Yeah I've got one of the smaller models. It's a beautiful desktop console
organ made by Philips in the Netherlands sometime in the 60's. It has a 48
key keyboard with 11 tube (valve) oscillators one for each pitch which can
then be halved and doubled frquencywise to achieve octaves (these are
tunable with a screwdriver and some swagger... they won't be "tempered" and
so this brings some 'interesting' results). It is totally polyphonic and
has a lefthand preset chord button area much like that on an accordian,
hence Philicordia. I once tried unsuccessfully to buy a 2 keyboard version
so I know that there were more models. Mine comes with a mean
vibrato/tremelo and a spring reverb with external access (for a mike mixer
for instance), and an internal amp with side mounted speakers although
there are also direct and verb outs, and banks of combinable preset
switches with names standard to pipe organs ie flutes, brass, oboes, cello,
viols, choir etc. This means it's not quite as versatile as the drawbar
system used on a Hammond or Vox console, but the voices are very rich due
to all that oscillator power. The keyboard has a mechanical system for
sensing which stops are pulled and this is a pain to keep in optimal
shape... also the interior has about 20 miles of wiring... ie zero printed
circuits and this means it's a bitch to maintain. Anyway, I've used it for
years as it has a very unique feel and tone.
cheers

..and for those in the Minneapolis area, Beat Girl will be screened outdoors
this summer in Loring Park as a part of the Walker Art Center's annual "Movies
and Music in the Park" series. It's showing the evening of Monday, August 12,
and the film is preceeded by a collaborative performance by local acid jazz trio
Casino Royale and hip-hoppers Phull Surkyl. Here's a brief description of the
movie from the calendar:
"This rare British Beat film stars Gillian Hills (who later appeared as one of
the swinging London models in Blow Up [note: I believe the other one was Serge
Gainsbourg's muse, Jane Birkin]) as an alienated youth who heads off to France
to investigate the seedy past of her new French stepmother. Fellow beatniks
include Adam Faith and Oliver Reed. Music by the John Barry Seven. 1960, UK."
This is happening in conjunction with Walker Art Center's presentation of the
exhibition "Beat Culture and the New America: 1950-1965", in case anyone's
interested...

It was released on vinyl LP by MGM, don't know if there was ever a cd.
The song you refer to, which I believe is supposedly coming from the
transistor Lolita is listening to as she lounges on the lawn is
Lolita Ya Ya, the best thing on the record. Although the rest of it
would probably fit well in the category asked about by the original
poster.

The title is Beat Girl / Stringbeat and contains both complete LP's.
The label is Play It Again, cat. play001 The soundtrack is cool
jukebox swingin' spy instrumentals with a few very fun vocals.
Stringbeat is stereophonic easy strings with pizzicato, guitar, light
percussion, very grooovy!

Good filmtrack score by Chico Hamilton, who also appears in the film with
his group. It is more jazz than exotica though. I always liked seeing Tony
Curtis being beat up in films. I don't know what Hollywood saw in him
anyway. It was a good role for a lousy actor.

In SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS also don't forget Fred Katz, who played cello
in the Chico Hamilton Quartet, did the Ken Nordine word jazz stuff and
scored the music for Corman's Little Shop of Horrors. Being Corman and
the low-budget god that he was, Katz' score could also be heard in
Bucket of Blood, The Last Woman on Earth and The Creature from the
Haunted Sea. Does anyone know if Katz is still alive? john

I love these movie suggestions....I don't know if it would be an
appropriate mention, but has anyone actually heard the soundtrack to 'The
Ten Thousand Fingers of Dr. T."? It was apparently one of the few film
projects that ever involved Dr. Seues and the sets are truly wonderful and
well worth the look see. I saw it at a special talent show, it silently
playing while the band played over it and I've always wondered if the
soundtrack was as good as the visuals.

I rented it about two weeks ago. I could see why Dr. Suess was disappointed
in it (it's kind of a Wizard of Oz ripoff with a male Dorothy)
but there are several big production numbers that are absolutely insane
that make the whole thing worth it.

I believe Milner played guitar in the film, not bass. I'm not sure if
Barney Kessel was Hamilton's actual guitarist at that time (1957) or not.
