I finally tracked down the French import, after being totally
disappointed by the domestic one. I don't know why they decided to make
the changes to the CD that they did - probably to appeal to the "dance"
crowd. Too bad...
As for the double CD, I've never seen it - it doesn't sound too
interesting, but where did you find it, Will?

Sorry ... I kind of mixed up experimental musicans... The CDRom I'm
thinking of is called "Ventian Deer" and it's by Stock Hausen &
Walkman not Arling & Cameron. Both are favourites so... .Still
interested in scoring a copy though if anyone has any info.
On a less exotic and more serious note, I was happy to hear there are
more Muslimgauze fans out there. I've known about Muslimgauze since
the early days when he went under the name of EG Oblique Graph and
made great efforts to seek out a lot of the early vinyl releases. I
have to admit I had to give up a long time ago on keeping up with new
releases because there were simply too many... but anyone who gets to
Amsterdam ought to check out Staalplaat's store which along with
Gelbe Musik in Berlin and Odd Size in Paris, are three places anyone
interested in expermental music could spend days in... I know I
sure did did! Missed out on Dragnet in Aachen, Belgium but we also
hit Cologne & Dusseldorf on a weekend and those damned German
restricted business hours cost me dearly... but there were other
things there that more than made up for this. I think I digress...

Subject: (exotica) Ava/Choreo
I bought my second album from the Ava / Choreo label yesterday and wonder
about
its "split" personality. The first album I bought that was released by
this Hollywood based company featured Elmer Bernstein penned music
conducted by Bernstein himself. The notes mentioned it was a Choreo
release, but the album cover said Ava was the company.
This latest one was Bossa Nova Goes To The Movies, Harry Betts with the
Bill Brown Singers, A 14. On the record label itself as well on the front
and back covers a sticker covers up the previous record information with
the Ava logo and name. However, the notes and the spine still say Choreo.
Anybody have other albums on this label? What is the deal with the name
change? I often think its because someone brought a lawsuit. However, it
could also be that they discovered that the word Choreo means crappy in
Upper Slobovia. Or the Madison Avenue types thought that Ava was a more
sexy label name than Choreo. Or, perhaps, the President of the company
tried to convince a woman named Ava to dally a bit longer with him by
changing the name of the company. Your factual information...or your
completely inventive reason is welcomed!
This particular album uses mostly wordless vocals with some Les Baxter-like
exotic touches, but nothing to get all excited about, either. A previous
owner of the album knew something and added to the mostly vague liner
notes: Betts was a trombonist and arranger with Stan Kenton. Also playing
in his orchestra were Bud Shank and Jack Sheldon. I wonder how the
inscriber knew...there is nothing to confirm this on the album at all.
This album was supposed to come with an instruction sheet of "How to Dance
The Bossa Nova." No such luck.

No, this is not about where I get my records from. This is about only one
record, one I don't have.
However, I got whiff of it today from a compilation album on Capitol. Ever
heard this album by Jack Fascinato, "Music from a Surplus Store" ST 1225?
Volume 3 of What's New? on Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo has "Oily Boid"
from that album. The song is basically a duet of trumpet and oil cans
(mostly trumpet with accents by stereo separated oil cans). The preview
notes say the album also features a washboard, helical springs, an electric
motor, a set of gas pipes and such. Not as good as Dean Elliot, if "Oily
Boid" is any indication, but still provocative.
Looks like another album I must find before I die.

I have a Harry Betts record on 20th Century Fox Records called "Fabulous
Film Themes" which includes some of the usual suspects like "Alfie",
"Lara's Theme" and "Theme from the Bible".
But it also has the theme from "Modesty Blaise" and best of all, the theme
song from a totally unknown film, to me, called "Way way out".
That's a classic and totally lives up to its title.
Jack Sheldon and Sonny Criss are among the musicians on the record.
I got the feeling you're more interested in that label you were discussing
than in Mr.Betts but here's one intriguing tidbit.
He arranged the music for a film called "A Swinging Summer" which featured
The Righteous Brothers and Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Sounds swinging!
I virtually never read liner notes unless someone make a reference to the
record on this list. If I hadn't read these liner notes I would have
missed out on this piece of sage advice:
"For the neophyte in the music business he thinks that all ambitious people
in this field should have another profession to fall back on - the field is
highly competitive. Too many start with high hopes only to fall by the
way-side, disillusioned and heartbroken. Much good talent goes
unrecognized, luck helps but it takes really big talent to make the grade".
Some end up heartbroken and still others end up parking cars and pumping gas.

I saw this film on some cable station last week - it stars Jerry Lewis,
Connie Stevens, Dick Shawn and Anita Ekberg. It was one of those 'naughty'
60's movies, with Jerry and Connie pretending to be married so they could
go live on the moon. They got together with the Russians already living on
the there, and get hammered drinking a Tang-like vodka drink. It wasn't
really funny, but it was certainly very curious. The score was by Lalo
Schiffrin - - the title track that appears on the Betts album is done in
the film by Gary Lewis & The Playboys. Betts' version is better. I'm sure
the G-Lewis version was the b-side of some 45. I know I'm looking for it
anyway............

I agree with what you're saying here, and I would add Camille 2000 and
Erotica Italia as two that tend to stay on the shelf. But I do think
the two Mirageman albums are excellent. The track "Thunder" is one of
the most outstanding "10 star" pieces of music ever; the combination
of low, low, low piano notes, funky distorto-guitar and insane flute
takes it streets ahead. (There are some lame tracks, but they are
massively outweighed).

Nat Kone wrote about making compilations of "now sounds" tunes and how
they've become the focus of his collecting. I have to confess to a similar
addiction. I started about two years ago, inspired by Michel Legrand's
"Plays for Dancers," which includes such string-laden, big beat, loopy
chorus-filled gems as "Come Ray or Come Charles" and "Digue-Ding-Ding."
I commented to someone recently that the bug has driven me to put a
subsequent 8 such compilations together. Then I checked this morning:
it's an even dozen! For those who wish to examine the evidence for
themselves, they're listed at:

The changes were very likely due to sample clearance problems. As for the
"dance crowd" comment. Dimitri's main style is house music. He is one of the
most in demand house remixers and whenever he DJ's he rarely plays anything

I have Elmer Bernstein's "Walk on the Wild Side" soundtrack on Choreo.
Here is a secret joke that some of my family has about Bernstein. My
brother became quite convinced that he died in the seventies. Nothing
would shake him of this. Animal House soundtrack, composed by Elmer
Bernstein? "They're using old tapes", he would insist. More films with
his name came out, he was still unmoved. One day in a Tower Records store,
I saw him in the soundtrack section, smiling weakly.
He showed me the "Heavy Metal" soundtrack and the back cover photo is
Bernstein conducting in a "Heavy Metal" t-shirt!
My brother is a brilliant man with this occasional blind spot. Therefore,
if he tells me someone has passed, I will ask him if they really have died,
or merely are suffering from "Elmer Bernstein's Syndrome".
Perhaps I can convince Lou Smith to mail him :^)

All cd's are about 18 minutes long. No bonus-tracks. The cd's might be
short, but it's great to see them in their original covers.

Jazz Music With An Eastern Touch
This site provides a comprehensive guide to jazz music which contains
elements of classical Indian music. In the 1960s classical Indian music
found its way into mainstream Western music, when The Beatles' George
Harrison popularized the sitar.
Since then, the influence of classical Indian music has been felt in rock
and roll, jazz, and beyond. The list is alphabetical, the contents are
concise and the result of much discussion by jazz enthusiasts.

that's about the only reaction i get when someone writes such
things. (don't take this personally, P.!)
ONLY $1.50, and you're calling it "such expensive chances"
and ONLY a dozen albums or so. $18, that's the price of 1
(ONE) CD over here!
;-) jeeeeeeeeeeeeesus, unbelievable; you really should come
and live in europe for a year or so.

Subject: (exotica) Mitch Miller vortex, kiddie records
Say Jane, did Quinn Martian's earth father happen to work on "Black Bottom"
(one of the scariest tracks I've ever heard)? It's on "Everybody Sing Along
With Mitch", formerly titled "Rhythm Sing-Along With Mitch". It's a vortex
of chipper whiteness carrying uncomfortable echoes of minstrel shows, for
me at least. Also frightening is the chorus, where the drill-team precise
male singers sing this line of:
"Black Bottom! Black Bottom! Black Bottom! Black Bottom!"
Going higher and higher -- and they're not shifting into falsetto -- and
it's getting impossibly high -- and I'm just expecting vocal chords to
begin rupturing any moment! This track frightens me in so many ways. So if
Quinn's father was involved in that session -- and if he has any reports of
casualties caused by that chorus, that would be interesting to hear.
Also, with Miller's heavy involvement in the Golden Records kiddie line,
I'm curious if he (Martian, Sr.) worked on any of that material.
More generally, I (and some friends) have long wondered about the people
who worked on kiddie records. Were they specialists? Or were they session
players/singers for whom it was just another gig between commercial jingles
and grownup stuff?
And I'm curious about Anne Lloyd, who sang a lot of lead vocals on Golden
Records. I'm partial to her almost sultry (but not quite hot enough) "When
The Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along". Does anyone know anything
about her? Did she do any "grownup" records, or just kid's stuff? Thanks.

Br. Cleve and I heard Dimitri spin here in Boston last summer and it sounded
mostly like heavy funk as opposed to house. Heavy beat, lots of yelps and
vocal pieces spliced onto the rhythm, but not that 128-140 BPM music I think
of as house. Jimmy Botticelli. Maybe its house he plays in Europe, I don't
know.......

For those who don't know, I dig record labels and some of peeked at the new
stuff already, but I NOW have my first mini-interview on the site (about
the Martian Hop), which I am pretty happy about! You can visit my page in
one of two ways; for the full experience, you can start at
http://hagar.home.mindspring.com/ (read carefully all who start here!),
however, some may prefer to skip that and go right to
http://hagar.home.mindspring.com/main.html .
My site does not lean toward any type of music because no one told me I had
to pick! I hope there is something for everyone.
I am only posting this semi-non-topic (yeah, it's a word! :^) stuff once,
so I apologize in advance to anyone that gets perturbed about this type of
post.

I just got the new compilation Songs From The Jet Set, volume 2, and
there are many covers I can't place. "Forget That Girl" for instance,
credited to Douglas Fathing Hatlelid (from a movie? publishing is by
Screen Gems/Columbia Music), or "La De Da", credited to
Goldenberg-Kasha-Gimbel (published by Hawaiian Music).
Thanks for the help.

I know that as a Monkees song. It is on the Headquarters album and that is
producer/sideman Chip Douglas' real name.

Subject: Re: (exotica) "Now Sounds" Tape Compilations
Speaking of Now Sound stuff, i just HAVE to share this.....
a few days ago i found a record which was intended for Ford Dealers to
play in their showrooms in Oct 1968........ the promo campaign was
called "The Going Thing," and basically it was a very NOW Sound campaign
pitching their groovy new line of cars to the jet setters..........
anyway, in between the pitchman speeches, the music is a goulash of
Beatles, Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendes, Folk songs and even SITAR POP!!!
Mostly they sing standard songs with new words........ only the words
usually don't have anything to do with Ford per se- they're just meant
to be funny/entertaining/"hip."
The best thing is their rendition of "Tijuana Taxi-" they came up with
these AMAZING lyrics about Herb Alpert!! My fave line is:
"Herbie Alpert/Where did you vanish?/You were Jewish/But now you're
Spanish/Tell us why you/Never changed your name!"
Coming in a close 2nd is the "Torino Bossa Nova!" It reminds me of that
new Volvo commercial with the sexy sample of the woman saying "how do i
look?" over the hip bossa beat............ except of course this has
sexy women just singing "To-reeeeeeee-no" over the hip bossa beat!!!!!!
anyway- if anyone's interested in this and wants to pay me for a blank
CD and shipping, I'll be willing to make a few copies when i get around
to it.......
cheers!

I totally know how Johan feels. I mean, I used to live in the States and=
