The cartoon is "Music Land", a Disney "Silly Symphony" from the 30s.
I've never seen it (damn Disney Channel only shows crappy Kirk Cameron
sitcoms now), but here's a description from the `ook "The Art of Walt
Disney":
In this twist on the Romeo and Juliet story, the son of the King of the
Isle of Jazz falls in love with the daughter of the Queen of the Land of
Symphony. ... In this cartoon the characters speak with the voices of
musical instruments. The Land of Symphony blasts its rival with
Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, blowing holes in the rococo saxaphone
skyscrapers.
I think it is or used to be avcilable on video.

The important question is not who is the wannabe as far as TV-spy-sidekick
goes but who made better records, Noel Harrison or David McCallum? And
before you jump and choose Ilya's french horn stylings on such tunes as
"Satisfaction" and "Five O'Clock World", make sure you've heard Noel's
groovy version of the Beatles "She's a woman".

There exist a record with the soundtrack of Tron. I once had it, but
didn't like it. It was mainly orchestral music with some synth sounds
on top.
Carlos created lots of music for The Shining but only small snippets
of it were actually used in the film. (as was the case for Clockwork
Orange, but I believe the reason here was that the Clockwork Orange
score by Carlos was not finished in time.)

My brother-in-law, the design professor, freaked out when he saw all my
Enoch Light Command albums. Many of the covers were done by well-known
modernist artists of the time (he was familiar with them) like Josef
Albers (Persuasive Percussion cover and others), who was involved in the
Bauhaus movement in Germany. Fujita was another. Notice that many of the
albums had an art director! So such a book is not suprising, and
probably will be pretty cool.

I thought it was "THAT YOU __SEW REAL FINE__"
Imagine my embarrasment...On Blondie, I thought it was "Once you

I'm not going to enter into the debate, since it personally isn't all
that important to me.
But I would like to lavish praise on CE's The Impossible World - even
the two or three tracks I like less at first sound great in the
context of the entire album. I think this is the only 'new'(ie
recorded last year) record I have which I listen to repeatedly.
And if anyone wants to hear a prime example of the guitar sound which
must have influenced the millionaire, look no further than the track
'goodbye' by Julie London (from the album 'At Home', available,
coupled with the album 'round midnight' on an incredibly wonderful CD)

Subject: (exotica) More Misunderstood Lyrics
I worked in the music industry for 8 years. That was long enough. I did
the retail thing, working for one of the largest music retailers in the
country and finally got out because I couldn't take it anymore.
Needless to say, I have *all kinds* of horror stories involving lyrics and
song titles.
Favorites:
"Do you have that song 'Zed Petro' by Metallica?" after much debate that
there was no such song, the kid triumphantly returned the following day to
inform me that it was on the "black album". Sure enough, "Sad But True"
("Zed Petro") was on there.
"What is 'Cahoon' Music?" Rather curious, about this myself, I had the
woman take me to the section she was referring to. I then explained to her
what "Cajun" was.
"Do you have the new CD by 'Ninja'?" Sure enough, we found Enya in the New
Age section.
And finally.... we had a gentleman come in looking for a song called "My
Cherokee Friend." The customer was on "shore leave" from the local mental
institution. I'm not being mean, this is the truth. Once a month, all the
non-dangerous types got to go on a field trip to the mall. Anyway, "My
Cherokee Friend" was allegedly performed by a trio comprising of Elvis,
James Brown, and "Some Cherokee Guy". He then proceeded to sing this song
to me in a voice that I cannot do justice in print. We never did track it
down. He says he saw it on TV when he was a kid. SO, big question: does
anyone know what the hell he was talking about?! :)
(I'd love to find this song -not that I really think it exists- because his
voice has been haunting me since 1991).
Now I do e-mail based tech support for a large ISP. I wish I could say that
the questions I get are more intelligent, and intelligible, but they're not.
;)

Subject: (exotica) Acting gov declares "Keely Smith Day"
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- California is officially observing ``Keely
Smith Day'' under a proclamation by music buff John Burton, the Senate
leader who served as acting governor this week.
The colorful San Francisco Democrat observed on the Senate floor today that
he no longer held the office since Gov. Gray Davis had returned from his
trade trip to Mexico.
Burton noted that the sun hadn't shone since then, and that taxes hadn't
been raised on his watch.
He took advantage of his short-lived power Tuesday by issuing a
proclamation to honor Keely Smith, who Burton said ``has dazzled audiences
around the world with such hits as ''That Old Black Magic,`` ''The Song is
You,`` and ''I Wish You Love.``
Burton said he timed ``Keely Smith Day'' for her scheduled induction into
the Las Vegas Hall of Fame today.
He became acting governor when Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and Assembly
Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa joined Davis on the Mexico trip.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Herbert Klynn, an award-winning graphic designer and
artist who helped create cartoon shorts featuring Mr. Magoo and Madeline and
animated TV shows including ``The Lone Ranger,'' died Wednesday. He was 81.
Klynn's 50-year career included the creation of the innovative graphic
titles for the ``I Spy'' 1960s TV series starring Bill Cosby and Robert
Culp, and ``The Duck Factory,'' a 1984 sitcom about an animation studio that
featured Jim Carrey.
Klynn collaborated on other projects with such prominent authors as Ted
Geisel of ``Dr. Seuss'' fame and science fiction novelist Ray Bradbury.
He was honored by the International Animated Film Society with an ``Annie

*Lili St. Cyr
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lili St. Cyr, a striptease performer of the 1940s and
1950s whose act included onstage bubble baths, died Friday. She was 80.
Born Willis Marie Van Schaack, St. Cyr studied ballet and worked as a
chorus girl before making her breakthrough in vaudeville as a striptease
artist.
St. Cyr also worked briefly in films, appearing in such B movies as ``The
Naked and the Dead,'' in 1958, based on the Norman Mailer novel. Other films
included ``The Miami Story'' in 1954 with Barry Sullivan, and ``Son of

*Julius Wechter
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Julius Wechter, a marimba player with Herb Alpert's
Tijuana Brass who composed ``Spanish Flea,'' died Monday of lung cancer. He
was 63.
``Spanish Flea'' was recorded by Alpert and more than 60 others. It was
used as the theme for television's ``The Dating Game'' and has been heard on
everything from commercials to the soundtrack of ``Beverly Hills Cop II'' to
a recent episode of the TV series ``The Simpsons.''
Wechter's musical career began at age 5 when he started playing piano. He
played with small bands during college, he went on to play marimba for
Martin Denny in Hawaii for four years.
Wechter returned to Los Angeles to do studio work with such performers as
the Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher and the Righteous Brothers. That work led to a
spot in Alpert's band.
At Alpert's urging, Wechter formed the Baja Marimba Band, whose trademark
song was ``Comin' in the Back Door.'' The nine-person group recorded 18
albums in five years.

My opinion? Well you get it anyway. This has got to be the CD that was going
to be the Tiki Sampler. Maybe they would have done it slightly differently
but if they already got it in production . . . . . well, you get the picture.

Later we mix in Mucha Muchacha & Cachita by Esquivel, Miniskirt by

the Marboro theme and modern surf. There is a variety of Soca, Zouk,
Soukous, Chutney, Charanga, High Life, Norteno, Merenge, Compass all
played on a huge speaker system that sets off car alarms as we pass
by. Everyone dresses Tiki tropical with grass skirts, banana leafs &
strange exotic headpieces. We throw golden bananas that say Mondo
Kayo Carnival Club on litlle stickers. Our carnival floats have Tiki
statues on them and we sometimes carry a giant Mayan Pyramid made out
of foam rubber. Now we have a giant banana that the kids ride on.
There' 150 of us and very few know what kind of music they are
listening to. When we toast the mayor we play Quiet Villiage in the
background and call him the leader of the northernmost banana
republic. Then the Chaquita Banana Commercial kicks in. Its really
hilarious and I've been doing this for 17 years.
If anyone is going to make it down here for Mardis Gras please email
me & you're welcome to join us.
Also any suggestiions of songs to add to our tapes are welcome.
Can you imagine what New Orleanians and tourists think when they hear
Quiet Villiage moog on Mardis Gras morning at 7:45am!?
Easy listening in the Big Easy
Chuck

It isn't from France, it's from Italy, and it features all italian
60's & 70's stuff. The man behind it is Paolo Scotti, of "Easy Tempo
- - voll. 1 to 5" and "Mood Mosaic" fame. At the moment Paolo and
myself are working together on a new compilation. I'll let you know.
Ciao everybody

Fantastica # 61
title: 100% peter Thomas - identification: Sprechen sie Deutsch?
1. Peter Thomas, vocal by Uschi Glas: "Mein Wochenende"
o album "Moonflowers & Mini-skirts"
o CD, Marina, Germany, 1998 | +++++
o info: Each track (except for 1 sung by Donna Summer maybe) is a
winner, but the collection in a whole sounds a bit too repetitive,
especially compared to the 2 other Peter Thomas compilations
available.
2. Peter Thomas: "Jerry-Cotton-March"
o album "Film Musik" (Original Musik aus den Edgar Wallace und Jerry
Cotton Filmen)
o CD, Polydor 517 096, Germany, 198?, deleted | ++++
o info: Unfortunately deleted, it contains a couple of really cool
and jazzy tracks not available elsewhere.
3. LEITMOTIV: Jerry Cotton & Co.: "Dialogue & sound effects"
o album "Film Musik" (Original Musik aus den Edgar Wallace und Jerry
Cotton Filmen)
o see above mention of this record for more details.
4. Peter Thomas: "Cruising"
o soundtrack "100% Cotton" (The complete Jerry Cotton Edition)
o Double LP/Double CD, Crippled Dick Hot Wax 04366, Germany, 1998 |
+++++
o info: PROS: incredibly cool crime jazzy music. CONS: A double LP
is maybe a bit too much of it; several themes are repeated over
and over with only slight variations; a cover that looks beautiful
at first sight, but reveals the hand of a real amateur graphic
artist; and worst of all: you don't know what original film title
each tarck is taken from.
5. Peter Thomas Sound Orchester: "Andante novembra"
o album "Easy loungin'. Twenty easy listening classics"
o CD, Polydor 529 491-2, Germany, 1995 | +++++
o info: This ain't no "easy listening": this is the "hard rock" of
EZ! Loud, fast and mean, with a screaming woman to start it off
and electric bass mixed up front. "Woow-factor" 10! Tracks: Space
Patrol; Twiggy Beat; Der Hexer; Mister Unbekannt; Take It Jerry;
Like To Get To Know You; Pardon Me Mrs. Carmen; Die Gruft mit dem
Raetselschloss; Gente; Pizzicato-Leo; Mars Close Up (from the
"Raumpatrouille" soundtrack); Verraeter; Monster; Der Gorilla von
Soho; Landing On The Moon; Slimfinado; Andante Novembra; Big Boss;
The World is Gone; Till The Blue Moon.
6. Peter-Thomas-Sound-Orchester: "Bolero on the moon rocks"
o soundtrack "Raumpatrouille" (Space patrol)
o CD, Polyphon 838 227-2, Germany, 199? | +++++
o Review: http://bewoner.dma.be/Dada/critiq/T/Raumpatr.htm
7. Peter Thomas: "Im Banne des Unheimlichen: Penelope"
o album "Film Musik" (Original Musik aus den Edgar Wallace und Jerry
Cotton Filmen)
o see above
8. Peter Thomas: "Aha!"
o album "Kriminalfilmmusik"
o CD, Prudence/BSC Music 398.6533 distr. Rough Trade, Germany, 1998
| +++
o info: Music from "Der Zinker", "Die seltsame Grafin", "Der Hexer",
"Das Verratertor", "Das Geheimnis de weissen Nonnezimmer 13", "Das
Indische Tuch", "Das Ratsel der roten Orchidee", "Die weisse
Spinne". There's a lot of gentle, ultra-light cocktail music
without any surprises, nothing special really; only about half of
the tracks are worth hearing, so this one's only for Peter Thomas
completionists.
9. Peter Thomas: "Madman's terror"
o album "Kriminalfilmmusik"
o see above
10. Peter Thomas Sound Orchester: "Der Hexer"
o album "Easy loungin'. Twenty easy listening classics"
o see above
o info: (This track also appears on "FutureMuzik")
11. Peter Thomas: "French girl in Manhattan"
o soundtrack "100% Cotton" (The complete Jerry Cotton Edition)
o see above
12. Peter Thomas: "Schusse aus dem Geigenkasten Suite 4 - fragment"
o soundtrack "100% Cotton" (The complete Jerry Cotton Edition)
o see above
13. Peter Thomas: "Jumpin' Jack flash"
o compilation "The Mood Mosaic 4: Les Yper Sound!"
o Double LP/CD, YellowStone 9569, Italy, 1997 | +++++
o info: The best of the series, IMHO! A hip mix of mostly uptempo,
bright, optimistic, jazzy, funky 60's "now" EZ pop sounds with a
lot of soul, and a bit of bossa and other Latin influences here
and there. A couple of Hammond tracks, 1 "spy" track by Ken
Thorne, 2 fun tracks with nonsense lyrics: "Sorry 'bout that" and
Gary McFarland with "Bloop bleep". 4 vocal tracks, 3 of which are
mediocre, the other 18 instrumental. Featuring Nilsmen, Stan Getz,
Pete Moore, Jackie Mitoo, Clark Terry, Shirley Scott, Oliver
Nelson, Peter Thomas with "Jumpin' Jack Flash", Enoch Light with
"Bond street" from his "Sapced out" LP, Ann Margret with an
instrumental (!), Bill Plummer with another sitar track from that
elusive "Cosmic Brotherhood" LP, Don Sebesky...
14. Peter Thomas: "Gotter von fremden Sternen: Vom Vor-vorgestern zum
Uber-ubermorgen"
o soundtrack "Erinnerungen an die Zukunft" (Chariots of the Gods)
o CD, Polydor 573502, Germany, 1998 | +++
o info: Imagine Morricone's orchestral spaghetti soundtrack pieces
from "Once upon a time in the West", mixed with elements of
"Raumpatrouille", musique concrete and Elizabeth Waldo-like
primitive percussion. A very fascinating soundtrack! It's a pitty
Polygram didn't bother to remaster it and add track divisions...
The track "Gotter von fremden Sternen" (Gods from strange planets)
is also featured on the "FutureMuzik" compilation, and is probably
the best piece from the soundtrack... it certainly has the most
catchy melody.
15. Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra: "Curse of the hidden vault (Die Gruft mit
dem Ratselschloss)"
o album "FutureMuzik"
o CD, Scamp 9724, USA, 1998 | +++++
o Review:
http://bewoner.dma.be/Dada/critiq/A/PeterThomasFuturemuzik.htm
16. Peter Thomas: "Asphalt jungle"
o soundtrack "100% Cotton" (The complete Jerry Cotton Edition)
o see above
17. Peter-Thomas-Sound-Orchestra: "Valleri"
o compilation "Get Easy! vol.4: The German Pop Collection" (compiled
by DJ Maxwell)
o CD & Double LP, Motor 553 598, Germany, 1997 | ++++
o info: I liked this volume, with German EZ & Pop Tunes from the
60's and 70's, a lot better than the "French collection". A lot
depends on geographics; if you think everything French is
cool/quirky/exotic, than you'll love the French one. If you're not
sure, then go for the German. That one only has 2 lame tracks, by
Katja Ebstein, and Lilian Atterer; both very plain 60's popular
vocals; 8 other are good vocal tracks, the remaining 14 are
instromentals. All in all a very soulful and funky compilation,
with plenty of that "European" big band sound. Some highlights: --
Klaus Wunderlich's version of Mancini's "Baby elephant walk",
which is very true to the original Mancini sound and yet very
different and original -- James Last's "Aquarius" with phase
shifting all over -- Hildegarde Knef with a slow funk number; if
you like low, smokey, female vocals, then check her out --
Orchester Horst Jankowski: "Pata pata" has both whistling (in the
intro) and wordless scat "pabapaba" vocals from the swinging
Jankowski Singers -- Die Jankowski Singers have a second track,
"rocking voices", on which they sound very much like the Swingle
Singers, but with a beat. -- also 2 Peter Thomas tracks not on any
other CD (yet), and tracks by Manfred Krug, Roberto Delgado,
Charlie Antolini...
18. Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra: "The hunchback of Soho (Der Bucklige von
Soho): Shock"
o album "FutureMuzik"
o see above
19. Peter Thomas: "Brooklyn by night"
o soundtrack "100% Cotton" (The complete Jerry Cotton Edition)
o see above
20. Peter Thomas: "Mr. FBI"
o album "Film Musik" (Original Musik aus den Edgar Wallace und Jerry
Cotton Filmen)
o see above
21. Peter Thomas: "Jerry 67"
o soundtrack "100% Cotton" (The complete Jerry Cotton Edition)
o see above
22. Peter Thomas: "Milky way"
o album "Moonflowers & Mini-skirts"
o see above
23. Peter Thomas: "Final exitement"
o album "Film Musik" (Original Musik aus den Edgar Wallace und Jerry
Cotton Filmen)
o see above
24. Peter Thomas: "Sterne und raketen"
o soundtrack "Erinnerungen an die Zukunft" (Chariots of the Gods)
o see above
25. Peter-Thomas-Sound-Orchester: "Mars Close Up"
o soundtrack "Raumpatrouille" (includes 3 bonus tracks)
o CD, Bungalow BUNG 009, Germany, 1998 | +++++
o info: Organs in orbit. Bonus tracks: "Mars Close Up"; "Hedono";
"Moontown". I'm not sure myself if these 3 are really left-overs
from the original 60's soundtrack (as Bungalow claims), as they
sound much more 70's to me...
26. Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra: "The hunchback of Soho (Der Bucklige von
Soho): The reverend goes to hell"
o album "FutureMuzik"
o see above
27. Peter-Thomas-Sound-Orchester, vocal by James D. Atterly: "Shub-a-dooe"
o soundtrack "Raumpatrouille" (Space patrol)
o see above
28. Peter Thomas: "Hexer's nightclub 1"
o album "Kriminalfilmmusik"
o see above
29. Peter-Thomas-Sound-Orchester: "Malaparte sinus"
o soundtrack "Orion 2000"
o 10", Bungalow bung 008, distr. Rough Trade, Germany, 1996 | ++++
o info: "Raumpatrouille" main theme + 3 tracks that Peter Thomas
recorded in 1975 to capture the spirit of the future once again.
Even more wild and loud, with extra electric guitars, hard rockin'
drums, and electronics that at one point are almost painful. Don't
bother to try to find it, because all 3 are also featured on the
(recommended) "Moonflowers & Mini-skirts" CD.
