Wait till you read Skip Heller's notes for the Cd reissue of Baxter's "Que

get to do the Capitol comp notes.

Deej,
I did the review for that release for KFJC(http://www.cygnus.com/kfjc) and
to paraphrase Mickey McGowan from Incredibly Strange Music Book Vol 1;
If Jack Kerouac didn't go to San Francisco and didn't meet Dean Moriarty
BUT INSTEAD went to a tropical island and did what he did with the words he
did them with, strolling around the beaches in a robe and sandals eating
nuts and berries he would have been Eden Ahbez.
This is also the genius who composed and arranged Nature Boy that was
covered by everyone and their brother from Frank Sinatra to Esquivel that
Nat King Cole made into a "trillion seller".
Eden Ahbez is tre' cool schtuff. Some spoken word over super cool exotic
read real exotic music as opposed to Hollywood exotica which btw I LOVE!!!
and some songs with a small vocal group.
This is really great ! Get it now ;))

It's on BLUE VINYL.
I can't remember if it's the same record you're talking about Stefan.
I don't think it is.
This is composed and conducted by Alexander Lazlo and it's stamped/signed

Right here Kevin ;)
I love when "they say that". Multiple Instrumentation.
Danny's main instrument was the violin but you'd never know it.
Very fucked up pop music that we all love.
Mamie Eisenhower was a beatnik let me tell you. I bet she partied ;)
And Dena on vocals !
A much richer Mary Ford, more in the line of a fatter and richer sound of
Julie London BUT I think it's really the Les Paul angle they were
following, still an original sound imho.
Half the record are instros and the other half are these _very sultry_
vocals with Danny "in the background".
They must be screwing with the fidelity though...isn't there echo and
reverb on that LP ?

I guess they were speaking more in terms of guitarists who have appeared on
movie soundtracks than guitarists in general. What film scores did Grant
Green appear on?

I'm helping Alison Reid (a producer/director) put together a documentary
film on lounge music and if you have any info for us that you think we
should include, we'd love to know it. So far (i'm doing the research by
the way), we have talked to pretty much everyone I know of, Yma Sumac,
Esquivel, Denny, Baxter's (affiliates), Del Rubio's, and the list goes on
and on, but we may have excluded someone who you think is cool or obscure.
Even if the musicians or performers are not well-known, we want to talk to
them too!!
Let me know what you think, thanks.

Subject: Yma Sumac review (6/24 show)
I went to see Yma Sumac at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco
on Monday, June 24. While I in no way regret attending, the event was far
from perfect. The audience was big drag on my enjoyment of the event. Rock
and roll has ruined audiences, who think it's acceptable to be rude, loud,
drunk, foulmouthed, and in general annoying.
The opening act was Steven Kent, a solo digeridoo performer who was quite
good. It was the first time I've seen a digeridoo played live. Considering
the events of later in the night, the audience was surprisingly well-behaved.
Yma's band was a six-piece group -- piano, electric guitar, electric bass,
drum set, percussionist, and synth player (playing a cheesy DX7.) They
started out playing a couple of jazz pieces. During the second piece,
people started yelling "Yma, Yma" and other comments. The pianist/bandleader
stood up and scowled. Someone yelled "you guys are great, but you're not
Miss Sumac." This seemed to placate the bandleader a bit, but he still
seemed rather flustered, starting and stopping one piece after another,
and glancing towards the stage door in hopes that Yma would appear.
Eventually she did, wearing a yellow dress with green gauzy cape. The
cleavage went to her waist, and the dress nearly slipped from one of her
shoulders as she walked onstage.
About half of the songs she sang were old songs from her albums -- as
she said "this is a song I recorded two thousand years ago." The new
songs apparently had English lyrics. She spent some time between numbers
shuffling through sheet music on top of the piano, and sang the new songs
holding pages of lyrics in her hand. As she did this one time, the pianist
said "She wrote all these songs herself, words and music." He added,
"I just arranged them," which got a disapproving look from Yma, and there
was a long pause before she consented to start the song.
Early on, she said that she had been in an automobile accident recently,
and broken her arm, and had also fallen down at home, and damaged ligaments
and tendons in her legs, and was in pain, and that was the shows had
been postponed. The audience applauded in sympathy. She later said
that they had travelled that day, and had not had time to rehearse, and
that "tomorrow night will be better, I hope." The apologies were
repeated at the end of the concert.
She was miked with a clip-on mike on her shoulder. Perhaps she didn't
realize how much it picked up, since her comments to the band were
broadcast to the audience, and were generally greeted with laughter
from the ruder members.
The band was in general too loud, and occasionally drowned out Yma in
the louder parts. When the band would play quietly and Yma was audible,
her voice was really breathtaking, and that made it worthwhile. She can
still hit those high notes, and the "wa-wa-wa-wa" low rumbly stuff always
got a great reaction. She should really record again.
At one point Yma muttered a comment about the band to the effect of "after
tomorrow night" and a finger drawn across the throat.
There was a bit of conflict with the band. A couple of times, the pianist
began quietly playing for the next number as the applause died down for
the previous song. Yma told him to stop, and to not start playing until
she signalled to begin. After one such incident, she left the stage.
The band played a song on their own, and then she returned. She left
the stage a couple more times later in the performance. After one return,
some queen yelled out "Where are your shoes from, Miss Sumac?" She had
no response except a scowl. Eventually the pianist said "They're from
France." The shoes were high heeled, with platforms, and Yma tottered
in them somewhat. The comment, from a guy who was first in line for
autographs after the show, and apparently thinks he's some sort of fan,
did nothing but add to a tense situation.
Even worse, after the conflict with the bandleader over when to start,
someone said "Piano player, don't be an asshole." The audience audibly
groaned after this affront to civility.
Perhaps if the audience had been a little quieter and more patient, the
band could have relaxed a bit and given a better performance. But thanks
to the evils of rock and roll and the VCR, the majority of us in audiences
have to suffer the antics of fools.

Lots of it. It's a very deep hi-fi.
The liner says:
*every instrument consists in toto of bass, guitar, piano and violin.
Yet, with these four instruments he manages with the aid of
electonic trickery to achieve the sound at times of a 40 piece
orchestra.... On the whole, this wonderful Adventure In Sound attains
a cohesiveness and sense of intimacy, coupled with a remarkable
know-how of electronic engineering perhaps unrivaled on record.*
Don't know about the 40 piece orch. bit, but there are a lot of odd
sounds on this LP. Really love this record, wish my copy was in
better shape.

What is available, either on vinyl or CD, by Bas Sheva?
And, as a collector, I also, like many of you, go for the non-brand names. I
like lousy-lounge singers. Has anyone ever found anything by an Italian
singer ENZO DI TERRIZI(the spelling of the last name could be wrong, but it's
phonetic from my memory.) It's just hilarious! The guy saunters his way
through standards like KILLNG ME SOFTLY (tellin' ma whole-life,
withherword...) and has great wah-wah guitar. A friend found an album called
SI, SI, SI(an Enzo original), but it was not only Enzo, but two other "Cruise
Ship" singers. It's hysterical, and actually quite listenable!
Just curious,
