  77. Dunno. But I do have an album of jew's harp music, and plenty of
  78. hideous bagpipes, accordion and banjo... I could drag out the
  79. hurdy-gurdy, alphorn, zarb and steam organ albums and go mixing. This,
  80. at least, would be an occasion where the whole couldn't be less than
  81. the sum of its parts (I pray).

  105. How about his version of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"? On "The Mantovani
  106. Scene", I think. As for Percy Faith, you've got to get hold of "The
  107. Beatles Album" -- the "elevator music" version of "Lucy In The Sky With
  108. Diamonds" is hilarious! Mr. Faith did do some genuinely good stuff --
  109. I've got a 1950s 10" of Latin music which is superb.

  196. bop jazz albums are fresh, with flute by famed jazz flutist Frank Wess, and
  197. an easy understated tone. Her album on Atlantic "The Fantastic Jazz Harp of
  198. Dorothy Ashby" is probably my favorite of her jazz albums. Her Argo and
  199. Cadet releases get progressively funkier, with "Afro Harping" being for 
  200. most, the holy grail.

  237. I _think_ I have a pretty good Mantovani record; something from the 
  238. later 60s with "Green Tambourine" on it, and assorted other slightly 
  239. psychedelic songs, late Beatles hits, etc.  It might have been Percy 
  240. Faith, though, and I doubt it's here at school or I'd confirm.

  242. Even my parents, who always listened to the "elevator music" radio 
  243. station when I was growing up (and look what it did to me) and had 
  244. plenty of garden-variety 101 Strings record (no psychedelic or sexy 
  245. ones, of course) were hesitant about Mantovani.

  348. of Caravan(!!!) that certainly rivals the 3 Suns mind bending version

  351. I had that S.H. LP about a month ago and then played said version of 
  352. Caravan(!!!) on my show AND THEN sold it to a customer who wanted it
  353. after hearing it through their pewter!

  416. early David Bowie.  I too would be interested to know more about Brel.  I
  417. know Polygram released various volumes of Brel's recordings - but which one
  418. is the best introduction?

  719. Speaking of Brel, there is a movie from 1975: "Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well
  720. And Living In Paris". It's a musical revue presenting a batch of his songs --
  721. no plot or dialog to interfere, just takes advantage of film to open things up
  722. a bit. Brel is one of the performers, along with Elly Stone, Mort Shuman and
  723. Joe Masiell. To be honest, I've never heard of any of them. Supposed to be
  724. available on video.

  810. Mantovani's father was a professor of music in Italy,  and settled in England
  811. as a result of getting stranded here during WW1 while touring with an Opera
  812. Company.  Mantovani was a professional classical violinist at 16, and went
  813. on to conduct theatre orchestras for Gaumont cinemas during the 30's.  In
  814. 1950 he signed for Decca, and a 1970's catalogue of his albums runs to
  815. 53 different titles.  I don't think he had any jazz roots to be close to.
  816. He also seemingly never recorded "Third Man" or "Caravan", and the only
  817. even remotely exotic track he ever did was "Yellow bird".
  818.  
  819. I'd be the first to admit that not much of his output is challengingly
  820. exciting.
  821. I wonder if the glut of his records on sale in the London area is due to the
  822. emergence of radio stations like Melody Radio, who play this sort of stuff
  823. on FM stereo all the time.  People are abandoning vinyl for easy listening
  824. radio, especially pensioners (senior citizens) who tend to retire to smaller
  825. houses during which transition a nearby thrift gets the vinyl.

  828. the sort of thing that they like"?  Applies 100% to Mantovani.

  846. Mr Nelson sings and plays the recorder, backed by Jimmy Rowles,      
  847. Leroy Vinnegar, and Stan Levey, so you'll know it swings, too.

  849. And back briefly to bagpipes: Rufus Harley's "King/Queens" has got
  850. his insane versions of "Eight Miles High," "Moon River," and "Love
  851. is Blue"--you haven't lived until you've heard a bagpipe bossa nova

  918. A few word of support for Mantovani and perhaps reasons why his LP's are 
  919. quite common in some regions.

  921. Purchased in 1959, the first LP that I owned was a Mantovani LP when I was a 
  922. young child.  It contained gorgeous renditions of 2 of my favorite songs, 
  923. "Greensleeves" and Rogers & Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening".  I 
  924. still thoroughly enjoy that LP. 
  925.  
  926. Mantovani's recordings were released on London Records here in Canada.  I 
  927. believe that those recordings were some of the first stereo recordings to 
  928. be released here.  They were popular for at least 2 reasons, other than 
  929. musical achievement.  They were considered to be of audiophile quality 
  930. for that era.  Adults used them to demonstrate the marvellous sound of 
  931. their new audio systems.
  932.  
  933. Secondly, during the 1950's and 1960's, hundreds of thousands of British 
  934. people immigrated to North America and especially Canada.  They would buy 
  935. Mantovani LP's because they were familiar with his work.  Mantovani was a
  936. small piece of home to these British immigrants.

  938. Mantovani's popularity was justifiable, even though most of his work has not 
  939. dated very well.

  1170. Hmmm, well I think you'd might be disappointed by "Badmutha's" as it is
  1171. mostly vocal tracks although there are a few choice instrumentals, in
  1172. particular Earth,Wind & Fire's "Sweet Sweetback's Theme" which is over 7
  1173. minutes of bliss.

  1192. Communist Gangster Computer God. But why bother typing that out every time?
  1193. This first release is presumable a reissue of some old spoken word LP from
  1194. decades past; legality of these issues could be considered dubious.
  1195. Criswell has Ed Wood connections and made way-out predictions on TV in the
  1196. 50s. You can hear him reading these predictions in a very sedate voice. The
  1197. air in front of your head might turn just slightly weird.
