There is at least one other F & T prepared piano LP that I don't recall anyone
mentioning: Soundproof (Westminster WST 15011). I believe the mono version
goes by the title Soundblast! It is a must own, but unfortunately it is not
an easy find.
I also agree with Nat Kone that some of their earlier albums like Latin Pianos
which do not feature prepared piano sounds are quite good, too. I can't
handle their ultra-schmaltzy recordings but love the following:
Golden Piano Hits (WWS 8505)
The Enchanted World of Ferrante & Teicher (UAS 6375)
Pianos in Paradise (UAL 3230)
Their LP Love Themes from Cleopatra (UAL 3290) seems to alternate between good
track, bad track, good track, etc. It almost seems intentional.
I have also heard that their early xmas LP, Adventures in Carols, features
prepared piano. I have their later xmas LP, We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
It's not bad.

1/4 ounce orgeat syrup
1/4 ounce rock candy syrup
1 ounce aged Jamaican rum

My comment is that I bought a Trader Vic's Bar and Cooling Guide (which

this past weekend i found a three suns lp, dancing on a cloud. the flea
market wanted $10 bucks, is this a mamie eisenhower special or something
really great. i see on the liner notes of movin' and groovin' that it
suggests listening to this as well. is it in the same vein or that

on another note:
does anyone know much about Vic Mizzy? he is listed as the brains behind

Michele questions, as do I:
> I was disappointed in things about the A&E documentary:
1) they didnt even give Joey Bishop more than a one-line mention - if he
was a
sort-of Rat Pack member, I think they should have talked about him. Also
what
was weird was that they did not interview him for the documentary. He is
the
ONLY living member! What a mistake - Or maybe the guy is too sick to be
interviewed, who knows. Also, what about Shirley MacLean? Much has been
made
of her involvement in the rat pack, yet they didn't even mention her as a
member????
I wondered the same thing, as well as why not question living legend Lauren
Bacall? I read where Joey is just an old man content to do cross word
puzzles and not do interviews(geez, sounds like Julie London)...but he
would offer some of the best and only insight around!

I don't think so.
The IMdb list 150 credits in Rota's Composer Filmography. Many are recycled
snippets from his earlier scores. Scenes from a Mall, for instance, picked
up Amarcord and Juliet of the Spirits. But westerns? Got me. Judge for
yourself at http://us.imdb.com/search and enter Nino Rota.
For an overview of Rota's other film scores, check the 1993 CD, Nino Rota
Film Music (CAM, CVS004). DRG sold it stateside. The themes and directors
are:
Napoli milionaria De Filippo
The Glass Mountain Anton & Cass
La Dolce Vita Fellini
Sunset Sunrise Kurahara
White Nights (Le notti bianche) Visconti
War & Peace (Guerra e pace) King Vidor
Romeo & Juliet (Romeo e Giulietta) Zeffirelli
The Leopard (Il gattopardo) Visconti
Rocco & His Brothers (Rocco e i suoi fratelli) Visconti
La bisbetica domata (The Taming of the Shrew) Zeffirelli
Purple Noon (Theme from Plein Soleil) Clement
The Godfather (Il padrino) Coppola
In 94 DRG Movies released another Rota OST: Spara forte piu forte non
capisco (Shoot Louder, Louder...I Don't Understand), a de Filippo film.
Intriguing liner notes explain how this almost became a lost score.
Recommended for hard-core Rota-philes. It's not his best but makes a lot of
his classic moves: A charming Chaplinesque theme for the heroine, played by
Raquel Welch, and some delectable quotes from La dolce vita. And you can't
forget the bit played on a saw. Am pretty sure DRG is still peddling the
CD, and it seems CAM released it in Europe in 93.
Thx to all for Rota cover recs. I'd LOVE to hear Snakefinger's take on Rota
- -- same with the Three Suns. In a dash o' synchronicity, the host of a
local lounge/EZ radio show played a tasty La dolce vita theme by the
Harmonicats. Harmonicas doing a Rota tango! Maybe not as inspired as
Comelade adding toy piano to the Rota mix, but quite pleasing. The host
didn't ID the Harmonicats record. Anyone know?

I am convinced that a good boot generally sounds bettter then your
average cd. Vinyl sounds the best and the less technology you throw
at it when remastering it to cd the better. I'd rather have an
occasional pop on a good copy then the tinny muddy sounding digital
remastering jobs by the big labels. I am very surprised with the
quality of home cdrs. Its amazing that for such a low price you beat
the sound quality of lots of remastered cds.
Jack I also don't think those Nymphomanias are from Germany, I mean
the "Hexy Sexy" record label just reeks of boot smell.

Soundproof is indeed a great rarity of Ferrante & Teicher's. I feel very
lucky to own a copy and it features a hell of o lot prepared piano
effects. The track "Man from Mars" just mystifies me...
I never heard that one about Proof and Blast being mono and stereo
versions of the same album. The Westminster number on Soundproof is WP
6014 and the number I've found for Soundblast is 6041, so I've always
hoped that they were two different albums but I keep finding clues to the
contrary. On the back cover of the Research book Incredibly Strange Music
vol. 1 there's a picture of Soundblast (lower right). While the cover
photo is different than Proof the both have the sub title "the sound of
tomorrow today".
BTW the date on the back, 1956, places it between HiFireworks and the
first UA album.

I might pay $5 for this if I was feeling rich, the record was in perfect
shape, and I absoulutely needed it to fill out my Three Suns collection.
In other words save your $10.
I have a major problem with the medley. With the exception of two song
this album is all medlies. Even so this predates M&G and doesn't come
close to its greatness.
If you still want to own this, keep an eye out, you'll eventually come
across it for a lot cheaper, it's not that rare.

Oops, I forgot to post this the other day. Snakefinger's cover of "Shining

Came across this mighty fine mini-album (Bossa & Balanco with a sedilla
under the c, except not in ascii) in my local record shop the other day.
They had it listed in new arrivals as 'Ennio Morricone house remix' by
some dj i'd heard of. It appears to me to be beautiful wordless vocal
bossa nova based music recorded with a live band (balanco) rather than
samples, though otherwise quite similar to fantastic plastic machine
(though humour is not part of the intention), and does include 1
Morricone track. Anyone know anything about it? i'd thoroughly recommend
it.
also picked up the original cast soundtrack recording from the japanese
production of hair (in japanese naturally), which certainly beats it in
english. how it got here i'll never know. and a new stock hausen and
walkman split 7" 'dirty thirtysomething' that spanks brain meat and
can't been beat.

Their not, Chuck. It was confirmed to me by someone I trust beyond compare
who shall remain nameless that they are indeed made by some Euro DJ that
DJ's in Manhattan.
I mean, they included inside the front tray card a "plug" for his gig and

Originally released on Contour in 1975. I had very high expectations for
this soundtrack, after hearing the incredible and superbe title theme by
Alan Tew on "The Spond Gallery"; but this CD was a big disappointment! Not
ONE other track is even HALF as good as that title theme; it's all rather
lame background funk. Some tracks could be described as "mellow", and the
beat on many others is closer to disco than to funk. Not recommended at all!

Subject: (exotica) Strange music
A strange thing happened last night.
Being a huge fan of Julie London, I decided to tape some of her songs
for my grandmother. I selected a few from the (very fine) album 'Your
number please', and left it recording.
However, the autoreverse mechanism malfunctioned, producing an aural
oddity which belongs in a modern art show:
The song 'One for my baby' plays at a fraction of the correct speed,
and so instead of Julie's divine voice, the vocal sounds like a
dinosaur rolling around in a swamp. This continues, stretching a
three minute song out to about 15 minutes, until the recording
suddenly speeds up, leaving Julie to sing the closing bars.
Assuming my grandmother wouldn't dig it, I re-did the tape, saving the
odd version for myself.
Just wanted to share that one.

I went to the URL, which was as you described.
Y'know what I was *hoping* was that Goodnoise would be offering exclusive
tracks Rykodisc acquired with their purchase of the Hi-Fi masters that
hadn't otherwise made it onto retail, in-print CDs. Otherwise, it still
seems easier/more sensible to go to the store down the street or order
from CD-NOW or whatever to get the material on CD. It seems to make the
most sense to me for technologies like MP3, Liquid Audio, etc. as a
*great* means of keeping back-catalog recordings in print without having
to worry about manufacturing run sizes and other incidentals of marketing
reissues.
In my perfect world, NOTHING ever goes out of print,

I don't know the exact relationship between Soundblast and Soundproof. My
impression was that they were basically the same LP. I only have Soundproof
so I can't say for sure that one is a stereo and the other a mono. Can anyone
on the list with better sources than mine set the record straight?

Any Three Sun afficianado out there want to volunteer to make a little list
of the records they consider the "essential" ones?
Or even better, list the essential, semi-essential, pretty good but not
essential and "don't bother" ones.
From the records I own, I guess I'd have to categorize them into A, B and C.
"A" would be "Movin and Groovin" or on a good day "On a Magic Carpet"
(which is probably more A minus or B plus)
And "B" would be "The things I love in hi fi" (the one with the pipe organ)
and "A Swinging Thing".
And "C" would be this one I found the other day at the Goodwill,
"Slumberland" or something. The title should have warned me but the cover
was great and it was only half a buck.
Or maybe you need to add "D" material too. Then I'd put Slumberland in the
"D" and in the "C" I would put "Love in the Afternoon" and "Soft n Sweet".
Problem with the Suns is that even records like "Movin and Groovin" which
contain absolutely classic sublime cuts like "Danny's Inferno" still
contain a cut or two that you hope you never hear again.
Sometimes I think there were two bands. The Three Suns and the The Three
Evil Twins. No question which of them I preferred.

Thanks a heap for this info. guys.
I'll now have to track down a copy of "Percussion In Colour".
Once I revisit the shop I'll let you know the exact title/label of his
"Hits of 30's" type affair if they still have it.
Norrie Paramour produced "Swingin' Percussion" as well.
Interesting on the back of the album blurb Frank claims to have come up
with the idea of "The Circle of Sound" when he was writing music for a
French Television series...

List members I'm sure will *love* to know that the Portsmouth Sinfonia's
inimitable recordings have recently been reissued on CD - in Japan,

I spotted it on sale at GEMM (http://www.gemm.com/)
Not sure if this is one LP or two (I think I'm right in saying they
recorded two?).
Anyway, it's going for $29.83...

Subject: Re: (exotica) The Hanged Man
I have to say, I'm very surprised at Johan's reaction to the Hanged Man
soundtrack. This is one of my all time favourite soundtracks. The flute and
the moog, laid over the minimal funky music give a very moody and laid back
feel. There is no lame track on the whole LP and in general, it is
fantastic from start to finish. Interestingly, there is no track from this
soundtrack on the Sound Gallery compilation. Alan Tew was asked to do 'The
Detectives' theme tune for a Two Ronnies (comedy programme) sketch in the
70s. Instead of doing something original, he knocked up the Hanged Man
theme into something slightly different. The Detectives is on The Sound
Gallery, not the Hanged Man.
This soundtrack is a UK gem and is well worth having. The TV series it came
from was also excellent.

There is one thinbg that the A&E bio did make clear, and it is that if Sinatra
had not become chums with Joey Bishop he would have not gotten to where he has
today. As for Dino, the Nick Tosches bio makes quite clear than Dino was less
philandering than the other Rat Packers and he just didn't need to put up with
Sinatra's "leadership" stuff and through passive resistence he was able to
deal with it all while Sinatra respected him enough to allow him to do it
where others were rrelegated to Sinatr's social Siberia.

>>
Unlike Johan, I give this album the thumbs up.
It is one of the better '70s funk styled TV or film soundtracks of the '70s
The label that put it out, "Intoxica," also happens to be one of the top
stores for rare used vinyl in London which should clue you into its interest
value in the first place.
I don't have the album in front of me but the third or fourth track is a great
3 minute workout of the music that became popularized as the theme to "The
Peoples Court" (that enough is worth owning for!) while the rest of the music
falls into that Lalo Schiffrin/Streets Of San Francisco/'70s TV cop show
style. If that's your kind of sound it is highly reccommended.
Ashley rating 4/5
