<< The modern day bartender 'counts' the liquor into the glass.
Every drink you will ever order has a total of 4 counts, be it a rum and
coke or a Long Island Iced Tea,..... This makes it obvious that you should
never order a drink with more than 2 different liquors in it, and if you can
handle gin and tonic for the rest of your lounging days, do it. Sticking
with the high proof liquor is a good idea too, forget the schnapps and -de
methe's >>
Well, everytime we go out to a restaurant or bar that is not the usual Tiki
Ti's, etc., I will order a Mai Tai or Zombie because those are about the only
two 99% sure they probably know how to make. And let me tell you I have drank
the worst things passing for Mai Tai's you've ever tasted. It really amazes
me and it worries me. I think these wonderful exotic drinks are going to
become "extinct" one of these days - so even tho I know it is probably going
to be bad, I continue to order Mai Tais out of tradition and a hope that the
continued "demand" I am creating, no matter how small, will assure that the
drinks will continue to be offered. I mean there's even places where I will
ask "Do you serve Mai Tais". Maybe that's what all us cocktailers need to do
is get out there to all the bars that aren't on our usual "cool" list of
places to visit and start ordering these drinks - Then engage them in a
conversation about the art of how these drinks were made (ala Beachbum Berry's
GrogLog history/or the cocktail of your choice) "old days" with the special
rums, etc. - I usually don't even tell them the drink sucks - I just drink
it happily and greatfully that I was even able to get the guy to make one.
I know I come up with some idiotic ideas sometimes, but think about what I am
saying. I mean why was there a proliferation of cocktails books released in
the past couple of years? Because there was a perceived demand (at least for
people who want to make drinks at their house and need a cocktail recipe
book). So lets follow this thru to the bar level - create demand - if not,
before you know it, in those bartending schools, Mai Tais, etc. will be
"phased out" as obsolete drinks no one wants any more. And we can't have
that, can we?

To the best of my knowledge, there was never an OST released for this movie
("I Love You, Alice B. Toklas"). There is no listing in the soundtrack
price guides. Too bad, as I recall the score being pretty groovy.

My guide (Jerry Osborne's Movie / TV Soundtracks and Original Cast Albums)
shows a listing for this. It lists the movie as 1967, but the album issue
date as 1975. So i'm not sure what the deal is. The label is Cinema (M)
LP-8010 and Bernstein is indeed the credited composer. Near mint value is
25-35.

Anyone know how to fix a CD?
There's a place here in town that charges four bucks to fix 'em, and they
say they can fix most of 'em.
Anyone know how this is done, because they sure wouldn't TELL me. I can
see why, and four bucks is better than buying a new one used at 8 bucks,
but still...
It can't be that difficult if they are doing it... Right?
Somebody here must know.

Underwhelming is not the word - - 'dismal' is more like it. I believe they
sold in the vicinity of 1000 copies of each. I believe they licensed 20,000
of each from BMG, which they had to pay for anyway. That means there are
19,000 copies of each sitting in a warehouse in Hoboken. As a result, the
promised CD's will not appear..........at least not from BarNone.

i wrote about them awhile back. here is that message, which stimulated ZERO
response, so that MAY tell you something.
"IF and only if you are into the sound of John Andrews Tartaglia, you'll
probably also enjoy two Mystic Moods Orchestra LP's that I recently picked up.
"Emotions" and "Extensions" are both arranged and conducted by Tartaglia.
Both have the same sound as his own "Good Morning Starshine" and "Tartaglian
Theorem".
Paul Beaver on moog, real-life sound effects (Brad Miller) and interesting
instruments such as novachord, harpsichord, harp and calliope. The Mystic
Moods Singers of course and the rest of the orchestra.
I have always shyed away from Mystic Moods albums, assuming they were true
easy listening. Not so with these two. These are complex, challenging
recordings and a long, long way from elevator music."
But don't take that as a recommendation! I've given them both a chance a few
times now and find them equally unenjoyable to listen to.

Subject: (exotica) In defense (?) of Ebay
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but it sounds like a lot of sour grapes.
Oh, people are charging way too much for these
mugs/records/beanies/hats/muppets/coins/whatever on Ebay. Well, no.
That's the nature of it. If you think the mug is only worth ten bucks, and
that's what you are willing to pay, and if you are top dollar, and the guy
has his reserve set super high, well, sounds like he's fooling hisself.
You're not out any money, he bungled a sale, and still had to pay to list it.
So, he's a dolt.
That's the way it works with capitalism.
And, there is something you can do.
Add feedback!
Go in and say, Neutral: This guy tends to set his reserves super high.
That's what feedback is for. If enough people do that, he'll lose sales.
We had the EXACT same thing happen to us once, and that's what we did.
Sure, there was disappointment because we thought we got a deal, but missed
it.
Two weeks later though, we bought the same item for significantly less than
we were willing to pay the first person for it. So, they missed a sale,
got neutral feedback and life went on.
I've had some really good experiences with it. I've found two things that
I've been searching for for a long time there, and yeah, I didn't get a
*deal* per se, but they did HAVE them, and I don't think I got screwed or
paid too much for them. And if I had, who's fault would that be.
So, yeah, the nature of capitalism is supply and demand, and if some idiot
shopkeeper thinks they can sell some tiki mug for twenty bucks, because
they saw someone on Ebay do it, more power to them.
In the meantime, we'll still scour and get lucky, and use Ebay as just
another tool.

You could. But I don't. Then again, I wouldn't normally ignore any record
with a cover version of "Early Morning Rain" or "Trains and boats and
planes" or "Homeward Bound".
Those are all on "Emotions", which I bought mostly for the cover photo of a
menage-a-trois playing Twister upside down on a beach.
I have five or six Mystic Mood records. I think the sound affects idea was
actually quite "ahead-of-its-time" and even kind of works. But even if it
didn't work, it would still fit into my "exotica / now sound" collection.
I'm a big fan of stupid ideas. The biggest problem with Mystic Moods is
that the records aren't actually stupid enough for true "what were they
thinking?" pleasure.
The other problem with the records is that with the sound affects bridging
the cuts, it's hard to take out one cut and put it on a compilation.
So with finger on fader button, I made myself an ALL Mystic Moods tape.
And whenever I put it on, there's always this moment where I forget about
it and next thing you know, I'm convinced there's a spring shower happening
in my apartment.
As far as Paul Beaver goes, yeah there's something a bit different about
"Emotions" but then all their records have a bit of a synthesized feel.
The best part of Emotions for me are the spoken word lyrics during songs
like "Early Morning Rain", which was the alternate Canadian national anthem
when I was growing up.
I also should mention their record "Erogenous". The inner sleeve features
a naked black couple and all the music is sort of generic soul and disco.
Some vocals, some instrumental. No sound affects. It's interesting to
speculate on their view of the relationship between race and the idea of
"erogenous".
Suddenly I'm afraid to mention the name Paul Beaver again.
But I'll say it. Beaver or no Beaver, I would always check them out for a
buck.

There is a way to buff out light scratches with a spray on clear plastic

If there is a repairable defect these remidies should work. If there is

Subject: (exotica) Would A Martini By Any Other Name . . .
<>
<< I hope this isn't coming off as bitchy because that's not the spirit I
intended. . . . . the martini was doing
just fine in real bars and among real drinkers until the Lounge scene
decided it was a fun word to say. >>
I certainly get the message you are conveying. I guess that I have gotten
more relaxed as to what makes a particular drink good to the imbiber. Keep in
mind that this does, in no way condone sloppy bartending. Personal choice and
likes just vary.
Do not confuse my "relaxed" definition of a martini with a novice status. I
have a collection of close to 50 vintage cocktail shakers, hundreds of
glasses, chrome cups/goblets, scads of bartending guides and books and
numerous vintage barwear items. I am passionate about it.
It just always gets me when one person tends to explain that their way of
making a martini (or what ever) is the only way. Of course they do this by
explaining that it is the correct way. And of course anyone who does it
differently? Well, you get the point.
I do not go for the flavored martinis that are out there but if people like
them that way -- it's their nickel -- now when they criticize me because I
don't like the chocolate martini -- that's a different story. I like my
martinis shaken (not because of JB) and all this argument about how it is
wrong because it dilutes the gin, bruises the vodka, gets little bits of ice
in the martini, etc. is a bore. So if a martini is diluted by a little water
(and a minuscule amount at that) is this some condemnation? Remind me not to
add any water to the next scotch I drink. And if an absence of H2O is the
requirement, just put the bottle of gin in the freezer and drink it straight
- -- that way the not water will ruin the drink.
I guess I have mellowed a little as time has gone by. More tolerant? You
bet. Oh, and by the way, I would never "respectfully suggest that the
martini is not your drink" because you have a different opinion on how you
like your made.

You can get the complete "8 1/2" soundtrack at Intrada. Go to
http://www.intrada.com/intcat.txt and scroll down to Rota.
The CD "Fellini & Rota" (CAM CVS 045, $14.99), also at Intrada, probably
has the 8 1/2 title track plus other Rota title tracks from Fellini movies.

Here's the scoop from the back of my copy of I LOVE YOU, ALICE B. TOKLAS, by
Elmer Bernstein: the disclaimer at the bottom of the liners says "This
album was produced expressly for members of THE FILM MUSIC COLLECTOR'S
SOCIETY and is not intended for commercial purposes." I've seen other STs
by these guys--generally older movies with orchestral scores. Their
releases look like bootleg with b&w photos. This one, however, is extremely
groovie with psychedelic rockin' sitar! They include several versions of
the main themes. It appears to contain ALL of the music from the film with
alternate arrangements. I found mine sealed and have since seen another
sealed one at the KUSF Rock 'n' Swap. Grab it if you ever see it!

This called capitalism. If you don't want to pay the price you don't have to.
And eBay is not ripping everybody off and driving up the prices. Less that 1%
of the entire tiki collecting/trading population even knows about eBay.
I have purchased 25 to 30 items on eBay with a pleasurable experience. Right
no because of advertising there are a disproportionate amount of bidders. So
the prices are up -- just don't pay.
Those people who put a reserve or high starting bid are just exercising their
free market rights.
I think the main thing is if you want something really, really bad eBay is a
great option. Darrell Brogden really wanted an Enchanted Tiki Room album and
found one at eBay. Did he pay a little more that he would like? Possibly
(notice I did not say probably) but AT LEAST HE WAS ABLE TO GET ONE. (As for
me? I got my Tiki Album thru the most generous efforts of one of our list
members -- for which my son and I are eternally grateful.)
Those with questions need to go to eBay and read. And you want a pink
elephant? Run the search engine and be prepared.

<< I just hope
the people on eBay are "smart enough" to see thru this roose - but then again
these are the same people that are "dumb enough" to be bidding up mugs and
things way over their reasonable market value. >>
This is what happens when collectibles become mainstream. I call it the "I
just want one so what it cost really doesn't matter" phenomenon.
Classic example is cocktail shakers. I have been collecting these things for
10 years. They use to be 5 to 15 bucks because they were just junk to most
and not recognized as a "valuable"/hot item. Now with the martini and cigar
craze there are tons of people who JUST WANT ONE. So the seller marks the
thing up to 60 bucks and sits back and waits.
Joe Cool comes in with his Romeo Y Julietta and thinks, "I will look cool
making my chocolate martini with this!". So he buys it and thinks, "Shit, 60
bucks ain't bad to look cool." Now the collectors are pissed.
Of course the collectors stash just went up in value, but it ain't an
investment until you sell it. That's why I call myself an accumulator instead
of a collector; I ain't selling.
OK, so am I pissed at Joe Cool and the seller who marks up the price? No,
this is the way a free market works.
This is the same reason if Joe tells me about his chocolate martini I don't
try to convince him the proper way to make a martini (insert "my way" into
"proper way" and look for that debate elsewhere). Joe does things the way he
wants and spends his money the way he wants that that my friends is the name
of the game.)
Supply and demand and you (and they) make a living. What I find funny is the
people who are mad about this free market exchange don't see the similarity
between this and their stocks or mutual funds going up in value. It the same
damn thing.

Most bar owners function with the "realistic" guidlines that most any business
owner functions under: "Make your customers happy."
If you order a drink and with in a sip or two really find it offensive,
carefully explain the situation to the bar keep. Most will accept the "this
is really not what I expected" or the simple "I really don't like this" and
not even expect you to say what is wrong. Go to an old stand by like gin and
tonic (or what ever). I would guess that 95% of the bar owners would rather
have you happy and "eat" the cost of the tossed drink that have you pissed
because you got something you did not like.

Not so much an album but the song, "That's what happiness is" is both weird
and cherished by me. It sounds funny, but when I found myself humming that
tune for a couple of days I knew that I had reached the level of being as
"incredibly strange" as the music I listened to.

On two seperate occasions I've had sellers back out of their sale
after the auction closed, once becasue the seller didn't have physical
posession of the record he was selling, and the second because he
changed his mind.
My one big complaint with Ebay (And I've bought a lot) is that the
record sellers have no clue on how to grade their records. I've bought
ratched pieces of shit that were marked mint.
Worst of all. I once e-mailed a seller to ask him if a record was in
stereo. He e-mailed back that it was. It arrived in the mail and
surprise, surprise, mono!!!
I've had mostly good luck on E-bay. But the 2 or 3 bad experiences
kind of ruined it for me.

It has this real folksy tune where the singer sing what happiness is for
different people.
A little snip:
To a preacher, it's a prayer, prayer, prayer.
To the Bettles, is's a yeah, yeah, yeah.
To a beatnick it's his beer, beer, beer.
To a monster, something weird, weird, weird.
In the desert, it's a drink, drink, drink.
To a showgirl, it a mink, mink, mink.
To a banker, it's lots and lots of dough.
To a racer, it's a GTO.
Happiness is, (happiness is), Happiness is, (happiness is), Happiness is,
(happiness is) . . . different things to different people . . . .That's what
happiness is.
You have got to hear it. You will find it embarassing that you like it.
As for those that have heard it, they will be humming it the rest of the day.
Sorry gang.
Any comments out there?

Vintage electronica from the mirthful moog pioneer Jean Jacques Perrey, has
now arrived in the anthology of 'Good Moog' (Kosinus/EMI CD, France 1999).
Compiled from seven albums of 'Sonosyntheses Electriques,' it features
exclusive recordings that have never before been publicly available. These
'sound library' albums of 1970s French electronica were only issued for use
within theatre, television, recording studios, radio stations and for
contemporary choreography. Original pressings today sell for =A3100s.
Hidden amongst the quirks and quarks of these 'Astral Animations and
Komputer Kartoons' are some of Perrey's craziest compositions. The
intergalactic cartoonery of 'Borborygmus' has already gbeen adopted by
=46rench banking agency Credit Foncier for their 1990s campaigns, whilst the
prowling beats that characterise 'La Panthere Cosmique' prove that this is
a future-past classic that rivals even the illustrious dancefloor-filler
'E.V.A.'
'Good Moog' is best served at room temperature, with warm company on cold
nights.
