To all,
I have recently been getting messages returned to me by
"MAPS Realtime Blackhole List", usually as having the
"return address refused". Has anyone else had this happen,
or know anything about it? These messages are usually sent
to addresses that I commonly send to, and have had other
mail go through.

No. I've taken my DR on the MX track at Metcalf, Cal. and I think
I'm actually faster than when I ride my CR125R. The reason is because
I can put more power to the ground and keep the DR on the ground
better than the CR. I'm not saying a DR will beat a CR, it's just
that I ride the DR better. There were a few guys on CR/YZ 250's when
I was out there and I was catching a couple of them. They pulled off
before I could pass, probably because they didn't want to get passed
by someone with turn signals :-)
That was with a completely stock DR350SE except for knobbies (Dunlop
755 up front and a Dunlop K695 in the rear). I've now put in heavy
duty fork springs, set-up my forks and I'm running Michelin MP11's. I
can't wait to try the track again.
If you go on the track, don't be intimidated by the guys out there,
just hold your line, stay alert and if you hear someone coming up your
tailpipe, be smart and get out of the racing line as soon as it's
comfortable for you. Don't make sudden changes if you can help it
because they'll just use you as a moving obstacle if you're
predictable.
I love to MX, I don't get big air, actually I only jump table tops
or singles because doubles just make me cringe (and I can't do them on
my CR125 either), but I love to ride. I'm aware that most kids will
blow my doors off, but so what. I'm out there to just have fun.

GEARING
I know discussing gearing is not very exciting, but your comments would sure
be appreciated on what sproket combo is working for you. I have two fronts
(14, 15) and two rears (45, 47) and I can't seem to find the right combo.
Buying the sprokets and trying them is a little different (read: $$$$) than
buying new jetting so your feed back would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...Crash

My brother launched his old IT250 into a creek one time. We were racing
along this drainage and luckily for me he had the lead. We came upon ( at
about 40 mph) an inlet to the side which was about 4' wide but also 4' deep.
When he tried to gas it and get the front end up to clear the 4' ditch the
rear wheel did not hook up and just spun. He ended up doing an endo and his
cases and cylinder head ended up submerged in the muckiest water you can
imagine as his front wheel had lodged into the opposite bank. After an hour
of getting the bike out (very steep sides to the ditch and mud slicker than
Bill Clinton) and cleaning it out as best we could, the thing fired up and we
rode home. The airbox was dunked but didn't spend but a few second
underwater. This happened as we were flipping the bike out using a 10'
downed tree that we found to leverage the bike. Anyway, the cases didn't
explode or anything upon contact with the cold water and the piston didn't
freeze. For what it's worth.

Been there, done that. Only do it if you plan on not using your arms for a
few weeks. After you completely submarine the front end on the first jump,
your arms are going to feel like they were jambed up into your shoulders
from absorbing all of the force. If this doesn't bother you, then almost or
completely losing control on landing because the suspension sucks will. I
tried a few of the singles and doubles on my 96 DR350 (which I do not own
any more) and found out that I was brave but also stupid. I now attack
these same jumps from the cockpit of a CR250. I don't know what I was
thinking trying to jump a DR. It can be done, but you need the suspension
mods that some of the guys on the list have(ie Bryan Nolastname).

I enjoy tracks a lot, though I don't try to compete with the 2-smokes. A DR
is certainly capable of eating up XR400s, though, for example.
I found that I was bottoming my rear (and probably front as well) until I
revalved front and rear with Gold Valves. I'm about 210 w/ gear on, but
have a 7.6kg/mm rear spring and .46kg/mm front springs (which weren't enough
on their own).
The valving is still a bit on the light side for medium-sized jumps, and I
might throw another shim on the stacks when I do my annual suspension fluid
changes.
However, the DR is certainly best for trail riding, which is what I mostly
do, and I'll likely keep the suspension tuned primarily for that.
BTW, I'd estimate track riding takes roughly 10X of the energy that trail
riding does!

Chuck ....
I took my 91 dirt-version on Hungry Valleys begginer track and it stinks!
Yes I need to learn to land off the jumps better but the slapdown with damper
rod forks is terrible and the front end hunts and wallows... I rode a Y2K
XR400 on the track and what a difference.. the front end soaks up hits
without a hint of harshness like my DR...
I'll be looking for RM RMX forks... 87 thru 91 if the guys that've done it on
the list are right...
