I will get some more insight into Mitch Miller, as Quinn Martian's Earth
Father used to sing with him...but that aside, I do have a beef besides the
corn that Mr. Miller had to offer. *He* was the A&R rep for Columbia, who
said that Johnny Mathis(whom I dearly love) should switch from jazz singing
to pop. Have any of you ever heard that first (or extremely early) Johnny
album where he sings jazz standards and the likes of Gil Evans arrange? I
know some people are snickering at this point, but that is ONE GORGEOUS
RECORD! Had Johnny Mathis been a jazz singer, or made more jazz records
(like some of the fabu' Tony Bennet jazz), the world may be
different...perhaps more of an ozone layer, or something. Worse yet, there
were more jazz cuts left off that Mathis, and the master of those were
destroyed early on. Mitch Miller probably needed more tape...grrrrr...
Second: A few years ago, I tried unsuccessfully through Tower Records and
HMV to order Elisabeth Waldo, who's CD stuff is/was on GNP-Crescendo. I
did a web search yesterday, and couldn't find those(admittedly, it wasn't
exhaustive.) Is that stuff still out? I have RHEALM OF THE INCAS on
vinyl(!!), so I don't need that one...
Sing along with Jane Fondle...

Jane,
Please pass the along the following in its entirety:
My father was a session singer who sang with a variety of people, ie Mitch
Miller this day, Gordon Jenkins that day, commercials the next day, Dave
Lambert the next... the contractor would call and he'd show up at the
session.
I can't offer you much insight into Mitch; My dad would show up at the
studio, sing his part, and go home.
The only thing he did say (repeatedly) was how much of a joke he and the
singers thought Mitch Miller's music was, and how his huge popularity
astounded everyone involved.
On a related note, my mother was also a session singer, and she sometimes
did sessions with the Ray Charles Singers. She said the stock joke among
the singers was that if someone said they were doing a Ray Charles session,
the response was, "Which one? The blind one or the deaf one?

Hey,
I know we went over this about a year ago, but I was wondering:
What's the best way to fill out a US-to-foreign customs form such that the
person on he receiving end pays the least amount of duty?
Unless asked to be insured, I always mark the little green Customs tag as a
GIFT and at $10, unless asked otherwise.
The BIG GIANT WHITE Customs slip are usually for MUCH LARGER and HEAVIER
(over 4 lbs) packages and still I write a very small minimal amount as far
as "value" goes
Always mark as a Gift and a small amount of value
A CD in the jewel case, weighs in at about 5.5 oz max in the hard cardboard
mailer, but that's just mine:) I think that's about as heavy as it can get
Hope this helps:-)

Its cool but somehow misses the mark. Now sound with an overall lame edge
that has kept it firmly on the shelf with other Italian compilations and
reissues. I don't understand this because theoretically it should be
excellent. Its just that every time I listen, I feel let down. Io Maria,
Arriva la Bomba, Today's Sound, Barretta 70, thingummy whatsit 3000, White
Angel/Black Angel, etc etc. all seem to fall short of the mark somehow. The
only Italian reissues I feel strongly about are the two Duke of Burlington
LPs - Pressed Piano and Revolution in Sound , which I love. Would anybody
like to rekindle my interest in Italian reissues/compilations? Mirageman?
other Italian library reissues, soundtracks etc etc?

Subject: (exotica) Bryn "Muslimgauze" Jones obit
Bryn Jones, Pro-Palestinian Music Innovator, Dies at 38
By NEIL STRAUSS (NYTimes)
Bryn Jones, who recorded dozens of CDs of experimental music under the name
Muslimgauze, died on Jan. 14 in Manchester, England. He was 38.
The cause was pneumonia derived from a rare fungal infection in his
bloodstream, said Geert-Jan Hobijn, who released Jones' music on his Dutch
record label, Staalplaat.
Muslimgauze occupied a strange place in the musical world. He was a
powerful, prolific innovator, releasing albums that were alternately
beautiful and visceral, full of ambient electronics, polyrhythmic drumming
and all kinds of voices and sound effects. The recordings earned him a
devoted following in underground, experimental and industrial music circles
worldwide.
But the albums' liner notes and titles were dogmatically pro-Palestinian, a
rarity among Western musicians in general but especially unusual in one from
Manchester who was not Muslim and had never visited the Middle East. Some
said Jones was aiming for shock value, but those who knew him described him
as a shy, mysterious man who was serious in his political beliefs and never
wavered from his commitment to music.
He began making music in 1982, Jones said, as a response to Israel's
invasion of Lebanon. Each album was inspired by a political event, from
massacres to peace accords. In the notes to albums like "United States of
Islam," Jones wrote that "support for the PLO has been a source of influence
upon the music of Muslimgauze."
Jones recorded 92 albums with titles like "Hamas Arc" and "Vote Hezbollah,"
references to militant Islamic groups. He released some music only on DAT
tapes and one album packaged with table tennis paddles (a limited edition of
500, dedicated to the Iranian female Olympic table tennis team), and he was
known for his provocative artwork.
The cover of an album from 1993 featured a close-up of Yasser Arafat and the
Israeli prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, clasping hands after their historic
peace accord with the album title "Betrayal," emblazoned on Arafat's hand.
As his career progressed, Jones became more prolific, sending his record
label tapes for one album a week.
Hobijn said he had enough material to release Muslimgauze albums five more
years.

Dimitri From Paris: "Sacrebleu" appeared on Atlantic 83081, USA, in 1998.
Not only the cover is different from the French issue; missing are: "La
rythme et la cadence", "Free ton style", the mystery bonus track based upon
Mancini's "Lujon", and a short dialogue fragment "M=E9lancholique? Mon cu".
"Dirty Larry" appears in a totally different and longer "Crue-L Grand
Orchestra Remix" (8:04) by enji Takimi; the French version of this track
has a techno beat, while this remix is much more gentle on my nerves, morfe
"loungey". Extra tracks not found on the French issue are: "Love love mode"
(7:05), and another bonus mystery track that I called "Love love love"
(4:19). The track "Epilogue" is not mentioned on the track list, but it is
found after track 18.
pffff. it took me half an hour to find this out.

Agreed on the lunchbag-letdown character of so many of these
Italian reissues. Who ever thought we'd be so interested in early
1970s Italian jazz-funk, and who ever thought so much of it would
be reissued in lovingly packaged reissues? I'm sure this is a randomly-
generated alternative universe which branched off the main one a couple of
years ago.

The one that kicks my ass is "Lesiman - The Future Sound of Lesiman." This
stuff is really great. Some of the songs are really sparse, just single-not
piano over a subdued but infectious beat. 2 Lps of fantastic piano-centric
greatness.
I haven't picked up too many of these reissues, but even without
comparisons, I
play Lesiman a lot.

Yep -
The three EPs (10-inch) records all had 6 songs on them. They were also
released as sets of 78s (really beautiful to see the packaging of them as a
book of 78s) and sets of 45s. Then later, Music out of the Moon and Music For
Peace of Mind were released as a Capitol 2 EPs on one LP reissue.
I haven't seen the box set so can't comment on the number of songs there.

This one is a must have! It's VERY expensive but IMHO, woth the cost
I just wish someone could locate a copy of the the A&C CD Rom which
I've never been able to track down. Can anyone help?
Two more things:
Jill says customs wises up to you if you receive enough packages
labelled "gift" or with low prices and charge duty/taxes. Is Scotland
really that small a place or should I be worrying that Canada Customs
has a file on me!!! This country has a nasty reputation, along with the
UK for being very heavy handed with videos. I figured they must have a
file on me after I ordered a video of Hans Jurgen Syberberg's "Our
Hitler" which was opened and inspected but deemed inoffensive enough
to send through. Should I have reason to be nervous now?
Some advice for Nat:
I think you should take a break from making tapes and get out a bit more
(aside... Will, we need to get him out of Toronto for a visit - the snow's
getting to him) as you're sounding a bit desperate in your last post.
For all those lucky enough to have received one of Nat's tape compilations,
they're top notch and as you can see he takes his work very seriously!
I've said too much already...

Subject: Re: (exotica) UL Peeves/Italian reissues
What "peeves" me about the UL series is that there is not one single CD in the
bunch that is good all the way through. Each one has only a handful (or less)
good cuts, and the rest - yuck! I know they would sell less, and be harder to
advertise, but I would really like to see the original complete LPs reissued.
Example: One of the UL series has a cover version of "Our Man Flint" by
Elliott Fisher. Pretty much the rest of that CD is a bore. However, I have
the LP that track was taken from and it is great from start to finish.
I thing most lounge comps are a waste when I can get the complete albums if I
search enough.
There is only one lounge comp I can heartily recommend as every track being
good: "Cocktail Mix Vol. 1: Bachelor In Paradise".
As far as Italian reissues go, I agree the comps of 1970s stuff are all pretty
lame. However, there are lots of great 1960s full length soundtracks being
reissued. One's from a few years ago generally have poor sound --- but, the
more recent releases not only have better fidelity, but many have 2 or 3
complete OSTs on one disc. These discs are fairly cheap in Italy. In the US
(and especially on the web) they can be quite costly. Search out a good
dealer who will not rip you off. These things really should only cost $10 -
$14 bucks but some people are making a killing on them. If you are unfamiliar
with this genre get a few samplers first like "My Delicious Spaghetti Western"
or the great Rhino issue "A Fistful Of Film Music".
Best wishes to all,

Are you kidding? What's your definition of "good all the way through"? Does
each and every song have to be in your top 10 to qualify as good?
The following UL comps are "great", IMHO. Does that mean I LOVE and TREASURE
every single track? No! But I wouldn't call them not "good" just because some of
the material only rates a B instead of an A.
Mondo Exotica (which tracks are bad here?)
The Crime Scence
Wild Cool & Swingin (I and II)
Mondo Hollywood

I'll leave as soon as I finish these last few tapes. I promise! I'm
working on something here. It's a secret but all I can tell you is that it
hinges on my theory that the Fifth Dimension did the definitive version of
"Sunshine of your love".

So annoying.
Once I complete the set, I'm gonna digitally separate 'em and cut 'em back
on to CD.
Well, I'm thinking about it anyway.
Anyone else like the word "peeve"? >>
I sorta see the pro's and con's with this practice. In one case they alter
the original song. In another case they give you more music.
So why didn't they just give you an extra track???? Once they commited to the
18 tracks per CD they were stuck. Of course until they discovered the "Bonus
Cuts". After that I think the just kept merging a couple of songs per CD to
be consistant with the earlier CD's in the series.
Just a thought.

As I recall, "The Hellstrom Chronicle" is a documentary about the
insect world which won an Academy Award as Best Documentary in '71 or
'72. Saw it years ago and don't remember much except the incredible
micro-photography. Gets two-and-a-half stars in Leonard Maltin's
Movie & Video Guide.
For an interesting (mostly negative) perspective on Mitch Miller,
check out Donald Clarke's book "The Rise and Fall of Popular Music"
(St. Martin's, 1995). A terrific book, by the way!!

I recently picked up "Suono Libero, Volume 2, parts 1 and 2," which is to
say I ponied up for two double LPs which claim to be "a trip through obscure
70s jazz funk tracks from Italian music library" (sic). That's 4 records in
2 packages from the Irma La Douce label.
Part 1 lives up to the claim with a lot of funky cop/action-type wa-wa
grooves. Part 2 includes more 60s music: exotica/E-Z and just plain
weirdness. Of course, I could thin out the best tracks to come up with
maybe 2 sides of a single LP, but I'll hang onto the whole collection to
have them. (Mixing these is problematic if you want to remember to play
Track 3 from Side B off of Part 2 followed by Track 1 from Side C off of
Part 1...)
I also previewed the Stroboscopica vol.. 2 compilation--but passed on it as
it doesn't come close to volume 1 for coolness.

LADISLAW STAREWICZ
Ladislaw Starewicz was one of the earliest, most unique and neglected
pioneers of stop-action animation. Sophisticated even by today's
standards, the films of Starewicz are bizarre, yet beautiful. His
animated insects and animals (especially frogs, dogs and foxes) are
charming enough for children, though his grotesque images and satire
are best appreciated by adults.
Starewicz (b. Vilno, Poland, August 8, 1882) began producing short
documentaries in Moscow around 1910. A childhood passion for
entomology led him to experiment with stop-action films using dead
beetles, which he articulated by wiring the legs to the thorax with
sealing wax. He produced dozens of works during this period, including
Insects Aviation Week (1912), Four Devils (1913), and Voyage to the
Moon (1913).=20
He fled Russia after the Revolution, arriving in Paris around 1920. He
settled in a villa in Fontenay-sous-Bois, where he produced surreal,
lyrical animation. With great patience and attention to detail, he
wrote or adapted the stories; designed and built the puppets, sets and
costumes; articulated every movement; and shot each still
frame-by-frame. Fiercely independent, Starewicz rejected lucrative
offers from American animation studios, rather than relinquish
creative control.
Among his other acclaimed works are Tale of the Fox, Love in Black and
White, Voice of the Nightingale, The Magic Clock, and Nose to the
Wind. Upon his death in 1965, he left an unfinished work, Like Dog & Cat.
BRIAN DEWAN
Brian Dewan plays a home-built electric zither, adapted autoharp,
organ, and various antiquated string and keyboard instruments. He is a
composer and musicologist, specializing in obscure, topical folk
songs. He was an original member of the Blue Man Group music ensemble,
composing themes for their long-running theatrical show.
About Dewan's 1994 album, Tells The Story (Bar/None), People magazine
noted, "Dewan comes off sounding like a hybrid of Burl Ives and Edgar
Allan Poe. His songs are macabre tales that unspool like silent
movies, full of dark images and wry satire."
Dewan has released two CDs through the Hello Recording Club. He has
toured and recorded with They Might Be Giants, and in 1991 toured with
David Byrne's orchestral production, The Forest. In his basement
workshop, Dewan custom-crafts one-of-a-kind furniture, and he has
designed album covers for David Byrne (Uh-Oh) and They Might Be Giants
(Lincoln). His second album, The Operating Theatre, was recently complete=
