John...
What do you think of the handguards... I thought a bit heavy on an already
heavy four-stroke frontend...plus not alot of trees closely spaced together
out here in Southern Calif.
One thing I do know about checking oil level... do not screw the stick in...
just rest it on the frame and then pull out and read it... I ride the bike or
warm up for 3 minutes... then let it sit for 1 or 2 minutes before a
reading... you guys agree?

Subject: (dr350) air box mods
Hi. I've read that changing the airbox is the first choice if you want more
power. Cheaper alternatives include cutting the top off the standard airbox.
Can someone tell me exactly what IS the airbox and is cutting it a good
idea?
Thanks,
Neill

Has anyone tried out the 1" diameter filters sold through Dennis Kirk (I
think Uni makes them) in place of cutting the airbox fully open?

Subject: Re: (dr350) air box mods
Hi Joe, they are used in a lot of air boxes, and do let in more air, how ever in some cases
they can create a turbulence condition that does more harm than good. In being an airbox
manufacturer I have studied this area with considerable diligence. Its like porting you can't
just take out material to create a positive smooth flow sometimes you have to add material to
keep the flow moving without creating eddy's which are small areas of turbulence. I don't mean
to get carried away here but I feel That the whole storey should be presented in an
understandable manner. The DR350 stock airbox substantiated by a flowbench test flows 134cfm
{cubic feet per minute}with a freshly serviced air filter element. It flows 142 cfm with the
door off and flows 145cfm with the filter clear out. The head flows 148cfm with the valves at
full lift and the carb flows 145cfm. from this information you can see why the vortex hiflow
air box that flows 265cfm which sets the engine up for any stage of performance modification
in existance. The little 1'' ports are not very effective and can set up conditions that would
be counter productive. Hope this information helps.
regards Jesse

I would not modify the airbox if I had to do it again. I think that for
some people making mods brings the bike closer to the ideal bike. But
for me, the DR can never be an ideal bike. It's way too small for my big
fat ass and has lousy suspension. Its thin tires bog down in the sand
and mud. I am a beginner rider and I am sure many of my problems come
from my skill level, but if I had to do things again, I wouldn't modify
the airbox because I think it lowers the resale value. Who wants a bike
that someone has mutilated?

Subject: (dr350) Race-Tech gold valves
This is some great riding weather, huh? Unfortunately, hunters
have invaded the National Forest where I ride so I'm trying not
to piss any of them off!
Question: I have a '98 DR350SE with the Showa forks and shock.
I'm upgrading the fork springs and shock spring and installing
the Kouba link. I'm wondering if the Race-Tech gold valves
are a significant upgrade of either the forks or shock.
Does anyone with the Showa forks/shock have experience with
the gold valves?
Regards...Mark
