I single this one out for its Generation X kitsch...irony, etc. I would also
compare and contrast it with Minor Threat's _Out of Step_ which features
a flock of white sheep nicely done in watercolor with a crayon-like drawing
of a black sheep going the other way...one is poetry...both are punk. But
what is really punk? And I suppose what does this have to do with exotica?
Perhaps nothing...but I just thought I'd offer my 1/2 cents worth on peoples notions
of funny...funny is not a lame pun such as "Heavy Petting Zoo" nor is it
funny to depict explicit sex with sheep on your album cover...nor is it punk
rock...it is however, an example of tomorrow's cheese...today.

CANNES, France, Nov 9 (AFP) - Jean Marais, the French film star of the
1940s and 1950s, has died aged 84, town hall officials said Monday.
The actor died Sunday in hospital in this Riviera city shortly after
being brought in for treatment from nearby Vallauris, where he had a house.
Marais was catapulted to fame by his friend, the poet and film-maker Jean
Cocteau.
Born Jean Villain in Cherbourg, northern France, on December 11, 1913,
Marais was the most popular young male lead in wartime France and the star
in Cocteau films from "La Belle et la Bete" in 1945 through to "Le Testament
d'Orphee", made in 1960.

Strange how these things happen. I was working in a seedy area of Boston
this summer, outside the hip(?) Cambridge and Newbury Street areas. I
passed by a printer shop, of which the owner is also some kinda VOLARE
night-club singer. So, on the window, there was this dual flyer of him and
*Sam Butera* at this spagetti-supper-and-entertainment-thing in the
Italian-North End Section. Well, I was all primed to go, but my betrothed
had torn ligaments days before. AK.
That's not the point...I want to know if any North Easterners went to this,
and if Sam Butera does this kind of Spagetti Supper-club thing often? I
was gonna die if I heard Keely Smith made a surprise appearance(anyone see
her recently? Is she in good voice? Gawd, I love her!)
You hear about this stuff, I chased a rumour in Tampa for awhile that Julie
London had performed in a Ramada Inn Lounge. And, if there is a way to
know when Sam comes again(I don't go by that print shop anymore,) I'l like
a source.
One more question, sorry! Did Julie London ever record NOONE EVER TELLS
YOU?

Don Tiki Just got a plug on Dr. Demento this weekend - He played DT in the
background during an announce break and mentioned the music. Neato!
I have been tuning in DR Demento on the web and rebroadcasting him on
104.1 - for those of you who don't know, I have been running a pirate radio
station for 10 years in the SJ bay area - UNTILL LAST NIGHT. The FCC
came by for a visit.
I only got a warning, but the jig is UP, and I am in shock. It's been my
creative
outlet for years. Got some newpaper attention out of it along the way and
numerous
mentions in the local weekly rag. Now, poof! Gone. Poor me.

No way. I ws running clean, clean, CLEAN. No interference here.
Some punk kid has been raising hell in the area, so the FCC has been
the area a LOT recently. I was on at the wrong time. Phooey!
I have redoubled my efforts to get the transmitter off the property
and up into the hills somewhere. Finding some kind soul with a
piece of property will allow me to continue, but avoid further
trouble. If the FCC visits the transmitter site, they can always
feign ignorance. The FCC is rather toothless...It takes a lot
to get them to do anything nasty.
Any takers with a view to the Silicon Valley? ; >

Subject: (exotica) Court OKs Royalties for 'Louie, Louie'
By Laurie Asseo
Associated Press Writer
Monday, November 9, 1998; 11:07 a.m. EST
For more than 30 years, the Kingsmen got no royalties from their classic
recording of the garage-band standard ``Louie, Louie.'' Today, the
Supreme Court let stand a ruling that finally let them collect.
The court, without comment, rejected an appeal by two companies that
held
the rights to the recording and admitted they paid no royalties to the
band.
The Kingsmen's 1963 version was not the first recording of ``Louie,
Louie,'' and it wasn't exactly the most on-key -- but it was a massive
hit and has been a party favorite ever since. Federal officials launched
an obscenity investigation of the band's recording but finally declared
it ``unintelligible at any speed.''
The band signed a contract in 1968 that was supposed to pay its members
9 percent of the profits or licensing fees from the record. But the
Kingsmen got nothing, and in 1993 they sued Gusto Records and GML, which
owned the rights to the recording.
After the companies' lawyer acknowledged they paid ``not a single dime
for 30 years,'' a federal judge canceled the 1968 contract and granted
the musicians the right to all royalties from the time they sued. The
judge also held the companies in contempt when they refused to surrender
the master recording.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld those rulings last April.
The companies subsequently turned over the master recording and paid
overdue royalties of roughly a few hundred thousand dollars, said
Kingsmen's lawyer Scott Edelman.
The band members, most of whom live in the Seattle area and who still go
on tour, ``are delighted to finally have the masters back in their
control after not getting any royalties and getting the run-around,''
Edelman said in an interview.
In the appeal acted on today, the Nashville-based companies' lawyers
argued that the case did not belong in a California court. The fact that
the companies signed licensing agreements for ``Louie, Louie'' with
California-based firms was not enough to justify having the case heard
in
that state, the appeal said.
``Louie, Louie'' was written in the 1950s by Richard Berry, who sold it
for a small sum. In 1986, an artists' rights group helped Berry collect
about $2 million in royalties.
The case is Gusto Records vs. Peterson, 98-449.

Being one of the resident geezers on this list, allow me to recall the day the
Kingsmen bus pulled onto my high school quadrangle in Lexington, MA to play an
after school concert one Friday afternoon in autumn, 1965, a full two years
after Louie Louie changed the world. Before they were allowed to play they
were required to come over the school intercom and denounce all reported dirty
lyrics in the song "Louie Louie"..Jimmy/"felt my bone high in her hair"

If you want the short version:
It was a magical evening. Bimbo's is such a singularly wonderful place,
I'd go back to watch DOGS FIGHT. Combustible Edison was the perfect
mixer... The a synergy not unlike Vermouth and REALLY COLD Gin.
If you want the LONG version, read on.
It was one of those days after one of those weekends. I was NOT feeling
like making the trip into the city, but I had goaded a friend into
buying a ticket, so there was no backing out. He was a little late, and
I needed a cocktail to get me jumpstarted, so I mixed a couple of smart
little planters cocktails (Rum, lemon, grenadine)
and got my mojo workin.
Finding a parking spot one measly block from Bimbo's was an auspicious
beginning. I had never been , and the big sign in front
told me I was in for a treat. Walking in, I felt like a bumpkin
straight off the bus from Iowa- (Listers in the heartland will please
excuse the expression) slackjawed and unprepared for the beauty and
oppulence of the club. Alabaster sculpture adorn the forier, a
coat-check girl in the lobby graciously accepted my coat and pardoned my
wide-eyed disbelief at such a anachronistic convenience.
I part the thick velvet curtain and drink-in the main room: a huge, dark
candle-lit expanse that will forever serve me as a metaphor for heaven.
Big and inviting, and filled with the sound of Combustible Edision in
full...uhhh...swank, and populated with the most sexy people in the
world all dressed up and as happy to be steeped in the groove as I was.
It was like beig in an old "Thin Man"
movie, complete with middle-aged bow-tied busboys hustling buckets of
ice to the beautifully well-stocked bar, and cocktail waitresses, REAL
cocktail waitresses whizzing through the crowd
like bees going between the hive and the clover.
There were no seats to be had, but I did not really care, It gave me
chance to go to the other bar and soak up some more of this fantastic
space. The main bar is in a room large enough to easily accommodate 200
standing. Behind the bar were two friendly, efficient, knowlegeble
mixologists framed by one helluvan impressive stone wall with recessed
lighting and an aquarium that
is rumored to be inhabited by a mermaid that comes out for special
occasions. (She is a live, partially nude mermaid that somehow gets
projected into a dark cave in the rocks...That's what I'm told.)
I could have gone to the bar in the main room, but this is where I
returned several times for refreshment - even without the prismatic
siren.
As for the music, well, you could not POSSIBLY find a better band than
ComEd for a night/place like this. I am woefully unfamiliar with their
recorded efforts, and have untill recently eschewed the
neo-retro-cocktail bands, (or whatever the kids are calling it these
days) not because I thought less of it, it's just that I am still trying
to get a grip on the all the wonderful instro pop that came out of the
50's and 60's. Boy did I learn a trick or two this Monday night! The
first complete tune I heard was a thing called "Vertigo,"
which conjured up images of "Baby Elephant Walk." Upbeat and full of
homages to Mancini's SOUND: those light touches of timbral whimsy. Next
was "Hot and Bothered" which again brought to mind the texture of
another song, this time "Millionaires Holiday, " but with space sounds
and Ms. Banquette's scatting. This is when I leaned over to my friend
and explained that this is what the inside of my head has sounded like
since third grade. He seemed to understand.

Continued.....
I seemed to have been missing a lot of the music, because my eyes and
mind were wandering about, looking...thinking...thinking...looking... In
most cases it would be a criticism that the music was unable to capture
my attention. But tonight Ms. Banquette was in beautiful voice, and the
dreamy "Seduction" was the cloud that carried me away. I don't think I
was alone. The next number was introduced by the Millionaire who needed
repeat himself to get the proper reaction from the crowd, "I don't think
you heard me, I said this next number features THE SOPRANO MELODICA!" We
were much more impressed and enthusiastic the second time, having had a
chance to emerge from our reverie. I did not catch te name of the song,
but judging from the sound it HAD to have the word "Paris" in the title.
Here was the turning point as they launched into a song called "Doors
Erupt(?)" A decidedly more modern vibe, though ironically it had a very
primative jungly-type of edge to it. This got the twirly dancers to the
right of the stage into full-trance. I wish I knew the name of the next
song, based, according to the Millionaire, on a 60's german sci-fi
theme. He counts down in Deutsch, and they are OFF, baby! "Hellraiser"
brought Lilly back to the bongos and "Shot in the Dark finally gave Br.
Cleve a chance to really dig his heels in and show his MAD SKILLS. The
pyrotechnical vibes on this number could not even eclipse Cleve's
prowess. Hooboy...I hated to do it, but this called for another drink.
Did I hear them say the next tune was called Esperanto, or just
completely IN esperanto? A cute little ditty in the percolator style.
Bartender? Rusty Nail, please. I get back to a room in a roiling boil
over Br. Cleve picking out a funky baroque-y haprpsichord thing with the
Millionaire laying ousome serious fuzz guitar. Weird combo, but MAN did
it WORK! The next one was another tune that I do not the name of, but
do I KNOW it... Fortunate listers will recognize this number as the
closing theme for Radio FANTASTICA. They were obviously working up to
something big, because next was Miniskirt, and who better to tackle the
understatement AND overstatement of Esquivel's trademark sound than
you-know-who on the ivories. Though not mentioned yet, the rest of the
band was dutifully shovelling the soul-coal on our heads. I've never
seen a crowd sing along to ethereal "ba-ba-ba" vocals before. ENCORE!
ENCORE!
Their hiatus was brief, and "Millionaires Holiday" followed.
How these cats can TEAR IT UP and not seem to be breaking a sweat is
beyond me, but that's just what they were doing.
The final song was prefaced with some kind words for Otto Stroheim,
which was greeted by waves of recognition and appreciation from the
crowd. The band saluted him for his
efforts on their behalf and told a bit of his travels to the Kahiki
in Ohio (where he proposed to the lovely Baby Doe.) The Closing tune, a
lush, Dennyesque (genuine Denny?) balm for the soul that
sugarcoated the sad news that the end was in sight.
On my way out I stopped by the restroom and lo and BEHOLD! An
attendant! I LOVE THIS! Nice guy too... We chatted briefly.
Unfortunately I did not have the presence of mind to check if he had
one of those big jars of medicated combs. I looked for Otto, but there
were SEVERAL bald guys with tiki shirts.... I did however bump into
lister Jeff Phillips, who you may recall said in a recent post, (and
this a quote) "You'll find me doing it with the "Al Malaikah" fez on."
So he was kinda hard to miss. Again my mind failed me as I forgot to
ask him, "Doing WHAT?"
I now know what overcame Otto in darkness of the Kahiki that night.
Hell, I'm married, and I damn near made a few proposals, so overtaken
was I with the mood, atmosphere and the beautiful people. Or maybe I
just need to get out more.

I am trying to make a connection with some instrumental wordless disco, Sound
Gallery-like recordings, now sounds, and exotica. This search has yielded
many interesting items. One artist that alludes me is Silvetti (referred to in
Peter Thomas' Futurmuzik on Scamp). I can only find the song "Spring Rain" by
him/them and only on a Salsoul mix CD that does not isolate the track...Anyone
know any LP's by Silvetti? Any for sale? Where I might find anything? Thanks
in advance, Jimmy Botticelli

OK, what's the deal with this guy? One record that I know of called
CONFESSIONS OF LOVE on CBS in their late sixties Andy Williams/John
Davidson/Robert Goulet/Eddie Albert phase. John Simon production in a
studio folk-rock mode. And EXTREMELY campy folk-cabaret songs obsessed
with young women having sex with lower class men. O yes, no discernable
singing voice, of course (I prefer Eddie Albert).
I'm guessing Greenwich Village is somehow involved.
Et tu, Brute Force?

Fantastica # 60
title: You only live twice - identification: Kill Bond!
1. LEITMOTIV: John Barry, Sean Connery & Co.: "Music, dialogue & sounds"
o home-recording "You Only Live Twice"
o Film recorded from TV | not rated
2. Dickie Goodman: "The flying saucer - part 1"
o album "Greatest Hits"
o LP, Rhino RNLP 811, USA, 1983 | ++++
o info: The first "break-in record" master. Exists on a CD called
"Greatest Fables", see details in my "eXotica Releases Overview".
3. The Ventures: "Reflections"
o album "Super psychedelics"
o LP, Liberty LST-8052, USA, 196? | +++
o info: The more I listen to this LP, the more I like it. It's not
really Super psychedelic, but there's 1 sitar track, lots of great
electric guitar work-outs. Mostly originals, but also a couple of
covers (Strawberry Fields; Happy Together). Not as far-out as
their "The Ventures In Space" album though.
4. Dick Hyman & Mary Mayo: "Bye bye blues"
o album "Moon gas"
o LP, MGM E/SE 4110, USA, 196? | +++++
o info: Sampled by Tipsy. There are some truely strange and outer
space organ sounds happening here! A classic.
5. Julie London: "Fly me to the moon"
o compil. "Ultra-Lounge Volume 14: Bossa Novaville"
o CD, Capitol CDP 53410, USA, 1997 | ++++
o info: Various Capitol artists pour a tasty bossa nova souce over
their music, a sauce prepared by composer Jobim in about half of
the tracks. These are a few of my favorite tracks: "Misirlou"
(Laurindo Almeida), "Quiet village bossa nova" (by Denny himself),
"The look of love" in a bossa version by Billy May, a whistled
"Girl from Ipanema", and "Fly me to the moon" by Julie.
6. Rudy Rosa with his custom X66 Hammond: "You only live twice"
o album "Computerized Synthesized Organized"
o LP, R & R stereo 4112J9, USA | +++
o info: weird Hammond plus Arp plus assorted electronic apparatus.
7. Cal Tjader: "Somewhere in the night"
o album "Soul Sauce"
o CD, PGD/Verve 31451 21668 2, USA, 1994 | ++++
o info: A mix of soul, jazz and soft vibes. The CD contains 4 bonus
tracks.
8. Les Baxter (with 101 Strings): "Tropicando"
o album "Que Mango"
o CD, Scamp 1727 9718 2, USA, 1996 | ++++
o info: Lush and sophisticated, but never slimey. Recorded in London
in 1970. The liners say: "...a masterful blend of European
sophistication, African sensuality, South American festivity and
neo-anglo contemporary."
9. Korla Pandit: "Perfidia"
o album "Exotica 2000"
o CD, Sympathy For The Record Industry 9680 387 2, USA, 1996 | +++
o info: New recordings by Korla, that I found as good as any of his
earlier works I've heard yet.
10. Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: "Upa, Neguinho"
o album "Easy loungin'. Twenty Easy Listening Classics"
o CD, Polydor 540 468, Germany, 1995 | ++++
o info: Excellent, highly recommended introduction to Mendes's
soulful Brazil sound, with 20 tracks from 1966 to 1970.
11. Syd Dale: "Portobello Market"
o compil. "Ready steady boogaloo!" (Amphonic grooves for Carnaby
chicks and cool steppers)
o CD, Summot SUMCD 4185, UK, 1998 | +++++
o info: This is maybe how volume 3 of "The Sound Gallery" might have
sounded like! Eighteen excellent late sixties/early seventies
production music from the Amphonic music library, founded by Syd
Dale, who worked for KPM during the sixties. Contrary to the
title, and though a bit funky at times and with a bit of Latin
percusion, there's no real boogaloo here, but - quote -
"hard-beating acid-pop and funky Hammond grooves". Some tracks
have a touch of Latin, jazz and funk; most are of that typical
British combination of sophisticated groovy Hammond + big band
horns + strings here and there, with happy melodies and lush
arrangements. At only GBP 5-, this must be the best deal of the
year!
12. Bert Kaempfert & His Orchestra: "Falling free"
o album "Easy loungin'. Twenty Easy Listening Classics"
o CD, Polydor 529 492-2, Germany, 1995 | ++++
o info: Yet another one in this series of five that is highly
recommended, really, believe me. No idea where these cuts come
from, but they're really groovy and swinging and beautiful, and
NOT cheesy. There's even a version of "Caravan" on it...
13. Jack Webb: "Try a little tenderness"
o compil. "Golden throats - The great celebrity sing off"
o LP, Rhino R1 70187, USA, 1988 | +++++
o info: The title of this (3 volume) series is used as a genre
description these days - a great compliment for Rhino Records.
Exists on CD, see details in my "eXotica Releases Overview".
14. Astrud Gilberto: "Who can I turn to? (When nobody needs me)"
o album "The silver collection. The Astrud Gilberto album"
o CD, Verve 823-451-2, USA, 199? | +++++
o info: Essential. It's a combination of tracks from 2 or more LP
albums from 1965 and '66, but there no liners at all.
15. Button Down Brass: "Truckin'"
o album "Why can't we all get together"
o LP, Pye (quad) QUAD1004 | ++
o info: One dynamite funk track (Truckin'), good versions of "Shaft"
and "Superstar", and that's about it; the rest is forgettable
16. The Boys: "Polaris"
o compil. "Instrumental Diamonds 1: Jumpin'"
o CD, Sequel NEXCD 149, UK, 1990 | +++
o info: There are about 6 really killer early 60's Joe Meek style
instro's here, the rest is between good and not bad.
17. Mel Torme with the Mel-Tones (interrupted by boisterous Bond): "TNT
blues MIX"
o album "Back in town"
o CD, Verve (Polygram) 511522, USA, 1991 | +++
o info: Beautiful, smooth vocal/vocalese lite jazz, recorded 1959.
18. Sir Julian/Elliott Fisher: "You only live twice/Thunderball"
o compil. "Ultra-Lounge Volume 16: Mondo Hollywood"
o CD, Capitol CDP 52560, USA, 1997 | ++++
o info: not exactly one of the best volumes, but it has some great
moments
19. Perez Prado: "Bond Theme"
o album "Lights! Action! Prado!"
o LP, United Artists UAL mono 3394, USA | +++++
o info: A hard day's night! James Bond theme! Goldfinger! Topkapi!
Killer LP!
album ratings:
+++++outstanding, ++++very good, +++good, ++not bad, +so-so, -yuk

Subject: (exotica) Free Design
I just found the Free Design compilation "Kites are Fun, The Best of Free
Design" on Varese Sarabande and I'm intrigued I must admit. I've read
about at least two other "best of" compilations including one very recently
reviewed called "Bubbles" on Siesta. I don't want to set out to look for
them - assuming I can find them if I did - only to find out that
essentially the same tracks are on each of the compilations. So what
better place to turn than to my Free Design-obsessed pals on this list?
I read that four of the actual records were reissued also. Do any of those
individual releases feature more tracks NOT on the best-of compilations?
There's a pretty good article about them in this compilation - even though
it required intense amount of light in order to convince me that I didn't
need glasses - but have there been many articles about them?
(Has there been one in Cool and Strange?)
Apparently Chris Dedrick lives near me and works in the same business. I
don't know why that makes me think I should look him up but for some reason
that idea has crept into my head.
Like a lot of music I've been hearing recently the music here is very very
familiar and yet there's something unique about it too. (I feel like a
broken record, having said that about Lee Hazelwood recently.)
Here's one question I would ask him if I met him? I'd never heard of them
before I started hearing about their reissues here on the list. So I kind
of wonder whether in the end, they still think it was a good idea to go
with the Project 3 label?
And am I the only one who thinks of The Association when they hear this?
Particularly the first Association album with Along Comes Mary which was in
the first batch of records I ever bought, ordered from the Columbia Record
Club.
