Zeena Parkins, another musician from the downtown NY scene, plays harp AND
accordion. She's played on various John Zorn projects, as well as other stuff
(Skeleton Crew), most of which I'm probably not aware of.

Does anyone else remember when Alice Coltrane had a *television show*? I
remember I used to catch it in late hours on weird UHF channels...it was
more about meditation and spirituality than music, really. Really dreamy
and BIZARRE. Exotic, even? At the time, I don't think I even knew who John
Coltrane was.
Anyone know more about that program?

A lady by the name of Daphne Hellman has a great jazz harp LP on Harmony
and though Harmony was primarily a reissue label for Columbia, this was not
a reissue
and did originally come from Harmony.
Lost yet ? Features Mundell Lowe on Guitar also.
I *think* it's called Holiday for Harp and it is the shit
All of Harpo Marx's LP's are excellent, all 2 of them:)
Betty Glaaman also is a great jazz, jazz pop, pop harpist and has a number
of great LP's on Bethlehem and Emarcy.
The 1 on Bethlehem has 2 different titles and features a septet, 7 piece
outfit for those of you who can't figure out what a septet is w/ Barry
Galbraith-Guitar and killer accordion by a name that escapes me at this
moment, Bongos too.
1 title of that LP is POINCIANA and the other is.....?
Same cover, same label, different title

Ohhhhh. :( I was gonna mention this and Jack beat me to it!
Here's another good harp album: Just A Minute: Harp Moods and Interludes
(it's one of those radio station records with short cuts to play inbetween
shows, etc.) Check out these titles: Danger, Mystery, Outer Space, Swirls,
Sophistication in E Flat. I also have a promo for all those reverb sound
effects that were so big in the 70s that has a weird echoey harp solo. Spooky!
One more for the accordion files: "I Love Accordians" on Golden Crest, by
the Bell Accordion Symphony--they're a bunch of goofy kids in prom dresses
and suits! O_o God love 'em....at least they have the good taste to do a
cover of "Laura."
BTW, the orchestra on Contino's "Squeeze Me" is conducted by Pete Rugolo, so
you know it's cool. ^_-
Then there's the cordovox sounds of "Just Plain" Pat Montaine or Larry
LaSagna.
Thanks for the space, Jessica ^_^

I just can't agree, as the Strip Records discs have not left my cd player
since I bought them. Yes, the tunes are raw, but also lively &
immediate...it is not polite music! The tracks on Las Vegas Grind & Jungle
Exotica sound like they were recorded in one take with no time for that

Other cool harp rekkids include--
"Have Harp, Can't Travel" (Liberty LST-3118), a classic by the Stanley-Johnson Orchestra
featuring not one, but two harps - one played by Dorothy Remsen, who also appears on
Drasnin's "Voodoo". Great cover has Billy Barty in top hat and tails trying to wrestle
a harp onto an L.A. city bus!
"Harp, Skip and Jump" (RCA Camden CAS 452) by Gene Bianco with Mundell Lowe, guitar; Joe
Venuto, percussion; Don Lamond, drums; Wendell Marshall, bass. Other Bianco albums are
pretty syrupy, but this one kicks. Love the title track!
"There Goes My Harp" (Decca DL 8825), ethereal harp by Mimi Allen. Pop songs done in
"the Mimi manner".
"Harp with a Beat" (HiFi R606), Verlye Mills with the Billy May Orchestra. Swingin'
stuff, especially "Latin Lady" and "Carlsbad Caper". She did at least a couple of other
rekkids, too.
Love that harp!

Well, I do look for Mantovani hoping to find something that would make me
want to buy one of his records. However, by the overwhelming evidence in
the used bins, I can tell you that few people are into Mantovani. The
stacks are just full of them! Someone must have liked the records once,
but I doubt my mother even would listen today. She used to own a Mantovani
record, but when she started downsizing her collection it was the first one
to go. At one thrift store, a woman did tell me she was looking for a
Mantovani record, but only for its camp value. She said no one was better
at that cheesy swelling strings sound than Mantovani.
If someone really gets into that sound, more power to them.
I think Mitch Miller is equally despised, from the comments I've heard by
people standing near the "Sing along..." albums. However, Mr. Miller
didn't make quite as many records as Mr. Mantovani. I have a feeling Mr.
Mantovani must have lived in the recording studio.
You know, if he had recorded an album with an exotica "standard", I would
buy it...but I have yet to see a "Third Man Theme" or "Caravan" on any of
his records.
Hey, if you know of a *GOOD* Mantovani record or even a mediocre record
with *ONE* good cut, let me know. There would be nothing more interesting
than to have Mr. Smooth back announce Mr. M! There has to be one: I just
found a Percy Faith Album which may make it onto the show.
Perhaps there's an album called "Mantovani Punk?"

Subject: (exotica) Accordiona!
I have several responses to the recent thread on accordion music.
First, I would like to heartily recommend Those Darn Accordions to anyone.
I saw them last year at the Cotati Acordion Festival and I must say that they
rocked in a major way. They play a mix of polka, rock and you-name-it
material. They're all very talented and play with unbridled enthusiasm. See
'em live if you can, or pick up one of their cds. Squeeze This! is a personal
favorite. I was personally blown away by their amazing version of Jimi
Hendrix' "Fire" sung by eighty-two year old Clyde.
The headliner at that show was, by the way, Dick Contino. We didn't stay
to see him, but I did stop by the booth where he was shilling his wares to say
hello. He's a very serious fella.
I'd also like to recommend a listen to any of the great Brazillian
accordionists, but most importantly Luis Gonzaga. He virtually invented the
whole Forro style of music single-handedly, and his recorded work is infused
with a remarkable spirit and irresistable style. Just try to listen to his
stuff and not have a good time, go ahead!
Another good choice is the Conjunto! series on Rounder. This great series
of Texas-Mexican border music accordion combos was put together by Carl Finch
of Brave Combo, no stranger to exotica himself.
I would also like to take exception to the mauling of Myron Floren. I
first bought one of his records a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised.
I liked the choice of material (Dizzy Fingers, Sabre Dance, April in Portugal,
The Breeze and I) and his arrangemments and playing were great. Try his
version of Anna on for size - it's a swinging fit. I have a pile of his
records now, and none are without some merit.
One last recommendation is Charles Magnante. His Moods for Moderns lp
often stays on the turntable here for repeated playings. Great Moritat!

I have no idea what you mean by good. I bought one called "The Mantovani
Scene" because it had a few covers with, I thought, potential. "Delilah",
"Both sides now".. And I thought his cover of "Honey" couldn't be any worse
than the original. All I can say is it's no better than I thought it might
be.
But Percy Faith? Come on. I'm sure there are people on this list who love
Percy. But if you're more shall we say "discerning", I can recommend his
"Black Magic Woman" album. Pretty good versions of the title cut and "Oye
como va", among others. I can't imagine those cuts being unprogrammable.

I have one on LP called "Huntington Ashram Monastery". Good title Alice.
It's quite different than the other ones I've heard. Don't ask me how.
It's a lot less mystical and swooshy. She picks the harp rather than
playing all those big chords. It's more of a minimal groove thing. Jack
help me out here. "It's the cat's pyjamas!"
Satchidananda and a few others are reissued in that lovely cardboard
Impulse series.
I guess Alice weren't no Yoko Ono after all.

Previously mentioned in a different context:
EXTRAITS DES BANDES ORIGINALES DES FILMS DE JAQUES TATI (Phillips /

ROME WITH LOVE, Jo Basile & orchestra, (AF, USA,1959)
and that brings me to a SONG that was a super-big hit in Europe at the
end of the 50s and was in fact my very first record ever and nobody
seems to know it in America:
MARINA, by Rocco Granata, which has an accordian-melody in the
middle-part, that nobody can forget, who ever heard it and actually made
the hit.
The music of France and Italy in the past seems to be build up on the
accordion-sound in general. Why is that? Because these countries have a
Caf=E9-Culture?

The bane of South African rekkid piles must be the Springbok series (I'd
venture there are about 50). They're budget compilations of cover versions
(aaargh!) that were EXTREMELY popular in the 60-70's. On a par is the
Stereophonic series - compilations with medleys of cover versions, always
with naked lady and hifi set with shag carpets etc that got progressively
more lurid per release. I forget which series, but for a while it featured
naked women playing different types of sport like cricket etc with
bat/arm/ball in strategic position.
Every pile has one and often they move in large groups!

Well, fellow list members created a nice discography for Dorothy Ashby at
http://www.chaoskitty.com/b_kitty/html/instrum.html
Of the albums listed there, I have most of them, and *none* are duds. The
bop jazz albums are fresh, with flute by famed jazz flutist Frank Wess, and
an easy understated tone. Her album on Atlantic "The Fantastic Jazz Harp of
Dorothy Ashby" is probably my favorite of her jazz albums. Her Argo and
Cadet releases get progressively funkier, with "Afro Harping" being for
most, the holy grail.
The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby (the album you mention) is one of the few I don't
have.
Also important to note: "The Best of Dorothy Ashby" is a reissue of "Hip Harp,"
and "Dorothy Ashby Plays For Beautiful People" is a reissue of "In a Minor
Groove." You can find both of those albums on one CD titled "In a Minor
Groove" on Prestige.

Here's the others I've found:
Big Western Themes Vol. 2
Big War Themes
Big James Bond Themes
Favourite TV Themes
Top TV Themes
Superhero Themes
[This one is really good -- Wonderwoman, Batman and Devil's Gallop]
Science Fiction Themes
Big Disco Film Themes
Disco Galactic Themes
[w. Disco versions of Blake's 7 theme, The Omega Man, Logan's Run,
etc. (!)]
Some of them are really common -- others are hard to find (I've only
ever seen the one copy of the "Disco Galactic" one). Anyone found any
others?

Yes, Manuel is Love. I believe he's also Mandingo, but I have yet to find
anyone that can confirm this.

Okay, I'll admit trashy mall chains like Camelot, NRM, Coconuts, etc. are
essentially worthless and overpriced (although sometimes Camelot has some
cool cutouts). For some unkown reason, one day in the mall I decided to
inventory the Camelot. Not a SINGLE Esquivel CD in the whole store, and
the Ultra Lounge comps and one of the Rhino comps were filed under "L"
(for "Lounge" in the rock section. (You've heard me rant before about the
inadequacy of the Ultra Lounge CDs)
Border's (generally a stand-alone store here and not in malls), while
still overpriced, seems to be one of the best chains about keeping all
this sorta stuff in stock though. Another non-mall national chain that
has a surprising amount of cool stuff is Best Buy.
Hopefully you're not in a no-man's land where the mall store is the only
retail outlet for miles -- there's a ton of small regional chains and
one-off stores around here that have better selection and cheaper prices.
Through these stores I "special order" 75% of the retail music I buy.
It's cheaper than mail order, plus it clues them into stuff they'll want
to stock. The ONLY reason for mail order, IMO, is imports or indie stuff
like the MAN IN SPACE WITH SOUNDS, that don't have decent distribution,
making it impossible for such stores to special order them for me.
I know SOME mall chains *charge you* for special orders (not just a
deposit, an additional FEE!), reinforcing they are from the pits of hell.
