I wonder if the song "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" is the same song as the
hit disco for Viola Wills in the latter 7T's...It did have a nursery rhyme

Patience & Prudence were indeed children; sisters in fact. Their
father, Mark McIntyre, was a songwriter, arranger, and session bandleader
for Liberty Records. When they recorded their first single (1956), I
believe they were age 13 (Patience) and 10 (Prudence). Mark McIntyre wrote
many of their songs, some of which were co-written by Ross Bagdasarian of
Chipmunks fame.
Liberty released a total of eight P&P singles, and two more
followed on the Chattahoochee label. The Chattahoochee sides were recorded
when the girls were older, judging from the sound of their voices and the
musical arrangements. There was never a P&P album, and to date only a
couple of tracks have been reissued on compilation CDs ("Early Girls Volume
2," Ace Records UK, and "Mondo For Space Age" (Liberty Japan).
According to TIME magazine (3/11/57) "Gonna Get Along Without Ya
Now" sold 700,000 copies. The Liberty material (all backed by their
father's orchestra) was recorded in 1956 and 1957 as far as I know. The
TIME article mentions an appearance by the girls on The Perry Como show,
but I have been unable to verify this so far.
I believe this discography to be complete, but any additions or
corrections are welcomed. One of the Liberty 45s was issued with a picture
sleeve, but I can't recall which one at the moment. I think it was "You
Tattletale" but don't quote me on it.
All of their records are delightful and charming -- well worth
owning, particularly the Liberty sides. There's enough material in
existence to make a dandy CD.

On CD anyway. "Zipless" by Vanessa Daou. This CD really sticks out -
pardon the expression - in my collection but I just can't get rid of it.
Vanessa singing/reciting the prose of Erica Jong over silky pulsing
Eurodisco provided by her husband.
(Don't come to me for reviews.) All I know is that I've used it on a bunch

And I'd even sort of call it exotica-related.

Fausto Papetti is indeed very sad. Sickly sax with naked lady on every
cover, and often playing in water...:) I bump into WAY! too many here in
South Africa. The jazz section (can you believe it) at a local shop was
swamped with about 15 stunting its natural growth severely.
I'm interested to know what Raccolta means. Fausto reached about n.48 or
beyond - does it simply mean record??? (or really hot and saxy;))

WAY better than the cover would have indicated.
After running through the sax-organ-vibes-drum lineup on the back it says
that this lineup "makes this group a contender for one of the top groups of
the year once they have been heard".
Yeah, well that's the challenge, isn't it?
Their version of "Bag's Groove" kills, to borrow a term from Jack, I think.
So, make with the discography. Who were they?

You should try coming to Scotland, where at least 75% of ANY record
collection consists of ... you know. Traditional style guid auld
knees-up Scottish music. Very nice covers featuring tartan, glens,
heather, sporrans, more tartan of a different sort, bagpipes and the
occasional concrete bunker with a corrugated iron roof that passes for
a nightclub. The other 25% of the collection consists of Val Doonican
and Jim Reeves albums. I would give good money to be able to rip the
heads off of the Alexander Brothers.
Jimmy Shand rules, though.

Just when you thought the thread had died...
Recent fevered discussion about the Residents prompts me to ask
whether anyone is familiar with a Residents-related item I have.
It's a cassette called "Ralph Records 10th Anniversary Radio
Special" and features Penn Jillette supposedly locked in a hotel room
for six days(!) and forced to review a huge pile of Ralph material.
The cassette itself is plain white with no labels and the liner looks
to be a photocopy - but it does have (c) 1982 The Cryptic
Corporation.
I've never seen it listed or mentioned anywhere and just wondered
I had a wee rarity on my hands...

Sorry, maybe i did put it the wrong way: it is not a record, it's a
book, listing all singles that have been pressed in Italy between
1964 and 1970 (approx.; there's even something from 1963 and 1971).
You'll find listed authors, songs (A's & B's), original songs and
authors that have been covered (a main activity for the italian beat
groups/singers at that time), label, catalogue number and year of
release. There are about 3.000 listed (more that 100 pages).

I don't think i will export it in the States (well, i haven't even
asked anyone at the moment; Midnight Records might be interested). Do
you think it could possibly appeal to americans? If it's records on
Beat Italiano (like 60's Beat Italiano lp comp on Direct Hit,
available through Midnight) that you are interested in, there are
plenty of compilations available here, though most are now rare.

"Raccolta" just means "compilation"; sorry to annihilate your
fantasies (i agree "Hot & Saxy" was far better). Fausto Papetti is a
complete obsession to every italian of my age (33) and older. There
was a time when every single raccolta that Papetti published was
going straight to the top of the charts. Fact was that nobody had
ever seen him nor listened to on the radio/tv, so it seemed
impossible that he could sell so much. Answer is that he was so
popular in the "truck stop scene", thanx to his evocative covers,
that these sells only made him to the charts! That's what i call
truly exotic (with a country punk attitude)!

To me EXOTICA is something faaaar away. Therefore it seems clear, that
the term means something different to everybody, wherever they come
from. As I come from Europe, the European culture is not so exotic to me
as, like, the polynesian and I tend not to file it under EXOTICA. Unless
an artist or musician incidentally plays around with elements of far
away cultures. So let's not discuss it too dogmatically. Many items in
the Exotica list are rather "indredible strange" than "exotic". But
then: why divide, if you actually can't, as seen in the
Residents-example. Amanda Lear, of whom I'm a very big fan for decades,
had this Disco Smash Hit "Queen of China Town", which is exotic enough
to discuss her here.
As stated in one of her many homepages, she's an incredible woman, a
former model (yes, she is a woman), actress, singer, disco queen with
some of the best Disco-songs of all times, writer, TV-moderator,
painter, and I only wonder, why the feminists never discover really
great ladies like her to pose as figure-heads on their mother-ship.
Amandas Bio is nicely narrated here:
http://www.eurodancehits.com/learbio.html
I guess her records are harder to find in America and probably cost
more. I dont know. On the fleamarkets in Europe you can still find many
and cheap.
I don't think Amanda Lear is a strictly german thing, although she was
ver popular here. But she also had a TV-Show in Italy, which was
incredibly successful. She interviewed her guests in bed (Early 80s).
She speaks many languages. Actually she was born in Hong Kong.
Her book about her 15-years-aquaintance with Salvador Dali is worth
reading. Well written and full of funny stories about the Spanish
Charlatan/Genius. That alone would make Amanda pretty interesting, if
there wouldn't be so many other things...
Check it out!

Hey Gang,
Due to popular demand, I have created some new and improved throbbers
featuring Sandy Warner.
The covers of Exotica 1 and 2 have been re-done, to show more detail of
her wonderful eyes. You folks who have and enjoy the old ones will
probably want these.
I have completed as well the covers of Afro-Desia and Primitiva, using
the same technique.
If you would like these new and improved throbbers, e-mail me.
For those of you new to the list. Throbbers are use to replace that
obnoxious Netscape N in the top right hand corner of your browser.
Each zipped file containes a readme file with the rediculously simple
instructions. Each zip file is only 11kb.

Hey Gang,
Wondering if any of you folx on the west coast know of any tiki bars in
Mexico.
I know it's probably a long shot. I might do a trip there, and would
not mind running into one, even if it IS in an antiseptic resort
complex.
Tijuana Brass, Mariachi Brass, Baja Marimba Band,...why not tiki too,
right?
Also...
Wondering about Miami Beach. I remember as a kid (1980) going with my
folx to the Hawaiian Isle on the strip (Collins Ave.?). All kinds of
bamboo and tiki heads in the place. They had the outrigger lounge,
and the motel next door (?) had something exotic looking too.....Is any
of this still there?

I don't recall anything specifically on that, but "Daddy-O Grande's Guide To
Mexico City":
http://los.straitjackets.com/daddyo/index.html
has a lot of useful looking information for anyone heading thataway. Centers on
Mexico City, but also has material on Acapulco, Guanajuato and Veracruz.

I've got one of those, also. It is mentioned in the Bach is Dead discography
at the Residents site <http://www.residents.com>:
10TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
Releases:
OOP 2xLP 1982 Ralph RR8205 US Promo only
OOP 1xCS 1982 Ralph RR8205 US
1st pressing: Card stamped with number and liner notes
2nd pressing: Cover same as LP
Program:
Day One
Day Two
Day Three
Day Four
Day Five
Day Six
10 Years in 20 Minutes
Note:
Snippets from The Residents' recordings are used throughout the whole
release along with many other Ralph artists. The cassette release did not
contain "10 Years In 20 Minutes".
The "joke" is in listening to Penn suffer an on-mike breakdown during the 6
days, before he achieves enlightenment and leaves the hotel room on the
sixth day.
Penn later was involved in the Mole Show as a narrator.
When Cube-Eye played NYC it was my good or bad (he's a large guy) fortune to
sit directly behind him. He enjoyed himself trendously and obviously. He
seemed to attract some of the presentation in his direction, from which I
benefited...lots of the show seemed to be played right at him.
Since the 10th Anniversary tape has been out of print for 15 years, it may
be somewhat valuable to a Rez completist. The real rarity is the 10 Years In
20 Minutes disc - I think only 500 were pressed.
Be seeing you,
Lou

Grame, a major research and production center in Lyons, France, produces
the Musique en Scene festival every year. This year it was March 4 - 24, in
Lyons and in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, and it was combined with the
Futura festival and a range of concerts celebrating the pioneering works of
Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Iannis Xenakis, Luc Ferrari, Andre
Boucourechliev, and others during the 1950s and 1960s, in addition to a
large sampling of younger composers including Horacio Vaggione, Patrick
Ascione, Kristine Burns, Philip Samartzis, and many others.
