on the cover of FlenderÆs LP.
Sammy Petrillo also recorded an album of crank calls, "My Son,
The Phone Caller," (I donÆt recall the label offhand) which is
a laff riot. It deserves to be reissued in its entirety, although
mainstream AmericaÆs fascination with crank calls (Jerky Boys,
Roy D. Mercer, etc.) seems to have petered out. For the time
being, anybody wishing to hear PetrilloÆs abuse of the communications
infrastructure will have to seek out his LP.
WFMU has an interview with Sammy on their web site:

Most of GolsonÆs work was in "legitimate" jazz. He wrote many
tunes which have become jazz standards ("Blues March," "Killer
Joe" etc.), and is probably best known for his stints with Art
BlakeyÆs Jazz Messengers and the Jazztet, which he co-led with
trumpeter Art Farmer.
List members might find his album "Triple Play: Pop + Swing =
Jazz" (Audio Fidelity, 1962) to be of interest. ItÆs a stereo
novelty record with an orchestra playing a pop standard on one
channel while a jazz group plays a tune based on the same chord
structure on the other channel (e.g. "Whispering" and "GroovinÆ
High"). The idea is for the listener to adjust the balance and
"mix your own" album, albeit in the most primitive way. The jazz
half of the LP was reissued on CD by Fresh Sounds a few years
ago.
If you like "Tune In, Turn On" you might want to check out Willie
BoboÆs "Juicy," also recently issued by Verve. Bobo covers some
of the same tunes (Music To Watch Girls By, The Disadvantages
of You) and the album has a similar feel.
While weÆre on the subject, readers of this list who are looking
for unusual and entertaining music would do well to investigate
some other jazz artists. I see Charles MingusÆs "Cumbia and Jazz
Fusion" Rahsaan Roland KirkÆs "Blacknuss" and any number of Sun
Ra recordings fitting right in with items regularly discussed
here.
Keep your eyes peeled in case Verve ever reissues Jimmy SmithÆs
"Monster" LP (1965). SmithÆs organ fronts Oliver NelsonÆs big
band on the themes from "Goldfinger," "Bewitched," "The Munsters"
and "The Man with the Golden Arm." ItÆs a good æun.

Just got Benny Golson's Tune In, Turn On to the Hippest Commercials of
the Sixties (Verve), which is a good 1967 collection of revisited music
from commercials. I'd never heard of Golson before, and I'd like to know

Benny Golson was a MAJOR jazz sax man. NONE of his other stuff is this
"GOOD". It's 10 zillion times better in a completely different way.

I recently picked up "The Hash Brown Sound" by Hash Brown and his
Ignunt Strings. I would describe it as being like a very cool twist
album with strings; the version of "Smoke In Your Eyes" is an
uptempo'd instrumental with pizzicato plucking; there are other great
pieces such as "Overseas Operator" and "The Chug-A-Lug" with
entertaining vocal snippets ("Get your motor running baby... we're
gonna do the chug-a-lug" -- cue engine noise).
Never seen this mentioned here before. Does anyone know anything else
about "Hash Brown", real name apparently but implausibly Harry
Lookofsky? Discographic/biographic info, recommended listening, whatever?
Cheers,
Pete.

*Buddy Wayne Knox
BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) -- Buddy Wayne Knox, a rockabilly singer and
songwriter who hit the top of the charts with ``Party Doll'' in the 1950s,
died Sunday of cancer. He was 65.
Knox penned his biggest hit, ``Party Doll,'' as early as 1948. Seven years
later, he formed the Rhythm Orchids with Jimmy Bowen on bass and Don Lanier
on guitar. Studio owner Norman Petty cut ``Party Doll'' and Bowen's ``I'm
Stickin' With You'' on the local Triple-D label in 1956, using a cardboard
box instead of drums.
The tunes were later picked up by Roulette's then-new NYC label, which
split the songs onto two records, each with a ``B'' side.
Each sold a million copies and ``Party Doll'' became a No. 1 hit.
Knox had a string of other songs on the charts in the '50s, including
``Hula Love,'' ``Rock Your Little Baby To Sleep,'' and ``Somebody Touched Me.''
In 1997, Knox joined The Crickets, Bobby Vee and The Shirelles at a Buddy
Holly Tribute concert to mark the 38th anniversary of the singer's death.
Concerts commemorating ``the day that music died'' -- as singer-songwriter
Don McLean put it in his 1972 hit ``American Pie'' -- have become an annual
event.

*Gerald Gregory
GARY, Ind. (AP) -- Gerald ``Bounce'' Gregory, the bass singer who hit the
distinctive low notes on The Spaniels' 1950s classic ``Goodnight Sweetheart,
Goodnight,'' died Friday at age 64.
While the doo-wop group didn't hit it big nationally, their signature song,
penned by lead singer James ``Pookie'' Hudson, was covered by several bands
during the 1950s, notably The McGwire Sisters and Pat Boone.
Sha-Na-Na sang ``Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight'' to close its television
show each week.
The Spaniels were made up of students from Gary's Roosevelt High School.
Gregory, Hudson, Willie C. Jackson, Opal Courtney Jr. and Ernest Warren
formed the group in 1952. The group later signed with Chicago record label
Vee Jay Records.
The Spaniels were awarded the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm & Blues
Foundation of the Smithsonian Institution in 1991.
The group's career was at its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, but the
Spaniels, with some replacement members, continued to perform around the
country. Gregory's last performance with the group was in December 1998.

Well, I caught 'em just this past Friday with visiting Adam Axelson...
he the son of and percussionist for his dad, Bo Axelson... the great
exotica band from Sweden on Subliminal Sounds. King Arthur holds court
every Friday at the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel from noon - 2pm. He
plays solo under a banyan tree, doing his own bird calls and jungle
sounds when he plays "Quiet Village" and all your other favorites.
Old-timers kick back with mai tais and pupus and remember the days. No
cover charge. Mr. Lyman is quite regal, approachable, and still plays
great. Adam was ecstatically besides himself. Just another day in
paradise...

I'd do three things.
Mention to them that you are not supposed to give feedback until the =
deal is complete. Unless it stated in the selling part, I don't think =
they can force you to fill out feedback. All you're responsible for is =
the payment plus whatever else they listed, like Shipping and Handling.
Also, I'd turn 'em in to Ebay. I don't know that you'd get a ton of =
response, but if enough people mention it, they could lose their ability =
to sell there.
Finally, if you want, put feedback, then amend it. You now have the =
ability to amend feedback, and I would. Put decent feedback, then after =
you get your thing, put honest feedback. Like, "Hey, they completed the =
transaction alright, but they made me do feedback first, so be careful."
Something like that.
I dunno.
That's what I'd do.
Also, and again, i didn't get the actual email, but it didn't look like =
they were necessarily soliciting pre-feedback.

They seem to be collections of production library music, with "Betty Page-
Danger Girl" focusing on crime-jazz and "Betty Page - Jungle Girl"
featuring exotica. In terms of sound quality, both volumes sound fine to
me.
I should say that the releases feature a nice selection of
performers...John Barry, Johnny Hawksworth, Malcolm Lockyer, Roger Roger,
etc.
...and of course there are the Betty Page pictures...

Subject: (exotica) Romantic Moods of Jackie Gleason
I just bought the Capitol 2 CD comp "The Romantic Moods of Jackie Gleason"
There is some amazingly silky sounds on the comp. There are also some
slightly more exotic elements in some of the songs. I was wondering what you
all think are the weirder or more exotic Gleason albums, if there are any?
Thanks

i have about a dozen gleason lp's by now. don't think that was
what he was about at all, exotica. he's more about "make-out"
music. he's odd to me in some respects but i like his stuff more
and more.

the one that comes to mind for me is THE NOW SOUND FOR TODAY'S LOVERS (Capitol
SW 2935).
Gleason's string orchestra with sitar (Mike Deasy) and other exotic
instruments which are decribed in detail on the back cover. Tabla, Dharma
bells, Gamelan gongs, chinese bell tree and more, all played by Emil Richards,
many from his own private collection.
Titles include:
Goin Out Of My Head
Live For Life
Yesterday
Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Moon River
It is definitely odd, but I don't find it all that enjoyable to listen to.
Everything is s-l-o-w-e-d w-a-y d-o-w-n and even the frequently
used sitar can't save it. But I'm keeping it anyway.

From the obits:
<In the early 1960s, Byard began recording with Mingus. He played on the
classic albums ``Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus'' and ``The Black
Saint and the Sinner Lady.'' >
There have been a ton of "erotic soundtrack" reissues in the last couple
years (i know, I have em), but Mingus' "Black Saint etc." still puts em
all to shame. This is pure, sweaty, nasty, dirty, grunting and groaning
wild thing music, no human sound effects needed, with some peaceful
interludes allowing time to smoke a cigarette (if you don't smoke, then
chew). It beats the pants off "The Story of O" OST.

There is a CD-ROM of Betty Page which i haven't seen that supposedly
includes her shorts. Also, while searching the IMDB for breathily
intimate torch singer Jeri Southern, who i've never seen mentioned on
this list, I found her in 1958's "I, Mobster", a Corman flick with
stripper Lili St. Cyr, the delightfully trashy Yvette (Attack of the
Giant Leeches/AND 50 Foot Woman")Vickers as The Blonde, and a male
character aptly named Cherry Nose. Sounds like a winner to me.

Used?
Are you sure they were her shorts? They'd be hard to authenticate.

Hey -- them is fighting words. I kindly offer: The reason it makes "no human
sense" to you is that you have never used it.
There were over 1.5 million items up for bid yesterday. Their tremendous and
fast search engine can find just about anything. That elusive Martin Denny
or Esquivel album -- it will come up eventually. That rare tiki mug you just
have to have to complete (is it ever really complete???) -- it's there. A
hubcap for a 1932 Hupmobile -- there is a set of 4.
I represents a tremendous way to find things that may take years of thrifting
to uncover. Does it replace thrifting? No. Does it replace antiqueing? No.
Just one more avenue. And that avenue is lined with the neatest junk you have
ever seen?
Respectfully,

Any comments on the RELATIVE quality and content of the Gleason one VS. THE

In my humble opinion while they do provide a decent overwiew, on each
collection there are glaring track omissions in favor of lesser material and
often total inaccuraies in the liner notes (the Denny especially) and then
there is the matter of the stereo-ized treatment of the mono recordings which
takes away from the authenticity as well.

Subject: (exotica) Calling all dj's, journalists and distributors
Hi there, I have recently started partnership with Paolo Scotti, the
man who invented Easy Tempo compilations (he compiled the first 5
volumes, though some of his records still popped up somehow in
following releases). He was also responsible for the "Scoctopus"
(meaning Scotti's Octopus, btw) compilation on Schema records, which
was the first comp of italian library music (later followed those on
Plastic recs).
I have already written to the list that Paolo has a new label of his
own now, called "Studio Uno". Three 12" vinyls are out: 1) Piero
Piccioni's "O rugido do leao"; 2) Franco Godi's "W la felicita'";
3) Berto Pisano's "Kill". All releases feature original version of
the songs, plus remixes. Also, there's the vinyl/CD compilation
"Third Millennium".
Future releases are:
1) CLUB MORRICONE: a limited edition, vinyl only, compilation of easy
Morricone tracks, half on the bossa side and half on the psychedelic
vibe.
2) IL MONDO DEI GIOVANI (The World Of The Young): featuring tracks
from Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, Berto Pisano, Luis Bacalov, and
other gurus of italian grooviness.
Any DJ, journalist and DISTRIBUTOR interested in receiving promo
stuff can contact me. DJ's and journalists please specify
station/magazine they play/write for.
Thank you
