I know a couple (of idiots) that just named their new born baby boy,

This CD was mentioned here not long ago with directions to the Capitol
site that only played a few cuts. Now the whole thing can be heard now
on the jukebox at www.broadcast.com, along with The Hefti Batman,
Bacharach's Lost Horizon OST, the Blacula OST, Martin Mull, Liberace,
The Cramps, plenty of punk and Hawaiian, and a buncha other crapola.
No, Divas Exotica does not include Shania singing "Teach Me Tiger" or
Mariah doing a medley from her upcoming Yma tribute "Legend of the Sun
Virgin", but who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, or is it in
the minds ?
But i can no longer find the 30's Cab Calloway movie I started watching

Subject: (exotica) My Story, My Search
Hi All
I've been lurking on the edges for a while. Am enjoying all the interesting chat.
I did not know that exotica had such a huge following. In fact I didn't even know
that 'exotica' described a style of music! I've learned a lot.
My Story:
Back in the early 70's as a young child of 10ish, my family and I owned a small
sailboat named Happy Face. Happy Face was a fluch deck Fraser '30. Every summer
we'd (M,D, and two brothers) go sailing for the month of August. These were
blissful times for our family. Here on the Pacific Northwest coast, we have some
of the most beautiful cruising waters in the world.
Sometime back then we aquired a tape of Martin Denny's called Exotic Moog. I know
not where the tape came from, none of us knew anything about Moog music or Martin
Denny. Thinking now, I bet that tape came out of a used car. My father was a
mechanic with his own shop. He traded many used cars in his life time.
Anyway, we popped that tape in the deck one day while sailing around in the sun,
trolling for dinner. That was it. It fit. We particularily loved listening to
Exotic Moog as we were dropping off to sleep in some bay, snug in our boat,
swaying at anchor. Playing the tape at night generally followed much kibitzing.
As it was a small boat, once bunked down, conversation would go on for a while in
the dark. Some nights it would take the five of us an hour to stop giggling. Then
after a lull someone would quietly request that Exotic Moog be played. In the
gentle arms of the bay, smelling the sea air and the mountains around us, we
would drift off to sleep on the melodies of Exotic Moog.
Years later, and many boats, that tape went missing. We are all grown now and
with children of our own. Two of us have our own boats and M&D are on yet another
boat.
My Request:
I would dearly love to get my hands on a copy of that tape. I want to give it as
gifts to my parents and siblings. At a later date I'll probably be interested in
other recordings of Denny and in exploring exotica in general. But for now, all I
really want is Exotic Moog.
Can anybody help me?
Greatful in advance
Annette

A few thoughts on Martini theory:
"Shaken, not stirred" was likely a little bit of a Bond in-joke. =
Martini's and a few other drinks are to be stirred for exactly the =
reasons you stated. The machanics of shaking are perfect for =
quick-chilling, but copious amounts of ice and a vigorous, but careful =
stir will more than compensate for the less eficient method. I think =
the confusion comes from the fact that other drinks ARE to be shaken. =
Imagine a warmish sidecar without the froth and the ice-chunks.... eeew! =
Drink quick though before they melt.
And then there is the whole bit about "very dry." Feh!
But I am preaching to the choir, I'm sure. Will check out the site, =
Steve. Have not been by Mr. Lucky's if FAR too long.

Subject: (exotica) Hiow did you get into Exotica??
I am very curious to know how all of you came to like exotica. With me it just
kinda happened as my musical tastes changed and evolved the more I came to
appreciate the lounge culture and be in it to an extent. For me it all started
when I took an interest in Frank Sinatra from there that led me to different
types and then other classic pop singers both male and female. from there i
owe a lot of my discovery of this music to the Ultra Lounge series from
captiol. I picked up a copy of Volume Four: Bachlor pad Royale. It had some
tracks on there that sounded very "normal" to me. Others where kinda normal
but the sound wasn't what I was used to hearing. It grew on me after awhile.
The name and packageing attracted me to this CD and thats what made me want to
buy it. I had no idea what to expect but the name sounded cool. From there I
got into Martin Denny and purchased both of his "taste of honey" LPs. Would
love to find the other orignal LPs to some of the tracks on that CD. Then I
heard Les Baxter playing in a store and from first listen thought some of it
was great. So I went out on what was then "a limb" for me a brought it not
knowing what else to expect. I liked it and my all time favroite track is
Quiet Village. I guess some of you experts are probably way past that by now.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy other tracks, particulary those pulled from
"Afircan Jazz" and "Jungle Jazz" which I have yet to find anywhere. I still
consider myself somewhat of a newbie and I am unsure still what is on topic
and what is off topic. I may have lots to talk about and just not know it
becuase I am afraid it isn't on topic or it might be the opposite, I don't
know. I did introduce myself on here ages ago but still lurk and ocassionally
offer a little something. In any case I try to learn what I can form the many
people on here.
So what got you into Exotica? I would be interested in finding out.
Jason

for example, we're working on a cover of led zepp's immigrant song with

it could be rock, pop, country, whatever. it could be something that would
be turned into a rock pop or whatever type tune. i'm just trying to

Could it have been (hushed voice, breath held...) the theme tune to
Pipkins, that wacky, zany, bizarre childrens' TV program from the mid
1970s? Featuring Hartley Hare, a red ball and that turtle thing, it was
fantastic and very strange and the music certainly sounded comedic, funky
and may well have had cartoon voices.
Or am I way off the mark?

Ron, et al,
I spoke with my friend who JUST 'graduated' from bartending school, and the
finger needs to be pointed at them. I asked her how she would make a
Zombie, and her answer, although close in recipe, was WAY off in alcohol
content. The modern day bartender 'counts' the liquor into the glass.
Every drink you will ever order has a total of 4 counts, be it a rum and
coke or a Long Island Iced Tea, unless its a double which the 5 liquor
drinks sometimes technically are. The rest is always juice/soda/mixer.
This makes it obvious that you should never order a drink with more than 2
different liquors in it, and if you can handle gin and tonic for the rest of
your lounging days, do it. Sticking with the high proof liquor is a good
idea too, forget the schnapps and -de methe's
I normally drink gimlets , but with your disdain for Rose's....
surfing the chaos,
Charlieman

Subject: (exotica) Tape exchange...why send the cassette body?
As oversea mail prices are getting higher and higher, I recommend to
send tapes without their bodies; I'm not talking of the box, but the
"cassette itself" without the tape in it. A 90 min. tape alone weighs 15
grams, the body 25 grams, 40 g together! An example:
The progressive rates of the German mail are 20 g, 50 g, 100 g etc.
An up to 20 g letter costs 2,- Marks, airmail 3,- Marks. (You could send
one tape without body, no tape with body)
An up to 50 g letter costs 2,20 DM, airmail 4,- DM (3 tapes without, 1
tape with)
Up to 100 g it's already 5 Marks, airmail 10,- Marks (6 tapes without, 2
tapes with) and so on. (1,- Mark = 0,60 US$)
You can calculate yourselves what this would bring; the cassette body
doesn't carry any important information anyway and as usually 2 people
exchange tapes, there will always be the empty body of the sent tape
waiting for its new content!
Remember: Every Dollar you save can be used for financing the purchase
of further *EXOTICA* records!

No. the best part is the photo of Natalie Wood on the cover. the music is
southern, dixie style. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
but if you want the dark and dirty sound you are probably after, avoid it.

For me it was a roundabout way.=20
I have a HUGE collection of bizarre, weird, horror/sci-fi movies from all =
over the world. A great deal of these films feature great vintage =
cocktail/exotica type music and I'd always enjoyed it.
Of course, finding CD's like Crippled Dick's "I Told You Not to Cry" was a =
godsend and I've been hopelessly hooked on this music ever since. =20
I can't recall what my first "exotica" music experience was, but it was =
probably after a friend loaned me a TON of records to listen to and record =
that he had picked up at flea markets. I had always been curious about =
those $1 records but was convinced that they were all scratched to hell =
and not worth even paying $1 for. Well, his collection changed all that, =
and all those Arthur Lyman LP's had me hooked too.

How do they enforce the sale?
How do I know that the seller is going to part with his/her item for the
low price?
What if the seller decides that the offer is not enough and witholds? What
makes the seller sell?
And how does the seller get my money?
And is all this still going to work overseas?
I know this info is available on their site, but I'd like to hear it from

This fashion question will be less discreet, because I think I can garner
more this way: I live in Boston, a mod-fashion-bomb if there ever was one.
For my cute boy, I am seeking clothes like the Monkees wear on MORE OF THE
MONKEES....wide belts, stovepipe pants, Beatle-esque boots, or something
Yardbirdsian. Are there good on-line sources for such threads? I know
when we go to NY we can find these things, but no plans to travel in the

I have been bidding for awhile now (way more than I should, but I
can't help myself ...), and my experience with the vast majority of
the sellers is that they are honest, helpful and very prompt with
shipment. Supposedly, the seller is legally obliged to sell (unless
there is a reserve that is not met -you can read about this on
http://www.ebay.com), as is the high bidder to remit $.
Internationalbilling can be problematic (I am currently experiencing
this slight inconvenience), you will, for instance, pay more for
shipping and IMO costs... but you can mail the seller before you bid
with questions regarding the item, etc.

The 1950s Music for TV Dinners has a much higher "terror level" then
the 60s version. I like them both but the 50s TV has some of my
favoite moments in exotica, Laurie Johnson's "Happy Go Lively" is
worth the price of the cd alone. Get this as soon as you find it.
I saw it for sale at http://www.cdnow.com for $12.95. I believe
webcrawler still has a $10 off coupon available if not yahoo has $5
off when you search for the word music.

A band called The Pipkins had a hit in the 70's called "Gimme Dat Ding".
Could this be the tune you heard?
I always thought one of the voices in that song sounded like Tyrone F.
Hornigh (?), the dirty-old-man character played by Artie Johnson on Laugh-In
(he was always putting the moves on Ruth Buzzi's frumpy old lady character).

If it was "Gimme Dat Ding", as in:
"Gimme dat ding,
Gimme dat, gimme, gimme dat
Gimme, gimme, gimme dat ding"
I thought I heard this as the theme to the Goldiggers with Dean Martin. I
remember seeing a bunch of women dancing about shaking their heads to and
fro. At six years old, though, I was waiting for the Marty Feldman comedy
bits to show up.

I have a record "Theme from the Avengers" by the Laurie Johnson Orchestra
that came out in 1966 on the Hanna-Barbera Records (HST 9506).
I mention this because it's one to be avoided. I got it through the mail
so I was unaware of the lame song selection; Call Me Irresponsible, et.
al.Furthermore Johnson really doesn't give the arrangements that extra push
to get it out of the rut of plain old easy listening fodder.<<
Frank, with all due respect, I disagree. I just happened upon this record
a few weeks ago, and while I agree it's nowhere near *stellar*, it should
not be avoided by anyone into Laurie Johnson! I love his arranging, a Brit
cross between Baxter and Mancini! And don't forget the swell "Minor Bossa
Nova" on there, too. Yeah, there are some ragtimey duds on there, but if
ya'll see it in record land cheap, get it! How often do you see Laurie
Johnson on vinyl!? I think his "Call Me Irresponsible" ( a lounge lizard
guilty pleasure) is pretty swingin', and for about 70% of this record, it's
theeeee now sound. But Frank, you have a whole lotta Laurie, and I have
woefully little, so I do defer to you on that "note."
> I does have
the original version of the Avengers theme and maybe one or two okay cuts
which is why I keep it. And what's with all the reverb, especially on the
strings, in Brit soundtrack music?
Reverb!? Oh yes, daddy! I loves me dat reverb! Can't get enough...

will be EASIER FOR THOSE INTERESTED TO GO THERE AND READ HOW IT WORKS INSTEAD

Oh, and what have I got from there?
About 10 music related items (78's mostly), over 15 cocktail shakers and a few

It's fun but the advertising lately have really driven the prices WAY UP. And

I don't know anything about Yukari Fresh other then a song on one of

Subject: Re: (exotica) EBAY
I have been involved in an Ebay discussion by certain southsea artefact
collectors lately. The main concern - and I see this coming up for
exotica records as well - was, that this relatively small group would
drive up the prices by competing with each other. Now since this
ebay-post the same thing can be expected about biding over exotica
records. The point is that you can't really do much about it, as the
biding is anonymous. But I think it's kind of silly to discuss records
here and then rush into the ebay pages, starting a murderous competion
to get the said records. Or imagening I outbid, say, Brian over a
certain record that he wanted to send me as present. Things like that
can happen. So I decided the same that I decided for those polynesian
collector's items: I just don't do ebay. I rather NOT collect.
Oh, ...I DID start to collect pics of these items! I see myself as a
*JPEG-collector* now! Any Exotica anybody?
