Don't forget Erasure's "Abba-esque" EP. I saw a video once for one of =
the songs. It was pretty much a recreation of the original (with, as I =
recall, Andy Bell & Vince Clarke playing all four parts). Very campy & =
fun.

I also seem to recall seeing a CD called "Abbacadabra" -- a tribute band =
perhaps? And what about Bjorn Again, did they ever release anything?

Interesting, because around Halloween, LA's long-established pirate station
KBLT (I believe the frequency was 104.3) was *also* busted by the FCC and
shut down. Coincidence?

I think not!  The MAN is always clamping down, brother.  A good pirate was
shut down in  Tampa, 87X, where Santo and Cremora hosted STIMULOUS
PROGRESSION...a very list-esque show.  In fact, it did happen about a month
ago...The truth is out there.

All this tawk about the Free Design reminds me of another (fake) group, The
Carrie Nations.  C'mon, if that ain't the ...man, what's a synonym for
"bomb?"

the ComEd Show at Bimbo's in SF. I am overwhelmed.

I can't seem to turn up any information on "Mr. Pushkin"
mentioned in the Combustible Edison instro tune "Mr. Pushkin
Comes to Shove."

He was described by the Millionaire as a cartoon character
conceived by USSR propagandists in the 60's to convince
Americans that they had a sense of humor, or something like
that.... What's the deal? I can't find any reference to him.

Also, anybody know anything about the German scifi show
they made reference to?

Thanks in advance.... If you'se cats don't know, it
probably can't be important.

Well, okay, it's not so much a matter of "versus" as their desire to skim
off revenue and control the technology. It's amusing how the age-old
practice of giving radio stations records (among other things) for free in
hope of getting airplay is now characterized as a mistake, not a precedent.
The scary thing is that depending on how everything plays out -- IF digital
delivery should eventually replace physical media AND the big guys get to
write the rules -- we could wind up having to pay for every individual
playback. Hang onto your analog recording hardware, gang.

Dove-tailing the Free Design thread and the "photos of Enoch" thread: the
Varese Sarabande F.D. comp has a photo of Mr. L in the booklet.

And all of this talk of easy pop reminds me of the late 80s (or early 90s)
Philly band, Autumn Carousel. Unfortunately I don't think they ever put
anything out. I saw them once, and they certainly would have fit into this
line. Three or four part harmonies and a fearlessly wimpy attitude. On a
number of tunes, the drummer was actually out front with just a tambourine.
They had a suitable look too -- everyone in turtlenecks and patterned
trousers, I *think* -- the memories are a bit distant. But it was a
terrific set.

Also, it would be very interesting to hear the demo recordings by the
Carpenters' pre-Carpenters band, Spectrum. There was a brief snip of a song
or two in one of those recent Carpenters documentaries and it was darned
intriguing. More of a jazz influence (in the harmonies and the rhythms)
than in the pure pop Carpenters. Reminded me of a Brasil 66 without the
Latin element. But heck, it was probably only 10 seconds or so of music, so
who can say.

This is ALREADY happening. DIVX, the "pay per play' version of DVD.
I can't believe consumer reporters are not all over this...Waitaminnit,
I CAN believe it, considering ALL major media outlets are controlled
by the entertainment industry.

It's really scary stuff, because when you pay per play, who is keeping
track of what you watch? There is also reason to believe that real obscure
material would be harder to realease in this type of marketing environment.

I PRAY for the market to resist this cocamamie scheme.

Possibly the most self-absorbed music I have ever heard, save for the recent
efforts of Sting.
I bought the record for a friend and had to copy it to CD. Though I LOVE
electronic sounds, especially
soopeerr sppaacceeyy type of synth, this was a bit to out there for me.

Any fans? I can easily believe there are some who think it's brilliant. I
won't disagree.

My TV Cartoon Almanac lists this as running for only one season on ABC  (Sept
'62 - Aug '63 color, half hour, 22 episodes, not renewed). It's described as a
"Kennedy, cold war era curio" that would no doubt today be seen as politically
incorrect ironically despite it's somewhat Russian apologist stance. The book
lists Rolf Steedmann, an ex-Hanna-Barbera artist was the main illustrator. And
that's it, not much.

I would be curious if any one on the list may have a video or possibly even a
coloring book of Mr. Pushkin for trade as I'm a big collector of Cold War era
ephemera and  Mr. Pushkin stuff at memorabillia conventions/flea markets is
somewhat of a rarity due to the short run and the very nature of the show.

Subject: (exotica) Combustible Edison tickets

I just wanted to share my happiness with the list.  I got my tickets last
night for the upcoming Combustible Edison show in Chapel Hill at the Cat's
Cradle on Nov. 24th.  I am very excited.  I have seen them perform twice
before and both shows were excellent.  I can heartily recommend them to anyone
on the list.  I am certain that anyone on this list would enjoy their live
shows.

Question:  I do not have their newest CD yet.  (Am I slack, or what?)  Any
opinions.  Would others who have it rate it as highly as the first CD and the
Four Rooms soundtrack?

I had the great pleasure of talking with Phil Kraus, the great
percussionist who played on most of the Command, Time, Project 3, and
Living Jazz/Marimbas/Percussion albums, earlier this week.  Phil is living
in Houston now and still performs with a small group at a local country
club several times a month.

Phil worked with most of the New York City-based musicians enjoyed by this
list.  He was one of the few expert all-around percussionists in the City,
and so he was able to work as much as 7 days a week, doing 3-2 recording
sessions a day, for over 20 years.  He recalls once doing a knock-off album
of rock-n-roll tunes for RCA Camden under Sid Bass' direction in under 90
minutes.  "Compare that to these rock groups who mess around in a studio
for six months these days," he commented.  He recorded for anybody and
everybody--Muzak, Madison Ave. commercials, radio, television, singer,
instrumentalists, soundtracks.  He only left NYC twice professionally after
the mid-1930s--once with Paul Whiteman and once for a few days with Frank
Sinatra.

He remembered doing one of the very earliest all-percussion albums with
Jimmy Carroll, Mitch Miller's arranger, sitting around some mikes in
Carroll's instrument rental shop.  The resulting album, "Speed the Parting
Guest," came out on Carroll's own label and quickly disappeared from sight.
 Phil also recorded several albums on his own on the Grand Crest label.  He
mentioned that he still gets residuals on the two tunes he composed
himself--"Jan" and "Dizzy Fingers"--from Belgium (thanks to list member
Johan Da Vis!).

He had no idea his stuff was popular again, although he said one of his
grandkids showed him a Martin Denny CD recently.

I've updated my page on Phil

recollections.  If you happen to be in Houston, checking the music
listings--you may have the great luck to catch him in action.

i came across a shitload of his records at a local store - all in perfect
condition and priced to move.  Many had the NOW sound look with groovy chicks
on covers and titles like "Hammond A Go-Go", "Trumpets A Go Go", "Voodoo
Party" and numerous others with *dance* in the title.

I would have popped the five bucks for one of the *cool* looking ones, but i
needed to save my money for a pizza across the street at Stefano's and had
already committed myself to Rod McKuen's "San Francisco Hippie Trip" and
Mancini's "Symphonic Soul".

So what's up with the music, anyone?  German band leader arranging pop hits in
a big band style is what I gather...

Brad,

Thanks for the info!  I have noticed that pretty much anything he
is involved with is great stuff!

I have always wanted to know...his album with Bob Rosengarden on
RCA: "Percussion--Playful and Pretty"...it sounds like it was one
of those RCA did for the Stereo Action but shelved it when the
series died.  Just my theory.  It doesn't list a recording date,
but it was released in 1965...which seems a little late for this
kind of thing.

Did he say much about Bob Rosengarden?  He has paired up with him
several times.

One of my first exotica favorites was by James Last. I have it on a Polydor

"Happy Brazilia" features this great rhythm established by drums
and a police whistle.

That is the only James Last I have ever heard, but I still think it's neat.
He has got to have some other cool stuff.

Yes, he does. A lot of people probably avoid his records, but a lot of
his records have cool/cheesy covers and the music.... well, his
arrangements tend to use the same tricks over and over again. Still I
think some of his records from the late 60's/early 70's are fun to
listen to. Every once in a while a suprising original composition pops
up between all the coverversions. So, anyone who likes "instrumental
ousic by large orchestras" should own a couple of his records. Don't pay
more than 50 cents though....

Down. Last records often "look" great, but very rarily have anything rede=
eming. However, there is an amazing batucuda track on "Beach Party". I =
mean, it is full-on.  Recently played during a techno-house night, and =
prompted Detroit techno legend Derrick May to run over to my friend and =
go "MAN! What is this?!" And my pal promptly showed him the cover proudly=
 and said "James Last". So if you hear Derrick May dropping some Last in =
his set, you know it was the Scottish groovecore underground that turned =
him on....

Mostly down. A few records, like e.g. "Voodoo Party" are very good.
Early stuff like "Sax a Go-Go" or "Hammond a Go-Go" are ok too, by
sixties stereo demo record standards. Considering his enormous output
(he made hundreds of records), he scores rather badly - most stuff is
beyond hope. However, even on his (overall particularily poor) medley
albums, I have found a few good tracks (e.g. on "Non stop dancing 1973"
and some of the "Beach Party" series) - at a going rate of one or two DM
on German flea markets (next to K-Tel/Arcade samplers, they probably are
the most abundant records hereabouts, and particularily unpopular), I
can afford to take a chance on them, even if at least 95% are daubs.

"Voodoo Party" is a much sought-after record by sheep-like DJ's and the
sheep that follow them here.  As a result, it's the one Last record you
almost never see here.  The track "Giant Man" in particular, was a popular
DJ track here.

I have the record and I don't think I could say that it's very good.  I
COULD say that it's excellent compared to every other James Last record
that I've heard.  After I heard this record, it gave me a bit of hope and I
started letting myself buy James Last records, in hopes they would be as
non-mediocre as Voodoo Party.  But alas they were very hopelessly mediocre.

But that's good.  It's good that there's at least one kind of record that
you see all the time that you can pass up without much fear of missing
something.  Ever since I bought a Roberto Delgado record with a few pretty
hot cuts, I had to suddenly look seriously at those records.  (Please don't
tell me there's a hot cut on a Nana Mouskouri record somewhere!)

James Last and Roberto Delgado were kind of similar and on the same label,
weren't they?

The best stuff on Voodoo Party is basically like Santana.  If you want a
Santana clone, I'd recommend El Chicano.

By the way, speaking of sheep, I ran into a hip hop-sampling-remix-type DJ
pal the other night and I asked whether he and his "type" have started to
look for samples in the lounge and easy listening world yet.  And he said
that it was beginning but that mostly kids were looking for records that
had already been sampled rather than making their own discoveries.  I found
that disappointing.  They're all looking for this one particular Boots
Randolph record so they can say they have the record that De La Soul sampled.

I'm still waiting to hear a hip hop track with an Art Van Damme sample.

I'm not an expert and I don't look after them in record shops, but just
according to what I hear in radio and what friends recorded for me on
tapes there are a lot of hip hop products with heavy exotica influences
and samples. I'd really like to know more about it, I suspect that it's
mostly white artists who do that. Maybe it's more of a European thing.
Hip Hop is very big here now. The most famous that I know by name is of
course MC Solaar from Paris, but I'm shure there are many more. Toobad
my hip hop knowledge all comes from tapes without credit lists.
