Fancy a little pork rind in your martini? Well, read all about it
before you make up your mind. This site is devoted entirely to
cocktails and includes funny stories from bartenders, information
about cigars, recipe books, and some snippets from Frank Sinatra, not
to mention the Perfect Pork Martini.

Anyway, you can take The Shaggs off the list 'cause Irwin Chisid's got that
one covered:
for immediate release
THE SHAGGS
PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD
legendary album slated for re-release on RCA Victor
Reissue produced by Irwin Chusid and Terry Adams
February 23, 1999 scheduled release
PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD was one of Frank Zappa's favorite albums. Rolling
Stone's 1996 'Alt-Rock-A-Rama' book ranked it among "The 100 Most
Influential Alternative Releases of All Time," "The Greatest Garage
Recordings of the 20th Century," and "The 50 Most Significant Indie Records."
The Shaggs -- sisters Dorothy, Helen, and Betty Wiggin -- hailed from the
culturally disconnected backwater of Fremont, NH. Having never seen a live
rock band, but having heard their favorite songs on the radio, these
hothouse siblings formed a trio playing two guitars and drums. In 1969 they
recorded PHILOSOPHY..., now recognized as a monument of "aboriginal rock."
The Shaggs are a touchstone of unpretentiousness. Their music is earnest,
authentic, and refreshingly guileless. Hacked-at chords, missed downbeats,
out-of-socket transitions, blown accents, and accidental convergences
abound. And yet -- it all works! The Shaggs' lost-chord wonderland has an
internal logic that transcends the conventional relationship between
ability, technique, and originality. PHILOSOPHY... crowns the Wiggin sisters
as the legendary, if unwitting, Queens of Outsider Music.
1999 marks the 30th anniversary of the rarely-seen original release. A 1980
vinyl LP reissue on Rounder/Red Rooster is long out-of-print. In 1988,
PHILOSOPHY... was issued on CD by Rounder, but the songs were remixed, the
tracks resequenced, later (and far more proficient, i.e., less interesting)
tracks were included, and the original album cover art was omitted.
The RCA Victor package represents the first authentic reissue of the
original PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD, as conceived by the Shaggs' proud papa,
Austin Wiggin, Jr. In addition to the original sequence, cover art, and
liner notes (and NO extra tracks), this package includes new biographical
notes by Irwin Chusid, and the first-ever publication of a
rare photo of Austin and Annie Wiggin, subjects of the Shaggs' classic song,
"Who Are Parents?"

Inventing Entertainment: The Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings of the
Edison Companies -- LOC
[MPEG, Quicktime, RealPlayer]
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/edhtml/edhome.html
This latest addition to the Library of Congress American memory site
highlights Thomas Edison's entertainment inventions. Included in the 1,093
patents Edison received in his lifetime were the phonograph, the Kinetograph
(a motion picture camera), and the Kinetoscope (a motion picture viewer). A
large number of movies and recordings made by Edison and his companies
survive today in the Library of Congress, and this site offers a large
sampling, including 341 Edison motion pictures, 81 disc sound recordings,
and several photographs, advertisements, and magazine articles. These audio
and video selections offer a glimpse into not only the inventor and his
achievements, but also
turn-of-the-century American history and culture. The motion pictures are
available in either MPEG or Quicktime format and may be browsed
chronologically, alphabetically, or by genre. RealAudio recordings may be
browsed by genre or alphabetically. Selections in both categories represent
the wide diversity of subject matter covered by the Edison Company. Users
wishing to see or hear the inventor himself will want to examine the motion
picture, _A Day with Thomas A. Edison_ (1922) or the recording "Let Us Not
Forget" (1919). Additional resources at the site include a biography,
timeline, bibliography, and internal keyword search engine.

I cant decide if I should buy a Anita Darian LP on Kapp called "East of
the sun".
I have a record called "Hawaiian Paradise" with Bill Jaffee and his
Islanders with etheral singing by Anita Darian that is really great, but
i have never heard "East of the sun".
. Its not that expensive but enough to be a pain if the record turns out
to be bad.

BTW- Harold Chang is alive and kickin' here in the islands. He works at
Harry's Music in the percussion dept. On a poignant note... Martin Denny
called yesterday to express his desire to play Carnegie Hall this year.
He has never played there and sees this as an crowning moment. Last year
he and Augie Colon performed at a fundraiser for the Starkey Hearing
Foundation in Los Angeles backed by a 48 piece orchestra. People like
Dionne Warwick and Jerry Butler were also on the bill. It coincided with
his 87th birthday (April 10) and he loved the gig. He last played here
in 1995 with the Honolulu Symphony and a 10 piece group that he put
together that included several members of Don Tiki (Noel Okimoto on
vibes, et al). Aside from practice, practice, practice... anyone know
the scoops on playing Carnegie, any contacts, sponsorship ideas? Mahalo

I was just at a thrift store that had these albums, which looked
interesting, but they had everything at 1.50 a pop!
I picked up a Mongo Santamaria and a DNA record, but was afraid to take
such expensive chances on these others. Can anyone recommend or deny the
following:
Art Mooney - Spectacular Voices with Banjo - It looks great, but it sure
could suck.
Three Suns - Swingin' Thing
Three Suns - Midnite For Two - I've got some three suns and they are hit or
miss for me. Although, I'll probably go back for these anyway.
Stan Kenton/Pete Rugolo - Artistry in Voices and Brass - Good? Bad? Who
could tell. The record jacket looked promising at first, but after talking
about "adding romantic lyrics" I got scared.
Arthut Murray Cha-Cha record - If he talks or teaches the Cha-Cha, I'm on
it. If it's just more cha-cha, unless it's good, I'm off it. Let me know!
And finally, a collection from the Singcord label - New Sounds! It looks
like it could be the go-go string thing of other new sounds stuff like
Sound Gallery, but it could just as easily be uber-cheese, like the
Sandpipers or something. Hard to tell, and no cover versions to speak of.
Please, if anyone could please let me know if these are worth a buck fifty
a shot.
I woulda bought them already, but I had to eat too.
I know, I'm a thrifting wuss.
But the 1.50 price tag on every album including Andy Williams, Barbara
Streisand and the ever-present Dawn, featuring Tony Orlando, as well as
Clyde Hyde the ventriloquist's dummy, turned me off. I hate that!

Subject: (exotica) Say Nice Things About Mitch
Like the rest of you, I have spent too many hours of my record-hunting life
edging around vast heaps of "Sing Along With Mitch" records. I had always
assumed that these were 100% middle-america crap. . . but now, I'm not
so sure. . .
The first inkling I might have misjudged Mitch Miller came when I found the
disk with his cover of "Give Peace a Chance." Expecting a total kitschfest,
instead we hear Mitch's voice shaking with genuine anger as he croaks,
"sing it to Congress!" and "hassle the Man!" Was he secretly some old
Woody-Guthrie-labor-songs Leftie? (You can catch a nice glimpse of Tony
Mottola and Dick Hyman at the back of the group shot, too.)
Then yesterday on the radio we heard a classical music review, where they
played a 50s recording of Stravinsky conducting one of his own chamber
pieces. Turns out it was Mitch playing the Oboe! (And dammed beautifully,
too, I might add.)
So what is the deal with the guy? Are any of the other "Sing Along" records
worth owning?

Bravo has a medley of music shows Thursday night.
At 9:00pm and 1:00am (eastern time -- also Saturday at 6:00pm), it's "Jazz
On A Summer's Day" (1959). This is a great little documentary of the 1958
Newport Jazz Festival. A real time trip. Great people watching (see what
1958 jazz fans were *really* wearing) and more importantly: Louis
Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Dinah Washington, Big Maybelle, Thelonious Monk,
Anita O'Day, Mahalia Jackson, Sonny Stitt, Jack Teagarden, Chuck Berry, and
the proverbial many more. But... its running time is 85 minutes, and the
new, commercially-interrupted Bravo has it in a 90 minute time slot. You
can finish the thought.
At 10:30pm and 2:30am, "The Church of Saint Coltrane" -- a half hour
documentary about a church in San Francisco dedicated to John Coltrane.
Haven't seen it yet.
At 11:00pm and 3:00am, "Red Hot + Rio" -- a video partner to one of those
"Red Hot + ___" albums. Saw it a while back -- it has some nice stuff in
it. Mostly Jobim covers, I guess that was the concept of the album.
Gil_berto Gil and Stereolab are among the artists.
And on Saturday, AMC serves up:
"I Married A Monster From Outer Space" (1958) at 7:35am Saturday Morning.
The classic 50s sci-fi marital training film.
"The Ghost In The Invisible Bikini" (1966) Saturday night at 10:05pm and
4:05am. Another AIP beach movie.

I don't understand the big thrill about recording video onto audio tape.
Given the complexity of video recordings, 1/2" tape is the minimum you
would want to be able to watch clearly and I think the pros use
either 3/4" or 1" tape. 8mm video uses smaller width tape and isn't
nearly as clear on a big screen. Now if we're talking quality here, try
recording audio on to 1/2'" videotape through a high quality stereo VCR
(I know a few people that swear by Beta Hi-Fi for this purpose). The
big advantage is you can then use one machine for two purposes and
cut down (for a change) on hardware costs.

I have that. I've been known to occasionally include her version of
"Misirlou" or "Little Street in Singaporel" on a mixed exotica tape.
The liner notes make the requisite comparison to Yma Sumac and there are
moments that might remind you of Yma - the tune "Come on a my house" for
instance - but otherwise I'd say there's not much of a comparison.
More of a contrast... ("Compare and contrast"...)
I was slightly disappointed when I first heard it. Her voice is much more
operatic or even "Broadway" - a la Ethel Merman - than I had hoped.
Not really very ethereal.
I know I'm not giving it a very positive review. But I kept it. And I do
play it. It fills a gap of sorts in my exotica collection.
I'd pay five bucks for it. Canadian. Meaning, I wouldn't pay real money
but it's worth more than a buck.

I wouldn't pay more than fifty cents for anything with banjos (unless it

Definitely go back for a Swingin Thing. I think even the diehard Three
Suns fans would say that they're hit and miss. The most consistent records
like "Movin and Groovin" still swing wildly from highs to lows IMHO.
Buy Swingin Thing for "african waltz" and maybe "nite trix" and "painted
desert".

Depends what you like. I have this and I like it but then I like these
multi-voiced records. It IS basically a singing record. There's a nice
version of "Painted Rhythm" which goes on the occasional tape.
If you haven't started to get into records like this and Kirby Stone Four
and the Hi Lo's, this is as good a place as any to start. Unless you want
to avoid this whole genre...
>>Arthut Murray Cha-Cha record - If he talks or teaches the Cha-Cha, I'm on

You'd have to be more specific. I have three and i think there's only
talking on one. If it's "AM's Library of Dance Music: best of Cha Cha" then
there's no talking but the music by Noro Morales and Johnny Conquet is
pretty good.
I don't know what you mean by good cha cha though.
Again, I wouldn't spend three bucks on this, maybe not even two, but a buck
fifty yeah.

No comment. I kind of relate but my threshold is obviously different.
When I find a record I can't figure out if I should buy for a buck, it's
usually something more questionable. Then again, what's questionable to
one...

Mahalo Brian! We seem to be a critical success, but not box office. We'd
love to do 2nd album, but no kala ($) for it or a tour right now. You'll
just have to visit Hawaii to see the band. Here's the info on Don Tiki.
Sorry to everyone on list if waay too much copy... it's our abbreviated
press release:
The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki
Satisfy your craving for genuine fresh pineapple with Don Tiki's=20
collection of new exotic and danceable tiki-tunes... brimming with
haunting melodies, pulsating polynesian polyphonics, and sultry
undulating rhythms.
The album kicks off with "Exotica 2000"... with the original =93Kahuna of
the exotica sound," Martin Denny, sitting in on piano on this update of
his masterpiece. At 87,he still tickles the 88s beautifully.=20
Other special guests make appearances on this unique CD. Jimmy Borges,
Hawai'i's own Frank Sinatra, croons and swoons on the eerily romantic
"Terminal." The lush exotic arrangement for "Close Your Eyes" is the
perfect setting for the languid vocals of the incomparable Teresa
Bright. =20
The Don=92s bassist Hai Jong Aholelei, the "Girl from Pago Pago,"
lends her sultry yet naive vocals to the sensational cover of "An
Occasional Man" and the original tune, "Bam-Boozled"... Jim Howard=92s
breathy flutes and Noel Okimoto=92s drum and mallet work pay deep
homage to Martin Denny on the new tune, "Maidenhair Fern." Mike
Muldoon's persuasive percussion boils on "Hot Like Lava"...
Carlinhos De Oliveira (the tambourine playing boy in Black Orpheus,
the film that introduced samba music to the world) showcases his
Brazilian percussion talents on "Itchy Palms."
The sound is augmented with appearances by Frank Orrall of Poi Dog
Pondering, Salaam Tillman, Fluid Floyd, and Lopaka Colon=92s genetically
authentic birdcalls (he=92s Augie Colon's son).The evocative, come-hither
vocals are provided by the gorgeous and talented Lana Warner, Don Tiki's
own Sandy Warner look-alike (the model that graced most of Denny's album
covers).
There are nine original tunes by keyboardist Perry Coma... "Barbi in
Bali" is a tasty mix of Javanese gamelan, guiro and harpsicord that
recalls the music of '60's caper films. "Polyamor=E9" features the
latinesque guitar work of Ben Vegas. Clutch Cargo Cult romps playfully
through the sweaty palms of one's imagination. "Da T'ing He Grow" is a
provocative piece that shimmers. "Forever and Ever", the last track is a
never-before-recorded original by Martin Denny. His lush, romantic piano
solo creates a song destined to become a new standard.
Don Tiki is:
Perry Coma - piano, Hammond B-3, Yamaha DX7, Akai S3000, Wurlitzer
electric piano
Hai Jong Aholelei - bass, vocals
Mike Muldoon - congas, bongo, guiro, eggs
Carlinhos De Oliveira - congas, bongo, guiro, pandeiro, reco reco, cuica
de orpheus, surdo, udum, caxixi, rain stick, shakers
Noel Okimoto - drums, marimba, vibraphone, xylophone
Jim Howard - flute, alto flute, bass flute
Additional musicians:
Lopaka Colon - birdcalls & jungle sounds
Fluid Floyd - craft fair instrument, whale bone
Steve Jones - electric & acoustic bass
Sharene Lum - harp
Frank Orrall - to'ere, bench, royal poinciana seed pods, bongo skins,
Greg Sardinha - steel guitar
Salaam Tillman - congas, bongo, timbales, claves
Ben Vegas - electric guitar
Lana Warner - backing vocals
Special guests:
Martin Denny - Bosendorfer piano (Exotica '97 and Forever and Ever)
Jimmy Borges - vocals (Terminal)
Teresa Bright - vocals (Close Your Eyes)=20
Don Tiki is a creative collaboration of Lloyd Kandell and Kit Ebersbach.
The band features Hawaii's top musicians with cumulative experience
ranging from jazz fusion to world beat to the Honolulu Symphony to the
crassest Waikiki Showrooms.

Well we're not talking quality. We're talking about an image with "a
certain quality".
The Fisher Price cameras became a big deal in the film community when a few
experimental filmmakers took the cameras away from the kids and started
using them to make films.
Someone mentioned that vampire film "Nadja" or something. In that film,
the Fisher Price camera is used to show the vampire's point of view.
And we all know that vampires see the world in black and white with grain
the size of ice cubes.
And there's at least one other whole feature shot with this camera. I
think it's called "Another Girl Another Planet" even though, yeah i know,
that was a song by the Only Ones. Was the filmmaker's name something like
"Almadeira"??? (Anyone? Professor Straw?)
Film vs video vs images on audiotape.
Some filmmakers scratch and draw on Super Eight film and process it in
their bathtubs. I'm sure you know this (Brian).
Some people like grain, the bigger the better. They don't want a clear
image as much as they want "dancing grain". They like it when the image
starts to break down. They like to be reminded of the "materiality" of the
medium they're using.
And some people like tics, pops and that warm crackling campfire sound of
old vinyl.

sorry for any confusion. US release is Exotica '97. It is now being
released in Japan on P-Vine with lead track listed as Exotica 2000...
more shelf life? At least they didn't call it Exotica y2k.

Check out newsgroups for filmmakers and videographers. There is constant
arguement in this vein, it overrules these newsgroups. Is 3/4" u-matic
video better than 35mm Panavision film? Is digital better than analog? The
issue isnt clarity, its the art. Taste. What you like. Why are exoticats
so hooked on chemically unstable vinyl? Certainly not because vinyl is a
modern, technically superior format (although this is argued).
The pixelvision was scooped up by indies for the same reason that some guys
still shoot in black and white super-8 film and others still use tube
amplifiers and Hammond B-3 organs and collect 8-track tapes...it is unique.
There is nothing else quite like the pixelvision.
My .02 on an off topic thread...

Yeah, well, that is supposed to be part of their way of letting you look at
people who may be unscrupulous or something. I got a little creeped out when
I realized it probably wasn't such a good idea that I registed as a new user
using the name "Micheleflp" - so now everyone could see who I was and what mug
I was bidding on. Why was that creepy? I don't know exactly but all the
sudden I felt naked. I haven't bid on a tiki mug since! You can change you
name but like Otto says, anyone can look you up - there's no such thing as an
unlisted number at Ebay.

USA to UK costs:
$7.50 ish for an LP
$2.50 ish for a 45
$5.50 ish for a CD
So why do so many dealers try to charge so much for shipping?
I've had dealers tell me its $15 surface mail or $25 airmail.
Some dealer just charged me $10 for a 45 from US to UK and when I exclaimed
(after seeing the $2.16 sticker on the envelope), he seemed shocked that
his 'shipping department' had told him to charge so much.
Why can't people be happy just charging for the records they sell? Why do
they need to make a killing on the postage as well? Rant rant rant rant

So, how do you do that, Jack?
May I guess: You stick a 3 $ stamp on your envelope with a CD in it and drop
it into the mailbox, right?

Subject: Re: (exotica) Air Mail Costs
The problem with mail costs is that it is substantially less expensive
to mail items within and from the U.S. than most other places. I know
our mail costs in Canada are markedly higher than those in the U.S., and
those in Europe much higher still.
However, there are still (as Charles has discovered) dealers who try to
rip you off on postage costs, charging several times what it really
costs to mail an item. So while Jack may be mailing things for their
actual postage costs, not all dealers do. (actually, most of them
don't!)
And one thing I've noticed lately - mail costs for the U.S. may be less
expensive, but the time it takes for a package to arrive from there is
getting ridiculous. An airmail package sent from Europe arrives in
Canada within the week, and vice versa (sometimes within 3 days!), and
same for those sent within Canada. But lately, any package to/from the
U.S. takes up to 3 weeks, and that's airmail! So maybe you get what you
pay for in the end!

I generally get things within 4 or 5 working days from US to London UK. I
think its a great service - Pay by credit card, wait 5 days and there it
is. Any delay is usually down to the private dealer/collector hanging
around for a while brfore sending.
Has anyone got the Deep Throat soundtrack? And Deep Throat 2? Any good?
And does anybody know any other porn soundtracks?
Thanks.
