Subject: (exotica) Heavenly F&T
Keith E. Lo Bue wrote of his perfect day:
>As I was spinning out, I fell across a Ferrante & Teicher...
>I had heard that their early stuff in the experimental sounds department

At last! A mention of F&T's Heavenly Sounds in Hi-Fi!
I've wondered about this treasure: Why didn't it crop up more often here in
raves about F&T's treated piano stuff? Blast Off! and FIreworks come up now
and then, and Ross occasionally lobbies for Dynamic Twin Pianos, a berserk
and inspired LP.
About Heavenly (ABC-Paramount, ABCS-221 and ABC-221): It's all sky songs:
Stella by Starlight, The Moon Was Yellow, Stardust (and a fab one, too) a
lackluster Over the Rainbow, a dazzling Serenade to a Star -- you get the
idea. Arrangements showcase much rumbling bassy piano and melodic lines
mixing deep and high registers. A glockenspiel (I think) flits in and out
of some arrangements along with something that could be a theremin or piano
strings scratched to tone. String strumming produces a sound similar to a
zither or Indian sarangi.
I'd wondered where Heavenly stood in F&T's career since my copy, a
remastered stereo release (?), has no date. Recently found a partial answer
in the liner notes for the mono F&T Play Light Classics, also n.d. Here's a
chronology:
Heavenly Sounds in Hi-Fi (ABC-221)
F&T with Percussion (ABC-248)
Blast Off! (ABC-285)
F&T Play Light Classics (ABC-313)
Could a treated piano fan supply the date/label for HI-FIreworks? Even
better, how's about the URL for an F&T discography? TIA.
About F&T's Light Classics: It's dull. Look for it only for the sleeve
photo of mauve rose buds, opera glasses, concert hall tickets, a strip of
yellowed lace. It seems Arthur and Louis decided, Hey, let's make some
dough, abandoning their explorations of delectibly strange beauty for more
easily digested music. Arrangements offer a few of the trills and
pyrogenics that became F&T's signature sound later on. Light Classics is
not awful but it's awfully pedestrian.
Looking skyward,
Mimi

Subject: (exotica) Rota Rant
Along with F&T, Al/Nafichera@aol.com mentioned Nino Rota -- another name
seldom seen on eXotica. Think about it: Com Ed covered a tune from 8 1/2 on
I, Swinger, Rota's theme from La Strada was a hit, and Jack and others DJs
sometimes drop Rota cuts in their sets.
I've been freakin' for Rota since 1981, when Hal Willner produced Amarcord,
a tribute LP of music from Fellini films. If you're at all Rota-curious, go
for the Fellini stuff. It's is far and away Rota's best, although I also
like the music for The Godfather 1. For Fellini, Rota spades on the irony,
burying mocking little backhanded tributes to pop music and quoting
symphonic war horses in his scores. The instrumentation is imaginative,
clever, often unexpected.
RCA released most of the classic Rota Fellini soundtracks (8 1/2, La Dolce
Vita, Amarcord) on vinyl in Europe with Italian or French liner notes and
the Italian label CAM released Fellini/Rota OSTs on vinyl and CD. Within
the past year or two Carlos Savina, the guy who conducts on most
Rota/Fellini OSTs, scored a minor hit on the classical charts with a suite
of Rota's Fellini music. I don't have the CD, so can't ID the label. A
superior intro to Rota's Fellini themes is CAM's Rota, Tutti i film di
Fellini (SAG 9053, recorded Dec. 1973). Rare, I reckon; I've seen one copy
in hundreds of hours spent rummaging through used bins. Gatefold packaging
with a silver front cover and production stills from the films on back.
Inside, fine photos of Rota and Fellini and a snap of Fellini, Rota and
Savina "in un momento della registrazione."
A last comment on Rota: someone asked about listenable covers of
Fellini/Rota music. Look for Ray Ellis and His Orchestra, La Dolce Vita and
Other Great Motion Picture Themes (RCA Victor, LSP-2410, 1961). Black,
purple and white all-type cover graphics. Two Rotas here: The La Dolce Vita
theme, done as a cha cha, and Pariami di Me in a rumba arrangement. For my
tastes, the rest of the record can be ignored. Beware, the song catalog on
the back is wrong, wrong, wrong -- not even close to the actual cuts on the
record; for god's sake, Pariami di Me and La Dolce Vita aren't even listed!
Some art director at RCA probably lost a job over that screw-up.
Tony Motolla & Orch serve up a pretty La Strada on Roman Guitar, Command RS
816 SD.
Al, I must join you in urging eXoticats to see the rereleased Nights of
Cabiria. Masina is breathtaking, veering between touching and tough. Watch
it for an unforgettable nightclub scene with a mambo singer dressed in a
brocade dinner jacket that The Millionaire would crave. "The whole world
mambos!" a secondary character yells. Isn't that a sentiment y'all can
endorse?

I've been listening to the soundtrack to Suspiria by the band Goblin
whose members are Agostino Marangolo, Claudio Simonetti, Massimo
Morante & Fabio Pignatelli.
This soundtrack is fabulous, thanks to whoever posted about it. Its
really wild, psychedelic weird with moog & splashing effects. Not much
of a description I know but its more 70s psychedelic then 60s now
sound. I was wondering if this band or its members did anything else
similiar.
I'm also listening to il Serpente by Morricone (1998 Screen Trax) and
it has its share of great moments but its not great all the way
through. There are some wild wordless ya ya vocals that just blow me
away. Its hard to imagine the total Morricone product available.
Well Mardis Gras is Feb 16, it would be great if some exotic listers
could make it.

Forgot about the great Don Tiki, we are playing the first remix song
off their single and in the same vain Swamp Fire by Martin Denny and
Patricia by Prado and Conga DE La Havana by the Lecuono Cuban Boys
and Blen Blen Blen by Cugat. . There's probably a few more I left off
but after all we play 4, 100 minute maxell cassette tapes.
What is left to make is a straight exotica tape for when we stop for a
half hour and take a break. Don Tiki, Baxter and Denny will make that
tape as will Welcome to Utopia by CE and the Karminsky Remix of Ma Na
Ma Na.

I have heard a couple of their other lps. They never quite reached the
psychotic frenzy of the "Susperia" soundtrack again, but their "Dawn of the

There are 3 Goblin compilations out in the US on DRG; they're very easy
to find. I once purchased a CD by Claudio Simonetti but found it horrible.
Interestingly enough, the new album by British Moog band Add N to X (due
out in March) sounds a lot like Goblin at times. Really amazing stuff, I
highly recommend it.

Just got those 2 Nymphomania CD's from Other Music in New York of 60's
Sex-o-rama go go sounds.
They have blue bottoms.
I can hear the vinyl on some tracks.
I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing it out that bootlegs are everywhere
these days, Vinyl/CD, whatever.
There are NO Liner Notes whatsoever and there is a little arty note inside
advertising some Sexadelic Dance Party DJ somewhere in Manhattan every
Thursday night.
Speaking of No Liner Notes, what could be worse than no liner notes ?
Not telling me WHO the artists are, as on those Easy Beat CD's out of
Germany, izzit ?
I don't think these Nymphomania CD's are from Germany.

I don't mind this too much... It depends on the price paid. Have gotten =
some phenominal sounding boots lately. All mastered off of clean vinyl. =
(I think) I actually prefer this in many cases to legit reissues where =
some tin-eared nit has remastered from tapes and messed up the original =

This brings up a Montenegro question.
I can't remember which label it is. Could be Time but I think it's
Mainstream. In any case, there are all these Montenegro records on that
label that are incredibly mediocre. I have one record on Mainstream -
"Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" - and it's got some good moments but I've
picked up a number of his records on one or another of these cheapie labels
and been very very disappointed.
What's the story with him? He's got all the soundtracks. (Is "The
Wrecking Crew" reissued?) And then there are his "pop" records with
classic moments, including his versions of "Love is blue" and "Classical
Gas".
I have a 2-record best-of compilation on RCA, "This is Hugo Montenegro" and
it's almost all great.
Then there are all these dreary generic string-laden records on whatever
that label is. What's up with that?

Subject: (exotica) The Montenegro Question
Montenegro recorded for Time between 1960 and 1063. Either Time
under-utilized him or old Hugo was still finding his voice, since the
bulk of these albums are unimaginative string arrangements. He put out a
series of four volumes of Americian Musical Theater and Great Songs from
Motion Pictures which are pretty pathetic renditions of mostly mediocre
material.
I agree with Sean that Boogie-Woogie and Bongos and Bongos and Brass are
high points in his Time career, I would also add Cha Chas for Dancing. The
rest, where you might be able to apologetically find a decent tune or
two, really aren't worth it. Save you money for the RCA recordings.
In 1965 he recorded his first album for RCA which just happened to be the
music to The Man From UNCLE. The music style changed and so did Hugo
which brings up a sort of chicken-and-egg kind of question. Did
Montenegro just go along with what his label execs told him, or did he
make a conscious move to RCA so his new hip sensibilites could flourish?
Of course, we know that RCA got some great albums out of him throught the
60's and up through the 70's.
It's funny that there's a tendency to want to like or find justification
of some artist that we like when we discover that they went through a
phase of putting out stuff we don't like. I admit that I still own some
Montenegro that I don't particularly care for but, I sometimes like to
listen to them just because it's Hugo. It's not that they are such *bad*
albums, it's just that in contrast to his great albums they don't measure
up or rather they are so stylistically different that it's hard to admit
that it's the real Montenegro. The "taste maker" in me wants to prune
these out of my collection. Ah, but the librarian in me keeps them where
they are.
Conversely, we might also decide not to like some one based upon a few
albums and miss out on recordings that are markedly better.I neglected
to pick up any Ferrante and Teicher albums for the longest time simply
because I had judged their whole carrer based on their UnitedArtists
recordings. Not until a friend gave me the Percussion album did I realize
that the ABC recordings were quite different.
Which leads to an interesting thread topic; Are there any other examples
of these "Label Jumpers"?

sorry, I forgot to include the name of the label of the "Beat Psichedelico"
comp; it's: Giallo Records Saf 028, Italy, 1998
the first volume in the series is called "Mosaico Psichedelico"
Giallo Records Saf 021
i liked that one too, and very much, but not as much as the "beat" volume,
although i also know that many a listee will prefer "Mosaico", which is
more psychploitation, louder, wilder, more exentric, more of a
"cinematrographic" sound (crime/spy jazzy), and with more electric guitars,
and lots of organ too, and with 5 tracks by one Armando Sciascia that are
really scary and probably taken from a horror movie soundtrack.

Charles Magnante was one of the leading accordianists in the US during his
lifetime. Not only did he put out a number of albums on Grand Award and
Command (Enoch Light labels), but he also was the president of some
national society of accordianists and was quite influential in promoting
the accordian as a legitimate instrument. The accordian never achieved the
status it has in Russia, but at least it was pushed higher thanks to his
efforts. I love all of his albums: he seems to concentrate on Spanish and
Italian themed material, but it is the musical or standards selections he
does I most enjoy. I don't know why the prices seem so high...I have never
bought any of his for more than a couple of bucks or seen them for more
than that.

Subject: (exotica) Christmas "Lounge" CD
I ran across a CD review for The Ultimate Lounge Christmas
which was rather curious. The singer was John Jonethis and
the label was Essential. The booklet/cover, however, was
styled like an Ultra Lounge CD (scripty writing, the colors,
bar across the top, zebra skin background).

The selection they chose to load in Real Audio was not very
exciting. It was an original by Jonethis, slow tempo (cut 5).
The review, however, indicated the rest may be okay. Anyone
heard or seen this CD?
