Hello all
The original soundtrack to "Carnival of Souls" has just been reissued on CD:)
Not yet in, soon though.

$17.00 + Shipping
O.S.T.: Carnival Of Souls CD "In 1962 an industrial filmmaker named Herk
Harvey set out to make a feature length horror movie. With the help of
writer John Clifford he made Carnival of Souls -- the story of a girl who
survives a car crash only to find herself haunted by ghouls. The movie
played a meager run at drive-ins and later wound up as a staple on late
night TV. In the late 80s it was re-released as an art house film and won a
surprising amount of acclaim -- even People magazine ran a feature on it.
George Romero has cited the film as the primary influence on Night Of The
Living Dead and its dark eeriness is still unsettling by today's standards.
One feature that enhances the film's creepiness to great effect is the pipe
organ score of Gene Moore which is simultaneously atmospheric and chilling
- -- imagine Korla Pandit's never recorded Halloween album and you get the
picture.
This is the first time ever the soundtrack to this cult classic complete
with stand out bits of dialog from the film and music that was recorded for
the film which hit the cutting room floor, has ever seen the light of day
or the dark of night. This is music that guarantees nightmares.

An interesting sidenote to the jazz or not discussion was that a short
snippet on Jobim (I believe it was on Bravo a year or two ago), showed
him playing the Girl From Ipanema live in Brazil and then it changed
directly into Take the A Train by Duke Ellington. Jobim was
interviewed and said he took Take the A Train and molded directly
into the Girl from Ip. It was truly an eye opener.
I'm not very good at clasifying genres of music. Sometimes an adverb
or adjective such as the dry sound of the "desert" describe music the
best for me.

Lots of Jazz standards are based on the same "changes." I guess it's a
function of having just so many chords to use, and a lot of songs get
written from inspiration that come about during improvisation.
Play "I got rhythm" and sing the theme to "The Flintsones." They fit
PERFECTLY and are interchangeable. I'm sure some musicians out there
will know of more examples of this.
Neato, huh?

Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music, 1870-1885
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/smhtml/smhome.html
American Sheet Music, 1870-1885 is an addition to the American Memory
Collection of digitized historical materials at the Library of Congress. In
1870, the US Congress passed copyright legislation that required the deposit
of one copy of any copyrighted work at the Library of Congress. As a result,
thousands of pieces of music were sent to the Library of Congress, and in
1896, the Library established its Music Collection with
400,000 items. The online collection currently includes 22,000 musical
compositions that were registered for copyright between 1870 and 1879. Both
catalog records and digital images of the sheet music are available,
allowing users to search or browse by author, title, or subject, and view
the complete musical notation. Descriptions of any illustrations on the
sheet music are not included in the catalog records, so pictures can only be
located by browsing. The Library plans to add an additional 23,000 titles to
the online sheet music collection in the fall of 1999.

Yes, it is indeed young Master Williams. And don't forget Mrs. Joyboy -- an
escapee from a John Waters feature before John Waters started making
features! Cutting and pasting myself, here's more of the "once in a
lifetime" cast:
The Loved One (1965) Based on a novel by Evelyn Waugh, adapted by Terry
Southern and Christopher Isherwood, and directed by Tony Richardson (Tom
Jones), this is one of those movies you must see. Robert Morse plays a
British poet/plagiarist, who comes to Hollywood to visit his art director
uncle, John Gielgud. Unfortunately, Uncle hangs himself after being fired
by the movie studio. Morse is left with the task of handling the funeral
arrangements at Whispering Glades cemetery (based on Forest Lawn). Many
things branch off from there. Let me just list some of the amazing cast:
Jonathan Winters (in two roles), Robert Morley, Lionel Stander, James
Coburn, Liberace, Anjanette Comer, Rod Steiger (as Mr. Joyboy), Tab Hunter,
Milton Berle, Dana Andrews, Margaret Leighton, little Paul Williams, Alan
Napier, Elizabeth Ann Roberts, Roddy McDowall and the proverbial many more.
Originally advertised as the movie with something to offend everyone.
Terrific b&w cinematography by Haskell Wexler delineates highly unique
situations. If you've never seen it, you don't know what you're missing.

In that same issue of Zone 5300 a raving review of Aavikko's "Derek" CD
"I can make it short about "Derek" by Finnish band Aavikko : this is for me
absolutely the most festive release of the year! Two organs and a stripped
drumset is all the men need to brew up a half hour long mix of ska, house,
disco, vaudeville and humppa. You have to be serious stuffed if you don't
get your feet from the floor with this. Armed with a enormous dose of humor
every instrumental is a direct hit. The ska-song. Kipstadt, deserves to be a
big hit, and the tragicomic waltz, Die Wiesen von Krakow, wouldn't be out of
place in one of the movies from fellow countryman Aki Kaurismaki.
Mouthwatering stuff!"
Wholeheartedly recommend! If anyone wants to trade a tape of this drop me a
line.

I just can't throw them out. And they are kind of useful as separators on

Subject: (exotica) Supertroopers
Just released in Holland is "Only in it for the Money" by the Supertroopers,
the result of a longtime hobby-project by Dutch rockband Hello Venray. As
the Abba's they've been doing infrequent succesfull gigs for a number of
years as a funband playing only covers by the Swedish legends when finally a
record company asked them to record an album. As the original name of the
Abba's might rouse the wrath of Scandinavian lawyers they decided to choose
this name.
Tracklist: Mamma Mia/ Gimme, gimme, gimme/Money. money, money/ S.O.S./ Name
of the Game/ Waterloo/Winner Takes it All/ Honey, honey/ Lay All your Love/
Dancing Queen/ I Do/ Chiquitita/ I Have a Dream
Van Records,1998
Nothing overly spectacular here, all covers are done in guitarstyle. Dancing
Queen is c&w upbeat, I Do has been slowed down. Chiquitita gets the fuzz
grunge workout while Gimme, gimme, gimme gets a twist as it is sung by a
man. No The Day Before You Came, my favorite Abba-song, alas. Anyway this
brings my my collection of Abbacoveralbums at four: Abbasalutely (a comp. by
artists on the New Zealand Flying Nun label), Selma & Sabina sing the hits
of Abba in Hindi and The Royal Philharmonic play Abba being the other ones.
Any more?
Arjan

Subject: (exotica) peter Wyngarde
I finally got my friend Steve to play me the Peter Wyngarde LP. Its pretty
good. Needless to say that as he was an actor its all spoken word stuff,
but its way out on a limb beyond, say, William Shatner. The music varies
from a sort of lush orchestral sound like Scott Walker, to the kind of 60's
English psychedelic pop that you'd find on the Bam Caruso compilations.
Its the vocal content that makes the LP though, there is some poetry, some
general chat (Oh yes, come in, have a chair) and some quite bizarre stuff
halfway between. Some of it is quite beyond the pale. The reason Steve
wouldn't play it in the first place was the track Rape. I guess attitudes
have changed considerably, but this is really jaw dropping stuff, managing
to be offensive on several levels, and at the same time so cheesy its
beyond comprehension. The only response we could come up with was to sit
there shaking our heads, mouths open, saying What were they thinking?
So after all that, I reckon its a pretty good LP.

You're thinking about Trader Vics in the Hilton at Hyde Park Corner. It =

Don Tiki is one of the best examples of Exotica in the pure sense of
the word. Don Tiki has been mentioned on the list. Its a rather
difficult cd to buy. I know that Tower Records in Hawaii sold it and
you can get a Tower store near you to order it from them. Vic's
Lounge also has a way to contact Don Tiki directly. The Don Tiki
people are wonderful to deal with & I especially recieved first class
treatment from a person called "Little Laff"

I ordered my copy through Amazon - $10 or so, got in 3 days after
placing the order. Great buy: Augie Colon's son on jungle shrieks.
Cool cover art, too.
Julie London's cover of An Occasional Man still unsurpassed, in my
opinion, though.

This very sad news from the droneon list:
Some sad news just coming in.
Apparently Simeon and Danny of the Silver Apples have had a serious car
smash, involving at least 5 rolls of the hired van they were in. Danny
fortunately walked away from it relatively unscathed, but Simeon suffered a
broken neck. At the moment he's paralysed, and will obviously never play
(or paint, or cook - his other two passions) again, but "might" be able to
walk eventually according to the doctors in New York. Peg hopes to get him
home to Baltimore as soon as possible.
It'd be nice to think "we" (as in his fans) might be able to organise some
kind of benefit for him, or at least some way of showing we care, in due
course - but right now I'm too stunned to think straight to be honest.
Anyone wanting to send messages of support should write care of Peg Udall,
since she'll be at home (when she can get away from the hospital) at:
Whirlybird Records, 28 Decatur Ave., Annapolis MD 21403 USA
Terrible huh?
