I have never had an Ebay dealer solicit me for feedback before a deal was
done. If one did, I would probably respond with negative feedback. All of
my Ebay transactions (as I said earlier, I have only had a few successful
bids) have been comlpeted within 5 business days, all items were exactly as
described (sometimes better) and very well packaged.

I don't understand this analogy.
As for the argument about driving prices up and dealers buying items and
re-selling them two weeks later, have you never been to a collectibles
show? I used to do tables every now and then and the buying frenzy among
dealers (and some tricky gate-crashers) before the doors opened was truly
scary. Other dealers would *literally* take items from my hands as I was
trying to set up. You better believe I gave them some "negative feedback".
Unfortunately, I couldn't share it with the other show atendees.
The most frustrating thing about Ebay to me is, as Otto notes, the flurry
of activity in the closing seconds of an auction. The ebay server is
notriously unstable, and I have missed on some sales because my bid, while
submitted in what seemed like plenty of time (2 or 3 minutes before the
close) just didn't make it to the server. To say this is not "collecting",
though is not true. Collectors are well-known for odd compulsive behavior
just like this. I do agree it's not "finding"; IMHO, that only happens in
thrift stores, junk shops and the town dump.

You're right! I'm being a bit facist about the whole thing. As an Angry
Young Man, I remember being horrified and angry when unique stores in SF
would convert to chains and so much great neon and architecture was being
thrown away. Downtown San Francisco used to be great. It's now a big mall. I
suppose this is happening everywhere but we were a bit slower in the
conversion. There's nothing I can do so at some point I just retreated into
my own world. Its worked out OK.
Re: the sloppy bartending, I just think the shaker bit encourages it rather
than the more tradtional method. It's just a bit of a nusaince now to have
to say "stirred, not shaken" in addition to "gin" and "up", when at one
point you just used to say "martini". It's not that horrible.

Yes. You're right. I'd just ask novices to try the "other" way once instead
of accepting what is now the norm. I may be wrong, but I seriously doubt
your martinis are as watery as the ones we've been talking about in bars
these days. A lot of people don't have the advantage of having us old-timers
nearby.

It's not very fancy, but there's little better than a healthy shot with a
Corona chaser. The salt and lime thing can be civilized by pouring the salt
right on the lime slice, sucking, then swigging rather than messing up that
flap of skin between the thumb and index finger with salt and spittle.

Kent Cigarettes used the song in their ads (in the 60's?). The chorus was:
Happiness is (the taste of Kent), Happiness is (the taste of Kent)...
smooth (?) taste and fine tobacco. That's what happiness is.
It's a very catchy tune to begin with, but making it into a commercial
makes me realize what truly evil geniuses work in the ad biz. (I still
love the song, though).

I, too, recently heard one of my favorite exotica tunes backing a
commercial here in the U.S. (for Sprite, maybe?). It was Alan Hawkshaw's
"Girl in a Sportscar," which I know from the first Sound Gallery
compilation. I wondered, though, if the person responsible for putting that
music there heard it on the CD, or found it in some sort of TV music archive.

for immediate release
THE SHAGGS
PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD
legendary album slated for re-release on RCA Victor
Reissue produced by Irwin Chusid and Terry Adams
February 23, 1999 scheduled release
PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD was one of Frank Zappa's favorite albums.
Rolling Stone's 1996 'Alt-Rock-A-Rama' book ranked it among "The 100
Most Influential Alternative Releases of All Time," "The Greatest Garage
Recordings of the 20th Century," and "The 50 Most Significant Indie
Records."
The Shaggs -- sisters Dorothy, Helen, and Betty Wiggin -- hailed from
the culturally disconnected backwater of Fremont, NH. Having never seen
a live rock band, but having heard their favorite songs on the radio,
these hothouse siblings formed a trio playing two guitars and drums. In
1969 they recorded PHILOSOPHY..., now recognized as a monument of
"aboriginal rock."
The Shaggs are a touchstone of unpretentiousness. Their music is
earnest, authentic, and refreshingly guileless. Hacked-at chords, missed
downbeats, out-of-socket transitions, blown accents, and accidental
convergences abound. And yet -- it all works! The Shaggs' lost-chord
wonderland has an internal logic that transcends the conventional
relationship between ability, technique, and originality. PHILOSOPHY...
crowns the Wiggin sisters as the legendary, if unwitting, Queens of
Outsider Music.
1999 marks the 30th anniversary of the rarely-seen original release. A
1980 vinyl LP reissue on Rounder/Red Rooster is long out-of-print. In
1988, PHILOSOPHY... was issued on CD by Rounder, but the songs were
remixed, the tracks resequenced, later (and far more proficient, i.e.,
less interesting) tracks were included, and the original album cover art
was omitted.
The RCA Victor package represents the first authentic reissue of the
original PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD, as conceived by the Shaggs' proud
papa, Austin Wiggin, Jr. In addition to the original sequence, cover
art, and liner notes (and NO extra tracks), this package includes new
biographical notes by Irwin Chusid, and the first-ever publication of a
rare photo of Austin and Annie Wiggin, subjects of the Shaggs' classic
song, "Who Are Parents?"

Maybe I'm the last to know, but to those of you who are not already
aware...this is out now on CD. RCA (Spain). The Dusty Groove place lists it
as a new release.
I still can't forget my disappointment with this LP when I first listened to
it. I had great expectations and somehow had it it my mind this was a highly
treasured moog LP.
There are indeed a couple of killer tracks, Dizzy, MacArthur Park, Moog Power
- - which alone could very well make it worth your while. The rest of it is
lame vocals and you can barely identify the sound of a moog at all.

Time for someone to step in and ask what you mean by "weird".
If you mean true "irritainment", music that contacts your gag reflex but
doesn't quite induce vomiting, then certainly "Happiness Is" - the song and
the whole record - would qualify as classic weird Conniff.
In fact, it's probably true that if you're looking for weird Ray Conniff,
then you're looking for the Ray Conniff SINGERS.
And make sure it's the singers and not just the chorus because the wordless
vocal chorus actually participated in some pretty good records. It's when
they started to sing the words that things started to get weird.

I apologize in advance if this is off topic but, has any one heard of
this band?
Les Vice Barons. album: Steel Blue Moods
From the looks of the album I'd guess it was of the surf/spy genre,
perhaps similar to the James Taylor Quartet. Are the Belgian? (Not that
that matters, the LP I saw was a Belgian import.)

My guide (Jerry Osborne's Movie / TV Soundtracks and Original Cast Albums)
shows a listing for this. It lists the movie as 1967, but the album issue
date as 1975. So i'm not sure what the deal is. The label is Cinema (M)
LP-8010 and Bernstein is indeed the credited composer. Near mint value is
25-35.
I just played it on my show this morning, hope you all tuned in EVEN THOUGH
the software crashed at 11:15 AM PST
Not my fault or maybe 'cause I was playing THE KILLIN' S*** it knocked it
out o' whack, just kiddin':)
Ford is correct! It was only released in this way on that label.
It's basically the entire score all running into each other but there are
parts that can be "cued" up for separate tracks
IT IS THE GROOOOOOO-VY-EST THING THERE EVER WUZ!!!!!!!!!!
Sitar, wordless pa pa pa pa vocals, electric guitar, Peter Sellers singing
It's the stuff that dreams are made of.
I remember reading over the air the back cover which says something to the
effect of that it was only released to some special rekkid club and never
for a commercial release
FIND IT NOW!!! It's my 1st copy

Subject: (exotica) Fix My CD!!!
Anyone know how to fix a CD?
There's a place here in town that charges four bucks to fix 'em, and they
say they can fix most of 'em.
Anyone know how this is done, because they sure wouldn't TELL me. I can
see why, and four bucks is better than buying a new one used at 8 bucks,
but still...
It can't be that difficult if they are doing it... Right?
Somebody here must know.
Anyone?
Peter
Peter and all,
I have been told that on the rec.music.marketplace.cd newsgroup, a few
different people sell this stuff that completely removes all scratches and
whatever from (now) unplayable CD's and makes them like new.
Someone I know also told me the same thing and he has used it and it does
indeed work just like I just wrote:)
Good luck! I need some of that stuff, too

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but it sounds like a lot of sour grapes.
Oh, people are charging way too much for these
mugs/records/beanies/hats/muppets/coins/whatever on Ebay. Well, no.
That's the nature of it. If you think the mug is only worth ten bucks, and
that's what you are willing to pay, and if you are top dollar, and the guy
has his reserve set super high, well, sounds like he's fooling hisself.
You're not out any money, he bungled a sale, and still had to pay to list it.
So, he's a dolt.
That's the way it works with capitalism.
You don't sound like a jerk to me though you may to some people that want
to get all the killer stuff in the world for a steal and everyone has those
stories. So what. "Sometime" 1 has to pay more than a couple of bucks to
get what they really want unless they are poor, which I have no probelem
with what so ever or cheap, which I have a major ass problem with.
Yeah, I totally agree, but here's the deal with the sour grapes type of
mentality and people that refuse to live in the real world of paying more
than a quarter or 10 bucks for something they've been looking for, for 12
years.
They don't want to pay whatever and therefore, the person that is charging
X is a "fill in the blank."
BUT!!! When it comes to their OWN work, OR what they want to sell, like if
they are "self employed" or an artist of whatever ilk or whatever job they
do free lance, they want what they want to charge even if it may be deemed
by someone else to be over what that someone else wants to pay, yet they
REFUSE to hear their own hypocrisy!!!
It's incredible:-)
What goes around come around, yet they refuse to acknowledge that on *any
level*, 'cause they are different:-) which we all know is a crock of s***
This isn't about E-Bay. This is about something else much bigger.

I intentionally used the somewhat ambiguous word "weird" with the hopes of
eliciting a self revealing answer from any respondents to my post. I believed
that this would give me deeper insights into the mind of the Conniff fan and
help me to distinguish the "fan" from the mere Conniff observer. In fact it
took weeks doing research on which ambiguous word I should use to get the most
colorful response from the group. Finally all my trials lead me to the word
"weird", and I must say that your response does say quite a bit about you. In
fact, by using a rather complex algorithm that I devised to analyze each
response to my Conniff question I can figure out all of your bank account
numbers, your date of birth and certain intimate personal details about you.
Isn't science amazing.
Anyway, thanks for the information. I appreciate it and now you've gotten me
interested in finding out if your theory about the Conniff singers vs. the
chorus holds true with me.
Thanks,
Roy G. Biv and Roy Tillotson

steel guitar jazz from an insanely rare rekkid by 2 guys called the
"Hot Club of America". Johnny Cucci and Jody Carver
Came out in the early to mid 50's, Mono *Only*, obviously:)

Jo Stafford and Paul Weston formed a record company called Corinthian where
most of the material they were involved with was re-released. I have seen
the new cover art for some of them and I didn't like that aspect as
compared to the originals. Who knows, maybe they have gotten into CDs now.

Yes, but Otto made some pretty good points about sellers falsely bidding on
their own items and getting people to write nice reviews of them.... its a
good thing to be aware of if one is going to be bidding. Basically I look at
it this way: Would I pay that much for the item if I was at the local
swapmeet? If I wouldn't pay that much, then I don't let the bidding
competition psych me into a bidding war and eventually the poor house. I
think alot of people bidding on those mugs either have an awful lots of extra
pocket money to blow or are getting sucked into bidding wars. But then again,
it is their money.... and maybe they don't have any other way to buy those
tiki mugs/stuff - maybe they live in some faraway state with no access to a
swap meet. And then again, you make the point I have made repeatedly about
why I pay more to buy my "lounge" records at the swapmeet - because time is
money.
