Thank you, Thank you, mimim@texas.net (Mimi Mayer) for the only one to
respond to my giddy rant about discovering Ferrante & Teicher's good
side! Also, thanks to Frank (recliner@ime.net) for posting the LP
dates...they're not listed on the sleeves.
Regarding the release dates...on the back of HI-FIreworks it mentions 2
other earlier releases by F&T (their first?)...has anyone heard
"Continental Holiday" or "Music from Can-Can and Me & Juliet"? Are they
prepared piano records or the schmaltz thing? I would guess they are
their experimental style from the fact that they predate the ones we're
talking about.
In any case, I picked up 'F&T with Percussion' and 'Keyboard Kapers'
(re-release of Dynamic Twin Pianos), and at this point I'm
ass-over-heels sold on these guys. Thru my initial shock and laughter
all I could think was..."John Cage on helium!" Great great stuff, man.
Ciao!

The Fibonaccis covered Rota and Snakefinger did as well! Mid 80s. Damn,
I had that record, gave it away. Wasn't there something like "I'm Nino"?
Rota sure was a cornerstone of European film music. When he died, and
shortly after him Fellini and Juliettea Massini as well, it was like a
whole era ended.
Do you happen to know if he did any Italo Western scores?

Yes, the track is called 'Shing faces (I am Nino)' and it is on the
album 'Manual of errors'.

Subject: (exotica) Mindexpanders/Animated Egg
Hello all,
New CD Add: Extremely Limited Quantites
Mindexpanders-What's Happening backed with the Animated Egg, both from
circa 1967. $20 plus shipping.
In case you don't know, the "Animated Egg" were the pseudo psych 60's Go Go
band that is the 101 Strings Orchestra "Astro Sounds From Beyond The Year
2000", without the 101 Strings Orchestra AND the sound fully de-compressed
and FAT with KILLER Fuzz Guitars and Fat Rich Organ, FULL BASS, Great SHARP
Drums, Rhythm Electric Guitar. Great stuff indeed.
Titles; A Love Built on Sand, Inside Looking Out, I Said She Said Ah Cid,
"T"omorrow, Sure Listic, Sippin' and Trippin', Dark, Down Down and Gone,
Sock It My Way, That's How It Is.
The Mindexpanders are totally cool, melodic, funky and wild/weird 60's
Exotica and Exotic Psychedelia/Go Go Exotic Psychedelia with the Ondioline
out in front with Fuzz Guitars and Squawk Box, Chinese Bell Trees, Panther
Combo Organ, Bongo, Boo Bams, Kazoo, Bird Calls, Sounds with honking horns
and of the Streets with Busses zooming along et al, all instrumentals.
It is awesome and super super cool like you could never imagine.
It is, for me, more Exotica than it is psychedelic but it is DEFINITLEY
psychedelic and VERY VERY GROOVY as well as everything else I mentioned.
It's like nothing you have ever heard anywhere, swear to god. It's 60's Go
Go and Exotica, a very varied sound that every tune is distinct in its
originality.
Titles; Love Syndrome, Theme From, Pictures At A Psychedelic Art
Exhibition, Cul de Sac, Downtown Trip, Pulsation, A Night On Bald Mountain,
Sensory Overload, Euphoria, Mandela
The CD also has 4 Bonus Tracks:
2 are Ondioline Screaming Exotica with Major Weird and Cool Percussion from
Frenchman, Clyde Borley and His 5 Dimensions, circa 1966, recorded in
France. Titles; "Taboo" and "Afro-Mania".
1 is THAT bitchin' Sitar track with Major Percussive Exotica and a title
called "Jungle Fantasy" and last but not least is
an electronic piece from the soundtrack to "War of The Worlds" from the
great Leith Stevens.
All in all, I think a great effort. Impeccable sound fidelity, all in Stereo.
$20.00 plus shipping. Please e-mail direct if interested
Thanks for the space,
Jack

I'm not going to dispute the idea that the prepared piano "exotica" records
are more interesting in general but I have to put in a good word or two for
the rest of the records, which you're calling schmaltz.
And most of them are schmaltzy I guess.
But for instance "Latin Pianos" (with Don Costa) is a great record.
And scattered through their "now sound" records, there are occasionally
great cuts such as "Lay Lady Lay" from the Getting Together LP.
I think they were basically always "schmaltzy" but sometimes they got lucky
and were more than that.

I can't go that far. I find Magnante's playing and arranging to be really
strong and interesting but his tune selection is really annoying. I always
get the vague feeling that I'm at a cheesy Italian wedding and the band
can't stop playing Lady of Spain. They're not doing the standard version
certainly but I really wish they'd play something different.

Some of the finest renditions can be heard over several Pascaal
Comelade recordings... and with the added attraction of masterful toy
piano sound... Now that's exotic!!!
Re: Nymphomania

Actually our set is one blue and one gold. I'm not
complaining long as they play (and they do) unlike that Ursula 1000
blue bottom special (also an OM exclusive) that does not on my
player. It's especially frustrating if it's good - and the place
selling it doesn't happen to mention they know of the problem.
This leads to the problem I have in buying boot cd's - never being
sure if the thing will play. Just use the ?%$)! gold ones I say...
Needless to say I now intend to ask this question before I order
another!

Hi from Kiwiland.
Does anyone out there know much more about UK Percussion guy Frank
Barber?? A list of albums?
I have only one album by him - "Swingin' Percussion" and its wonderful.
My favorite version yet of "Spanish Flea" - I'm thinking seriously of
making myself a tape of all the versions of this song - if I see it on
an unknown albums songlist I'll normally buy it. Quite a good quality
indicator I find.
I've only ever seen one other album by him and it was a "Hits of the
30's" type affair.
Picked up a couple of nice odd moog finds this weekend.
The Carmets "Synthesizer Electric Sound", Moog & Arranged by Yusuke
Hoguchi. (JVC Quad CD-4)
"Golden Hour of Golden Instrumental Hits featuring The Many Moogs of
Killer Watts" (Pye - Golden Hour)
Killer title huh.
Pretty good for a budget label and it really is 60mins+ long - on Side 2
the last groove is so close to the label my turntable refuses to play
the last song - the autostop kicks in there. Budget or what?
The other albums on this label pictured on the back lack any promise -
Golden Hours of Max Bygraves, Russ Conway & Jims Mcleods Golden Hour of
Scottish Dancing.
Cheers

Dunno if this one slipped through or not, but there is a REALLY haunting
version of "You and You Alone (La Strada Theme)" done by The Three Suns.
It's a non-LP single side (there's a boatload of killer non-LP Three Suns
material from 1953-1963, BTW).

Rapturously *beautiful*. Might sound lackluster to you, but it makes ME

Well, unless the liner notes were lying, it was *something* they did with
a piano and not a theremin or other instrument. I assumed it was bowing
or sliding something up and down the strings.
>Could a treated piano fan supply the date/label for HI-FIreworks?
The first prepared F&T (and I personally think, while still mighty cool,
the least developed and least interesting), _HI-FIreworks_ was released
on Columbia CL 573 around 1954-55. Original pressings give the title on
the label as something like _Hi-Fi 3-D Pianos_. It was reissued less
"Susanna's Last Stand" and "Semper Fidelis" on Columbia's budget Harmony
label as _Fireworks_ sometime in the 1960s as HL 7427 and SH 11227
(simulated stereo; actually sounds pretty nifty).
> Even better, how's about the URL for an F&T discography?
I'll try to compile what I know, including the prepared tracks appearing
on otherwise non-prepared albums.

It's *extremely* important to note that _Heavenly Sounds of F&T w/ Orch._
looks/sounds *totally different* from the original _Heavenly Sounds In
Hi-Fi_. With F&T's UA "orchestral" sound so commercially successful, ABC
recorded new orchestral overdubs for the _Heavenly Sounds_ album, as well
as _Blast Off!_ (minus "In the Rain" as _We've Got Rhythm_ (ABC/ABCS
556)). Sure, occasionally some of the weird piano effects are smothered
in strings, but I found many of the orchestral overdubbed versions of HS
songs came off much more cinematic and epic sci-fi. And while I'm sure
the added orchestra was intended to make these sound more "commercially
viable," the truth is there's nothing overdubs can do to un-weird stuff
like "Chopsticks Cha Cha" from _Blast Off!_ (I personally think the
imposed strings made it even *weirder*). I think any real prepared F&T
fan would want these odd variant editions as well.
I'd like to close by saying God bless Doug Frisby for helping _Blast
Off!_ see the light of day on CD.

He appears to have debuted in 1960 on the UK Columbia label (part of EMI,
and no relation to US Columbia, which in the UK had to be called CBS for
trademark reasons). Two albums:
33SX1193 Frank Barber Band "When the Guards are on parade"
- - a collection of songs about London
33SX1233/(stereo)SCX3310 Frank Barber Orchestra "Room 504"
- - the music of George Posford (who he? HP)
In around 1963 when Beatlemania struck, he became A&R man for
the Oriole label, doing backings for artistes like Maureen Evans. He also
released records as The Frank Barber Orchestra and also as Frank and
The Barbarians.
Oriole Records disappeared in the mid 60's after a merger, and he appears
to have returned to Columbia for a single as The Frank Barber Percussion
Ensemble, and two albums on Studio Two,
- - TWO 127 Swinging Percussion
- - TWO 203 Percussion in colour
The next reference I can find for him is a minor US chart entry in 1982
with a 'hooked on Glenn Miller' record which is, apparently, still popular
at wedding discos.
There is an excellent version of Spanish Flea by Peter Nero on his
Tribute to Herb Alpert album. This album is worth buying as they
are not simply cover versions, but differently enough arranged to
be entertaining. Wonder if a CD version is out? My vinyl copy
sticks...
Hugh.

I have this LP too and it has some great stuff on it - the version of
the Persuaders Theme is my personal favourite. It's quite
collectable - a couple of tracks appear on the second Loungecore
compilation CD.

There is also a Polydor album by The Frank Barber Percussion, "Happy
Percussion", in which he performs percussive-cheesy versions of "Big
Spender", "Mah Na Mah Na", et. al. One of those "Another Easy
Listening Album" albums, produced under the aegis of Norrie
Paramour. I think this was issued in the US as "Deep Percussion".
Where are you getting this discographic/biographic info. from, Hugh?
Do you own all these albums, do you have old catalogues, or are there
some good contemporary reference sources for finding out about guys as
obscure as Barber (but not as obscure as George Posford)?

I went to see the man in Camden Market over the weekend to see what he had
to offer. As usual he had plenty of records that would interest the list
including (with prices in pounds):
Bill Plummer and his Cosmic Brotherhood - Journey to the East (30), Anandar
Shankar (the yellow one)(40), Dick Hyman's PhantomPhingers(25), Man from
Organ (20), Age of Electronicus(50), The Weinberg Method of Non-Synthetic
Rock(30), Alan Hawkshaw's TV Themes LP with Blarney's Stoned(30), Enoch
Light's Spaced Out (30), Harry Roche Constellation, Spiral (60), Plastic
Cow goes Mooooooog (30)
His stall is stuffed with records that I seem to wake up in the middle of
the night fretting about not owning, with fevered brow and wild staring
eyes. Where does he get them all from?

the "Deep Red"(Profondo Rosso)soundtrack is as good, maybe even better.
The film itself is one of the few that still scare the shit out of me.

I just got a new version of the Demoiselles de Rochefort soundtrack by
Michel Legrand (music) and Jacques Demy (lyrics). It's fantabulous! It's
a 2-CD set that includes a lot of the dialog (important since the music
weaves in and out all the time in the movie) and it was remastered: the
sound is amazing, you think the singers are right next to you. It's a
French import on Mercury and I paid about $30 for it at Other Music. I
cannot recommend this enough.

Hi Elisabeth and listers. I too have that soundtrack and enjoy it immensely.
There also exists an all instrumental version of the soundtrack as well.
Anyone have any info regarding that. I heard it once and it was EVEN better!

The new 2-CD set includes these instrumental versions, as well as an
English cover of "Chanson des jumelles" ("A Pair of Twins"), a recording
of Michel Legrand's work sessions as he tried to come up with that song
(5 minutes of him going through various melodies, it's fascinating), and
a medley by the Michel Legrand Quintet. The booklet is excellent and has
wonderful photos. Overall it's an improvement on the original soundtrack,
though I kept my version of that one to have the "clean" songs (without
dialog cues).

Subject: (exotica) Combustible Edison 2/5/99 and "Opening Act"
Hello 41-
Just a short blurb on Combustible Edison's show the other night at Fez in New
York. The show was very good, but not much different from the last time I saw
them. No new tracks, though I was happy to hear them play a bunch of the ones
I like. It would have been nice to hear Impact, but hearing Spy vs. Spy was
nice. They closed with Miniskirt, which is always good to hear. I also taped
the show for any Combustible Edison tapers that may be lurking out there.
I also picked up their movie, Opening Act. It was described by their
merchandise man as "A surreal movie that kinda has a plot." That's about
right. I won't give it away, but it's definatley interesting and only a half
hour long. The music is all Edison, and new stuff at that. More of the
background music variety. It's worth checking out.

I know how to make a Mai Tai by heart.
My comment is that I bought a Trader Vic's Bar and Cooling Guide (which is a
1981) reprint of the original, and it DOES NOT HAVE A RECIPE FOR A MAI TAI IN
IT.
I just don't understant how a drink Vic made famous and built his resturant
empire around does not have a Mai Tai recipe in it.
This is a BOOK not a menu.
