One of the all time greatest cheesy albums in the world ever ever ever
is an Australian one: "Paradise Vol. 1" by the John Schlesinger (?sp)
orchestra. It's a promotional thingummy, advertising the delights of
Queensland, including "Surfer's Paradise" with it's very famous gold
bikini clad meter maids (a voice on the relevant song chips in with
"Oh! what a lady/How I wish she was somewhat shady"). Comes with a
large booklet of photos showing 70s Stralians in the full glory of the
times. The music is fantastic, largely energetic Sound Gallery-esque
cheese but with more chance of sound effects. And I will never, ever
find Vol. 2.

"Spectacular Accordians" -- Camilleri and His Orchestra

The track "Jungle Fantasy" is WILD and SCARY, belting along at a
million notes per minute. This is the single best accordian
performance I've heard. Apparently the piece was originally wriiten as
a showcase for a flautist... can't remember the name. Does anyone know
if the original version is available somewhere?

I just picked up an album of avant-garde accordian compositions,
performed by Stefan Zbigniew. I haven't got round to listening to
it yet; I'm subconsciously avoiding it.

Of course, the TRULY hip accordianist (Valentino) would go for a
Cordovox, that electronic version of an accordian, and accordian which
cunningly disguises iteself as an ELECTRONIC thin whiny squeaky
noise. Don't get me wrong -- I LIKE thin whiny squeaky noises.

Piazolla played the bandoneon, not the accordian. And produced some of
the GREATEST MUSIC EVER. There is, for me, that beats listening to "La
Camorra", even though I probably still can't spell it right. This is a
unique artist who invented his own genre of music -- Nuevo Tango --
that, at its peak, can simply fry the brain.

Astor Piazolla is truly the shit.
But also there's a guy called Guy Kluscevsek who plays a free-bass accordian (no
preset chords) and does twentieth-century classical/avant garde, as well as
straight ahead tangos and polkas.  He is the master accordian player of all
time, a true virtuoso with his instrument, as well as being a hell of a nice
guy.  He made me realize what a truly beautiful reed instrument the accordian
could be and how it had been abused by hacks all these years.  He's the man.
Not Exotica, but, hey, good music.

Allan recommended Chester get "Jungle Exotica" - I wouldn't
recommend this to anyone unless you really know that they'd
like that very primitive RAW sound.  I'm not sure you'd want
to start of a "beginner" with this stuff - his mind needs a while
to be s-lo-w-l-y twisted......

While this stuff on the Strip label is fun, you're not going be
giving these discs heavy rotation once the novelty of the
tunes wears off.  For the most part these are very boring
arrangements, a lot of them bordering on tedious (esp. the
"Jungle" stuff).

"Jungle Exotica Pt.2" is not nearly as good as the first CD in
my humble opinion.

(A huge fan of that primitive RAW sound )

Also worth checking out is the Leon Sash Trio "I Remember Newport" on Delmark
records. Sparse accordion jazz - some of it has a real jazz feel, some of it
feels more like "accordion music" (polka, Lawrence Welk) done in a small

Another good source, although I've never used them, is AllMusic.  I don't even
have the address.  But they do carry a lot of that stuff.

Another good place to check for ANYTHING is www.gemm.com which stands for
something like global electronic music marketplace and lists hundreds of dealers
with a gazillion titles, lots of hard to find stuff, etc.   I've been searching
for some old long out of print CD singles for a while, and they had dealers who
had them.  They were PRICEY, but hey, at least they existed.  So as sort of a
last (or first) resort, you should try there.

Jungle Exotica, the lp version anyway, is worthwhile if for nothing else
the opening track by Diablito and Ganim and His Orientals cut, "Daddy Lo
Lo". Everything else is forgetable. But speaking of that raw sound, I
was making a surf/rockabilly comp. for a friend the other night and
pulled out Trash, Twang and Thunder by The Big Guitars from Texas.
There's a track on that lp called "The Lost Incas" that should appeal to
exotica fans who also appreciate melodic surf; sounds like Augie Colon
sitting in with The Sandals.

I think this is the BEST Jean Jacques Perrey LP he has ever done.

SO!  Chazam tells me that on Kai Windings LP Mondo Cane # 2 on Verve
that SCREAMS with Ondioline released in the late 60's is Jean Jacques

I imagine that Kai Windings "Soul Surfin" LP also on Verve and also with
Ondioline is Jean Jacques as well.  I mean, why wouldn't it be ?

He says Verve (Creed Taylor) paid him $110 to play Ondioline on that
1st mentioned LP

How does he know ?  'Cause he fucking asked him.

Has anyone any idea of films to pick up with exotica soundtracks. A lot
of the 50s and 60s films has the right title, (Like "the wild women of
Wongo", "Voodoo Woman" etc) but lack good exotic music.

Bora bora seems nice, but I want something older. And if I say that
"Manos the hands of fate", "Mesa of lost Women" and "The girl and the
Geek" is my kind of films you know exactly what I want.

Can anyone here help me find some Feliu Gasul records. I've had exactly
zero luck
finding anyone who has even seen the record(s) before. I know this much about
him: he was (or perhaps is) an Italian composer of music that defies
catagorization as either avant-jazz or avant-classical (at least from the one
song I've heard.) He had at least one record out in the late-70s - it was
called "Feliu and Joan Albert." It was distributed at least for a while by
ReR.

One song made its way on to the first Reccomended Records sampler, which I
have. Any help any of you can give would be *greatly* appreciated:-)

Also, I am looking for records by the Homosexuals, as well as a preferably
less
prestigous (and hence less expensive) pressing of the No New York comp. with
DNA, the Contortions, Teenage Jesus, et al.
If there is a CD issue on the No New York comp, that would do just fine (in
fact it may even be slightly preferred, for my purposes.)

Hmm, now you're getting into the sort of stuff that used to be listed in the
New Music Distribution Service catalog (distribution offshoot of Carla Bley &
Michael Mantler's Jazz Composers' Orchestra Association). I have a few RecRec
albums, which include sheets listing other releases, but no mention of Gasul.

I still kick myself occasionally for not grabbing the "No New York" comp the
one time I saw it back then. If it is on CD, I'd like to know about it too.

My two favorite tracks of the last few weeks have been from Frolic Dinner
vol.5.
Firstly the Byron Gosh Group with Disgusting, a sleazy instrumental on which
somebody calls out "disgusting" in various variations. The other one is
Tipsy #3 by The Chumps, an infectious 50's ditty in which a booming voice
mentions a number of idiotic combinations like rum and bilgewater, scotch
and battery acid. The ending is hilarious too. The rest of the album is OK
but not that special

I think this is the same "guy" who did solo accordion renditions of Burt
Bacharach's "Who Gets The Guy"/"This Guy's In Love With You" on the "Great
Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach" 2CD on the Tzadik label.

It's cool...

And hell, as long as we're at it, how about Pauline Oliveros? Didn't she do
some long, spacey accordion pieces in strange acoustic environments on the
Hat Art label? I used to have a 2LP set (ordered from the recently
mentioned N.M.D.S), as well as a CD of her accordion stuff.  Great stuff
for sleepless nights.

wonderfully phrased scene in which the late band leader blows hotdog and
beer chender all over Frankie's veeeeery expensive loafers at a ball

A little more Accordion:
Henry Threadgill & Make a move "Where's your cup?" (on Columbia).
Accordion by someone named Tony Cedras.  Beautiful record.  Don't be scared.
And if you like Astor Piazzola, which I guess you do, try to find Evan
Lurie's (yeah brother of John and fellow Lounge Lizard) "Selling Water by
the side of the river" which came out on Antilles and is one of the most
beautiful records I've ever heard.  Really.  Bandoneon by "Alfredo Pedernera".
In the vinyl/thrift store category, has anyone mentioned Tommy Gumina's "Hi
Fi Accordion" (he must have others) or Jo Basile's "Jazz Accordion" which
actually delivers on the "jazz" front.
I even had a Myron Floren album once that I could stand.
If we're finished with the accordion survey, let's move on to the HARP.
Robert Maxwell is a given.  Now who else???

Maybe things are more black and white for me but whereas I can see the
"subversive" aspect in buying recycled vinyl - as opposed to reissued CD's
- - I'm not sure I see much difference between mailorder and record store.
(Unless you mean buying from an individual like someone on the list...)
I feel a kind of "disappointment" anytime I buy this stuff reissued on CD
but it's got  more to do with the the format and the record company that
reissued it than with the store where I bought it.

I couldn't argue with Jack.  Who could?  Maybe you have to read between the
lines on the Mondo Cane #2 liner notes but it says "Kai plays the Ondioline
on all the other numbers".  I don't know what they mean by "other".  On
"Soul Surfing" they refer to "Kai's Ondoliner" .  (They spell it
differently, not me)
(And on "Dirty Dog",there is no Ondioline but there is Herbie Hancock.)
I'm not saying it isn't true but why wouldn't they make a big deal of it if
Jean Jacques were on the records?

I bought Mood Mosaic #4 -  "Les Yper Sound!" (how DO you pronounce that by the
way - yuper, Ipey, oopurr??? enlighten me someone) this week and I LOVE it.  22
groovy tracks with that yummy Swinging London feel.

Two minor complaints though - one's a typo with regard to the artist Ted Heath
(they have him twice credited as "Ted Heat") and the track "Swinger's Holiday
(instrumental)" is strangely credited only to Ann Margret. Being an instrumental
there's (duh) no vocal on it, so what Ann Margret's input was I'm not sure.
Maybe that's her on the flugelhorn?

Great comp though. Go ahead, spend that tax refund!

Hello all,
Thank you for opening my eyes to the existence of worthwhile
accordion music.  And the correct spelling of the instrument!

Sadly, none of the exotic titles and artists ever surface in
thrifts here - it must be a 'pond thing'.  We are too close to
France, and so instead of the worthwhile Cajun playing, for
example, we only hear the tuneless flittering of the Paris-
style player, which makes Lawrence Welk's  Myron Floren
seem like the Denny of the accordion  by comparison.

Thank you also to those who reminded me of the other regular
finds here (Manuel & his music of the mountains, Geoff Love
(same guy, different name!)).  There may also be found many
volumes of a series called "Your 100 best tunes", with a
sleeve picture of a fireplace and two armchairs.

I also enjoyed someone's comment about a double LP of
accordion music somewhat ambiguously described as
"ideal for a sleepless night".  It wasn't clear if the writer
regarded it as cause or cure.....

That was me... more of a cure in the manner of Brian Eno's Ambient ditties,
but more interesting and improvisational, and no electronics.

I remember these pieces being very dreamy & meditative, lots of natural
reverberation... recorded in an empty underground water tank or something,
mostly quiet, all solo accordion with long, drawn-out chords.  Now I'm
wanting to hear them again, but these albums are somewhere in a storage
unit in Wisconsin (I'm a couple thousand miles away in Alaska.)

I'm thinking the LP was called "Pauline Oliveros: The Receptive" on
HatArt... the CD was "The [something] of the Moment?"  Anyone?

I always keep an eye out for Geoff Love records, he did several TV/Movie theme
type albums which although musically they're hit and miss the ones I have sport
amazing covers.

"Big Terror Movie Themes" contains the music from Earthquake, Rollerball, the
Eiger Sanction and others but the cover art is the bomb - a big montage painting
of Jaws, planes blowing up in mid air, the Poseidon overturned with 70's diners
trying to escape, the Towering Inferno and general earthquakes, explosions and
destruction.

"Big Suspense Movie Themes" (Shaft, Frenzy, The French Connection...) cover
features what one assumes to be an assassin's hand creepily opening a door.

"Big Western Themes" (high Noon, Fistful of Dollars, The Good The Bad...) has a
gunfight on the prairie, yeehaa!

A good deal for practically nothing pricewise.
