Following the recent thread re. the Metropole Orchestra's Popp and Roger
CDs, I received this response from Jeroen. He asked me to forward it to y'all.
- -Lou
*******
to Kevin Leeeeee and others
I`m sorry to hear that you felt fooled in a way that La Musique did not have
the originals on it. I can only say that you will probably appreciate the cd
more and more while listening to it several times. If there are more of you
that think that Metropole Orchestra is not clearly enough mentioned on the
artwork (although it is on three of the four sides on the outside...) and
bought the cd and were dissappointed when you got home, please let me know
at basta@xs4all.nl. IF I get serious remarks about this, I might change the
design on the cover, indicating more clearly that it is a recording by the
Metropole.
However, the disc has compositions on it that are not available on cd these
days, and that is a very good reason that, when you love Popp, you MUST have
the Metropole edition as well as Delirium in Hifi. As Marco stated, Delirium
in Hifi is an Essential Reissue. And regarding Roger Roger, the Metropole
made one of their best discs ever with that one and it is the only decent
recording of Roger Roger`s music you can get. Please understand that I am
not trying to make a commercial thing out of this reply; things I am saying
here have been confirmed in relevant mags and papers.
Kevin, as a one time exception only, get me your address and I will get you
Delirium in Hifi. Hope you will also share your thoughts on that recording
in the exotica list.
To all: At Basta we are working VERY VERY VERY hard to get two other Popp
albums, HOLIDAY FOR DEEJAYS & PRESENTING POPP!. Also two Essentials. For
now, it looks like we are going to get the license (after 8 months of
discussion), so that should satisfy your needs. And we are this and next
week recording another record with the Metropole Orchestra, to which we
added some Beau Hunks. Ever heard WAR DANCE FOR WOODEN INDIANS or TOY
TRUMPET performed by 65 men? I went to the studio yesterday and I could not
believe my ears! Besides that one, we got coming up:
MANHATTAN RESEARCH, INC. - A DIVISION OF RAYMOND SCOTT ENTERPRISES
BEAU HUNKS - SAXOPHONE SOCTETTE
BEAU HUNKS - SAXOPHONE SOCTETTE FEAT. AL GALLODORO
RAYMOND SCOTT - SOOTHING SOUNDS FOR BABY (LIMITED VINYL SET, 1500 COPIES)
ARLING & CAMERON & SWARTE - SOUNDSHOPPING (EXTREME ARTWORK BY JOOST SWARTE)
and of course we recently released:
DR. SAMUEL J. HOFFMAN & THE THEREMIN, including the albums PERFUME SET TO
MUSIC, MUSIC OUT OF THE MOON & MUSIC FOR PEACE OF MIND.
So lots of ambitious projects with which we hope to serve a lot of fans of
the Basta label; we never intend to fool people for what reason. I always
take remarks very seriously and if possible, see to it that things are
changed for the better. Basta cannot exists without people like you and we
hope we add more joy to your lives in return.

*Bill Crofut
SANDISFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Bill Crofut, a musician who recorded more than
20 albums and whose repertoire stretched from Bach to blues and beyond, died
Monday of cancer. He was 64.
Crofut, a banjo player, took up the instrument in 1955. After performing in
coffeehouses and clubs with a high school friend, his career was launched
when Adlai Stevenson asked the folk-singing duo to play at the United Nations.
They performed a parody, written by Crofut and sung to the tune of the
``Twelve Days of Christmas,'' about President John F. Kennedy and Soviet
Premier Nikita Khrushchev.
He recorded folk duets with British baritone Benjamin Luzon and banjo
renditions of the classical music of Brahms, Mozart, and Schumann. Recently,
he teamed up with Chris Brubeck, and in 1996, they recorded an album with
soprano Frederica von Stade.
*Jimmy Day
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Jimmy Day, a steel guitarist who performed with
Willie Nelson and became one of the most in-demand musicians in Nashville,
died Friday from heart failure after a battle with cancer. He was 65.
Day hit it big in 1956 playing steel guitar with Ray Price on the hit
``Crazy Arms.'' He played on Nelson's classic ``Shotgun Willie'' album, and
hits like ``Pick Me Up on Your Way Down'' by Charlie Walker and Price's
``Heartaches By the Number'' and ``City Lights.''
Day is in the International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, the Texas Steel
Guitar Hall of Fame and the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame.
*James M. Domengeaux
NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) -- James M. ``Jimmy'' Domengeaux, a guitarist with the
Grammy-nominated band, Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, died Monday in a
motorcycle accident. He was 44.
Domengeaux, wrecked his motorcycle on U.S. 90 and was struck by two
motorists as he lay on the pavement. State police are awaiting a coroner's
report to try to determine whether he died as a result of the fall or by one
of the vehicles that struck him.
A musician for 38 years, Domengeaux was known for his versatile guitar
playing. He first rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early '80s with
the hard rock group Black Dog, a band that fused rock and ``swamp'' pop.
But Domengeaux really shined with Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, whose
sound made them popular in roots music circles and mainstays on the
international festival circuit. The group performed worldwide, won numerous
awards from the Cajun French Music Association and was nominated for a
Grammy award in 1993.
*Herman Wedemeyer
HONOLULU (AP) -- Herman Wedemeyer, a college football All-American who
later became a regular on ``Hawaii Five-O,'' died Monday. He was 74.
Wedemeyer appeared in the popular television series from 1971 to 1980,
playing the role of Edward D. ``Duke'' Lukela.
At St. Mary's College in California, Wedemeyer, an elusive running back was
known as ``Squirmin' Herman'' and the ``Hula-hipped Hawaiian,'' was named an
AP All-American in 1945. He was a member of the National Football Foundation
College Hall of Fame and the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame.
Wedemeyer was a first-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dons of the All
America Football Conference but an injury cut short his career.
He was elected to the Honolulu City Council as a Republican in 1968, and
then elected to the state House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1970. He
won re-election in 1972.

Not all countries on this planet are territory of the US Mail, surprise!
So for some people in countries with much higher postal rates,
especially when exchanging 3 or more tapes at a time it may be a
reasonable consideration to leave the cassettes at home, as these do not
contain any important information and only cost money. I don't know
what's so funny about it. I was trying to give an idea to those who can
use it. You can do what you want and send your typewriter along with
your letters.

I haven't seen it yet, but I went to journalism school with one of the
authors, Thomas Conner, and he told me about this project nearly a year ago.
He and Wooley work at The Tulsa World, where Conner is the music

From: Nat Kone <bruno@yhammer.com>
Subject: (exotica) an exotica list tribute, sort of
A little story...
I've been making a lot of "now sound"/loungecore/instrumental rock tapes
lately.
It started when a friend - not on this list - asked me if I could make him
a couple of tapes so he could write an article about the REAL sixties,
which for the purposes of these tape, I'm calling "the shadow sixties".
The idea of the tapes, I guess, is to try and show how most people
experienced the "music of the sixties". So it's more about "fake" rock
than "real" rock, whatever that is. His article isn't really about music
but there is a connection between his theme and the implicit theme of these
tapes.
At the same time, I was talking with a friend on this mailing list and one
thing led to another and suddenly I had decided to make him a "box set" or
the same kind of stuff.
This kind of stuff - which I've decided to call "now sound" after calling
it "loungecore" for a year - has been pretty well the centre of my junk
store/exotica/ vinyl pursuit for a while now and I thought it might be an
idea to sum it up with these tapes and perhaps reach "closure".
(I don't really believe that but it would be nice if I could move on.)
I'm about half finished now and It's been an excruciating process for a
number of reasons. One is that I'm making both sets of tapes at the same
time and they have slightly different concepts. It's a mental juggling act.
But the main reason the process has been so difficult is that I've decided
to "organize" the tapes by my own "genres". So I can't mix the tapes too
much and I can't use all my best stuff.
As I've gone through the process, I've dashed off notes to the eventual
recipient, whining and complaining about the difficulties and trying to get
some guidance. "Do you mind a few too many Beatles covers?" "How much
moog stuff do you have?" "Do you prefer crooners or choirs?"
Anyway, I just limped to the end of one particularly excruciating tape
today. (And I had to cheat the concept to do it.)
I didn't want to listen to it right away so I turned on a tape that someone
on this list had kindly made for ME.
The first cut of the tape was this great version of "On the road again". I
think. Totally blew away the Santo and Johnny version I had put on a
previous tape.
It hurt.
But at the same time, there was this moment of connection... alignment.
I don't quite know how to say it but it's like I'm in this big conversation.
On this list.
Exchanging tapes, records and obsessions.
I share some of this stuff with a few "real life" friends obviously, but
not many. And Lord knows I don't really NEED any reason to think about this
stuff more than I already do. But I'm glad I have the opportunity anyway.
That's my belated exotica-list New Year's tribute. I'll celebrate my first
year anniversary online in a week or so. (I won't actually celebrate it.)
And the first thing I did was join this list.
So thanks guys. And I'm really glad you're not all guys, by the way.
Nat

Subject: (exotica) EXOTICA FILMS 2: Music and More! at Fez
OK, here's my last spam mail on the EXOTICA FILMS 2 program in NYC this
Friday. By the way, a slightly shorter version will be presented on
Thursday, Jan. 28 (tonight!) in Philadelphia at the Silk City Lounge, doors
opening at 9:00. The Philadelphia show will not include the Scopitones or
talk, since these have already been done in Philly.
EXOTICA FILMS 2: Music and More! at Fez
Fez, 380 Lafayette Street
(between E. 4th & Great Jones)
New York City =95 (212) 533-2680
On Friday, January 29, the Secret Cinema will present EXOTICA FILMS 2:
Music and More! at Fez. This collection of ultra-rare footage will showcase
a unique collection of filmed musical performances from a variety of
offbeat jazz, pop, and rock artists from around the globe. The films come
from a variety of sources, including very early TV shows, film jukeboxes
from the 1940s ("Soundies") and 1960s ("Scopitones"), and select feature
film clips. This long awaited follow-up to the Secret Cinema's EXOTICA
MUSIC FILMS program of a year and a half ago features 100% new programming
- -- little of which is likely to have been seen before by anybody attending!
Doors open at 8:30 pm. The screening begins at 9:00 pm. Admission is $8.00.
As with all Secret Cinema presentations, all of the films will be projected
from archival 16mm film prints onto a giant movie screen (not video).
Just some of the performers shown on the big screen will include: Astrud
Gilberto, Desi Arnaz, Sylvie Vartan, Trini Lopez, Johnny Hallyday and
Carmen Miranda.=20
Adding extra spice to this celluloid smorgasboard is a selection of equally
arcane short subjects, without musicians but plenty of exoticism:
Technicolor travelogues of Caribbean isles, coming attraction "trailers"
for Maria Montez movies, a 1920s silent film on "Ceylon Devil Dancers and
Buddas," and a look at tiki carving and other customs of the South Seas.
Plus, scenes from a never-shown-in-the-U.S. French TV special, WORLD MUSIC
ET SETECT, featuring organ jazz/pop-rock instro combo Andr=E9 Brasseur et=
son
Orchestre, Peter Max-like animation and pop-art special effects.=20
Plus, a sampling of DISK JOCKEY TV TOONS. These lost artifacts from early
50s broadcasting were marketed to local television stations for use as
filler programming during Hit Parade-type shows. The low-budget, bizarre
visualizations are essentially rock videos with no soundtracks, and were
made to be shown with suggested popular records.
And if all this weren't enough, there will be a special talk about the
history of film jukeboxes by Secret Cinema curator Jay Schwartz,
illustrated with color slides of rare photos and original advertising
materials.=20
The Secret Cinema, begun in 1992, is a Philadelphia-based floating
repertory film series that shows unusual and lost film fare of all types at
various locations.

Subject: Re: (exotica) Album Scanning Question(s)
The problem with most scanners is that the colors of the scans differ
remarkably to the edges. So first thing you should do is to place the
middle section of the album, the section where you will attach the two
halves of the image together, as far to the center of the glass as you
can. The idea is that the areas where you "cut" the image in both scans
has about the same distance from the edge of the scanner, so they will
at least have a similar color. It is very important that you place the
record cover very exactely parrallel to the edge or you will have
problems of fitting the two images together. I mean you can still turn
them with the respective Photoshop tools , but... it's hassle.
Now... When you put them together and still see a difference in
brightness or color you will have to work a bit on the colors of the
half that you are just about to paste. I use the Histogram menu of
Photoshop, but a combined use of brightness/contrast and Tone value may
also do it. When you're finished with attaching the two halves of the
picture you start with the correction of the whole image according to
what you see when you look at the album. For anything online that will
be enough. If you're going into print.... but I don't think that's what
you want.
Every scanner has its own charcteristics. With mine I sometimes have to
correct the colors of just a small stripe at the edge of the image to
make it fit to the rest using a soft selection (50 to 100 pixels). The
edge of the selection has to be chosen in the middle of the area between
the good and the to-be-corrected part.
Hope my technical English was not too poor.

Naaa, a Maxell XL-II weighs 40 grams, 15 g for the tape, 25 for the cassette.
A word about sound storage media:
Mini CDs, Mini Discs, Mini Cassettes, DATs, DVD tapes, MP3s... the thing is,
all kinds of formats are pushed by the industry, getting more each year. The
only recordable medium that EVERYBODY seems to have is still the music
cassette. So for me it is still the thing I'm most likely to waste my thoughts
about. That's why I came up with this a bit funny idea of taking them apart
for shipping. As for the future I think only a pure software format will be a
real advantage, something that works without any drives, electro motors and
sensible hardware. MP3 is such a thing - as far as I know - and that's why I
think everything else will disappear and I will not buy it.

Well, aside from the fact that there is no mention of a reissuing
company anywhere on the record and that, as far as I am aware, MGM
stopped reissuing music several decades ago, I showed a copy to Dick
Hyman when he was in town last August and he confirmed it wasn't
legit...

From what Laura posted:
She said it was on MGM, which hasn't made any recordings or been
reactivated in years. It also does not state who is responsible for the
reissue.
It is not listed on GEMM, which is a pretty good barometer of things in
print legitimately(Note the use of the words pretty good)

Little tell-tale signs like no country listing, no proper label listed(MGM as
a record label went out of business years ago), no listing of Polygtram (the
rights owner -- it is a requirement on licensed reissues to klist the
licensor.

Subject: Re: (exotica) Overseas mailing and cassettes...
Here's a method that I always use to save money mailing cassettes...
First I cut out as much tape leader as possible. Whose idea was it to add all
that stuff -- probably someone who works at the poost office!
Second, I sand the cassette housing down to about 1/324" which not only
reduces the thickness of the cassette housing but gets rid of the printing on
the cassette shell itself which can add to your mailing costs. it takes
anywhere from 4 to 6 hours but it sure saves nearly a cent in mailimng costs
by itself and if you need a break you can seperate that 2-ply toilet paper
into single ply so you can even save money while on break!
Next I replace those heavy heavy metal screws with cheap lightweaight plastic
ones.
Next I tape the empty cassette reel (as was posted before) too, but I save
even more money by using the scotch tape from Christmas wrapping I have saved
through the years.
The biggest trick is in the packaging. I hermetically seal the cassette and
fill the package with helium. This causes the package to slighlty float on the
postal meeting a give a reading slightly less than the true weight of the
package. I always keep several helium tanks arothe house for this and they
come in useful when signing along with the Nutty Squirrels albums.
Lastly the biggest savings I get is buy actually purchasing 5 cents less than
the amount of stamps than needed so that the package arrives postage due. Not
only do you save an extra nickle but 5 cents is usually not enough for the
recipient to grumble too much about forking over.

Subject: (exotica) Customs Forms
Hey,
I know we went over this about a year ago, but I was wondering:
What's the best way to fill out a US-to-foreign customs form such that the
person ont he receiving end pays the least amount of duty?
I've got a place for items and value,
and I've got check boxes for gift, merchandise and commercial sample.
I don't want to put something down that inadvertantly costs my recipients
overseas an extra twenty pounds or whatever.
Also, does this vary by country?
Thanks,
peter

Lie. That's the best way. Lie about it's value on the outside, then send =
a receipt as a letter separately. Say it is a gift. However, if someone =
orders frequently from a foreign country, the customs officers get wise =
to this and will slap a duty on it anyway. Because you can't send 35 $5 =
gifts from US to UK a year - especially not to the same address. So if =
someone is ordering a lot, they should perhaps use a friend's address. =
I think when mailing a parcel from the US to UK, you can send up to $45 =
without a charge, but it is probably better to make it as cheap as possib=
le because of what I mentioned above. If the person regularly receives =
packages for $30, they will very soon get slapped with customs and excise=
.
I know. I'm American and live in the UK. So this whole scenario is all =
too familiar for me.

Subject: Re: (exotica) Customs Forms
UK Customs will only charge duty on shipments worth over $250. If you send
records and you declare a nominal value for the shpiment, say $20, there is
no customs charge. However if you say your package is worth $20 when in
fact it is worth $1000, then you run the small risk of the customs man
opening the package and charging you the duty on $1000 worth of goods. With
records, if you say its $20 worth, its unlikely that Mr customs is going to
hold back the shipment or charge you extra unless he opens the package and
really knows his records.
If you're sending something substantial (e.g., a Pinball machine), its hard
to get away with a nominal value because customs know what's what and
they're not stupid. It is also possible to address something to your own
name at somebody else's address as personal effects (your own goods). This
declaration says that the goods are more than 6 months old and that they
belong to you. No duty is payable on a personal effects shipment.
If you want to know more, call the customs man in London on 0044 171 202
4227 for general enquiries and ask about the specific item.

I agree with Jill - lie! Here in Canada, we're allowed packages with
values of up to $40 CDN (which is something like $27 US these days) from
overseas, but only $20 CDN from the US - it's a customs ruling they
brought in a few years back to discourage people from shopping by mail
in the US. (don't you just love those protectionist Canadian policies?)
They're usually pretty lenient on personal shipments, but will crack
down on packages from commercial vendors.
So it helps to check off "gift", for starters, and use a home address
with no indication of a business on the outside of the package as a
return address. Never include an invoice (unless it's for a much lower
amount), and always value it low. Usually, if it's for LPs and CDs,
writing "used LPs/CDs" on the form helps - like the average customs
officer knows the value of this stuff?
And unless you have a whole lot of packages arriving from the same
vendor or person on the same day, there shouldn't be any problem (at
least in Canada) with customs charging for them.
