As soon as you get there call the Sheraton Desert Inn as you might be lucky
enough to catch Keeley Smith & Sam Butera in the lounge...also check the
lounge at the Riveria as sometimes the Treniers perform there.
Always there and always a great choice - the current Las Vegas lounge King is
at the Continental (a few blocks off the strip) The Fabulous Cook E Jar!
Bars I recommend:
The Benihana Village in the Las Vegas Hilton is a real hoot for atmosphere
The bar in the middle of the MGM has a talking Foster Brooks robot !!!
On Monday or Tuesday nights at the Imperial Palace they have a luau dinner
show.
You gotta check out the Stratosphere Tower as I'm sure they've got a bar at
or near the top.

Subject: Bas Sheva
Hi Laura and other interested parties
Bas Sheva seems to be an under recorded artist as the only other pieces
I've been able to find besides the Passions 10 inch obviously, are:
An absolutely spine tingling version of Caravan with Les Baxter
orchestration released on a Capitol 10 inch called Todays Top Hits by
Todays Top Artists on H-9113 (there's actually a series of these all with
the same title and cover art _a photograph of 16 78's layed out in a grid
with the graphics overlayed_ only the set lists are different). It looks
from the packaging that this was originally a 78 but I don't know that.
Other artists on this record include Les Paul and Mary Ford, Buddy Cole and
Gloria Wood, Nat King Cole etc.
Soul of a People which has been mentioned here before is a bit more serious
as it is Hebraic Chants blasphemously (they should only be performed by
men!) performed fairly true to genre with great orchestration by Harold Hal
Mooney This is on Capitol L8287
and believe me I've looked any one know of any others??

There is a new beer bar called Lava Lounge in the hip part of downtown which
strives for a Tiki motif.
13 Coins in downtown near the Space Needle and at the airport is classic
leather boothed steakhouse - sit at the bar in the restaurant (not in the
bar) and you'll see what I mean by leather.
My Suzie's is a former Polynesian restaurant now inhabited by winos.
Patty Summers (aka Pink Lady after the house drink) under the sidewalk at the
Pike market. Owner operated lounge act with tow guests that always sit at the
front of the stage EVERY night.
Sorry Charlie's is where the older loungers go to ply their trade in a real
family atmosphere.
Cyclops Cafe is neat. It's near the Lava Lounge.
Leilani Lanes is a Tiki bowling alley that has lost its exotic feel but not
all of the Tikis.
Moe's has a good lounge night called "Shaken Not Stirred"
Russ Schiedelman of Organ and Bongos fanzine is the loungemeister in Seattle
and dj Terrence Gunn
Check out the Tiki News for a full Seattle report in a few issues. And the
artwork of Dawn Frasier of Fremont area in Seattle. She paints island
patterns onto VWs!

Subject: Exotica in DC: An Oxymoron
Laura Taylor asked about good exotica sources in DC.
So far, the best places I'm found for exotica and space age pop records
in DC are Baltimore, Frederick, MD, and Virginia Beach, VA--in other
words, somewhere else. That's not to say that you can't find good stuff
if you periodically check the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and other thrift
stores.
Orpheus Records on M St NW has a very large collection across a range of
genres, but they're priced at book values or higher. The Second Story
Books warehouse in Rockville MD probably has the largest collection, with
everything priced at $2 a record. I found the quad version of "Que
Mango" ("Latin Holiday") the last time I checked there. Wonder Books in
Frederick is another good source. But overall, DC is no great shakes
when it comes to exotica.
And if the store scene is bad, the choices on radio are even worse. The
leading NPR station features **THREE** hours of bluegrass at the prime
evening commute time. There is no alternative programming to be found.
Bring your own tapes.

Listening to it right now, at work! There is gonna be a vinyl version
(probably taken off the digital tapes...kind of defeats the purpose
but nonetheless, the artwork will surely have more impact at 12" by
12"!!). Joey Seehee and Tiki Tones are the faves over here!

Wow!, does anyone know that this is on CD and in print?? I love the
Manc! Recently received the Mancini box set which had both "Girl from
Petrovka" and "Soldier in the Rain" on it! still looking for his
"Remington Steele" output as well as "Borsalino", "Two for the Road",
and his take on Morricone's "The Harmonica Man" on CD.

I just got Exotica and Exotica II yesterday and it sounds great. Good liner
notes by Denny and the packaging is impressive. The problem is that I had
to return it because CD looked fairly abused. It was scratched and had
someone's fingerprints on it.
I also noticed that Scamp uses that shitty EMI pressing plant to produce its
CDs. I have had problems with other CDs manfactured by EMI in the past and
have found their qualitity control to be dismal. I don't see how they can
get away with it. I'm returning mine and hoping that I can get a clean copy
when it comes in the store's next order. Do you know what's going on Ashley?
Thanks,
Bryan

Yep....Most compilations have 2 or 3 great songs, a few good songs, and a
lot of wasted little "0s" and "1s,"...er space (on CDs, you know?) But this

Hi!
With all the names that are discussed on this list I'm surprised no one has
talked about German composer Peter Thomas. I was introduced to his work
through two AMAZING Cd releases:
Peter Thomas "Film Musik" & Peter-Thomas-Sound-Orchester "Raumpatrouille"
These fabulous recording feature highlights from German film and TV
soundtracks from '66 & '67 and feature some of the coolest

I'm looking for anyone who has more info on Mr. Thomas as well as anyone who
has original vinyl recordings that they wish to sell, trade, or at least
record for me! Hope to hear from everyone soon!
