Subject: (dr350) bike won't start
My bike won't start - please help me! It's a 92 S model without electric
start. My bike has been progressively harder to start over the last
week. The last straw came2 days ago when the boot on my air filter came
loose and I rode on very dusty roads. The carb was sucking non filtered
air for 50 miles before I noticed it. Surprisingly, the bike continued
to run fine. I removed the carb (noticing a bunch of pretty red dust
all over the whole inside) and cleaned it with water and Simple Green. I
stuck my finger into the engine where the carb attaches but didn't see
any dirt. I replaced the carb and put in a new spark plug and I could
start the bike a couple of times before it sputtered and cut out (I
guess the sputtering was from the water I shouldn't have used). I
cleaned the carb again this time using compressed air to blow out all the
small passages. I checked all the jets in the carb except the pilot jet
(I stripped it earlier and it won't come out). Could a clogged pilot jet
prevent starting? (I did try to start the bike at full throttle but it
didn't help). When I replaced the carb this time I couldn't start the
bike at all. I checked my Clymer manual for troubleshooting tips. I
removed the gas line and saw that gas was flowing OK. I unplugged the
spark plug and touched it to the engine - good spark (thankfully I didn't
set the gas all over the ground on fire). I seem to be getting good
compression too. I burned out a fuse because I connected the two wires
that I had cut when I removed the license plate holder so I replaced it
with the spare that comes with the bike. I have noticed oil all around
the filler cap but the cap has been on tight. It's almost as if the oil
was under pressure and being forced out. The oil level has gone low even
though I changed it and the filter 2 weeks ago. My battery has gone dead
with all the kickstarting but I believe the bike will start even with a
dead battery (will recharging it help)? I tried disconnecting the fuel
tank vent line because doing this previously seemed to make it easier to
start on one occasion. Could all the dirt in the engine have caused the
piston or crankshaft to seize (how do you know if you have a seized
piston or crankshaft)? Should I tear into the engine to try to clean it
out ?(please say no). Would changing the oil and filter again make a
difference in starting? Would it be worthwhile to use a little starter
fluid (where do you put it - in the carb or down the spark plug hole)?
Any suggestions will immediately be met with thanks and appreciation. If
you can get it to start I will give it to you. No wait, I'll name it
after you.

I got the Clarke 4.? gallon tank for $160 from Baja Designs
(www.bajadesigns.com), but I wish I would've gotten something else, cause
there is about 1/2 gallon you cant use. I think the IMS tank has a petcock
on both sides, allowing you to use most/all of the capacity.
