Try lamp oil. It's available at most hardware stores. You can even get in
colors.

Lamp Oil?!
You've got to be kidding! There has got to be stuff in lamp oil that just
isn't good for your chain, etc. If it is an acceptable substitute for
kerosene, please justify your statement.
When I use kerosene, I pour some into an oil drip pan and liberally splash it
on the chain with a toothbrush. Let it drip back into the drip pan and you
can use the stuff several times. Wipe the chain down with a rag and apply
chain lube. Store the bike until the next day of riding. The day before I go
riding, I clean the chain again with the kerosene and do not lube it.
I always ride with a clean chain- no lube. The lube is for storage, not use.

Whats the story with the "Kouba Links" that are on Ludwigs list and on
Kevins' DR page? I haven't heard anyone actually use them, does anybody
have any comments on these, positive or negative?

93 FJ1200 and 97VFR750 - both 28,000+ miles each on original oem O-ring
chains. Secret of O-ring chain life is keep it clean, clean, clean. Lamp
oil is kerosene. It works, as does WD40, Triflow and ZEP45 (my favorite at
the moment). I agree that all heavy lubing does is collect dirt and grime.

There are as many ways to take care of an O-ring chain as there are riders.
These chain maintenance threads come up from time to time.
The O-ring is meant to keep the grease inside the chain. If you wash it
vigorously or use too much solvent, you will wash the grease out of it. If
you lube the chain, the lube will not get past the O-rings, but will stick
to them attracting dirt, which grinds them to pieces. I don't think the
O-rings are affected by any commonly used solvents.
I wash my chain (with the bike) just enough to remove most of the dirt,
using soap sparingly. Then I dry it by riding around the block. Then I
apply a light coat of either 3 in 1, WD40, or chain wax. Mainly, I want to
coat the surface to keep it from rusting, and lube the O-rings themselves
just a bit, and the rollers. I let the chain lube dry real well before
riding in the dirt.
And, I replace the chain and sprockets regularly (always in a set!) on my
dual sports, about every 3-5000 miles.

They are well worth the money. I love mine.
Jesse installed a set for me, and it was like night and day especially the
improvement over small stuttering ruts; very smooth now, giving more
confidence over all kinds of terrain.
Can't wait to see how the new springs and Gold Valves round this out!

Good tips/opinions from all.. I think I'll go with Bryans technique.. Clean
with a brush with kerosene, wipe down, lube sparingly..do it the night before
riding.
One more question in the mix... what about using diesel fuel as the
cleaning agent?? (cheaper than WD if I can't find kerosene)

I get my kerosene from ACE hardware store (you know, "ACE is
the place with the helpful hardware man", or something like
that). If you have ACE in your area, try them. You take
them a 1 gallon can and they fill it cheap.

I used them to lower the rear of my 1999 DR350 SE bike about 1 1/4 inches.
The ride was improved also. I had to increase the spring reload to get the
desired sag.
I recommend them.

Hi all,
I put on the links and an 8 kg spring, and with my 250 pounds it rides
like my BMW, and I can now flat foot the bike. With my bad legs, I
couldn't ride the bike without them.
