Don't know about that; I do have a record distributed by Realistic
called "TV Potpourri" by Dick Dia and his Orchestra (no cover,
unfortunately). It has a version of the theme from "Combat" that sounds
like it is from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. His version of "Bonnanza" is
done latin style. Ole.
That is a grerat rekkid, Tom. Good job!
Bewitched and the Perry Mason Theme too

I have the Avengers, New Avengers and the Professionals on a Laurie Johnson
LP. It is superb and features the Avengers and the New Avengers theme music
as well as the Professionals theme, which is super cool. This LP is not too
dificult to find and not too expensive. There is another, older LP called
'Music from The Avengers' (I think) which is a late 60s soundtrack LP. This
is harder to find and more expensive and came out just after the original
Avengers.
I'd go for the later LP but then if you're a serious Avengers collector,
you'll want the original for its very 60s picture of Steed and Purdie on
the cover.

Laurie Johnson did quite a lot of production music in his lifetime and there
are a fair ammount of his tracks spread over the Sound Gallery and Music For

Varese has a CD in print by Johnson called "The Avengers" of music
"composed and conducted by Laurie Johnson" -- these are NOT original
soundtrack recordings, however, but re-recordings done by Laurie with the
London Studio Orchestra in 1980. Not bad, and worth getting if you're a
Johnson/Avengers fan. In addtiona to Avengers and New Avengers music, it
also has music from other Johnson scores (Dr. Strangelove, First Men In
the Moon, Capt. Kronos Vampire Hunter, & Hedda). Look for this CD in the
soundtrack bins, but I don't think an *actual soundtrack* exists, though.
Probably the coolest Johnson material on CD is to be found on Scamp's two
MUSIC FOR TV DINNERS and SOUND GALLERY VOL.2 compilations though.
I've got ONE album by him (part of EMI's British Studio2 series) called
"Something's Coming" (the West Side Story song) that's rather nifty, and
believe he did several such albums in the UK.
Was I the only one who saw "Laurie Johnson" in the Avengers composer
credits and thought "Laurie" was a *woman*? In my adolescent youth while
discovering The Avengers, I was sort of hoping "Laurie Johnson" was,
like, the Emma Peel of the male-dominated 60s composer scene...some
exotic swingin' bird in a sports car with mod tunes blaring from the
radio, speeding on her way from scoring The Avengers to do Dr.
Strangelove. It was shattering to eventually see a photo of the guy.

I have a record "Theme from the Avengers" by the Laurie Johnson Orchestra
that came out in 1966 on the Hanna-Barbera Records (HST 9506).
I mention this because it's one to be avoided. I got it through the mail
so I was unaware of the lame song selection; Call Me Irresponsible, et.
al.
Furthermore Johnson really doesn't give the arrangements that extra push
to get it out of the rut of plain old easy listening fodder. I does have
the original version of the Avengers theme and maybe one or two okay cuts
which is why I keep it. And what's with all the reverb, especially on the
strings, in Brit soundtrack music?
I highly recommend the book The Complete Avengers by Dave Rogers. Aside
from the episode by episode guide, there is a discograpy of Avengers
related recordings. As far as TV show compendiums go this one is first
rate.

USA serves up "Barbarella" (1967) on Friday afternoon at 2:00pm (eastern
standard time). I really should catch one of these "broadcast" showings,
just to see how they treat the opening title sequence.
Friday afternoon at 4:00pm and Saturday morning at 4:00am and Noon, Bravo
commercially interrupts Bunuel's prank classic, "The Discreet Charm Of The
Bourgeoisie" (1972).
AMC gives "Hot Rod Gang" (1958) another spin, late Saturday at 10:00pm and
4:00am. John Ashley and Jody Fair star, but Gene Vincent steals the show.
"Queen Of Outer Space" (1958) -- a standard of the "male astronauts land on
planet of sexy women" genre. Yes, this is the one with Zsa Zsa Gabor. Lots
of hand-me-down sets and props, and directed by 3 Stooges vet, Edward
Bernds. TNT serves this up EARLY Sunday morning at 4:00 or 4:15am. TNT is
notoriously unreliable for accurate airtimes.

no.
For example, while sentimental journey is on the Infinity in Sound 2-fer...AND
on Esquivel! SABPM (cut 1), cut 2 from Esquivel! is not on any of the three
2-fers. There are more examples. The two comps were pulled from Esquivel
recordings from 1958 to 1967. Infinity in Sound 1 1960, 2-1961, Exploring
New Sound-1959, Strings A-Flame-1959, Other Worlds Other Sounds-1958, and
Four Corners of the World-1958.
Obviously, BMG and Bar-None never fulfilled their promise of more, which
probably would have made the comps superfluous. Each of the existing
two-fers *SAYS* these CDs are also available: Latin-Esque/See It In Sound,
The Genius of Esquivel/Esquivel! 1968 and To Love Again/Early Mexican
Recordings. I believe the comment was made on this list that these
promised CDs *HAVE NOT YET* materialized because sales on the first three
were underwhelming.
I think you would need all of the barnone CDs (6 now), the RCA cd (cabaret
manana) and the one reprise CD to have the completest audio picture on cd.
True, there are repeats. Certainly if there other legal CDs out there
which give us more, I'd want to know.
If we want to moan about Capitol, we should also complain about the
unfulfilled promises of Bar/None and BMG. Still, if the numbers weren't
there to begin with, I can understand the problem. I also wish BMG had
gone further than just three in its Space Age Pop series.

The answers so far pretty much covered what I would have said except for
my latest acquisition. Mr. Johnson put out an album about the time he did
the Avengers music (a bit before, actually, in 1964) which is definitely
cut from the same cloth: Introducing England's New Big Band Sound, The
Laurie Johnson Orchestra. It is Colpix SCP 471 (stereo) or CP 471 (hi fi
mono). This album was more interesting than the HB release mentioned
previously with standards such as Bali Ha'i, South of the Border and Pagan
Love Song but also originals "Twango" and "Nevada".

I read in one of the Public Television trade magazines that Diana Rigg will be
hosting an entire upcoming episode of Mystery! while wearing the same
leather/latex cat suit that she wore 30 years ago on the Avengers. Either
that or Patrick Macnee was going to guest host wearing the cat suit? Those
wacky Brit, septuagenarian, cross-dressers.

I am a cocktail SNOB.=20
So spoiled am I, that I cannot stomach drinks made with or Roses lime =
juice (except in the FEW drinks that call for that syrup) or the bane of =
all imbibers, "sweet n sour" mixes. I wince at the very idea of a Vodka =
Martini (there IS a drink that combines vodka and vermouth, but a =
Martini it is NOT.) Needless to say, I am impossible to please at a =
run-of-the-mill bar where anyone with a pulse and a Mr. Boston's =
(ptooeee!) guide can be a "bartender." In spite of news to the contrary, =
the current state of cocktail is a TRAVESTY because almost nobody =
remembers what it was like before the advent of the fern-bar in the =
70's.
I don't get out much, so I am hoping there is someone that can tell me =
if there are still places a body can go and get a REAL cocktail, made by =
a seasoned, proud, skilled mixologist. I am willing to travel.
For a shinig example of alcoholic excellence, try the HOTWIRED cocktail =
website, written by the self titled Alchemist, Paul Harrington. =
http://www.hotwired.com/cocktail/ A wonderful, witty, and =
well-constructed site full of information, history and lore. It's a =
place where one can get reacquainted with the nearly-lost notion of the =
cocktail as cuisine - in need of the same skill and attention to detail =
as a souffle' or a roast. It's a fascinating read, even if one does not =
care to drink.
Hope to hear that there are still clean well-lit places to drink.

From what I hear, our own Brother Cleve is Monday's Mixologist at a swanky
newly (and tastefully) renovated spot in Cambridge called the "B-Side". I
stopped in last Saturday night and it was indeed well done, still in old
working stiff fashion, but with the old ceilings and wainscotted walls re-
exposed and cleaned up to fit the style it originally reflected--that of an
1930's neighborhood watering hole, and abslolutely NOT the fern-bar look you
so accurately describe. The bar is named after the flip sides of old 45 RPM
records which the owners--former underwriters of my old soul radio show--claim
are so often better than the "A-Side".......I'm going to try to head over
Monday before Combustible Edison goes on the road to have a couple
of........Combustible Edisons ;-) Jimmy Botticelli

Tough drink, them Combustible Edisons. Even in the dark of winter, it's =
hard to take the bitterness of Campari combined with the elevated =
temperature of the warm brandy. (Although, I only made them once, and =
may be out of my league with flaming drinks)
I liked the non-flaming version better - the Edisonian. Cold is GOOOD =
when it comes to cocktails, as far as I am concerned.
I said I was willing to travel - though Mass is a BIT of the beaten path =
for me. Any CA listers got a good tip for me?
There has GOT to be a really good bar in SF. I've been to the Lilo =
Lounge. Nice atmosphere, but had to tell the bartender how to make a Gin =
Rickey. Better than most. At least I was confident enough in her =
abilities to ASK. Bimbo's was not too bad, and in fairness to both, I =
was there during high-traffic times, so I can imagine one cannot expect =
the same drink as when there is not such a burden on the bartender.

I hear that there has been a rush of interest in this VERY generous =
offer - and rightly so!
Describe it? Hmmm.... Very odd sounding early attempt at overdubbing =
WAY before the the common use of multitrack recorders. Danny G made the =
record by recording it one instrument at a time, bouncing the tracks =
from one deck to another. This "multi-pass" approach makes for a =
completely different sound because the first tracks recorded had to =
survive multiple generations of recording. Introspective and atmospheric =
and very different. Dena's sparse vocals are breathy and haunting. My =
ragged copy of this rekkit is one of my greatest treasures.
Found it at a garage sale and bought it cuz I liked the cover and it had =
a letter from Mamie Eisenhower (reputed Three Suns fan) on the back.
SCORE!

The worst thing is that since the Cocktail revolution, things have gotten
worse, not better. I don't agree with shaking a martini, although I
understand the the theory. The problem is that the drink sits in the shaker
much too long and the ice is to small so you get a watery drink, or even
worse, unsightly specks of ice floating on top of a murky drink. At least
before, you'd get something not that cold, but much stronger and more
flavorful.
My further thoughts, if you're inclined, are here:
