Speaking of Que Mango, I've got a Quadrophonic copy with a different cover
and title _Latin Holiday_ on Quad Spectrum QS-17 manufactured by Alshire in
1972 with a gatefold sleeve that has instructions on how to listen to 4
speakers along with the usual techy drivel.
BTW also listed among the cover promo for other titles is
QS-2 _Exciting Sounds_ by Les Baxter I would assume that this is a quad cut
of Million Seller Hits arranged and conducted by... as this is the other of
Les' 101 strings albums. Can anyone confirm that? This is actually a
real cool set also... don't let the title fool you... there are 8 original
tunes out of 12.

Hey, it may seem like Four Piece Suit is a change of pace for Barrence, but
isn't he the record collector par excellence who tracked down Raymond Scott's
stuff when it was only on reel-to-reel? Seems to me I read that somewhere
that in fact BW was directly responsible for the renaissance in Raymond
Scott. Can anybody verify or dispute this?

What is available, either on vinyl or CD, by Bas Sheva?
And, as a collector, I also, like many of you, go for the non-brand names. I
like lousy-lounge singers. Has anyone ever found anything by an Italian
singer ENZO DI TERRIZI(the spelling of the last name could be wrong, but it's
phonetic from my memory.) It's just hilarious! The guy saunters his way
through standards like KILLNG ME SOFTLY (tellin' ma whole-life,
withherword...) and has great wah-wah guitar. A friend found an album called
SI, SI, SI(an Enzo original), but it was not only Enzo, but two other "Cruise
Ship" singers. It's hysterical, and actually quite listenable!
Just curious,

As a member of Barrence's band for the last 4 years (and his friend for 12
years), let me verify this :
Barrence is, indeed, a voracious record collector with an imposing
knowledge of a great many musical styles. Although he is known as an R&B
and soul singer, he can talk for hours about folk, C&W, jazz, Celtic,
French, exotica, and rock in all it's permutations. He (and I) would spend
all our free time on tours hitting record stores all over Europe and
N.America. About 9 years ago, while going through hundreds of '78's in a
store in Kansas City (the Music Emporium, I believe, in the Uptown
neighborhood), Barrence happened upon a number of sides by the Raymond
Scott Quintette. Intrigued by the titles, he bought them all. After hearing
them, he made a cassette for his old pal from New Jersey, Irwin Chusid.
Somewhere in the same time frame, Irwin also received a tape of Scott's
music from fellow oddball musicologist/SubGenius Byron Werner (who also
introduced Irwin to Esquivel). The rest, as they say, is history. {BTW,
there was never any Scott Quintette music on reel-to-reel. It was only
available on 78's and on a 10"LP collection on Columbia from 1952}
Four Piece Suit is comprised of members, past and present, from Barrence
Whitfield & the Savages. Barrence is not involved with it, as it is an
*instrumental* surf/exotica combo. (I sat in on Hammond organ on 1 track).
The CD is entitled "Ready To Where?" (Ocean Records, OM 2006).

London has just re-released some Herrmann recordings with the National

One of them, "Bernard Herrmann Great Film Music" includes the music from
"Day" along with several other
fantasy films he scored in the 60s. The companion CD, "The Great Hitchcock

from "Psycho", et al. Both are in Phase 4 Stereo!

Subject: Spaced Out - The Enoch Light WWW Site
Just in case anyone was wondering what on earth is going on at the
Enoch Light site these days, I thought I'd update everyone on some
astonishing developments "behind the scenes" this week.
1. I have heard back from *Dick Hyman* and he is working on responses to
the 45 questions I sent him. As soon as I have these, an article
will appear on the site.
2. I called *Tony Mottola* on Tuesday and he too is happy to be
interviewed. I'm mailing him some (45?) questions in the next
couple of days and he has offered to *tape* his answers (and perhaps
some guitar strumming I wonder?). Speaking to Tony was a personal
milestone as it was my parents playing his version of "Tequila" when
I was but a wee thing that planted the seed of interest in this music.
3. Dick Hyman called WWW site co-constructor Michael Toth and one of the
results of this was a contact with one of Enoch's daughters, Mary Jack
Wald.
Within a day or so, I heard from her - she has seen the site, thinks
it's "wonderful" and has offered to provide as much info as she can for
the site. Contact with the other "Light daughter" Julie Klages is
imminent.
4. On the same day I heard about this, I heard from Lem Lloyd, Mary
Jack's son who remembers his old grandad well - he likes the site too
and has also offered his assistance.
5. Other points: the site is now listed at Yahoo and will appear in
Internet Underground's "Weird Web" links list in August.
So, big wheels are starting to move at a frightening rate and it's
all been a bit much for me!
Thanks go out again to everyone who has been throwing information at
me - you now have more incentive than ever for continuing to do this
considering these recent developments!
WATCH THIS SPACE FOR MORE NEWS - including a post from Michael who
will be posting news of an Enoch Light "birthday party" he's helping
to put together...
More later

As soon as you get there call the Sheraton Desert Inn as you might be lucky
enough to catch Keeley Smith & Sam Butera in the lounge...also check the
lounge at the Riveria as sometimes the Treniers perform there.
Always there and always a great choice - the current Las Vegas lounge King is
at the Continental (a few blocks off the strip) The Fabulous Cook E Jar!
Bars I recommend:
The Benihana Village in the Las Vegas Hilton is a real hoot for atmosphere
The bar in the middle of the MGM has a talking Foster Brooks robot !!!
On Monday or Tuesday nights at the Imperial Palace they have a luau dinner
show.
You gotta check out the Stratosphere Tower as I'm sure they've got a bar at
or near the top.

Popular though far less crowded and self-conciously trendy as Embassy and
Global 33 is Marion's (4th & 3rd Ave I believe)...they have won the Best
martinis in NY awards for amny years and the whole place has kept it's great
40's to 50's bar feel. They even have their own version of Grauman's
celebrity footprints - in the form of autographed plates from celebrities who
have dined there. The tunes at the bar are among the best in the city (they
were hip to what is now "lounge" for many years). And I believe they are in
process (it might be completed by now) of turning the bar into a
tiki/polyensian room for the summer months. It was also the nightcap spot of
the famous "summit night" with Combustible Edison's The Millionaire, Brother
Cleve, Joseph Holmes (of the Space Age Bachelor Pad web site), Joseph Lanza
(celebrated author of "Elevator Music" and "The Cocktail") and Lounge
magazine head honcho/editor Sam Wick all holding court!
Man what am I doing here typing this thing I should be there!!
