Do you mean why "make distinctions"? I don't get "divide".<
No no, I'm not recommending to be unprecise. The better word is
"seperate", sorry. I'm only saying that you can't seperate a subject
like "THE RESIDENTS", although they are not EXOTICA in general from the
other subjects of discussion, because they relate, at least for some
people in the list, to the main subject. For instance because they made
a record like "Eskimo". On "6 Things to a Cycle" ("Fingerprince") they
obviously quote the "Voodoo Suite" of Perez Prado. That record is from
1976!

That would be Sergio Mendes. The album that I grew up with has them posing
in a forest and has the song "Mais Que Nada", which is a great one. I
think it was called "Herb Alpert presents..."
I own "Fool on the Hill", which was praised at the time as being extremely
well-recorded.
In short, buy!

With all the tons of Ultra Lounge compilations out there, I was wondering
which ones are featuring sort of string-based filmmusic or film-ish music
like Bacharach, Barry, Legrand, Lai, etc?? They don't necesseraly (sp?)
have to feature said artists' stuff but just music in the same style. Maybe
Ultra Lounge has a website where I can find more info?
What other compilations are recommended? Sometimes they're good
introductions so you know what kind of music you can dig deeper into
later....
Sorry if this has been brought up before but I'm pretty new to both this
list and this kind of music.
Oh yeah, another thing; I saw an Esquivel CD called (something like) "The
Otherwordly Sounds Of...", is that a good and recommended introduction if
you haven't heard much of Esquivel before?

On vinyl, I have two lp's and 2 singles by them plus a solo single
by Andreas Dorau:
LP - Blumen Und Narzissen (AtaTak,WR12, 1981) Germany
LP - Die Doraus Und Die Marinas (CBS,25273, 1983) Germany 15 No 12/3/95
7" - Kleines Stubenmadchen (Telefunken, 6.13511, 1982) Germany
7" - Fred Vom Jupiter/Auch Die Heimat Ist Nicht Mehr... (AtaTak, WR-91, 981) Germany
7" - Dorau, Andreas - Demokratie ( AtaTak, WR-44, 1988) Germany
I'd highly receommend them but none are available anymore. I also
have 2 CD's, one of which (Ernte) is a compilation of early Doraus und
Marinas pieces from the early records. Both are on AtaTak and
I think should still be availble. There is also another AtaTak comp
CD that includes an english version of Fred from Jupiter! Check out the
AtaTak site for more details or write to them. Here's the names:
CD - Dorau, Andreas - Arger Mit Der Unsterblichkeit (AtaTak, WR 53, 1992) Germany
CD - Dorau, Andreas - Ernte (AtaTak, WR 64, 1995) Germany
I haven't heard any of his work on ElecroMotor but I will try to get
them somehow..

I could take that challenge and say that you live in a culturally
deprived part of the continent, and I wouldn't be that far off, but
really it comes down to the bigger the city, the more variety. Here in
Montreal, I have no trouble finding all kinds of greaat stuff.
condition is not always great but that is to be expected as these
records were never collected by audiophiles in their day. Even here,
you really need to know where to look. You should pay us a visit
sometime and I think you may be surprised at what you find. Funny you
bring this up as I always figured I should make a trip to Kitchener-Waterloo
where I could hope to find the discards of the older German population to
fill my Schlager collection. Should I bother?

I just picked up a 1983 example (released by Elektra/Asylum) called The
Digital Domain: A Demonstration.
The booklet contains the following note:
CAUTION: There are some sounds on this disc that if played too loudly will

I bet!! This is exactly why I prefer LPs -- my dispusion is never seriously

I just subscribed to this list, although I've been a long-time fan of
"exotica" and more (you can see my out-of-date radio show listing on the
SABP resources site. I've now graduated and no longer do the show, but I
haven't the heart to change a small claim to fame.) I guess my point is
I've been shocked out of lurk-dom by seeing my name! Yes, I'm Mike
Clifford, and although I know there are others around (including a guy who
wrote a bio of New Kids on the Block and an astronaut) this is the first
time I've seen a guy with my name doing exotic music! I'd love as much info
as anybody can send me about this guy!
Thanks in advance, and maybe next time I'll contribute to a real thread...

These Scottish albums turn up in England as well, I'm afraid, but not in
such large quantities. The dross quotient is, instead, made up with
albums by a duo called Millican & Nesbitt (ex-miners, I think, and one
plays the accordian (a never-hip instrument)(unless you know better?)),
Peters & Lee (Blind pianist and dolly bird duo, winner of a Talent show),
Val Doonican and Charlie Kunz. Oh, and numerous ancient Decca sets
of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in mono. These are invariably not put in
with the classical stuff, where perhaps they don't belong, but would better
be put.
And then there's Mantovani.....
Hugh.

Apart from Mondo Hollywood previously mentioned Bachelor Pad Royale has a few
film-style pieces, TV Town is similar but TV themes (excellent version of The
Odd Couple) and The Crime Scene also has a lot of spy theme sting-style music.
Most of the U/Lounge series has at least a few tracks along this style.
While you're out shopping you might want to check these as well:
The Thriller Memorandom (rpm records) British comp of spy/crime music
Inflight Entertainment - generally a great intro to groovy easy, has some
Bacharach songs from Casino Royale and lots more (They Call Me Mr Tibbs
...great)
The Sound Gallery Vols 1 & 2 (Scamp) Instrumental soundtrack and incidental
music, very string based.
Cheers
Wayne
PS: Does anyone know what happened to the planned Ultralounge 're-mix' project
(easy artists remixing U/L tracks)? It's been in the works for about 18 months
now. I've heard the Gentle People's Peggy Lee remix.

Ohmigod, Peters and Lee! I see them all the time in AUSTRALIAN thrifts! For
winners of a British talent show they travelled!
That guy with the growling baritone and that girl who had the Mary Hopkins thing

PS: Viva Lynsey De Paul!
PPS: An unmissabale regional release in Australia from the 1970s is the album
'Play It Again' by the Alan Gardiner Accordian Band. They proudly present their
renditions of Edelweiss, Yellow Submarine, Snoopy's Christmas and Sadie The
Cleaning Lady.
I see this absolutely everywhere, and for a while the funny cover picture of the
geekiest family on earth wearing party hats and playing accordians in a suburban
loungeroom (these guys know how to party let me tell you) was used as a comedy
vehicle on 'The Late Show' , the said band referred to as 'The Spazz Family'.

Here are some more examples of good killer accordion for you;
Art Van Damme-Killer straight ahead jazz accordion w/ smokin' electric
guitar and rhythm section(recorded mostly on Columbia late 50's-early 60's
though there are some excellent import reissues available out there)
Mat Mathews-More killer straight ahead jazz accordion w/ more killin'
electric guitar and French Horn jazz(recorded for Dawn early to mid 50's)
And then the piece de resistance is of course, Astor Piazolla, whom even
though I LOVE Flaco, makes him sound like dirt dirt dirt.

Here's one more addition to the very sleazy listening thread...Coldcut's
"I'm Wild About that Thing" from their recent "Let Us Play" cd. Should be
available at your fave record boutique.

You might want to pick up a copy of "Murder is My Beat: Classic Film Noir
Themes & Scenes" which appears to be a joint release by Turner Classic
Movies & Rhino Movie Music. It has the main titles from film noir classics,
but more importantly, the cd contains plenty of dialogue!

I would recommend the following compilation series: "Jungle Exotica" (Start
with this!), "Las Vegas Grind" & "Frolic Diner". These releases feature
down & dirty & very greasy, exotica-tinged instrumentals. Imagine the
seediest dive in Reno...this is the music the house band would play.

But, of course, Astor played bandoneon, not accordion.
And there *is* a difference between Nuevo Tango and Tex-Mex/Norteno music.
Anyone know if these compilations are any good?

Other good accordianists:
Jo-Ann Castle ("Hi-Fi Accordian", before she went to ragtime piano :p--great
album, beautiful cover!)
Dominic Frontiere (Fabulous, Mr. Accordian, etc)
The Mighty Accordian Band (in assoc. with Frontiere)--awesome accordian
orchestra!
some stuff on the Golden Tone label I don't have time to look for right now
And don't forget to catch Dick Contino in "Daddy-O" and "Girls Town"--and
find a copy of "Squeeze Me!" one of his best albums! ^_^
Thanks for the space, Jessica
PS--Noticed this on my favorite polka album today: Produced by Warren
Barker. Guess by that time he was out. :( (just a little play on an album
title!)

I have no idea what the music is like but the opening lines of this
review made me think that some of you might want to check it out:
"Imagine sitting naked and beaten bloody, with a bunch of
circus midgets in a Tikki bar somewhere in the lower bowels of hell. And
at that bar is a house band so demonic, so eclectic, so almighty that
they go by the name of the MYSTERONS"
The description that follows that opening doesn't really
help to figure out whether the music is "exotica-related" - even if it is
"tikki-related" - but if you consider this a clue, their new CD
"Hot-Dog-Pop-N-Clown" has been released on a label called "Blue Lizard
Cocktail".
And one more clue. Apparently someone has already used the music as the
soundtrack for porn films.
Who knows? Maybe it'll remind someone of the Residents.
Happy hunting.

Miss Murgatroid has played live at KFJC numerous times and even made for us
a special 1 uvvakind CD.
Ain't like NO ACCORDION EVER HEARD, on this planet anyway.

This is really not that "crime-esque" oriented. Way too lush orchestrated
and actually too early for that pounding BEAT.
The spoken word cues ARE pretty good though, but for 15 plus bucks + tax, I
dunno

I was in the dungeon section of a local leather store today. Yeah what of
it? Anyway, I couldn't see any of the titles because they were in the same
glass display case as the butt plugs and the various other goodies. BUT
suffice it to say that there are apparently a whole bunch of "sexy" CD's
out there but you've got to look for them in the right places. On the
other hand, some of these might be a little too specific for some of you.

Yes!
One of the members of the duo Lou Hoffner Trio is the brother of the
Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited who put out possibly the best album of 1997
- - even more "sonic" than Tipsy.
Unfortunately this 7" is an import so anyone who can't find it can mail order
it from:

melted down to provide the raw material for about a decade.

<< Ran across the following discs mentioned in Vik's Lounge -

If you look no further than the "lounge" sections of Tower or the Virgin mega
store, than you are missing out on a tremendous number of excellent titles
which most certainly fall into the category of exotica.
Most of the "hard-to-find" titles you hear about on this list but never see
can be found in specialty stores or through mail order. Here in San
Francisco, we have a tiny store called Medium Rare which stocks obscure titles
not found anywhere else in the area. There are a number of "on-line stores"
that have catalogs of titles with descriptions. Many of these are in Europe.
You make your purchase right over the pewter. There is nothing like getting a
package in the mail!
there are also people right here on this list that have what you need. Uncle
Jack's got "Svezia Inferno E Paradiso" and "Man In Space With Sounds" which he
produced with Stefan. Ego Plum, too.
Johan has put together a great site with information and reviews on hundreds
of discs you'll never know about otherwise. He also lists sources on where to
find them.
if all else fails, go to HOTBOT, or the search engine of your choice and type
in a title. chances are you'll get some clue.

Both are very good. Svezia you can order from www.dustygroove.com and
they have some new fantastic stuff from Piero Umiliani for sale as well.
Cal Tjader is on Verve, so that one would be easy to find.
