I always thought that THIS is the original cover and the other version, that
you used to know, with the Barock-guy standing, was the American version. I
only knew it from photos of it on later records, never found it anywhere in
Europe.
BTW: There is a really interesting and well done Wendy Carlos homepage (just
look at the fine "WENDY" background pattern!):
http://www.wendycarlos.com/index.html
(Mimi! That's one for you!)
The homepage has a discography but it doesn't become clear which the original
cover really was: The CD version has the standing guy. There seems to be a
third version with a different layout: The title is on a white field on top of
the cover.
However: The homepage also says that the scores of "Tron" and "The Shining",
that Carlos seems to be responsible for (which I didn't know), where never
published because the original master tapes had melted together. Amazing...

Jack, it may have been true that back on _I, Swinger_ what was most
interesting was the way they recreated a "sound" from those earlier sources.
But when it comes to _The Impossible World_, I just don't see how you can
say that. It's obviously "Lounge-influenced" (sorta like the Beatles were
Chuck-Berry-influenced), but compositionally, and in its sound textures
it's an original.
If "Song of the Space Siren" is supposedly imitating some earlier artist,
who would that be?

No more so than Led Zeppelin didn't create anything new or original.
Everyone borrows from the past and puts their own spin on it. You can
trace influences, but CE is certainly different from Esquivel or Enoch
Light, even though they have similar ideas.
For one thing, I don't Esquivel ever sung in Esperanto. (Still can't get

I guess I know what you mean but it seems a little strange to me, to
criticize someone for repeating samples. What's the purpose of sampling
anyway?
There is no single purpose. It's an individual thing. Sometimes the artist
uses samples in the same fun "spot-the-sample" way that some of us like
listening to them. But sometimes samples are used as "instruments".
Repeating a sample can be like repeating a bass line or repeating a guitar
riff. They're not interested in finding endless samples for your
enjoyment. They're just constructing a piece of music.
And then there's sampling which purposely "pushes the envelope" on
repetition. Repetition is what the music is about.
And by the way, I could say the same thing for "visual sampling" as used in
films and art in general.
It's true that some samples seem to repeat a lot. It doesn't always work
for me but then I could say the same thing for almost everything.

Up until I started buying this stuff, for me Bobby Rosengarden was Dick
Cavett's bandleader on his old talk show. As a kid that show was the
height of wit and sophistication but when I see samples of it now, I
realize that it was kind of a strange show and that Dick was a kiss-ass
effete snob. (But so am I???)
I love the way all kinds of musicians had very limited frames of reference
for me until I started seeing their names on these records. "Oh him? He
was in Merv's band. That guy there? Isn't that Happy Kyne?"
I'm sure others will recommend all Bobby's records on Command but I'll just
put in one more vote for the "Bob and Phil" record with "Blowin in the
wind" on it.
>>Now the label...this is the first record on the Time label that I have

I think they're generally bad but then again, I don't think I would have
recommended the Spanish Guitar one that you like. I almost always buy them
and I'm almost always disappointed. The two that I've kept are "Gershwin
Guitars" and "Flutes and Percussion".
If they have huge string sections listed on the back, I occasionally pass
them up.

I only listened to that CD in the record store so maybe my hearing was
impaired but I was very very disappointed.
You read the liner notes and the producers tell this whole story about
loving Enoch Light and Command and then you hear their tribute and...
It's just a total disconnect.
I'm not sure I blame them though. It's just as likely that the musicians
themselves were unwilling - or incapable - not only of "reproducing" that
sound but of doing anything that could be considered a tribute to that sound.
On the other hand, if it was easy to reproduce that sound and that
sensibility, then those original records wouldn't be as unique as they are.

Well I did stop short of screaming "sell out!". But narrating PBS films
and providing music for that particular TV guide awards show are quite
different.
I understand the concept of making a living - unfortunately that's all I
understand is the concept - but it's one thing to provide background music
for a film and another thing to support the cheesy sausage-making
mediocrity that you once implicitly railed against in your own music.

"Ha!" Says I, positive that such a lame lyric would never be offered by =

Subject: (exotica) Andy's 15 minutes!
my wife recently did the CD design for some Andy Williams reissues , so I
decided to spend some time (the dinner hour) and reacquaint myself with his
music. the thrift shops are usually swimming with Andy black plastic, but I
had managed to avoid it so far. For any DJ's and "now-sound" fans, here are
some of the highlights, IMHO. a swingin' vocal version of Sid Ramin's "Music
to Watch Girls By", a suprisingly good version of "God Only Knows", better
than David Bowie's. , a rockin' "Windy", an ersatz-Pet Sounds song by Bill
House called "Our Last Goodbye" , and an incredibly strange version of
"Spooky", in its' own way as good as Lydia Lunch' .what possessed Andy to sing
that one? the 60's did strange things to people. most of the rest is well
- --ANDY. Inoffensive, but not exactly booty-shakin'. Now Claudine Longet !

Subject: (exotica) Dimitri/samples & lounge book
I think an artist can get a lot more "mileage" out of musical (non-verbal)
samples in an otherwise instrumental song than with verbal samples, because
the verbal too easily becomes a focal point.
I personally don't care for the "Very Stylish Girl" track, regardless of
where I've heard it (home, car, gym), because the samples are repeated so
often, but I do think it would be a different story if I didn't speak
English (and thus the samples were just sound, not words I understood).
It would also be a different story if Dimitri did something to alter the
samples over the course of the song, such as speeding them up, slowing them
down, playing them backwards, or distorting them somehow. Actually, it
would be a perfectly acceptible song without the samples, for that matter.
In another matter, has anyone seen that "exotica" book that was supposed to
come out in early 1999, the name of which was "Exotiquarium" or something
very close to the name of Johan's website? It was mentioned on the list
something like six months ago and sounded like it might be promising.

Yea, I agree that sometimes peoples points of reference are a bit
anachronistic but, it's obvious that their statements are based on the
chronology of their listening experience not the actual chronology of the
music. It's such a common blunder that it's entirely excusable in
ordinary conversation. How or why you jump to the following conclusion I
don't know.
>IMO, CE hasn't created anything new or original and I (just might) bet
>dollars to donuts, Cleve won't have any problem whatsoever with this

Jack, I think you enjoy provoking response;)
If you want to say this, which in essence places the "originality" on the
influential material, then you would have to logically conclude that
there is'nt much originality period. Everyone if influenced by some
predecessor.
My own take on CE's recent recordings is that there is more of an
influence from club music and ambient rock than from our sacred icons of
exotica.

Can't argue with that! But, I have to say that I've enjoyed the sampling
used in many musical genres, from rap/hiphop (you name it, but for my
tastes I think "Welcome to the Terrordome" by Public Enemy is GREAT and
uses sampling well), experimental (like "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" by
Byrne/Eno), Minimalist/Classical (like "Different Trains" by Reich),
pop/triphop (like Portushead, Skylab, Beck), Worldbeat disco gregorian
chant mutations, etc., etc., and I've enjoyed sampling in these and other
multiple genres when it was well done, so I don't think that my tastes are
TOO limited, mind ya.' And, here's the punchline..... 90% is way more
slick than dimitri. Listening to his samples is like listening to water drip.
Sorry, just an honest difference of opinion. Time for us all to move on.

The song is basically the opening bars to the Theme from "Girl From
U.N.C.L.E." starring Stephanie Powers and Noel Harrison as the Ilya Kuriakin
wannabe. The theme itself is worth the price of the album "soundtrack" which I
last saw priced to stay at 30 Yankee Dolla. I have a mono copy and everything
on it is excellent

i have been reading this cat fight, and too much amusement.
but in the words of the SPROCKETS host-"it has become tiresome!"
BUT while i am at it i will put in my pennies...
i am from both sides of this fence.
i am a big sample fan, i have been "sampling musician" for 7 years now.
the ENO/Byrne lp was a big influence on me, i still spin cuts from it.
as well were Public Enemy/Beastie Boys...Beck and Tipsy have pricked my
ears up again over the last few years when it comes to the use of samples.
(Beastie Boys and Beck ie. i should say the Dust Brothers)
in the electronica/club scene to which i would say i am a part as well, i
enjoy Dimitri very much, and spin his tunes. i think they are very
entertaining. but i do not think he has made a mark in the history of
sampling. from the musical perspective this list is coming from, it seems
he is gonna have to think a bit harder to win more of us over.
and i hope he does!
how did all this get started anyway...
oh yeah, that damn volvo commercial...

I will shut up now and go read some more Mondegreens!

A reliable source has quoted no less an exotica role model than Esquivel as
saying, when asked, what he would be presenting musically in today's
environment, "Electronica," he replied. That said, I think that CE has not
only reacquainted listeners with past influences--especially with their first
TWO albums-- but has seized the gauntlet and pointed forward, with respect
given to exotica roots, in a way that NO OTHER PLAYING AGGREGATION has come
close to. C'mon Jack ! Who is working harder to create new sounds? I don't
create (yet) but I daresay that it is not an easy undertaking. If you REALLY
are dissatisfied with what you hear, you too can learn to create, and offer
your own take on what NOW should sound like...Jimmy Botticelli

week! We've struck a nice production deal with a studio here in Boston,
Soundworks, where Combustible Edison recorded their fist two albums and
mixed FOUR ROOMS. AstroSlut and Soundworks will have our CDs available,
uh, when I announce they are(should be a few
months.) They will be on a web site called CD Alley, and on ours, when we
get one!
