Subject: (dr350) gold valves
Bryan,
I read your post about goldvalves and now have some questions. If the stock
piston has too small flow area, can=B4t you make it bigger and then change
the shims. Would that give the same (great) results as installing a Gold
valve?
Also you mention dual stage rebound damping. Can you explain this further?
What=B4s the advantages of having this?=20
I like to learn as much as possible about suspension/tuning/valving. Does
anyone know a web site where I can read about this? Books?
Thanks!

Suzuki says the forks are 49mm conventionals, (at least on the dirt only models) but are not
saying if they are the dual chambered ones as the 96 and 97 RM's had. Cross your fingers and
hope that they are the good ones, the 96 RM forks were voted boingers of the year by I believe
Dirt Bike Magazine. I have a set on my DR, and they work really well every where, after I got
the springs right for the added mass. Norm

Subject: (dr350) RMX/DR Fork swap
I have learned a bit more since yesterday...
JN Innovations in Hayward, CA (800-883-5332, jn-innovations.com) has done
more than a few like swaps. They are a suspension tuning company that also
does some machine work through John's (the owner) dads machine shop next
door. John himself has an XR600 with YZ250 forks on which he had to perform
a similar operation.
Bascially what he is doing for me is taking 91 RMX forks and their clamps
and, instead of using the RMX stem that comes with the bottom clamp then
having to machine the stem down 3 mm to fit the top bearing, he is pressing
the DR stem into the RMX clamp. Since the DR stem is smaller at the top he
has to also press in a bushing to make it equal to the RMX diameter. This
allows me to not modify any critical parts and to use stock bearings. He
said he has had no problems with years of hard riding on the others he has
done.
The way I see it is instead of taking something big and shaving it down
(which caused the breakage) he is taking the DR stem and building it up.
According to the owner of my local shop, Hayward Honda/Suzuki, which has been
in business for 28 years, they have never seen a stem bolt snap like mine
did. I am not worried that the DR stem is 3mm less in diameter.
He is rushing it to get it back to me on Thursday night. Hopefully he will
be able to finish the job. I am signed up for the 500 mile Ridge Runners
ride this weekend with plenty of fast dirt sections. Don't think I won't be
a little slow and puckered over the first few rough sections....

From all the info I have been able to gather the new DRZ400 recycles
absolutely nothing from the DR350. This appears to be a totally fresh
machine. Cant wait to see one up close.

Chris,
Are the 91 RMX forks USD? Where did you find them?
Is the stem one piece with the lower triple clamp? Meaning you'll use the
lower DR clamp and stem with the upper RMX triple clamp which needs the
bushing??
(Some sort of drawing-email program would be nice for you to explain this!)

Subject: Re: (dr350) 110/80/18 rear way too small
Chuck,
Regarding your tire size choices.... I just replaced a 120/100/18 Dunlop
K695 on the rear of my DR. I found that it had been rubbing on the
inside of the swingarm. A clear indication that it was to wide. I
realize that this is an off-road only tire, and that is what I use since
I only ride off-road, but I think the same would hold true for a DOT
approved tire of the same size. I now have a Dunlop 755 (110/100/18)
mounted and it seems to be better size choice.
BTW, I prefer the taller sidewall of the 100 series tires for the same
reason you might.

Jesse, sent a simple drawing which I've put up here, unfortunately, I'm
not able to get it in a format that does justice to it. But you can get

I'm still working on it...I can get a nice image in Explorer 4 on a
PC...a shadow image on Netscape 4+...we have some of the best minds on
the web working feverishly on this...(g) Actually, I would love to do a
write up on this entire procedure for the January/February issue of DSN.
John Gill was going to work with me on it until he went on to other
pursuits. I'll even offer the DSN bike as the transplant if I had a
willing guide...We have to have something to keep us busy until the
DRZ400 is among us...
