Jesse what kind of cfm's can be expected from your box a stock head and
optimum jetting(around 140).A stock box with a clean filter 134cfm, carb
can flow 145cfm,and the head 148(of witch only 145 usable due to maxed
out carb flow.By the way is that the cv or 'dirt only carb?).That tells
me I can expect 11cfm's more at most from your airbox? And from that
4-7hp?Do these numbers go up with aftermarket exhuast i'm installing a
FMF Megamax2 along with your box and jetting. Thanks!!!

HI Scott, what I am referring to here is the volume of fuel mixture that can flow through the intake
ports past the valves at maximum lift into the combustion chamber with a 24 inches of vacuum pulling
under the head simulating the piston at a downward intake simulation done by a flow bench. The flow
bench is used in this manner to give some close representation as to how the engine will respond in
a running situation.
Now we all know that there are variables, such as altitude, barametric pressure, temperature etc.
that can affect things. I have a DR350 here now that has the Airbox a bored pumper carb, oversize
headerpipe mega 4 pipe [fmf] and has a 147.5 main, fourth groove down on the needle and stock pilot,
that is almost as responsive as my 435 off the bottom and is a totally stock motor. It just falls
off sooner than the 435. When you go to the 435 you increase the vacuum and can draw in more fuel
mixture due to the larger displacement opening up the carburetor also helps this significantly. If
you stick with the cv carb. the results will not be as dramatic as the pumper. Keep the questions
coming guys........ this is fun.

Hi John, The Vortex airbox will satisfy whatever the engine is setup to pull up to 265 cubic
feet per minute. In my answer to Scotts questions I illustrated that with a oversize
headerpipe along with your megamax 2 will definitely open things up{ flow wise} and you will
probably have to jet up again on the main jet after its installation to match the increased
flow .

HI all,
I'm getting ready to put a "99" DR350 dirt on the road (Virginia, US). If I
run it down the road for an hour or so at 60 MPH, will the bike overheat,
lockup, or otherwise get damaged? Everything is stock except for MT 21's and
a Baja Designs light kit. Any input, suggestions much appreciated!.

Neil;
The two versions of this bike are essential identical as far as the engine
and gearbox; even the gear ratios are the same. That should allay your fears
your dirt only version will toast itself on the open road.

HI Kurt, was visiting with Norm Kouba this last weekend we had a great time. He came over
from the Boise Idaho area to a home machinist's show in Eugene and then down to visit me in
Grants pass OR I thought it would be good to put another face to match the text that we read
from time to time. During our many discussions the rear hub on the DR/S model came up and Norm
was saying that on the later models of the DR/S that they are the same as the dirt model this
is the way I understood it any way, Norm Correct me if I am wrong on this.

Subject: Re: (dr350) DR350 On road question
Funny you should ask about that....I was going to mention the "cush" hub
found on certain street versions of dirt bikes, but as far as I can tell by
reading my Clymers manual, the dual sport DR does not have a "cush" hub.....I
can't speak from persoanl experience 'cause my machine's a dirt only version.
But, yes, you're right; a dirt bike will have the rear sprocket mounted
directly to the wheel hub and driveline shock will be absorbed through tire
slippage and wheel spin. A bike designed to be street ridden must accomodate
for this driveline shock and the common way it is done is to mount the rear
sprocket into rubber bushings.
If the dual purpose version of the bike in question has a "cush" hub, then
it's probably not a good idea to convert the dirt only version for street
running unless you change out the rear wheel/hub; all that driveline shock
gets transmitted directly into the gearbox which is not a healthy situation.
