Subject: (dr350) clutch slippage
I rode my bike today and noticed the clutch slipping
when it was cold. This was the coldest weather I have
yet to ride my DR in(35deg).I use the Castrol full
synth oil.Is it normal for a clutch to slip when it's
really cold(the air and motor temp both cold)? It got
better as the bike warmed up to oper. temp.

This week I drove my bike at low temperature (-5 C Celsius). No slipping
at all. But what I realised is, if you start the bike and then put in the
first gear, it can happen that the motor dies. I think this is because of
the cold oil. But this is no problem if I use a little more gas when I put
in the first gear. If you have problems with a slipping cluch only in cold
weather, it is probably the "wrong" oil. By the way. When I drove, the
seat was full of ice, not easy to remove it. So, does someone have any
experience with a seat heater? I've found only one source of information on
the net under http://www.saddlemen.com/seatheaters.html

My clutch started slipping when cold about this time last year. 12 months
and 13000 miles later it's just starting to noticeably slip when warmed up,
so you don't have an urgent problem! I assume the cable is adjusted
correctly? I think someone on the list said RM250 plates fit, so I guess
I'll be doing that soon.

With enough time and money (and a good machine shop) you can get anything to
fit! I would recommend calling JN innovations in Hayward CA. John has done
numerous fork swaps including YZ250 forks on his XR600 and he has a machine
shop next door to his shop. 510-783-5332 www.jni.com

Subject: (dr350) plastic gas tank?
Thinking about buying a plastic tank for my 94 350SE. Anyone had
trouble getting dual sport models inspected w/ a plastic tank (i.e.,
have to run a metal tank in NC to pass state inspection)? Anyone, have
recs on a particular brand to avoid or buy? I don't necessarily need a
supertanker. I more or less just don't like the look of my metal tank &
want a plain white plastic one. Would buying a Suzuki dirt model tank
be a better deal?
Thanks,
Heston

that the clutch drags when hot or cold. Finding neutral when stopped is =
impossible. If I am in first gear on level ground the bike will inch =
forward with the clutch pulled all the way in. Any suggestions?

Jim,
Assuming the clutch cable adjustment is correct and the clutch arm is on
the proper spline, I would check to see if the clutch hub spins freely
inside the clutch basket with the clutch plates removed. I have seen
more than one DR's clutch drag because the washer behind the basket is
too thick. If you want to do the work yourself, I would be glad to
walk you through it by phone or E-mail, but you will need at least an
air rattle gun or a clutch hub holder, (for removing the clutch hub and
basket to file the washer) You may want to check with your local dealer
first, as the warranty, even if the 6 months is up but with only that
many miles, may cover it. Norm
