HONOLULU (AP) -- Poomaikelani Kawananakoa, a descendant of Hawaii's
royalty and a leader in Honolulu's publishing and theater fields, died
Monday. She was 71.
Kawananakoa founded Hui Hanai to support the center's activities and help
children in need and served as president of the Hawaiian Civic Club of
Honolulu.
She also started Mana Publishing Company, which is best known for the
publications of ``Ano Ano: The Seed'' and ``Princess Kaiulani: The Last Hope
of Hawaii's Monarchy.''
As a theatrical entrepreneur, she formed Angel Inc., which brought to
Hawaii such performers as Luciano Pavarotti, The Alvin Ailey Dancers, Ella
Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Roberta Peters and Four Girls Four group,
including Rosemary Clooney and Helen
O'Connell.

I actually prefer "Bubbles" to "Kites are Fun" as compilations. There =
are only 4 different tracks on the "Kites" comp from the "Bubbles" comp. =
"Raindrops", the new compilation on Siesta is very different from the oth=

The Free Design have 7 LPs, 6 have been reissued in Japan. All have diffe=
rent tracks that are not featured on the compilations. But it is getting =
to be the case that if you buy the Siesta compilations, you really don't =
need to buy the LPs. "Sing for a Very Important People" actually features=
tracks from other Free Design LPs. There are only like 3 original tracks=
on them, and 2 of those are on "Raindrops", I think. The compilations =
are a good overview and much cheaper than the Japanese reissues - if you =
can even find them, which is not easy.

Not that I've seen, and I agree that the liner notes on the Verese comp =
are excellent, something sadly missing from the two Siesta comps.
Hope this info helps. I am a tragic completist Free Design fan that is =
having a hellish time trying to afford the LPs/reissue CDs...

I heard a rumour that there will soon be a Capital release of a record
Keely Smith and Billy May recorded two years ago, presumably a
(forshadowing) Frank Sinatra tribute. Any skinny on this from anyone on
this list? I am sorry I wasn't on the list when Frank died. At least I
was among friends and family, but I need *ya'll*, too!

Okay, I've been listening to this album a lot lately - it's really good =
except for the damn "march" tune as the final cut on side b - from some =
"war film."
What was very interesting are the liner notes for one particular song on =
side b, a "spooky" tune with two pianos, one of which "echoes" or =
"answers" the first one from what sounds like the depths of a lagoon on =
the left channel, and is slightly out of tune. The liner notes mention =
that this musical style was used on another song (of that era) that =
actually had it "banned" (I'm assuming from air play??). =20
Anybody know what the hell I'm talking about? Can anybody read the liner =
notes and add to my admittedly sketchy description? (Sorry!) I didn't =
quite understand the notes on that one......
But that tune is really cool, and way "spooky." There's a couple of =
tracks like that on Bwana-a.

Interesting, because around Halloween, LA's long-established pirate station

I was hoping someone on this list might know something about this CD, as
there is really no information on it. It has no catalogue number or
label, all of the liner notes are in German (and are highly amusing,
from what I've been able to translate so far), and it's manufactured in
the Netherlands. I think the name "Sir Henry" may refer to the horse
pictured on the cover, but I'm not sure.
It's basically organs and a rhythm machine, doing versions (some
instrumental, some with vocals) of Watermelon Man, and the William Tell
Rhumba, along with quite a few medleys of all sorts of strange stuff. A
lot of the tracks are credited with arrangements by Nijenhuis. Any idea
who this is?
Anyways, this CD would be a very welcome addition to any collection of
those of us on the list who love cheesy organ stuff!

Along with Free Design and the Association, let us not forget Orpheus and The
Sunshine Company. Orpheus has been re-released as part of the Boss-Town Sound

all...A classic soft-pop comp oughta be designed by listers. Only ground rule:
the selections have to have been released before the "Soft Rock Radio" failure
of the Late 7T's (Which reminds me of a Boston soft rock station contest
calling for slogans to promote the station with on Billboards...I submitted
"Steely Dan, without the Heavy Metal"..The winner however was "Linda

have the phrase_____ followed by "without" then the phrase completer_____.

I gotta ask if anyone has ever seen the soundtrack to this movie. Here's
the deal. It's from 1972(I think), written and directed by, and starring
Peter Carpenter(whoever he is, he looks like a low-rent Greg Brady or Tom
Jones-sings like Tom-but not as well).
It is not, as the title suggest, a "horror" movie(though it is truely
horrible in a b-movie way)...but the sad saga of a wanna-be "rock" star.
It has great-horrible rock numbers that sound like a cross between the
Who's "Real Me" and Dudley Moore's "Love Me." I think it's on Motown(!)
Has anyone ever seen the movie, if not the soundtrack? It's so bad and
After School Special-esque, that it's totally engaging!

First, Don Tiki rules.
And you can get their album at www.cdnow.com, relatively inexpensively.
I bought mine directly from them though and they mailed it to me with
confetti, which CDNow probably doesn't provide.
As for 'sampling' someone else's work, it's been going on for centuries.
Everytime you hear a 'rhapsody on a theme of...', so not to knock JJ
Perrey, but I don't think we can credit him with pre-inventing sampling.
Anyway, that's my four cents.

anyone out there compare either of these bands with the Design?
I've also still to hear anything by the Star-Scape Singers which was

I guess one of the reasons why the Free Design sounded so instantly
familiar to me when I heard them a few days ago was that about a month ago
I finally broke down and started making myself compilation tapes of all
this multi-voiced, choir type of stuff I've picked up - accidentally? -
over the last couple of years.
Having said that, I think you'd have to talk about more than just vocal
arrangement to discuss what's cool about them. You'd have to talk about
the material, the tunes.
But if you want to talk about vocal arrangements...
I can see how Free Design could have been influenced by the Hi-Lo's. (I
don't have any Singers Unlimited.) I could also see comparisons to the
Kirby Stone Four or the Clef Dwellers. (Maybe even Lambert, Hendricks and
Ross?)
But even though they chose to record with Enoch Light - a decision which I
still find kinda surprising - I don't think it was because they were
influenced by the Ray Charles Singers or the Enoch Light Singers. Maybe
the Kissin Cousin but that's a stretch too I think.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear Free Design cite vocal influences from
almost ANY multi-voiced group of the fifties. But I would be very
surprised if they cited any influences from the multi-voice things that
went on in the sixties.
Okay maybe the Association, the Mamas and the Papas, The Fifth Dimension
(especially the way they do "Sunshine of your Love").
And if I wanted to stretch it, I'd say that I have cuts by the New Christy
Minstrels and The Lettermen that wouldn't embarrass themselves on a
compilation tape with the Free Design.
But the way that multi-voice thing changed from the fifties to the sixties
is pretty striking. Just look at Ray Conniff. Yeah we've been here before
on this list. And if you like "Happiness is" by Ray, well okay but it's
not for the vocal ARRANGEMENTS I don't think.
Ray's wordless vocal records of the fifties are legitimately cool I think.
But the sixties stuff just sounds like a choir singing in unison. I can't
say that there's NO arrangements or harmonies going on but it certainly got
"simpler".
I don't know why that change happened. My guess is that those sixties
records were designed around covering certain tunes and not so much around
"the music".
Oh and how about Anita Kerr? I have a sixties record where the Anita Kerr
singers do "The Beat Goes On" and it's a classic but as far as the vocal
arrangements go, there's not much happening compared to her great "We Dig
Mancini" record. All I can think is that she didn't think the audience who
were looking for a "softer" version of Sonny and Cher cared all that much
about vocal arrangements.
Anyway, like I said, I do think that the vocal arrangements are only part
of what people must be liking in the Free Design. But it is interesting
that they were such "throwbacks" in certain ways.
Nat

Carpenter movie called Blood Mania that's even worse, if that's possible.
At least Point of Terror has Dyanne (Ilsa) Thorne, and that vile but catchy
song.
I actually bought a copy (it was real cheap), and there's a whole reel in the
middle that repeats-and nobody noticed! According to Shock X-press, Carpenter
also shows up at the beginning of Russ Meyer's Vixen, as well as some other
obscure softcore appearences. I kinda doubt that there's a soundtrack lp...
geez...now i guess i gotta watch it again...

His name is actually John Henry Nijenhuis. He's a German/Canadian (?)
keyboardist who dropped by the studio a few weeks ago, and ended up recording
some parts for the next Tipsy album. As far as I know, he plays a lot for
theatre in Germany, and occasionally backs up members of Einstuerzende
Neubauten. He's a very skillful musician, but he seems to be really into a
kind of self-conscious kitsch on his own releases (at least, the ones I heard)
that I can't quite relate to.

*Roman Cycowski
BERLIN (AP) -- Roman Cycowski, the last surviving member of the Comedian
Harmonists, a legendary vocal group from the 1920s and 1930s that was forced
apart by the Nazis, died Monday. He was 97.
The six-member group had a distinctive, mainly a cappella sound that made
them an overnight sensation. They made more than a dozen films and sold
millions of records from 1927 to 1935 with hits such as ``Mein kleiner
gruener Kaktus'' (My Little Green Cactus).
They began facing problems after the Nazis came to power in 1933 because
three of the Comedian Harmonists, including Cycowski, were Jewish. The group
began losing engagements because Jews were increasingly banned from
professions, including appearing on stage.
The Comedian Harmonists went on a world tour in late 1934, but by the time
they returned home, the Nazis no longer allowed them on stage at all, and
they decided to disband.
*Francis A. Perry Jr.
MILLIS, Mass. (AP) -- Francis A. Perry Jr., a one-time trumpet player for
the Lawrence Welk Orchestra who became one of the first U.S. paratroopers in
World War II, died Sunday. He was 83.
During the 1930s, Perry played trumpet in New England and toured nationally
with the Dan Murphy Band. In 1939, he filled in with the Lawrence Welk
Orchestra, but declined Welk's offer for a regular job.
He joined the Marines during World War II, and was one of the first to be
trained as a paratrooper. He was shot during the Solomon Islands campaign
and was unconscious for three weeks. He returned to duty and participated in
the assault on Iwo Jima, where nearly 6,000 Marines were killed in 1945.

" One of the most intriguing sociocultural characteristics of Vegas, this
most American of cities, is that not only does it ignore its history (as
Atlanta does), it goes to great lengths to destroy its own past with
dynamite. Vegas has, in recent years, become the world capital of building
implosions, as old 1,000-room hotels have made way for new 4,000-room
hotels. Implosions have become Nevada's biggest spectator sport. Want proof?
Head for the Web site of Vegas's other paper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal,
and check out its awesome video collection of implosions.
What fun! Nothing like this exists anywhere else online. Kaboom! There goes
the Sands. Kaboom! So long, Landmark. Kaboom! The Aladdin Hotel, the holy
spot where Elvis married Priscilla, is reduced to rubble to make way for the
New Aladdin. I could watch these clips all day long."

Free Design's two Siesta compilations, including the new Raindrops
are available for a $13 price tag as are all other Siesta releases at
Roundabout Records. PO box 76302, Washington DC 20013-6302 PH
(202) 543-5465
I know If Dusty Groove is out of it Other Music is carrying Sing For
Very Important People. This Japanese cd is wonderful, way way cute pop.
I got my Algebra Spaghetti cd from Roundabout, this collection
reminds me of Free Design Sing for Very Important People meets the
Harpers Bizarre. Easy feeling groovy cutesy vocal pop with a touch
of late 60's pop psychedelia. I can't believe this cd, its really off
the wall! Its full of surprises Go Siesta Go! Its produced so well by
the great great Louis Philippe (Jackie Girl) & Richard Preston.
>
Harpers Bizarre and Free Design mix well together in my mind. The
Siesta lable seems to be carrying on the easy pop traditions very well
in these modern times. For modern soft pop I like the Legendary Jim
Ruiz, album "Sniff" (Siesta 86) or La Buena Vida's albums on Siesta.
These both contain soft melodies, soft vocals and easy modern pop
sound. It seems to me now whenever I listen to college radio that
Free Design fits right in wit a lot of soft pop bands out there today.
I believe that the easy sound is becoming a major influence in modern
pop, especially indie pop.

Subject: (exotica) Baby Pop, Ultra Chicks Vol 3
Received a few wonderful new releases from Other music.
"Baby Pop", Ultra Chicks Vol 3 is my favorite of the series. This
album continues the upbeat now sound 60's girl vocal pop music of the
previous 2 releases. Besides France we get songs from Quebec, and a
song each from Germany (France Gall sings "Merci, Herr Marquis") Peru,
Spain, Italy, Uk, and USA(Tuesday Weld does "Are You the Boy")
A new compilation "Sexopolis" (1997 Fantomas 002) boot? "Tracks From
the French Funky Pop Scene Compiled by DJ BNX" This is a great cd of
the now sound form the 70s Its a 62 minute ride of some great songs,
now sound instrumentals, some wordless vocals, and lots of upbeat
vocals sung in French and a few jazz songs, not too much hard funk,
its a soft easy funk feel on a few of the tracks. Its more of a now
sound found on Easy Tempo and Irma with a couple of jazz influenced
songs. I recognized only 2 songs, one from the haschhisch Party and
one by Michel Legrand. The sound quality and song selection remind me
of a great Irma release except in French. I especially like Guy
Boyer's "Bongo & Sound" its all over the place it even has a sitar.
There's another song where a singer speaks desperately in French with
a cool exotic now sound background playing under her cries of
desperation.
On Plastic Records (1998) comes "Spectrum" "Thrilling 60's Film Noir
Themes" Another great selection especially for somebody new to the
scene. The selections contain a lot of songs on other comps, Mission
by Schifrin, or big names : Duke Elington"Octupaca", John Barry,"On
Her Majesties Secret Service. Theres enough obscure cuts to please
everybody. I know Dusty Groove also carries this.
Also got, "Ursula 1000" (1998) no label listed, theres white paper on
the cd itself, that says Ursula 1000! This is generally a primitive
cd of underproduced sounds on a limited budget. I do not half of the
songs on the 75 minute cd but some of the songs are sure to please
some listers. It generally has the sound of under produced drum n
bass rap songs with applied to samples of exotica, no vocals, some
wordless vocals. I do like a few songs a lot, theres a really fun
version on ma na ma na, sampling Dimitri. I especially like the last
song, It takes a snippet of exotica and repeats it endlessly. The
sampling on this cd makes me appreciate the genius and artistry of
Tipsy & Dimitri from Paris.
Also received the cd "nymphomania" , "A collection of Sexy European
Gogo Music from the 60's" made in Germany (1998) on a label? called
sexy hexy media berlin, SH 301 CD, Primitive wild soundtracks from b
films in Germany? Nothing too extraordinary, the sound is along the
lines of the " Betty Page, Jungle Girl" album.
From Dustygroove I finally got the "Sesso Matto experience" on Easy
Tempo (1997) and I'm blown away by the Karminsky Experiece's remix.
The whole album is a remix of the song Sesso Matto
Along the same lines I also received the "Easy Tempo Experience" "a
new cinematic experience" (1998 Right Tempo) Pushing the boundries of
exotica into the electronica club sound, this is a great cd if you
enjoy some modern ambient beats mixed with your exotica. My only
complaint is its contains Ma na ma na from the Karminsky Experience
which is on the Ma Na ma NA Easy Tempo remix cd. Other then that
there's the wonderful High LLamas remixing "Lady Mafgnolia" by P
Umliani that worth the price of the cd alone.
Easy Listening to an awful lot of music in the Big Easy

Oh that guy. I haven't seen his name around lately so maybe he is playing
more in Germany these days but he used to play around Toronto and I guess I
just assumed he was (basically) from here. But if he's in Germany now,
that kind of makes sense to me. I have an image of a scene that exists in
Germany based on the Torontonians that have ended up there over the years
and he certainly fits right in. He used to play a lot at this place
called... oh the Alzheimer's is setting in.. but it was basically a
hole-in-the-wall experimental film theater cum bicycle repair shop and they
would show German silent film classics and this guy would play piano to
accompany them. (I saw films there AND got my bike repaired but never at
the same time.) He would be dressed formally and yeah, it was clear that
here was a guy with blah blah "classical training".
I can see the thing about "self conscious kitsch" based on my experience
but then again, one man's self-conscious kitsch is another man's... better
not finish that sentence on this list.
